Default RD is Kings biggest need at NHL level.

    ... not another scoring winger.

    Doughty
    LaDue
    Matt Roy
    Austin Strand
    Sean Walker (added 7/10)

That's 1 proven NHL player, if you're keeping score at home. Instead of still being in on Pacioretty or Skinner, they should be talking about Faulk. Yes, he has defensive shortcomings, but those would be well hidden on this team. He could be swapped (plus or minus other assets) for your choice of anyone on this list not named Clague:

    Muzzin
    Martinez
    Clague
    Phaneuf
    Forbort
    Fantenberg
    Brickley
    MacDermid
    Lintuniemi
    Moverare
    Anderson
    Hults
    Phillips
    Falkovsky
    Johnson
    Reddekopp
and your deadbeat cousin all play the left side.

Every indication is that they don't plan on bringing Voynov back (and there's a whole other thread to discuss the moral implications of that), so from a hockey perspective, what are they doing here?

We need LaDue to take a big step forward this upcoming season. I still have high hopes for the kid.

However I do agree - RD is their biggest need.

Checks the season's GA record......checks to see who won the Jennings Trophy.......checks the seasons goals scored record......check to see how many goals the Kings scored in the playoffs versus how many they allowed...........

RD the BIGGEST need you say?!?!?!?!?

...and here I thought their biggest need at the NHL level was more flavors of Gatorade.

Glad to know our biggest need is on defense.

If they fill the 2nd pairing from within, it will only happen because Muzzin finally anchors a pairing without Doughty. No idea if he really has it in him but last year was a hell of a lot of learning experience.

Stats here for context. They really didn't let them play much together.

I would vote for a veteran 3c, but yeah, the lack of faith in a 25 year old LaDue, and playing Martinez on his offside are definite concerns. Looks like Gravel and Folin are shuffling off, so there is very little depth to work with.

As serviceable as Martinez is, he is so much more effective on his left side. That Phaneuf pick up is still troubling, the only place on the roster where the Kings had quality depth were their LD's, then they brought in an older, slower, more expensive one.

You do realize that scoring in hockey is not all created by forwards, right?

Yes, putting pucks in the other net is the idiot's guide to what this team needs to do. But that's a result, not a comprehensive approach. Now that you've added Kovalchuk, do you just go out and get another guy who "scores goals" and HOPE that it'll happen for them in LA? Or don't you look at other parts of the solution, such as the system that is played, or the speed and facility with which the forwards and defense work together?

In order to maximize the team's offensive production, you need to have your D group functioning as smoothly and seamlessly as possible. The fact that they were the best "defensive" team does not mean they have maximized the contribution of their D group. Everytime Alec Martinez receives a pass on his off side, takes half a second extra* to corral it, half a second extra to switch to his forehand, and then makes a connecting pass that is 12% less likely to connect with its intended target, that is a potential scoring chance missed. (*all numbers invented by me, but you know it's true, and let's just call it a whole second for Fantenberg, and a second and a half for Dion)

So yeah. RD is the biggest weakness in this lineup now. Or maybe Erik Karlsson's whole career has been a mistake. lmao

It's hard to understand, with Blake being a HOF right shot defenseman and all. Maybe Austin Strand is this year's Ontario Reign MVP?

Get me a center first. That's a hole that has been with the team since Stoll left.
Then we can address the team's BIGGEST problem of RD.

    It's not the BIGGEST problem.

They may sign another depth defenseman who's right handed:
    https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/f...a/desc/1/right

Plus there are RFAs who aren't qualified who may be picked up.

And they have two left handed defensemen who are comfortable playing on the right side (Phaneuf, Martinez).

Apparently you didn't check to see that the forward core was ridiculously busy helping out on defense during that entire series.
