I am telling you guys. One of the best beers out there is Bridgeport Pintail Ale

http://www.bridgeportbrew.com/images/bp-brews-pintail03.jpg

Bev-mo carries it, it's the only way I know of to get it in CA

Be my guest. I am going to start up something soon , but a beer of the week thread will enhance my plans. So go for it.

By the way, the Pintail Ale is an excellent start. I was up in Oregon last summer and brought an entire case back with me. I would put this beer near the top of my ratings.

I agree with that choice. I found it while on an Alaskan cruise two years ago. Then recently a local restaurant has it on tap and I actually found it in an Alberstons.

Another favorite is Firestone Double Barrell Unfiltered. You can't get it at the store but at the brewhouse it is mighty tasty.........

If you are ever traveling on the central coast the Firestone Brewery is in Buelton across the freeway from Pea Soup Andersons. I think they just opened another one in Atascadero right of the freeway as well but I haven't been to that one.

I highly recommend dropping in for a quick taste if you are in the area. They also have a really good chili if have a chance to stay for a meal....

Really, I thought 1 six pack for me, 1 for John, Ok, 7 bottles for me, 5 for John. Well, I'm sure John would be happy if I saved him 3 beers. Some indication of the quality of that brew. Maybe I should just arrange shipping while I'm there. :)

Budvar is indeed the original Budweiser, the trademark of which Anheuser-Busch has been filing lawsuits in order to try and protect. this has been going on for a couple of years, with both breweries attacking each other. Budvar even launched a worldwide campaign to blame A-B and other big breweries for the decline in quality of the beers. can't disagree with them, eh?

so, was it any better than A-B's version?

btw, Falstaff, owned by Pabst, has ceased production due to declining sales. Falstaff was one of the biggest selling beers in the U.S. in the 50's and 60's. the last batch had been delivered last month.

apparently, they aged too much. as you've said before, it is better off the tap. or if bought in Colorado.

The nectar of the god's is also known by the name Kilkenny. Brewed in the town of Kilkenny Ireland.

Best beer there has ever been. Unfortunately, the only place you can get it is pretty much every where except North America. Unless that's changed since the last time I checked which has been some time. First time I had it was in a pub called Kitty O'Shea's in Darwin, Australia. I'm not much of a beer drinker, I usually stick to the harder side of the liqour house, but I would drink before ice water in Iraq. Wonderful taste and smooth. I highly recommend it, if you can ever get your hands on some.

Also had it in Thailand, but it was like 10 USD per pint. Much cheaper in Australia.

LOL.

As far as Budweiser goes, I could take it or leave it. It's an ok beer to throw in the mix every now and then but it's not what I normally drink. Too much of that stuff gives me nasty headaches the next day so if I'm drinking to drink a lot I go with Sam Adams or a Miller product. If I can only have 6 or so then i'll go import (New Castle, Heineken, San Miguel, San Miguel Dark).

There are much nasteir beers out there than Budweiser. BTW it's not an urban myth about the Czech origins.

the only Bridgeport they have in stock are the IPA and the Pintail Copper Ale. I grabbed the IPA.

I also picked up Dixie Beer (slow brewed). I've had their Blackened Voodoo and the Crimson. both are great. I had the Dixie Beer in a rib place, of which did not impress me at all, thus I've forgotten about how the beer went.

somehow, a bottle of Stone's Ruination IPA followed me home.

with any luck, the reviews will be up at the end of the weekend.

I am all over the LGK beerclub! Great idea Doug!

Pyramid is not one to be missed. Their Apricot Ale is unique. Not to the standards of all the other beers mentioned here but not a bad brew. It is really bizarre taking the first whiff of a newly opened bottle and smelling apricots! If you don't like apricots don't go there. But if you do you won't be disappointed.

Man a Pyramid Apricot Ale off the tap? That must have been nice.

Also does anyone else notice a trend here? Seattle and good beer? I have family and lots of friends there so I am biased but there is some outstanding beers that have been developed there. Red Hook was absolutely great before they went public and were over exposed. That beer was a legend in Seattle for awhile but then they went public too quick. I think Galley and DougW8 know of what I speak regarding Seattle and beer. I would even suggest a trip to the city just for the beer tasting. It would be worth it.

I think the beer club idea is a very good one. We could pool resources and buy 6 or 7 cases of choice brew at a time knocking the cost way down. This is really the only way to get these good beers down this far south. Let me know about interest. Thanks.

I think the beer club idea is a very good one. We could pool resources and buy 6 or 7 cases of choice brew at a time knocking the cost way down. This is really the only way to get these good beers down this far south. Let me know about interest. Thanks.
Off the tap was actually the first time I ever tried the Apricot Ale. It was very nice especially in the heat. Nice and crisp.

I loved that place. Right across from the baseball field so I was able to go over to the brewhouse grab a few beers then head to the game. I actually caught three games while I was there for the week. It doesn't get much better than beer and baseball......

quick question..... how many of you know that czechvar's real name is budvar and that its the ORIGINAL budweiser?

There was a lawsuit over the name. Budvar had been around for a few centuries. Anyway, budweiser is awful stuff. They use rice malt in their brewing process to cut down on cost. That's sinful!

Just got back from a few days in Portland. Didn't have near enough time away from my conference to see the local pubs. Did get a chnace to try some Blackhook Porter, which I had not had before. Pretty decent porter put out by Redhook. Yhe conference itself featured Widmer at the various receptions. Very nice perk on the flight on Horizon (Alaska) Airlines. They now offer free beer and wine on the flights to Portland. They feature a different brew each month. This month it was Pyramid Hefeweisen.

btw, Bevmo also carries Stone's Electric Epic ales. what's interesting is that these beers come out roughly every 13 months (3/3/03, 4/4/04, 5/5/05, and so on) but you must preserve it for several years as it ferments to the level of whatever. the ones that are available this year, dated 5/5/05, suggest that you don't open the bottle until the year 2012.

what's up with that? that's a long time to wait. I can envision myself wrapping a bottle in a towel, stuffing it in a paper bag and stowing it away deep in the closet. then forget about it for 7 years.

Tried a beer last night that I picked up at Hollingshead Deli in Orange. It's called Supplication and is brewed by the Russian River Brewing Company. A most unusual beer. As it says on the bottle, it a "brown ale aged in oak barrels with cherries added". It's rather expensive, at $9.99 for a 12.7oz bottle. Excellent flavor, very complex, each sip seemed to reveal something new. The guy at the deli said to drink 1 bottle now, and put the other away for a few months. After trying the first bottle, the second is calling to me right now.

EJ Molloy's in Long Beach had it for awhile, but they might be out of it now (and I might have had something to do with that.)

It's a little late in the season, but Franzikaner Hefeweissen is the best of the Heffes I've had yet. Tried it at a Beer Dinner and was able to find it at Trader Joe's and BevMo throughout the summer. It's bottled and brewed by Spaten.

I just tried one of those huge bottles of Stone IPA and I gotta say this is a great beer. I always avoided it because it's from San Diego County but it's very clean with just a little bite and not what I expected at all. The trendy label kind of put me off too, but this is now one of my faves. I also got some Booneville Christmas Ale or something like that that goes well with the Stone IPA. Both are great craft beers. THey were all out of the Deschutes Mirror Pond so I picked up some Deschutes Black Butte Porter, which has a bit more body than the Booneville and the Stone pale ales.

Oh yeah I also picked up some Monty Python's Holy Grail Ale.

I'm a big fan of black and tans (traditional Bass/Guiness) and a couple of years back I was at my local liquor store and decided to buy some. Well the store was out of Guiness so I decided to try Young's double? chocolate stout instead. Buy a pint Bottle of the Bass and a can of the Young's and mix like you would a regular black and tan. The Young's is heavier than Guiness so it will blend with the Bass not sit on top like a regular black and tan.
This stuff is so good but be warned, for some reason if I drink more than four glasses I get a serious hang over for some reason. You don't even have to get drunk to get a hangover. But the taste is so goodd it's almost worth it. Remember to buy the Young's in a can so when you pour it you get a good head.

I really like a beer from a small brewery in CO. The beer is called Fat Tire. I have not been able to find it in CA so I try to bring some back with me every time I go to CO.

The brewery is call New Bleguim Brewery in Ft. Collins. http://www.newbelgium.com/

They also have a great wheat beer called Sunshine Wheat, definetly worth a try. No need to go to CO to get Fat Tire, you can get Fat Tire at almost any liquor store in Orange county since December. They currently only distribute the bombers, 6 packs will be coming soon.

A coworker from Germany just visited and brought me 2 bottles of one of my favorite beers in the World - Andechs. Can't buy it here. Had one the other night and felt like I was back in Munich. Andechs is an old Monestary Southwest of Munich on a hill. Great place. Good food. The beer is better out of the tap but the bottles are still great even after being schlepped over on a plane in checked baggage.

Still have a bottle of a local German villiage brew that I 'schlepped' from one of my business trips to Germany. My biz counterpart took me to his village pub and they had wonderful beer and schnopps. It was in the hill country NE of Frankfurt.

I've been lagging on updates of my barley and hop adventures- and this thread needed a kick in the butt. Without further ado.....

Stone Old Guardian (2006) This may be my favorite beer. Period. Double Bastard is right up there as well. Typical barley wine style ale kick, with enough flavor to kill a horse. I recommend getting multiplwe bottles to let it age. I had some 2004 last week and it was unreal.

Stone Imperial Russian Stout (2006) - not for the faint of heart, a typical heavy stout with coffee/chocolate tones and dark enough you can't see through it even when it's backlit. If you're a stout lover- don't miss this year's!

Ballast Point Yellowtail Pale Ale - Not too bad for a pale ale. Not necessarily my #1 choice for a pale ale, but it's in the top 5 pale ales I've probably ever tasted. Good enough that I plan on trying Ballast Point's other brews.

Bear's Red Rocket Ale - this stuff was friggin' awesome! If you're an IPA lover, I would recommend this in a heart beat- lots and lots of flavor.

Boontsville Oatmeal Stout - Ummmm, I was under the assumption this was Boontville's best brew. Save the money and get two Stone Imperial Stouts, a Rogue Shakespeare Stoute, or and 8 Ball stout... all of which are better than this weak attempt. Seemed closer to a porter. Young's Oatmeal stout and some of the organic brews blow this oatmeal blend out of the water.

That's all for now, this next weekend our adventure through the land of barley and hops continues.

Happy Drinkin'
Dustin

As a proud and accomplished beer drinker I'm embarrased that I haven't participated in this thread to date.

I have this habit of letting bottle caps accumulate in the drawer where I keep my church key. I tend to let the pile go for a couple of months before cleaning it out and starting over. I think the last time I cleaned it out was around Easter time.

Here's what I got:

Newcastle -- a bunch of these, I buy it by the case at Costco every now and then. A solid staple.

Deschutes Brewery -- Craft brewery in Bend, OR. They use a common cap on all of their varieties, so I'm not positive which one these are from. I'd guess the Mirror Pond Pale Ale, which is my favorite from them. They make a nice IPA as well.

Karl Strauss Endless Summer Light -- I tend to keep a few bottles of lighter, more mainstream beer on hand for my wife who doesn't like most of the stuff I do. This is the current varietal.

Sam Adams (the original Boston Lager) -- I think a friend brought these by during the NHL playoffs.

Sam Adams ("Brewmaster's Collection) -- From the Black Lager. Oh yeah.

Pacifico -- Another wifey selection. I'll drink 'em with Mexican food when the weather is warm.

Widmer Brewing -- Like Deschutes, this doesn't indicate which varietal, but I recall that my father in law brought down some Widmer hef with him from Oregon. These caps aren't quite as cool as the old Lucky Lager puzzle caps, but they are imprinted with quirky toasts such as: "To convenient memory" and "To skirt-lifting breezes."

Redhook IPA -- I don't remember these very well. I think guests consumed these.

Full Sail Pale Ale -- More Oregon micros. My FIL has really got me on the Oregon bandwagon.

Green Flash Brewery (San Diego) IPA -- Overly hopped, VERY strong taste and a pungent skunky aroma. A bit too much even for me.

Stone IPA -- much more subdued and palatable than Green Flash, but still bold. 6.9% ABV. Yep.

Alaskan Amber -- more playoff beer. Don't remember much about it other than it was good and served its purpose.

Bridgeport Brewing Co. -- Portland. Again. Another generic cap that doesn't indicate the exact varietal, but it does indicate "Bottle Conditioned Ale." Pretty sure this came from their IPA.

Firestone Pale Ale -- Not much to say here. It was cold and good.

No Red Stripe caps, but I will say "Hooray for beer!"

Hey H4D, long time, no post.

Speaking of Karl Strauss, anyone ever seen Windansea Hefe in the store anywhere? They seem to sell every other Strauss brew at BevMo, but not that one. It has the perfect hefe banana notes to it, and although some others available are similar, they seem to be hit or miss.

I had some El Jefe that was great, with the same tropical fruit/banana thing, but the next time I had some, it didn't quite do it... a little inconsistent.

I spent some time in BC recently. Didn't sample any Kokanee, but I finally got to try some of the Sleeman varieties. Canadian co-workers of mine had been hyping Sleeman for years (they don't export it).

Honey Brown Lager is very good. The cream ale is a little light for my tastes, but is a pretty good beer overall. Didn't have a chance to dig into any other of their beers. I was interested to try their "clear" ale, not knowing exactly what that is. I also found it humorous that they have both "cream" and "clear" ales in their line-up. They should package mixed six packs with three cream ales and three clear ales. Great endorsement opportunity for Barry Bonds.

That's where I usually get it when I eat there (it's right on my way home from work). I think I might need to go out to dinner tonight. ;) I've never seen it in bottles there like they have everything else, but I'll have to investigate further. Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!

A couple of good Ales:

Afligem Tripel--bottle conditioned store it upright, it does contain some sediment (don't be afraid)

Corsendonk Brown: nice chocolate flavor.

Heffe-Weiss: Do NOT add lemon! If you gotta add fruit to drink it...

Erdinger-- superb (try with a small piece if pear if desired)

Franziskaner Heffe-Weiss. let this bad boy come up to about 50 degrees F and taste the difference

I just saw their product for the first time in my local high-end convenience mart (you know, the kind of place where you can pick up a toothbrush and a nice, but overpriced, bottle of wine at midnight). Lost Coast makes a couple of really great beers. They have quickly become my favorite brewery. You can get most of their stuff at BevMo as well (I even saw it in a Ralph's the other day).

My favorite is the Apricot Wheat which is a great summer time beer. The only problem is they don't bottle it which means ordering a keg or going to the yardhouse which has it on tap.

Actually every beer they make is really, really good but if I had to pick another one or two to recommend it would be the Downtown Brown and the Alleycat Amber. They also make a nice IPA but it is hard to find.

Check them out at http://www.lostcoast.com/

Didn't really feel like reading through all the posts so I don't know if these have been mentioned but I'll name them anyway.

The first is the best beer I've ever tasted. Karl Strauss Windansea. It's a hefeweisen with banana, vanilla, and clove flavoring. Unfortunately I don't know any place that sells it other than the Karl Strauss brewery. Anybody know? It's like dessert with alcohol.

The second is a Canadian beer called Kokanee. I've only seen it in Canada. Can't find it here. Likewise, if anyone knows a place around here, let me know.

It's DYNOMITE!!!

Aside from Upper Canada Dark Ale - Guiness, Newcastle, Boddington's Smithwicks or a Carlsberg top - (that's a pint of Carlsberg topped off with 7-up).

4. Everything from Tommy Knocker is damn good too- had 6-7 beer sfrom them, they were all above par. The Jack Whacker was a personal favorite.

5. Paulaner Hefeweizen - Sweet Tap-Dancing Christ!!! this stuff made me a believer! Even if you think you don't liek Hefe's, you will like this beer. And please do the beer a favor and DON'T throw a friggin' lemon slice in it, thank you.

6. Sam Adams Oktoberfest: Better than the boston lager, great if you can find it for relatively cheap in a 12-pack. If you want to go up a step, then try...

7. Spaten Oktoberfest: Tis the season to honor our Germanic brethren, might as well buy from Munich and do it right. Much better tha the Sam Adams, not as harsh. However, if you want to go better than this...

I got a couple to suggest that I don't think are too common.

First, Cooper's Sparkling Ale is an Aussie brew that puts crap like Foster's to shame (although Foster's Bitter is ok). Cooper's has a little yeast sediment on the bottom so I turn the bottle upside down and let it blend in before drinking. It's really a great beer for a hot day.

A new IPA I have been getting into is Squatter's IPA. It's out of Utah and has a nice kick but, to compare, a bit less hoppy flavor than something like the Stone IPA (regular). It's a nice change up from some of the more potent IPAs I've had.

2. Stone Smoked Porter - So far this is my farotie beer by Stone althought I still need to try the ruination.

Believe it or not I still gotta try the smoked porter. Oh the shame! Ruination is good but it cannot be had with food (stated on the bottle). It's like a hops explosion and it annihilates your taste buds.

I'm not a huge beer drinker, but this stuff is just great. So much so, that I'm picking up some meaty oniony pizza and wings to enjoy it with tonight.

This, actualy is not the first time I've had such experience with Paulaner. In the late nineties I was visiting my friends in Ukraine, and we went to a pub that had Paulaner on tap. FYI BevMo has Sam Adams Oktoberfest for 10.99 a 12 pack right now.

Tried BayHawk's Chocolate Porter, it was pure crap. USed it to cook with since I didn't enjoy drinking it much.

If anyone is interested there is an annual Strong Ale Festival at the Pizza Port in Carlsbad. You have to pace yourself and drink a lot of water. Beers poured there have to be a minimum of 8% abv, with the highest last year at over 15%. There are some harsh beers and some very smooth ones. Plus, Pizza Port has some great food. The festival is in early December.

I'm having the Paulaner Oktoberfest Marzen Amber tonight. well, actually, 2. it's one great tasting German ale.

I had an Hofbrau Original last night. think it's the same beer we had at the Hofbrau in Vegas last month. it's a quality brew.

anyone ever tried the Bitch Creek ESB from Grand Teton Brewing Co.? gonna try that tomorrow night.

I had the Bitch Creek when I was in Jackson this summer. I am not a huge fan of ESB's, but it was pretty nice.

Was in Santa Fe, NM a couple weeks ago. Had a few Santa Fe Brewing Co Nut Brown Ale's. Seriously one of the best beers I have had. Not sure if you can even get it out here but it was great.

I had Rogue Hazelnut Brown Ale recently as well and wasn't very impressed for the price I paid! It was decent though just not worth the pesos.

Lagunitas Maximus IPA is incredible. A smooth IPA, which is unusual. Very good flavor.

Also Ballast Point Brewing Company's Calico Ale. Best Ale I've had in a long time.

Sorry, I scrolled through pretty fast. On ebay I bought a Kona Longboard tap handle that is a small outrigger paddle. It is the pride of my tap handle collection.

What is the TSC?

Seconded on the Lagunitas. Quality brewery. Not sure if they will release the Hairy Eyeball again or not, but that thing has a HUGE kick to it. Very tasty too.

Nice to see a few folks enjoying the Paulaner Oktoberfest. I picked up a couple of sixes last week. 'Tis the season! :smile3:

Was at the liquor store yesterday and got New Belgium Brewing's 2 Degrees Below Winter Ale and 1554 Black Ale. The 2 Degrees Below was ok but the the 1554 Black Ale is great. I defenitely recommend the Black Ale.

Here are some new tasty brews that I have tried in the last couple of weeks:

Paulaner Hefe Weizen - The best Hef I have ever had !!!! Hands down. Tried a tall bottle of it and loved it, so I brought a 6'er of it out to the desert on our riding trip last weekend. Very refreshing and flavorful while sitting around the campfire in the cold weather. No nasty aftertaste or bloated stomach afterwards. Went down very smooth !!!!

Franziskaner Heffe Weiss - Another quality hef.... Perhaps the runner up to the Paulaner. Would definately drink it again without hesitation.

Hofbrau - Had their hef as well, and isn't quite up to par with the above 2 that I mentioned. Better than the Widmer and Pyramid **** though ! Overall a decent tasty brew.

Warsteiner Premium Verum - First tried it years ago, but just had it again this past weekend and rediscovered why I loved it so much. I would place it over any other German Pilsener that I have had.

Fat Tire Amber Ale - Tried this one a year ago out of a bottle and wasn't overly impressed. Had it on draft about a month ago, and LOVED it !!! So, I also brought a 6'er of this on our riding trip last weekend and poured each bottle into a dixie cup. Definately balanced out the taste that way and I was a happy lad to say the least.

Firestone Pale Ale - An impressive pale ale, but certainly doesn't stand out like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale or Stone Pale Ale. I would drink it again, but would take SN or Stone first.

Sierra Nevada Brown Ale - Hate to say it, but I was a pube dissapointed with this one. I was expecting a nuttier type of taste to it, but instead got a rather blunt finish which didn't satisfy my desires. I'll be donating the other 5 bottles to my roomates.

Sam Adams Winter Lager - Yummm !!!! The spices used in this put the finishing touches on a great tasting full bodied lager. I would definately pick this up again, which will actually be soon with these low temperature nights that we've been having.

This weekend's menu: Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale !!!!!!!!!

I have yet to find a Brown Ale I like.

Fat tire is one of those beers that has be tried on Tap. The bottle doesn't do it justice.

Actually Newcastle would be the exception, I actually forgot about it when I made that statement

The Browns I was thinking of The American Browns like Acme Brown, Redhook Brown Ale" and Samuel Adams Brown. Those all blow dead puppies

I forgot about that one, but for some reason, I think that one is a bit too dark for my taste. kind of like a chocolate syrup with malt. it wouldn't have been a brown ale in my book.

good stuff, though

Hey guys- I am DEAD serious when I say this. Get to a local Bevmo and score a sixer of Lagunitas Brown Shugga' Ale. HOLY CRUD! It's 9.9% alc content but I don't think I have ever tasted anything this strong that is this smooth. It kicks the Stone stuff all over the place in the smooth department (although taste I will reserve judgement for now). DO IT!

This past weekend I enjoyed a few new treats:

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout - I'm still not the biggest stout fan, but this one is definately an exception, and perhaps a gateway to appreciating stouts.

Samuel Smith's Winter Welcome Ale - **** yeah !!!! That's all I have to say about this tasty brew. I would drink this stuff again in a heartbeat.

Samuel Smith's Tadcaster Bitter - A bit dissapointed with this one. Not very bitter by any means, and weak in flavor/body when put up against anything else from Samuel Smith.

I still need to try the SS India Ale. I've got the organically produced lager getting cold for next weekend's consumption. However, I have a strange feeling that I'll be working on my Sierra Nevada Celebration Ales come Xmas weekend :)

Bitburger is the "Budweiser" of Germany. But it's still very drinkableas it is German.
