Blake thought he had a playoff team that could improve on last season. He added Kovalchuk to improve the scoring problems, figured the kids would improve, and that Brown and Kopitar would continue to produce.

When the team went into a free fall the first month, he got a guy in Dejardins to right the ship and just keep it from capsizing. Again, probably expecting the players to bounce back and get into the mix.

He was still picking up players he thought likely to help any way he could before deciding to cut bait on the season and trade Muzzin.

He didn't have a plan to show up the players. He wasn't trying to make a huge splash with his coaching decision. He just decided he wanted to go with what they had and see where it got them. The entire organization's approach until January was "We should basically be good enough with what we've got."

The only credit I give him is for not re-doubling down on the team after it was only too clear they were gonna be crappy. But even then, it was comically too late.

Blake may indeed be in over his head, and he has not been great. But that Muzzin trade may end up being a really good one for the Kings. Especially if that first round pick turns into something.

Fun devils advocate question, what is the maximum for the retirement contract crew if they buy in again?

He certainly found a crystal clear image in the mirror last year when he was third in MVP voting.

Commendable of course, but did he notice his playoff record of one goal and one assist in 4 games as Captain, Superstar, and $10 million Man in the reflection?
