I am Stunned That This Could Happen in Profesional Football.

The integrity of the sport was put on the line tonight and the results are a complete failure. To call the pass at the end of the Seahawk vs. Packers game as a offensive reception in the first place was beyond belief. Then to review it and confirm it as a reception and touchdown just left me with no words to describe what just happened.

It wasn't even just this one call but it happened not only throughout the game but this whole past weekend was a complete disappointment by all of the men in stripes officiating the NFL. Every single game not only had just a few bad calls but calls that were so blatantly either non calls or wrong calls it was a shame to even watch the game. Now the officiating has gotten so bad that it has affected the final outcome of a game.

Yesterday and tonight has also been the perfect storm for controversial calls. I know the refs have generally done a poor job, but there have been some very strange plays for week 3.

I'm only slightly curious to see what the NFL's official statement will be tomorrow morning on the end of this game.

"These officials were thrown into a bad situation and they are doing the best that they can. Even though we sometimes don't agree with the outcome of some of these calls we do stand behind the their official rulings."

Isn't it in the NFL rulebook that simultaneous catches are giving to the offensive team? I don't really know, but I stopped watching football a couple years ago because of very inconsistent refereeing. At least now the refs are consistently bad.

Also... Why didn't the defender hit down the ball and win the game? He shouldn't have tried to intercept that ball.

You are correct that simultaneous catches are givin to the receiver. However this wasnt considered a simultaneous catch per the rulebook.

Rule 8 Section 1 Article 3 Item 5 of the NFL rule book states:

Item 5: Simultaneous Catch. If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control. If the ball is muffed after simultaneous touching by two such players, all the players of the passing team become eligible to catch the loose ball.

The Packers clearly gained control first.

Why do people say "isn't he supposed to hit it down anyways"? That isn't law or a rule. Also ask that Titan guy how that worked out for him hitting it down.

Also there was a huge Offensive PI where Tate pushed down Shields so right there the game should have ended. And no they don't usually call Offensive or Defensive PI but it can be called and if the actual Refs were that they would call one like that. Normally you don't see that bad of a push.

The best part is the refs standing over them while the Packer has the bowl in his arms against his chest while the other dude has one arm around his pads/neck and not even on the ball.

As @mortreport is reporting, an agreement between NFL and NFLRA is at hand and both sides will work to have officials working this weekend.
