Default Pacioretti, Kessel, Skinner or Kovalchuk? Toffoli Gone?

Elliott Friedman said during last nights' Game 3 the Kings are one of four interested teams interests in Max

Bob McKenzie on Friday's XM segment the Kings were interested in Kessel and Skinner.

Quite a few people are saying Kovalchuk could be an option.

    One thing is for certain...

Rob Blake CANNOT have Alex Iafallo on the 1st line

Right now, according to CapFriendly, the Kings are the #1 team in the league in Salary, with only 4 million to spend and a looming Drew Doughty signing July 1st.

This means, Blake either has to make some drastic moves or wind up like the Chicago Blackhawks.

Pacioretti has one year left at 4.5 million.
Skinner has one year left at 5.75 million
Kessel has 4 more years at 6.8 million which will seems like a bargain 3 and 4 years from now given that Evander Kane just signed for 7 million and pending UFA's Pavelski and Couture will likely eclipse that, Max is gonna get PAID and the Kings simply can't afford him.

Trading Toffoli helps the cap issue, but doesn't solve the problem. But it sure does look like Toffoli is the likeliest to go. He's SLOW compared to what we've been watching in the playoffs and Blake needs to dump him (and something else) for a speedy winger who can actually score consistently.

Is Blake praying that Sheldon Rempal is the answer? Expecting Game Villardi to have an immediate impact is dangerous. Michael Mersch, who lead the Reign in points, is a UFA... so basically, the Kings have nothing of significance in Ontario.

Blake can't afford to deal Muzzin or Martinez and expect Daniel Brickley to step into their shoes. (Unless Blake really thinks Fantenberg and LaDue are NHL ready).

    So....?

What does Rob Blake actually DO to help the Kings cap wise and putting a product on the ice that's going to compete with Winnipeg, Nashville, and Vegas?

Why canít AI be on the 1st line? He opened up A LOT of space for Kopitar and Brown.

Yeah not sure I understand the OP thought process. Didnít Kopitar have a career year and Brown had big bounce back year from many years of suckage. All while AI was on the wing.

Name a 1st line player with 9 goals, 16 assists in 75 games?

Let Iafallo open op room for Kempe on the 3rd line - that's where he belongs

Erik Karlsson or Tavares. There wont be better players on the market for years. Either go big or go home.

Trading for Pacioretty or Skinner (each with only one year left on a contract) would be Lucic lunacy all over again, unless an extension is signed.

Doughty still has this season at his previous cap hit. In July 1, he can sign an extension that goes into effect NEXT summer. So that 4M in space would not be used on Doughty, regardless of any extension he may sign before (or during) this season.

As for rentals... Lecavalier, Iginla, Jokinnen, Reider.... This team's cap situation leaves management to be all ABOUT rentals.

So who do you dump to make cap room? The cap will probably go to $80 million. Doughty will want something on par with Kopitar next year when/if it goes to $88 million. If you re-sign Rieder at $3 million, let Torrey Mitchell go and either of Folin or Gravel go to free agency you have a roster spot open for a defenseman and a forward. You'd almost have to replace Mitchell with a prospect since he made less than $2 million and only a prospect would make enough below that to clear any meaningful space.

Trading away Toffoli for prospects and/or picks only gets you part way there. Karlsson or Tavares would command 2-1/2 to 3 times what Toffoli makes now. Someone else said that the Kings are interested in Max Pacioretty but between him and Toffoli its a wash for money and Pacioretty is only under contract one year.

Looking at the math I really don't see the Kings making a big splash via free agency since they just don't have the cap space. By way of trades they might do something but they need youth and speed to compete with Vegas and they're not gonna get that in a trade.
