There should be a limit to how much female bonding that occurs in a comic book. We don't sit around and hug each other all the time and single women who have no significant others don't always order take out.

I'm talking about YOU Birds of Prey!!! :)

With yesterdays teaser of the cast, and now this, I am very interested in this flick. This could possibly be the first REAL X-Men flick. And without Cyclops/Wolverine etc. Outstanding.

and yes Boobytrap, I am a huge fan of the super-diaper as you can tell from one of my home decorations...

Oh, and as far as I know there is no current Suicide Squad book.

Ok, maybe I read that this book was Suicide Squad-esque or something. Loves me some John Ostrander so that's a plus. If Gail Simone is good enough for him to write with than color me on board! So, Deathstroke??? What's the deal there. At one point(last I remember) he was a good guy(in the way that Punisher is for Marvel). Now he seems to be a straight up baddie...

that's better...anyways, what happened? Didn't he die at some point too? And what happened to his faithful manservant...I used to like Deathstroke quite a bit.

NEVERMIND...read the exhaustive Wikipedia entry...sheesh.

I liked The Boys #50...but it didn't hit me like I thought it should have. Maybe it's the absence of Wee Hughie, maybe it's the fact that I am reading single issues instead of waiting for the trades...but I cannot feel as if it has been a little...lacking.

this

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c179/rtbstrd1331/Weird-World-1.jpg

was disappointing. Thought it was some sort of team up book, NOPE. It's a blatant attempt by DC to sell 6 pages of a LOBO story with 6 or so of GARBAGEMAN(so blatant a Swamp Thing rip off I cannot even complain), and TANGA(long lost sister of TONGA???/STARFIRE ripoff). Art is good, whoever does garbageman is a more mainstream Kelly Jones(oofa Deadman), but I don't want to be force fed 2 minor characters when I think I am buying a LOBO book.

JH Williams III on Batwoman Delay (http://www.jhwilliams3.com/archives/337#comments)

“The book was also never to launch in November either. The zero issue which came out at that time was never in the original plans, but was done as a bit of a reminder as requested by DC, and to set the stage, this of course took out time of the work already in progress. February had been decided on the launch date by the company with reservations about that from me. I felt that was a bit too soon in a realistic look at work progression. One of the reasons for this was that I had been seriously committed to making appearances around the world over this past year. I think maybe 3 months or more of work loss occurred during that time. I kept trying to point this out whenever discussions about schedule came up. When first discussing the launch date earlier last year we had originally wanted April 2011, and now ironically that is what we have. Only after solicits stating otherwise, causing some unnecessary frustrations. Added to this mix I was being asked to do covers for Batman Inc., which I was concerned about considering the schedule for Batwoman, this quickly added to the problem of not being able to launch in February. So I thought it best to bow out of the Batman Inc. project.”

I forgive you, JHW3. I still wish I had the book now, though.

Holy crap David E. Kelley? I loved his old shows (Picket Fences, Chicago Hope..). Wow, I wonder what it's going to be like.

On a side note, I started reading The Boys yesterday and it's great. I finished the first trade in like, a hour. Unlike Planetary, where it took me weeks just to get through 3 issues in a trade.

Love the fact that there's a character that looks and acts like Simon Pegg.

Are Marvel and DC cutting costs??|?The Beat (http://www.comicsbeat.com/2011/01/24/are-marvel-and-dc-cuting-costs/)

Something of particular interest in this article:

I’ve also heard rumblings that I cannot really talk about that DC is going back to press on fewer titles than ever right now. Basically if it’s not making a certain sales target, it doesn’t get reprinted, regardless of whether or not it’s volume 1 of a series of trades that are still coming out. So DC fans, if you want a trade paperback, I humbly suggest that you buy that trade paperback when you see it–those books might not be in print more-or-less indefinitely anymore.

Bad news.

I dunno, man. There are a number of TPBs I've been trying to get my hands on that go for too much because they're out of print. Go look at the prices on Amazon for the 4th and 5th trades of X-Statix. I was thinking about wanting to write a comic book story about a female secret agent who's an alcoholic and then realized that's been done before.

But then again aren't most secret agents alcoholics?

I was listening to Daft Punk, shaking my head, and the Asian hottie next to me at the computer lab looked at me, like, um, what's his problem.

Once comic books and "Geek Culture" went mainstream... profitability became the main goal. Not "art".

When was the last time a socially conscious rock song or movie topped the charts? It's been a while right?

Geek Culture is now in the spotlight and it's gained it's own momentum.

Nobody wants a comic book about the Iraq War when they can watch The Red Hulk beat up The Green Hulk twenty pages at a time spread out over a year.

Or fill their rooms and movie shelves with every licensed product imaginable from TRON : Legacy.

THAT'S RIGHT. I BLAME YOU, COMIC BOOK FANS!!!!

Newsarama.com : Hot Buttons: What Happened to SOCIAL COMMENTARY in Comics? (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/2011-hot-button-social-commentary-11027.html)

Interesting read. I'm kinda like one of the people they mentioned in that article. I don't really read comics for social commentary. I like to be "entertained" as he puts it. I might be an escapist too. When you see bad stuff and have to deal with bad people all the time, why would someone assume that that's what they want when they read comics? Sorry but, I don't want to read about the drug problem in Gotham, I'm quite aware of the drug problem in society - thanks. Not to mention, if I wanted social commentary, I would just pick up a non fiction book.

If a writer wants to put social commentary in the comic, go for it. I have no problem with someone have HIV/AIDS or is gay. Heck, when I found out they made Rainmaker from Gen 13 a lesbian I thought it was the coolest thing. I thought Ex Machina was great how it used sprinklings of social commentary it but it didn't beat you over the head with the message. I think that's what would turn me off to a particular comic, if it was overly didactic.

But to be honest, if I was looking for social commentary in comics, I wouldn't be running to an superhero one...

I could be wrong BUT.....

I believe the issue was licensing rights.

My recollection is that SONY has the movie rights to Spider-Man but it's contingent upon four years not expiring without another Spider-Man movie being in production. They were having difficulty getting all the principles from the Raimi films signed to return and the clock was ticking so it became easier to simply start over from scratch in order to guarantee that they retained the rights.

Otherwise they risked losing the rights BACK to Marvel and the next multi ka-ga-ja-billion dollar Spider-Man movie would have been made by Marvel Films.

But I could be wrong.....

I don?t know how much I want to give away about it, but Darren said with the last one, ?Hey you looked great, but you?re so tall that in those long shots you looked kind of like Clint Eastwood, and that?s not Wolverine.? He said that Wolverine, in the comics, is powerful, stocky, you know, he?s short and thick. So he said, ?I want you to go there, get bigger.? He?s going to come down after he gets done with all the black-tie events over and done with.

...

Yeah, he?s thick and it?s chunky and it?s powerful. I always think of Mike Tyson when he first came on the scene. Sometimes, he was a full foot shorter than his opponents and bent over [with this] massive build. There?s real power. You said bulldog, and that?s it exactly. Exactly. That?s what I?m going for, and if I have a massive heart attack first, well, you tell everyone what I was going for.

“I did three [as well as a limited appearance in 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine"] and the best thing I ever did got cut out of one of them,” the British star said with a tone that sounded half-serious. “I had to get Xavier’s wheelchair into this elevator and it was just an inch wider than the chair. I worked on it and worked on it; I got to the point that I could zoom right — whoosh – and spin on that wheel and be facing the camera. It was brilliant. It was probably the best scene of my career. It didn’t make it in.”

If this were a show about a generic female crime fighter, it wouldn’t be bad. But it’s not. It’s about Wonder Woman and what Kelley has done, despite the character’s love of flying, is to bring her down to earth and not in a good way. He underplays her origin, reduces her scope and waters down her motivation. Wonder Woman is a bigger than life character who should inspire awe. And there are moments where he writes her that way but for the most part it just feels like Diana Themyscira is a wonderful woman but hardly a Wonder.

All the script reviews I've read so far have not been kind.

Rucka started writing it after the whole Final Crisis thing, and it takes place right after Max Lord was killed by Wonder Woman (which was something Rucka also wrote and was named the best female DC character moment in that one poll previously posted).

So, it's probably not the original.

I know Max Lord is alive again now, but I don't know if he's back in Checkmate or not.

Bendis and Maleev Talk "Moon Knight" - Comic Book Resources (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=30774)

The writer is taking an approach to the character as "a man who loves his personalities" and is looking for ways to have them work together. With his new role in the Secret Avengers, "wouldn't it be interesting if his psyche was more emboldened by this" and adapted the personalities of the Avengers, Bendis remarked.

“And wouldn't it be fun to see the criminals of the Marvel universe not know how to deal with this completely insane person who thinks he's Spider-Man one day, Wolverine the next?”

...

"He doesn't have full control over his personalities, which is part of the fun," Bendis said. "Just because he wants Spider-Man or Wolverine to take over, doesn't mean that's what's going to happen." But "I'm much more interested in his character as a pro-active Avenger" than a depressive hero, Bendis added.

Oh. Ok.

Well, I'll buy anything with Maleev art in it, but... uh... ok.

Also of note in the article:

Asked what was the first thing that popped into their heads about "Moon Knight," both Bendis and Maleev said "Sienkiewicz." Bendis added that they are working with Bill Sienkiewicz on "Daredevil: End of Days." "With the deepest respect I have for him, I almost try to not look at his issues—I don't want to be influenced by them," Maleev said. "The books sitting on my desk right now are not Bill Sienkiewicz 'Moon Knight.'"

Now THAT sounds cool.

Beyond "The Boys" #50 - Comic Book Resources (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=30514)

JD, the new Highland Laddie is out today.

Finally tracked down a copy of this. What had been kinda cute, albeit unnecessary, so far really dropped a bomb in the last issue. Beyond make Wee Hughie even more loveable, the reveal at the end could signal the end of things and a serious rift amongst Hughie & Butcher. I have been saying that the last few Boys have been lacking...and now I realize, without Hughie there is no soul. Looking very forward to him coming back, and the last 2 years of this, which will sadly be over faster than it sounds, should be a hell of a ride. Ennis has perfected a formula that he really hit strides with in HITMAN, and I think that, at the end, this series is going to stand proudly alongside PREACHER as his best work.

And I got my copy of Simon Pegg's bio NERD DO WELL...so it's a great day.

Rumor: Will DJ Caruso Direct ‘Preacher’? (http://www.slashfilm.com/dj-caruso-direct-preacher/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+slashfilm+%28%2FFilm%29)

In September producer Moretz told Total Film Magazine that “Another unnamed director has apparently signed on.” We haven’t had any leads on this until today. One of my well placed Hollywood spys informs me that Disturbia/Eagle Eye helmer DJ Caruso is in talks to direct a big screen adaptation of Preacher. This is said to be all dependent on the box office of his latest film, I Am Number Four. I have not been able to double source this rumor, but I thought I’d throw it out there

[Update: Kevin Smith tweeted the following in response to the above: PRESS CORRECTION: @slashfilm - Preacher was never "set up" at View Askew with a $25mil budget. At one point, Garth & Steve grabbed a beer & burger with me & @SMosier at the Tribeca Grill, where we said "Use our names for whatever our names are worth." Our names were worth bupkis. @SMosier & I pitched it to BobWeinstein, who said "I don't get it. This is a comic book? The Crow I get. This? No." And that was the extent of our involvement with Preacher: a beer & burger & a no from Bob. It was Rachel Talalay's flick; me & @SMosier were just fans of the book & the creative team of Garth & Steve. James Marsden was never involved during this period (which wasn't even a period, so much as a three day stretch). So strange to watch a fiction become fact. Happy to have Twitter as a means to correct misinformation.]

All-Star Superman Blu-ray (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/All-Star-Superman-Blu-ray/18136/#Review)

All-Star Superman may just be the best DCU animated original movie to date. At the very least, it's the best Superman feature Timm and his team have put together. It's not only a fantastically faithful adaptation of Morrison and Quitely's 12-issue comic run, it's a riveting reinvention of Superman and his mythos, a fun but poignant look at a decidedly human superhuman, and a gripping, episodic epic all around. I doubt everyone will enjoy it as much as I did, but fans of Morrison and Quitely's comic, Superman aficionados and filmfans without any Super-baggage will be enamored. Warner's Blu-ray release makes purchasing the flick that much easier. While its video encode isn't without the usual flaws, it offers a fairly impressive image (that handily bests its DVD cousin), an excellent DTS-HD Master Audio surround track and a strong selection of top-drawer special features. DCU animation junkies shouldn't hesitate, casual superhero fans should give it serious consideration and even Superman's most ardent critics should add it to their rental queue. All-Star Superman delivers.

Yeah, I need to get this.

Caruso is good...see Salton Sea...but I think he is too simplistic a storyteller to do this justice. This is an EPIC story that, while the basic premise is simple(disenchanted preacher inherits the power of God, goes on roadtrip with argumentative love interest and morally bankrupt vampire in tow), it's all in the details...details that cannot be boiled down to 90 minutes. Keep looking.

D.J. Caruso in Talks to Direct PREACHER?

Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/48499)

PREACHER has to be all or nothing. It's irreverent but still pretty epic in scope and to use a trite expression, you can't cut corners. PREACHER deals with subject matter that no matter how gracefully handled is bound to piss a large amount of people off. But if a director is willing to risk it, they can create something special, thought-provoking, and with some truly great moments. It won't be an easy job juggling all that. If Caruso is in the running, I hope he's up to the controversial nature of the work, which for it to succeed can't be sugar-coated. It's a mean and brutal story and it should stay that way.

Yet another reason I think Caruso is the wrong man for the job.

Thanks for the heads up...what were your overall thoughts on Highland Laddie? I have to say I am not really keen on the subject of Jennifer Blood...but it's Ennis...no brainer.

I enjoyed Highland Laddie overall, and I'm actually really glad that Hughie and *censored to avoid spoiler* were able to patch things up within it, but like you, I am really ready for Hughie to be back in the main title with the team. I can see why Ennis did it this way, but I like you I think the main title has missed Hughie a lot and as much as I do enjoy all the weird and Irish bits in Highland Laddie, it's not the same.

The revelation of the who the old man was at the end made me want to re-read the whole thing and I did really like all the stuff between Hughie and the previously omitted name, but... yeah.

As for Jennifer Blood, I don't expect it to be much more than fun. Forgettable, but fun. It'd probably be smarter just to wait for the trade, but I like to support Ennis with my $, especially when it's for a book not by the Big 2.

Great read. I heart GM forever.

Amazon.com: You originally started with Batman in Arkham Asylum. How has your view of the Dark Knight changed since then, now that you’ve returned to the character?

Grant Morrison: Well, Arkham was kind of responding to the Batman of the time. You know, Frank Miller had just done his Batman and kind of recreated the character as a much more driven, obsessed vigilante. So, with Arkham Asylum we wanted to do something quite different. I think the Dark Knight…was so American and rooted in the hard-boiled and pulp fiction and some of the big themes of American cinema. So we [wanted] to do a Batman back then that was inspired by European cinema. So, we’re kind of taking the idea of Batman and making it much more European, which meant, you know, that it was more ambiguous; it was shifty and shadowy, and the character was slightly undermined by the portrayal--you know, he was a mommy’s boy; he was kind of obsessed [to] an unhealthy degree. So, we were kind of psychologically critiquing that take on Batman, which wasn’t necessarily Miller’s take, but a lot of writers who followed Miller took Batman a little too far down the path of psychopath.

Interesting.

Also: more Seaguy coming!

Different artist. The artist for Ennis' Crossed was Jacen Burrows, who is doing Neonomicon with Alan Moore right now (and is someone who credited me for getting him into Godspeed You Black Emperor).

Crossed was originally just going to be the Ennis book, but they decided to spin it off since it was so successful. It is definitely an Ennis/Burrows creation.

So far, there has only been one other limited series by David Lapham (who I love), but once this one is over, he'll be doing another limited and a one-shot. I don't believe any of them have anything to do with each other beyond being in the same universe.

You might check out the trade of Lapham's when it comes out. It's not as good, IMO, but it's still really nasty and fun.

Matthew Vaughn to bring in THE GOLDEN AGE of superheroes!

Matthew Vaughn can't seem to quit the old superhero genre, can he? With KICK-ASS representing the youthful superhero, and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS representing the superhero in their heyday, now he's going into the retirement years with his hopefully next project, THE GOLDEN AGE, according to Deadline. In THE GOLDEN AGE, based on a still-to-be-released comic by Jonathan Ross and Tommy Lee Edwards, elderly superheroes come out of retirement to help their grandkids when their middle-age parents threaten disaster for the world. Vaughn thinks the success of movies like THE EXPENDABLES and RED make the time ripe for a project like this. "You have these great star names and they?re mainly playing supporting roles now. I want to give them the lead again and let them have some fun.? His cast wish list includes the likes of Clint Eastwood, Warren Beatty, and Jack Nicholson.

Marvel Announces Big Shots Initiative - Comic Book Resources (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=30889)

http://pics.livejournal.com/adgy/pic/0089gdr3/s640x480

Marvel is proud to announce Big Shots! A brand new initiative, Big Shots spotlights three major launches of all-new ongoing series for the Marvel Universe’s hardest hitting heroes by the comic industry's top creative talent!

Kicking off with Moon Knight #1 in May, the Eisner Award-winning team of Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev as they delve deep into the psyche of the titular hero and embark on his greatest adventure yet. Then, the world’s most feared vigilante – Frank Castle – returns to clean up the streets of Marvel Universe this June in The Punisher #1, from a blockbuster creative team that will have everybody talking. Finally, Matt Murdock returns to New York this July in Daredevil #1 to reclaim his place in the Marvel Universe. But where does the man known as Daredevil belong?

“Fans are going to love what we have in store with Big Shots,” said Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. “We’re taking some of the best Marvel characters that we all know and love and sending them in a brand new direction with some Grade A talent. We want to reach a whole new set of readers while at the same time appeal to long time fans of these great heroes and Big Shots is how we’re doing it.”

Interesting. Fingers crossed that Mark Millar is writing Punisher. Or maybe Brubaker? Or maybe Rucka doing either of the others?????

Still, most assumed that he would be taking on Xerxes after Man of Steel, or at least sometime in the future.

Vulture reports that Warner Bros. wants Snyder?s attention focused squarely on Man of Steel at the moment, as sources tell them that the story is suffering some ?major third act problems? and the studio wants to get the film out as soon as possible. In addition, Vulture hears that Snyder?s upcoming Sucker Punch has not exactly been testing great. Snyder wrote the script to Xerxes, and one assumes that he would at least stay on to produce the film. Ritchie hasn?t agreed to direct the film yet, but the offer?s out to him, and WB seems to think he?s their guy, so now the ball?s in his court. Nevertheless, it does appear that Snyder won?t be directing the flick. Hit the jump for more on the project.

[Update -- The Playlist reports that while Ritchie may have considered the project, he will not direct Xerxes. The report confirms Snyder likely is too busy for Xerxes, which leaves the high profile gig open to any number of directors in the coming months.]

Not surprised that Sucker Punch isn't testing well...pretty sure it's gonna go over folks heads because it's so odd. Probably going to tank and after a while will gather cult status.

I've never seen Friday Night Lights, so I don't know what to make of this, but the whole project seems like it's going to be horrible so far...

Doc, you watch that show, don't you?

Hell yes! You should too. Go get the DVDs.

BUT

Skip anything involving her in season two. Seriously. Just read the episode guides or something.

I find her really attractive but I get the feeling people either dig her or hate her. If someone wanted to tell me that they thought she was ugly and talentless I wouldn't put up much of a fight despite disagreeing with them.

Not sure if that milquetoast opinion is worth anything.....

30 Days of Night: Night, Again #1 (of 4)
Joe Lansdale (w) • Sam Kieth (a & c)
Fleeing the site of a secondary vampire infestation in the cold, wilds of Alaska, a band of survivors arrive at a climate change facility during the final days of a long period of extended daylight. The inhabitants of the research compound are trying to determine the nature of a strange object found in the ice when the survivors arrive, leading to a frightening and bloody confrontation between humans and vampires and an odd and unexpected guest!

Yep, gonna need to buy that.

I don't think it's really novel or interesting how she's going to muse on the humdrums of housewife duties while blowing people up. EDIT: From the comments, a comment by the publisher:

As for the practical question of what happens to any overfunding? Well, it's true, it doesn't get refunded. We'll be using those funds to do a number of project related things. The first and foremost is going to be managing the shipping costs on (so far) 238 books. We had figured on shipping lots of these, but not this many. This will also enable us to upgrade the book, whether something subtle or something obvious. It'll also allow for and even more insanely gorgeous limited edition. And if it goes beyond that? We'd love to bring Michael Zulli to Comic-Con this year, where we'll be debuting the book. And who knows.? Maybe the momentum will keep going. Be assured that whatever happens, it'll go towards continuing bring out amazing projects by incredible artists. We've already got two projects in the pipeline from Fables artist Joao Ruas and illustration legend Barron Storey.

John August to Pen Re-Write of THE STRANGE ADVENTURES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT for Ron Howard? (http://collider.com/john-august-the-strange-adventures-of-hp-lovecraft-ron-howard/77255/)

Here?s the synopsis of The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft from the comic?s official website:
Toiling away as a timid and eccentric writer of pulp horror stories, H.P. Lovecraft, is powerless in the world? in love with a girl who doesn?t love him back, mired in a profession that inspires no respect and frozen in the grip of a terrible writer?s block. Until one day when everything changes. Lovecraft comes in contact with an ancient book that passes onto him an insidious curse: whenever he sleeps, his darkest nightmares come true and are loosed on the world. Suddenly, this shy and bumbling writer becomes both an unwitting god of destruction and the only man who can fight the wickedness he unleashes. It?s a fantastical revision of the life and work of H.P. Lovecraft, a story in the mold of the classic Universal horror movies. A weird tale indeed.

Best bit:

JG: There always been a lot of rumours that DC was quite uncomfortable with a lot of the content in The Authority, to the point that the book was censored a lot. Some rumours seem to suggest that many of the content issues involved Apollo and Midnighter, is this true?

MM: DC didn’t like the book. It had become this runaway success when everything else was collapsing, which made it especially hard for them, but it just wasn’t stuff they wanted to see in a superhero comic. They had their edgy crime and horror books, but they didn’t like to see controversy and superheroes mixed in the same way. They’re custodians of America’s icons and part of a massive multinational. Naturally, I suppose they were just fearful of their jobs. Nobody there wanted a man who looked like Batman kissing a man who looked like Superman, but that’s exactly what Warren gave them when he created the book (laughs).

If you watched the video I posted yesterday where McDuffie spoke of what it means to be a black writer in comics, you see how he dealt with constant silliness and pigeonholing: with intelligence and the ability to just keep doing the work he wanted to do. Instead of wasting time with bitterness or complaining, McDuffie actually did something about making comics a more diverse, welcoming place.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!

It's the origin of the Transitive Property of DC Media!!!!!!!!!! I FINALLY FOUND IT!!!

9) Barbara Gordon only became Batgirl because the television show demanded it.
The producer of the late-1960s television series, William Dozier, requested that the comic add a new female counterpart to Batman, because Betty Kane, the former Batwoman, was long gone. The television show needed a new female character, and they wanted the comics to keep step. So Commissioner Gordon's librarian daughter Barbara suited up as Batgirl for the first time in 1967. Alfred, Bruce Wayne's butler, was also dead in the comics ? but the comics creators brought him back to life at Dozier's request. Alfred returned in one of Batman's weirdest stories, in which the supernatural mystery villain, the Outsider, turned out to be Alfred in disguise.

Welll, maybe. Ellis only wrote the original script and has said that he's not sure how much of what he wrote survived. Hopefully most of the dialogue will at least be intact, because that's what he's best at.

I'd like to watch it, for sure.

Cyclops looks like a chick, but I think it's cool that Armor is in the show. She's funny.

That looks like as if Spidey ran through the closets of Gambit, the Rocketeer, Indiana Jones and Beetlejuice.
