    Default Patrick Marleau incoming???

    Ekkk gadzzz!

    https://twitter.com/PierreVLeBrun/st...97823481892864

    from the tweet:
Hearing the Leafs and Kings have talked about a potential Patrick Marleau trade. Obviously there?s the Todd McLellan connection there for Marleau so he might waive. But as of now I don?t think the two teams have found a fit. Kings would need to unload a contract or two as well...

Marleau cap hit $6,250,000 for 1 year , Kovalchuk $6,250,000 for 2 years

so Kovalchuk & a 4th to free up money for 2020-2021 season

The Leafs need cap space to sign Marner and Kapanen, the Kings are not the team to help them with that.

This didn't make sense to me at first, at all. Especially with Marleau's NMC. But after five minutes of looking at it, if this deal is what I think it might be, this could actually be a good idea to do.

    1. The Kings are 11 under the cap right now, and with the turnover that is inevitably coming, I see that number going down more. Kings are not going to be players in UFA, so they won't be bucking up against the cap next year.
    2. Marleau is on an expiring contract (6.2 hit for 1 year)
    3. If the Kings get Marleau and a 2020 first, I do this deal in a heartbeat. Probably same for a 2nd this year and a 2nd or 3rd next year.
    4. Flip Marleau at the deadline for another pick or two.

That's how you rebuild in the NHL and restock the cupboards. Kings wouldn't be the first to do this, either.

Quite the opposite if you get picks alongside Marleau and then get more FOR him at the Deadline. That's multiple picks in one season, all for eating less than a year of a contract. That's a quick re-stock and smart asset management.

    ...if that's the plan.

Exactly!! You need to accumulate as many picks as possible over the next two years. One way to do that is take on bad contracts other teams don’t want. A bonus with this one is that you can trade him again at the deadline for another pick since he is on a expiring deal.

The Kings need draft picks so even getting a second while taking on an expiring contract is good news for the Kings. The Kings are headed to the cellar so anything helps.
