Phaneuf is a #4 left shot defender on a team full of left shot defenders, in an organization whose only defensive prospects play on the left side, and in a position that is among the easiest and least expensive to fill in free agency. But our old, slow defender is paid well above his station, and wants to play out his string on the beach where his never was-been wife can try to book a straight to ION Network show.
Kings can just retain some salary in a trade and could find a taker for Phaneuf if necessary. Probably even get a pick in return. That option would be cheaper than a Gaborik buyout would have been. You are correct that Gaborik was more likely to go the LTIR route some day or just retire. But in terms of getting Gaborik's contract off the books, Blake did a good job. Phaneuf can play either side and this whole left shot vs. right shot thing is not as significant as you and others claim it is. I think his physicality was something that Blake coveted and none of the prospects can provide that right now. In the end we got the better player and I can live with that. Gaborik was useless. Phaneuf is just overpaid.

Dion played good. He scored some goals and added toughness.
