THE PURGE Review. James DeMonaco’s THE PURGE Stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey | Collider
I’m glad I saw The Purge with a crowd because I could see that the siege aspect triggered the audience’s bloodlust. Any social commentary that had the slightest possibility of sticking was instantly forgotten once the blood and bullets started flying. For a moment, I thought DeMonaco had made a stunningly subversive picture playing to an oblivious audience that shared in the bloodlust of the Purge. But then I realized I was giving him too much credit because earlier in the film, we hear a talk-radio conversation where someone mentions that the point of the Purge isn’t psychological but economic—the poor can’t defend themselves like the wealthy Sanders. The bloodlust is a cover for discrimination. This means that the rah-rah violence is an unintended effect that undermines that point DeMonaco set out to make.
It’s a point you’ll get in the first five minutes, but rather than develop that point into a moral gray area or let it sink in, The Purge spends the majority of its runtime ignoring its central thesis. There’s nothing wrong with trying to be entertaining, but hard critiques demand hard choices from a storyteller, and like the Sandins, DeMonaco has chosen to hunker down in safety rather than face the brutality he’s unintentionally created.
MAGIC MAGIC Trailer. Horror Film MAGIC MAGIC Stars Michael Cera and Juno Temple | Collider
Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for writer/director Sebastian Silva’s psychological horror film Magic Magic. The pic stars Juno Temple as a young girl who starts to lose her mind while vacationing with friends in Chile, with Michael Cera taking an incredibly dark turn as an acquaintance of Temple’s character who has a rather peculiar fascination with the girl. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to mostly positive reviews, and while audiences sparked to the unsettling nature of the film, it’s not exactly a highly mainstream concept. As such, Sony decided to go direct-to-DVD with the pic. Nevertheless, this trailer is certainly tantalizing and the pic looks to be worth seeing for Cera’s performance alone.
THE PURGE 2 in Development; Jason Blum Announces THE PURGE Sequel | Collider
Solid movie. saw it with the WORST audience ever. Bad enough that I may need to change my mind as far as actually going to the movies. Either that or get a lawyer to handle all the aggravated assault charges that i will start to accrue.
This was at the Grove. Usually solid. Every once in a while though...and this was one of those times.

Looks like this wasn't as insignificant as it looked. With the F13 blu-ray set coming out it may force movement on a return to Camp Crystal Lake.
