The 2011 Major League Soccer season is the upcoming 16th season for Major League Soccer in the year 2011. The Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC will make their MLS debuts. The 34 game per team regular season will start on March 15 and end on October 23.
Each team will play a balanced schedule; playing every team twice: home and away. With the two new clubs being based on the west coast the league announced on 28 January 2011 that Houston Dynamo would move into the Eastern Conference.
Further, the Kansas City Wizards rebranded as Sporting Kansas City and moved into their new stadium at Village West in Kansas City, Kansas.

Chivas Home opener March 19th. Can't wait.
New coach, new sponsor(Corona), a bunch of new players mostly on defense.
One thing is for sure we will have a great Defense, I am still not sure where the scoring will come from.

Juan Pablo Angel, definitely a man The Galaxy can count on for goals, big question is who plays upfront with him. Should be a fun winning season for LA

Im very excited for the upcoming season. Should be some good new rivalries in the Pacific NW with expansion teams starting up in Portland and Vancouver.
Its nice having so many MLS teams training in AZ, I've attended a couple of the preseason games being played out here and its got me fired up for the real games to begin.

nice to have the team training for awhile with no beckham in sight.
Might see donovan up top with JPA, might see him in mid with a healthy dose of barrett, kirovski, and cristman to supplement up top (::shudder:: )
I'm attempting an away trip this year to see the Galaxy play either July 30th in vancouver or Aug 3rd in Portland (or if the wife can stand it, possibly both).

Can someone explain Beckham's contract? Does it say that Beckham doesn't have to start the season with him?
EDIT: NVM. Just read on LA Times that he will rejoin the club after the camp in Arizona.

With Houston's and KC's stadiums, that leaves only San Jose, NE, and DCU without SSS. DCU and NE aren't remotely close to SSS, whereas the Quakes have at least started the clearing of the property where they hope to build. If the Quakes get it done, it ought to be a terrific success.

Speaking of Houston, why did the MLS allow AEG to own two teams?
Even though the Safeco Field looks to be the permanent home of the Sounders, they still need their own stadium. Fake grass FTL.

Well, fake grass is an issue to be sure, but no way that Seattle has the means to build a stadium big enough to house all their supporters. It's one thing to build a stadium to hold 20K, quite another to support the 40K that the Sounders would need.

Ehhh the Galaxy's attendance is pretty solid but I'm pretty sure there were a number of games last year that didnt sell out/reach capacity. Seattle's fan base is really impressive, wish the U.S. team would play more games there. Potentially one of the few places they can actually get a home field advantage

Wow, not bad prediction, too bad it wasn't JPA who scored.
It was a nice road win in a difficult place to play. Especially since they didn't have JPA, Gonzo and Ricketts. But the Galaxy do have the best backup keeper in MLS and Saunders displayed why last night. A lot of big saves won the game for the Galaxy. Especially important since Becks was ineffective, Landon was getting brutalized, and Mike Magee was invisible.

Har har har :nono:
Im not sure how it work to have a team in Phx. As much as Id love a team here, it is way too damn hot during the MLS season to have an outdoor stadium. The only indoor arena would be UofP Stadium, and its would bring up the same concerns that Jobing.com Arena has... a stadium in the middle of nowhere.

Saunders and AJ De La Garza were my men of the match.
Barrett is not a guy who's going to wow you with his feet. But he had a pretty good workrate and was forcing Seattle players to fight for the ball.
Magee and Barrett at times didn't seem to anticipate where Beckham was going to put the ball. (outside of lots of giveaways from sir david in the 1st half) I hope when JPA plays he'll bring up the flow.

Melfice, I was there too....froze out butts off, too bad we couldn't get a victory. Don't think I've ever been to a game where a team had THREE goals called back for various infractions. Plus a non-call on an obvious handball in the box.
I'm sure the Galaxy would like to play at least one game this season that wasn't impacted by the weather.
Melfice
March 20th, 2011, 10:14 PM
Yeah KHenry! What a game and the goals that were called back lol Insane I tell ya, but it was a good game over all. LA gave up the first goal, but then took control of the game afterward.
I'm thinking about buying a big 6 pack game deal for the Galaxy. I did enjoy going there tonight even tho it was WET and COLD as a mother haha
Did you enjoy the game, KHenry?

March 21st, 2011, 09:13 AM
Certainly the Galaxy played better than againist Seattle, despite still missing Gonzalez (his presence was sorely missed), Ricketts (NBD since Saunders is excellent) and JPA for a half. Even though I've never been more miserable at any sporting event in my life, once the game started, you didn't notice it. And I feel so fortunate to live 15 minutes from the HDC, the best Soccer Specific stadium in the country. It makes even the worst days like yesterday acceptable.

March 21st, 2011, 02:37 PM
for the first time in awhile I decided to skip the home opener. Power outage from 2:00 pm on, a sick wife, and flooding in the parking garage meant a no go.
Sounds like it was pretty wild at the stadium. Numerous people told me the ponchos were of lesser quality than something you'd find at a 99 cent store and did almost more bad than good. :) I got an e-mail this morning that for those season ticket holders who braved the storm, the Galaxy are giving them free tickets to the April 2 game.
Another rocket from Juninho. He and Cardozo might have a great partnership forming. Cardozo seems to be small, but plays big. Thought Angel looked pretty good in being able to read passes once he came in. Although with those pitch conditions you can't really read a whole lot..
KHenry14
March 22nd, 2011, 08:06 AM
The ponchos were essentially blue colored Saran Wrap, and they worked OK. They'd have worked better had there been no wind, but the blustery conditions meant that the poncho hood wouldn't stay up, so your head got wet no matter what you did.
Not sure about Cardoza. He seems to be talented (and he is a little guy) but right now, I think Michael Stephens is a better bet for a sub midfielder. I suspect that the conditions might have impacted Cardoza's game a lot, but since there's a long way to go this season, I'm more than willing to see what he can do. But I wouldn't be surprised to see Bruce start Cardoza at some point and move Juninho to D-Mid role.

Javier Morales owned the Galaxy last night, and the rest of RSL did as well. I really don't have too much to say about Gill tho. It was more about Morales I thought haha.
Well the whole team did very well against LA, and made the Galaxy looks like fools on the field. One thing about last night was this...the game was over after Javier Morales' penalty kick. I just kept watching to see if LA could at least get one goal to save face haha.

Philly is 2-0, but against a re-tooled Houston side and expansion Vancouver. So who knows. Donovan should be back, so we'll get to finally see him play with Angel up top (i hope). I would hope losing 4-1 would light a fire under them, but with the Galaxy you just never know.

I couldn't see what Birchall did from my vantage point in the stadium. I watched the replay at home and FSW completely missed it as well. Sounds like maybe an elbow to Ruiz's face or some contact up there. Arena was noticeably mad at Birchall as he walked off..
- Donovan's link up with Angel would've been so beautiful if he could've buried the header..
- Leonardo still missed a few assignments defensively, but I'll give some credit for scoring the goal. Still would like to see De La Garza starting..

For the life of me I couldn't figure out why the Fire didn't send Nyarko right at Heydude to try and take advantage of the obvious speed difference. Glad they didn't, but to be honest, I just don't get why Frankie was even out their if AJDLG and Franklin were available.
Still, a road win is a road win, and five out of a possible nine points on the road trip isn't bad, but some better officiating and not hitting the woodwork and this team would have taken all three games.

Missed the Galaxy/Portland game due to the kings game as well, but do want to say, that after attending 2 home games here in portland in the timbers army section, I just have to say the atmosphere is insane. Haven't been to a seattle game yet, but its pretty crazy there too. After going to a lot of galaxy games, and comparing the two, the portland fans are just nuts. I left LA in 2008, so I don't remember the ACB being that large when I was there, I always remember a section devoted to what might have been them or the riot squad. They were loud and active, not doubting that but the timbers army section has at least 3600 seats. 14 sections. and from what i saw, most everyone besides me had green apparel, a timbers scarf and knew the chants. by the 2nd half i had a scarf and knew some of the chants. it certainly makes the game 10x more fun being amongst them.
Timbers had a good reputation with their crowds prior to being in MLS. Good to see the atmosphere up there. Those portland/seattle games should be fun.
Red Bulls game next week will probably be another sellout. Should be a good one
yeah i realized when i was there that they weren't new fans, most of these guys and girls had been that passionate about a second division team for years beforehand.
fun stuff.

The blog is spot on. This is what MLS has been for 15 years, a gritty underskilled, very physical league. Its not going to change to a finesse league over night. It will take many years to change.
I guess I have a few issue with it. Seattle does not have the best supporters in MLS and they happen in more than 3s as we saw in yesterday Chivas USA game making it 4.
We will see a few more before all is said and done

I was watching one of the Serie A games today, and I think I know what you are talking about. For a good amount of time, they just keep passing the ball in the midfield never setting up attacks on goal. Seems kinda like a slower style of soccer to me. But, I can't judge just from one game tho :ko:

I think the author meant quantity of fans, not qualtiy of fans, and Seattle does have more fans in attendence than any other team.
With that said, I've no prbolem with the Mullan suspension. And I'd encourage MLS to go after these guys harder than they are. Only that will stop these fouls. OK, that and improving the quality of the officiating. There MLS (and the USA) have major problems.

The technical ability is excellent but Italy has a history of defence first football which has eased decidedly over recent seasons, but I have still been watching some games and suddenly realised I am thoroughly bored and turned it off. But I think you nailed it, the pace is just that much slower.
I remember a game once where a draw suited both teams and they ended up just passing to each other for 90 minutes, I doubt that would be tolerated now, but with Italian football who knows.

MLS has tried several time to get a good crowd in SD its has never happened. the Real game drew an announced 38K really it was closer to 28K. back in 99 they had the all star game there and drew maybe 10K.
San Diego is NOT a viable market for a MLS team. Even the Clippers left SD, as did the SD Gull. not enough support.

I got an online survey from MLS last week. About 15-20 minutes of whether I'd prefer another LA team to be either downtown or in pomona, and whether I'd follow a team in either location more than the other. Assuming they were doing it to study a chivas usa move?

Ives had an article up earlier that JP Angel was headed to Chivas USA (giving LA the dp slot for keane). Haven't seen that confirmed yet though.
"When David Beckham came and trained at Spurs recently he couldn't speak highly enough about the Galaxy, their fans and the league in general," Keane added. "so I can’t wait to get over and get started.”

JPA is a classy guy. I wish him the best. But too bad, he's with the Yankee Chivas.

Eddie Johnson has signed with MLS and Chivas USA is tops on the allocation list. Will they pick him up or will JPA be enough

good opening champions league win for the galaxy. could've been 3 or 4 goals.
That few minute span with Saunders and his kick saves was unreal.

Angel to Chivas for a 3rd round pick. Do have to give credit to Concacaf, their video feed was pretty good for last night's game and it was free!

it looks like MLS and EJ's reps are playing the blame game for the deal falling through.

Chivas finally announce Angel acquisition (http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/08/17/its-official-juan-pablo-%C3%A1ngel-joins-chivas-usa)
the announcer was pretty awful though but it is nice having options to watch games you wouldn't be able to watch otherwise, or delayed.

the Robbie Keane presser was pretty good, can't wait till tomorrow.
slightly off topic when Lieweekly, was thanking Uncle Phil he mentioned that him and the missus were at odds over another team in the area. I wonder what that was about and if it had to do with the Kings or an NFL team, anybody have a clue.

I really hate TV rights. Sitting down to watch the Fire playing Toronto. Not on MLS Direct Kick tonight, but is playing on CSNC (Comcast Chicago), which is fine, since I picked up the Sports Pack as well, for FSC mainly. But it is blacked out. What the hell? It's not on the ESPNs, it isn't on FSC or +...WHY THE HELL IS IT BEING BLACKED OUT?! Something to do with pro games not being able to be broadcast outside their market? Why offer me non-local sports stations if I can't watch the freaking games on those stations?
Sorry, frustrating.
I notice this with Center Ice too. I just don't know why every televised game is not automatically linked into Direct Kick/Center Ice. Grrrrrrr......

Worth the wait, wasn't it? ;)
There were times in the first have that the Galaxy looked incredibly good. But ya gotta give the Smurfs credit, they didn't quit, and they pressed the Galaxy hard. But Mike Magee OWNS SJ, so it was no surprise that his goal clinched the game. LOL
BTW, the Angel City Brigade put together the funniest supporters group bit ever last night. Welcome to Facebook - Log In, Sign Up or Learn More (http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=10150279642378137&set=o.194821234927&type=1&theater)

lots of irish flags around the hdc...
I had to watch this game on tv. What I liked about Keane is...not only was he working hard, but when someone didn't make the correct run or get him the ball quick enough and in space, he was talking and yelling about it. Even after the sub out he was talking to everyone from the bench.
Those fox sports announcers are hilarious. You'd think the galaxy are now better than manchester united and barcelona combined.

Galaxy clinched the playoffs last night.
For about 20 minutes, some pretty darn good soccer.
Cardozo - I don't remember him being that good on his feet. He's got a really soft touch and was controlling balls in the air in seamless fashion. Liked it.

They announced it as the Phil Anschutz MLS Trophy, or something along those lines, and had he and Landon lift it together.
HDC was rockin. My throat is completely shot.
So awesome.

At the risk of being labeled a homer, I gotta say, the 2011 LA Galaxy are the best MLS side ever. Undefeated at home, three losses over all (one of which was a throwaway at the end of the season) this team had it all. From top notch goal keeping (including Mike Magee!) The MLS defender of the year in Omar Gonzalez, the #2 assist man in Becks, team goal scoring leader in Landon, and a world class stiker in Keane-o.
I don't know what this team will look like next year, but right now I'm savoring it.

Melfice, too bad. The atmosphere was fantastic, for all the playoffs really. So much fun. MLS is also changing the rule going forward so of the teams in MLS Cup, the team with the higher regular season point total will host the game.
One of the guest reps Sunday said while a sellout was close anyway, the second the galaxy scored in the semi-final, the final sold out within minutes. Luckily they gave us season ticket holders a free ticket with our accounts :)
Not sure your schedule with work or life, but if you so desire, I got this e-mail:
To thank you for being part of our 2011 MLS Cup Championship, you're invited to come to The Home Depot Center TODAY (Tuesday, November 22) between 4-7 p.m. or on Wednesday, November 23, between 10 a.m.-1 p.m. to view and take pictures with the Philip F. Anschutz championship trophy and other Galaxy trophies.
In addition, the first 2,011 Season Ticket Holders, Mini or Partial Planholders, and Group Leaders in attendance will be able to take home a piece of The Home Depot Center stadium field on which the Galaxy won their third MLS championship! (Limit one per account.)
The TEAM LA Store will be open for you to get your Championship gear, so bring your cameras and come on down to get your piece of history.
We hope to see you here,
LA Galaxy Service Team
