Not a recommendation by any stretch, but if any of you want a shutter release for REAL cheap, check this out. Suppose it wouldn't be bad in a pinch if you lose/forget/break a different one.

Amazon.com: Remote Shutter Release Cord for Canon EOS 5D, 50D, 40D, 20D, & 10D Digital SLR Cameras: Electronics

For $1 though, I'd take it if I had that camera.

Thanks! Set it on a tripod. I can't find my shutter release so I set it to shoot after two seconds. Just thought I would get the horizon set (which still needs to be fixed in a couple) and not worry about it moving too much with pushing the button.

The last two were at 25 and 30 seconds. Gotta find my shutter release so I can use the BULB setting again. :(

OK kids, I need some advice.

I DO NOT want to have to learn all this crap. I want a mostly automatic camera for my Newbie wife. I DO NOT want to have to show her how it works. I will send her to a class to learn the basics of photography if needed.

I want a decent body, 1 or 2 decent lenses, and freedom from having to be tech support while she's taking pics of the kids this summer while I'm at work.

Tell me what to buy. This is an early Birthday present.

She will plug it into her iMac, upload her photos, import them into iPhoto, and upload them from there to Facebook and Shutterfly.

Micro 4/3 is a good camera system that has interchangeable lenses and are smaller than DSLR's. Maybe a good option for a mom with kids as they're less bulky than DSLR's. This is a format created by Panasonic and Olympus. They get pretty good reviews.

Well, I geuss this is the best place to pose this question. I am looking to step up to a DSLR from a mid size camera (Sony Cybershot). I have had the Sony for about 5 years now and have been really happy with it. It is my first digital camera and is really easy to use, although I would have to say that I probably don't use it to its full potential, I don't even recall reading the manual. So with this next camera I really want something that I can dive into and learn the ins and outs about. Basically I want it for normal family use, this would include taking pictures of my kids baseball, gymnastics, cheerleading and other activities. The one that I think I need the help with is ice hockey. My son has been playing for four years and I don't have any good pictures of him beacause I just don't think my current camera can capture it. I have seen pictures from the other parents using their DSLR's and was very impressed. I am not looking to break the bank but realize I need to drop a descent amount for quality. I think I am in the $1,500 range, preferably less. Then I saw this post from RR and might look into it:

Amazon.com: Canon EOS 60D 18 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS UD Standard Zoom Lens: Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-60D-3-0-Inch-18-135mm-Standard/dp/B0040JHVC2/ref=sr_1_2?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1307139448&sr=1-2)

GF3 is supposed to be announced this month, but i hear it's even smaller than the GF2. that would make the lens mount bigger than the camera body itself, gross...

i do like the look of the G3 and the new 16mp sensor, but it's not enough to make me ditch the GF1 just yet. i'm hoping one of them will release a rangefinder style body with a built-in EVF.

So, has FBJ been saving his money? Lots of talk over at nikonrumors.com about a major announcement from Nikon in August. Supposedly its the long awaited D4 and D400. Also an article from Japan showing D4 and D900 illustrations.

So what can we expect? The D3 was a game changer that got Nikon back into the sports and photojournalism markets. Four years later you have to expect they have something good up their sleeves. More pixels? Faster frame rates? More senitivity? HD video? Built in WiFi? I'm on pins and needles!

I was probably seventy-five to a hundred feet from each of the subjects.

With the mirror 500mm, it's easy to be stealthy. These individuals had no idea I was photographing them. The lens itself isn't any longer than my 24-70mm. Couldn't be anywhere near as inconspicuous with my next longest FL lens (70-200 f/2.8 VR), which is twice the physical length of the mirror 500.

With the fixed focal length and f-stop, it's best to have the subject be in direct lighting to get the fastest shutter speeds. I cranked the ISO to 1000 yesterday to help with that. 500 would have gotten me what I needed, but I actually wanted to have the extra noise. And, with that ISO in those lighting conditions, my shutter speeds were routinely in the 1/3200th range, so there was zero worry about camera shake blurr. Any softness to the images I got was related to the amount of attention I paid to ensuring perfect focus.

About as good as you're going to get without having a full size sensor really. Good feature set, good controls. Good low light response (low noise).

At the risk of sounding lazy, and not sure if it deserves a new thread I am struggling in taking good photos of my sons ice hockey games. Now I have not pulled out my canon 60D for dummies yet, a series of books with guys like me in mind. The best setting I have found so far is the sports setting (duh). But this is also in the auto side of the dial. As I shoot the pictures I notice the iSO is at 3200. I would say that 80 to 85% of the shots are really good, but if enlarged you can still see a blur, particular with the stick when someone is shooting, I have not yet ventured into the manual settings. Is this where I need to be to improve my shots? What are the settings I should be looking at? Any help would be much appreciated.

Go manual and make sure your shutter spead is high like 500th or so and it will stop anything. If you are at TSC, use the Flourescent setting on the light temp. Open your aperture to let in more light so you can get a faster shutter speed. Once you use manual for awhile you can set everything in one or two test shots and once it's set it is always correct and won't need much tweaking/development.

Thanks, I will give it a shot. We don't play at TSC this year. That is also something that throws everything off, some rinks are well lit and some are horribly lit, add that with all the scuff marks on the glass and it becomes quite an edventure.

Hockey is tough to photograph under the best of circumstances to say nothing of poorly lit local rinks. Really helps to have fast lenses in this instance and a camera that does well at high ISO.

my 1st serious camera was a "3rd gen". i don't think they'll replace DSLR until they can get a bigger sensor in them. the only camera of this type with a sensor that can compete with a DSLR sensor is the sony NEX, but their flaw is lens selection. Micro 4/3rds already has an awesome array of lenses and a good amount of varying body types. The last set of pics i posted were taken with an Olympus E-PM1, aka "Pen Mini." i have a 14mm pancake lens on it and the sucker fits in my pocket! 3rd gen cameras i think are good as 2nd bodies, but for now i don't think they'll replace the dslr.

One, it's not a today thing. It's in the future. Two, if you're just starting out, getting a DSLR isn't a bad idea. If you have all the gear though, might not want to rush out and buy a ton more when in five years you (potentially) might be left behind with the new tech.

Looks like a bad ass camera, as does the recently announced Canon Eos-1Dx. Maybe it's just me but there seems to be more buzz about the D4, eventhough the Canon has some better specs. Maybe because there is a firm release date and it's available for preorder now. The Canon has a few more pixels, shoots more frames per second and has slightly better screen. The Nikon, however, seems more refined and has some new innovative technology. Well this should make for an interesting smack down. Both are pretty awesome.

I can't drop $6k on a camera so I'm a little more curious about the D800 with it's rumored 36mp sensor. It could turn out to be a replacement for both the D700 and D300 since it would still have superior resolution even when shooting in the cropped DX mode. Also, the rumor that there will be a version with no anti-aliasing filter is intriguing. It makes sense. If you are shooting at such high res, why add blur unless you have too? If you need it, do it in Photoshop or whatever later.

Alright, here is one for you photo detectives. This was posted on Hammond's blog, looking at the FxIF on it, its flash at 1/500th on a 1D mk IV, which has a max sync speed of 1/300th. As some of you (RR) are now in the stadiums, I was wondering if you knew if some arenas are now using hi speed sync flashes (multiple flashes for the duration of the shutter), or is it a really, really slow flash that burns for the whole shutter action? Or something else going on?

For those unclear about max sync speeds, with slower shutter speeds what happens is the front curtain of the shutter opens fully, the flash is fired, then the rear curtain falls. With higher shutter speeds (above 1/300th in the case of the 1d mk IV) the front curtains starts to fall, then before it reaches the bottom, the rear curtain starts to fall, so you get a slit traversing the frame. If you try and use a flash when beyond the max sync speed, only the slit between the two curtains will be exposed (either the very top or very bottom of the frame depending if you are using front or rear curtain sync) because flash duration is usually very fast (studio flashes are somewhere in the range of 1/6000s for t.5, 1/2000 for t.1), and will extinguish well before the slit has time to traverse the whole frame.

Thoughts? You used to see this every so often, but it was always with a CCD camera that had an electronic shutter (original 1D). No idea how he is doing it with a mechanical shutter.

Probably Hypersync Pocketwizards
http://www.pocketwizard.com/inspirations/technology/hypersync_fpsync/

or a longer duration flash could also make sense as long as it can fulfill the shutter speed. I don't think multiple flashes from the unit could work but it's possible if they are fast enough I guess.

I owned one for a couple years while I shot DX cameras. When I bought my D3 (and my 14mm aspherical), I realized I didn't have much use for it any longer. Sold it for what I'd paid on eBay.

You'll like it! It's a fun lens! Play a lot with some close-ups, too. I think that lens is every bit as versatile for really creative close-in work as it is for superbig scenes.

Faster frame rate and 2 more f stops in sensitivity. Better AF and uses both SD and CF cards. A very nice camera, but $3,499 is a big price jump. Very different than Nikon's approach with the D800. Perosnally, I crave more low-light sensitivity over number of pixels recorded so I kind of like the Canon specs better. Once you get above 16MP I think you are pushing the limits of the glass anyway.

SmytheKing,

Really like the top one of the pier. Something about the softness of the water and the reflections off of it give it an ethereal quality. Nice work.
Thanks Deader. I feel the same way about that one. . .but I love how the second one feels more alive too. From the people on the top of the pier to the surfer in the water, it just has a good feel. Depending on which day you ask me, I'd say either could be my favorite. :)

Hoping to do a big project at Santa Monica Pier over the next several weeks. We'll see how that one goes and I'll post it up here if it turns out well. :)

Hey guys, I volunteered to shoot photos at my son's pre school family fun night. We are either taking portraits on a pony/horse or like a photo stand (wanted poster or jail). Do you guys have any advice as far as lighting and the such. any advice would be helpful.

I do this from time to time at my daughter's school, too. My advice: Keep it simple in a situation like that. Run an off-camera flash and slightly diffuse its light if you can. Run the camera on a tripod, too. Take some tests to set up everything, then just run them through and shoot, checking the images for closed eyes and stuff (which are greatly reduced if the flash is off-camera, I've found).

Right now I think B&H Photo SUCKS! Yeah, I know they are actually a very good company. I've been using them for many many years and have always been pleased with them. But right now I am pissed! Let me explain:

Back in February, I posted in this thread how bad ass I was because I had just pre-ordered the new Nikon D800. Well I learned a hard lesson--B&H is NOT the place to purchase a newly introduced camera. I thought, well these guys are the largest camera shop in the US so they should have a good supply of the cameras when they come out. The camera was introduced February 7. I ordered it within a minute or two of when B&H started taking pre-orders at 9:00 pm PST on Feb 6. Sounds like I got a pretty good chance of getting one of the first cameras, right? Apparently not. The camera came out a week ago and tens of thousands have been sold worldwide, but the camera is in short supply. Amazon has moved a bunch of them. Many people have even found them at their local Best Buy. Pro photographers who are part of Nikon's NPS program had their's dropped shipped to them. But, if you ordered through B&H's website, you are still waiting and they won't give you a straight answer why. People, like myself have called and are now being told that it could be the end of May before they will be able to ship pre-orders to the people who odered in those first minutes! WTF? Had I ordered through my local camera store or Amazon.com I would have my camera now! Who would have thought?

The reason I pass along this story is to give you fair warning. There will be several new and amazing cameras introduced this year from both Canon and Nikon. If you just gotta have one of the first ones, don't pre-order through B&H. Go to your local camera store and get on their list, or try Amazon.com. Otherwise you might be very disappointed.

BTW the reviews of the Nikon D800 are incredible. Even with 36 mp it still has excellent high-ISO capabilities--as good or better than the D700. DXO Labs gave the sensor in the camera it's highest rating ever.

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't/couldn't you just cancel the pre-order and get it elsewhere? I mean, I understand the frustration, I'm just curious why you'd still be waiting (if you are).

That is something I am looking into. The problem now is that the camera has gotten so much aclaim that everyone wants one. So, consequently, camera stores have long waiting lists now. If you go on Amazon today, the say your order will ship in 1 to 2 months. (They have a listing for a "used" one at $1200 over retail. People are flipping them on Ebay too for big profits.) So basically, I just made a bad choice going with B&H in this situation. But now their promise of "late May" is about the same as Amazon. Its not really B&H's fault. There are just not many cameras to be had. The "pro" NPS customers got taken care of but B&H didn't get inventory for regular mailorder. My understanding is that Adorama customers are complaining too.

There is a lot of pent up demand for this camera (and the D4) because Nikon has had to push back introducing new pro cameras for a year due to the earthquake in Japan and the floods in Thailand. They had two main factories completely wiped out. Canon, on the other hand was less affected. Supply of the new 5D Mark III is tight but you can find one if you look hard.

I will keep my place in line at B&H for now, but I will also call around to a few local camera stores and see what they can do for me. I'll keep checking Best Buy too.

From the original statement I was under the assumption that you had passed up other options because you had pre-ordered it already. I wasn't sure if there was a non-refundable deposit or something to that effect. Thanks for clarifying.

I don't really understand why someone needs to have the latest and greatest camera from Nikon or Canon. To each his own, I suppose, but that's a ton of money to spend on something that might just be minutely "better". I had enough jitters dropping a grand on my DSLR.

The D800 is quite a bit more than minutely better than B's D200.

The D4 isn't enough of an improvement over the D3 to have me clamoring for one, though.

Here's a shot I took for my Commercial Photography class. Our assignment was to photograph something glass and make it look as appealing as possible. Unfortunately I forgot the black plexi to set the glass on so I was forced to use regular backdrop paper since we can only get a short slot in the studio to allow all students the time to shoot.

FYI, I finally got my new Nikon D800 from B&H last week, 42 days after it was released (and I ordered it during the first hour it went on sale). I have to say it is pretty awesome. It is definitely not a sports camera since it only does 4 frames per second, but the image quality is amazing. It's also pretty complex with lots of pro features, so it's not really the best thing for family snapshots. What it is is a photo enthusiasts dream. It's a camera that challenges you to be a better photographer. It reminds me of when I used to shoot medium format film. You had to work a little harder to get the right image, but the results were always worth the effort.

I've been so busy with life, kids and work that I kind of lost my passion for photography lately. This camera has gotten me excited again.

So I've picked up the Nikon D5100 as my entry level dslr, with a 85mm 1.8 prime lens and a 35mm counterpart, as well as my kit 18-55mm lens. Any other advice gear wise for shooting indoor low light clubs and bands etc? Thanks!

You picked a couple good prime lenses there. Those are keepers even if you decide to move on to bigger and better bodies.

Shoot RAW. Process in Aperture or Lightroom. Even no-flash, there's more data in your images if you shoot RAW.

Thank you! I absolutely love shooting in RAW, didn't realize how much of a difference it made in post. Thanks for the advice on the programs as well, I have both but can't really tell which is best for what I'm doing. Only more time and practice can decide that I guess. Do you use lightroom as your general import/workflow?

As of right now, yes. I think I will be moving to a new Mac setup here soon, since I've become a lover of the iPad and iPhone.

I think all the photographers in this thread (all of whom have really progressed in their knowledge and skill over the last few years while I've remained rather stagnant) will agree that you should try very hard to get it as right as possible in-camera before going to post. That's what I try to do, but I do fall into the "cheap to spray and pray and fix digital images in post" trap from time to time.

I haven't been doing much lately, and I really miss it. I need to get out soon...maybe shoot some street or something. I dunno. Life is a big giant mess at the moment.

How often do you all update the firmware on your DLSR's? Do you do it your self or send it in? How important is it especially for an older model?

I think most cameras allow you to update the firmware but simply putting a file on your memory card and sticking it in your camera. As far as updating an older model, there may not be anything to update, as the updates stop coming out fairly soon after release. They want to you buy a new camera, not get more mileage out of the camera you already have.

Does anyone know the proper channels are places to sell used equipment? I have the stuff here and it looks like it's in pretty good shape. Looks like scored with this find. AF-s Nikkor 70-200mm 1:2.8GII ED Lens

fredmiranda.com. It costs something like nine bucks to register for selling, but there are no other fees, it is a heavily trafficked web site for gear and a lot of high-end stuff gets sold there.

i switched to film for all my street work...

So I guess you're liking working with film then? Do you shoot black & white negatives? I have been keeping some of my film bodies around thinking I might enjoy shooting film again sometime. It's just never happened. Back in the day I did my own processing and printing. I've since donated all my darkroom gear to my kid's school, and put my film cameras on the shelf. Something about the work flow hassel does not appeal anymore. I've gotten too used to the instant gratification of digital. Instead I am trying to learn the nuances of processing raw digital images with NX2 Capture and Photoshop.

What about the rest of you guys? What happened to all our photographers?

Luc SkyBomba
August 16th, 2012, 11:12 AM
yup, black and white. i started with tri-x 400 until Freestyle in Hollywood told me bout Arista Premium, which is basically Tri-x rebranded. costs half as much too. i don't see the processing as a hassle or anything, it's kinda rewarding to me. also having to wait before seeing my shots has helped in the editing process too. with digital you look at the review right away and tend to decide whether or not a pic is a keeper before really analyzing it. actually i turned off the review on my M8 because of that.

thanks! don't have an EVF. i had one before on my old panny GF1 and it was great when i would use my voigtlander lenses, but don't really need it with this EPM1 cause the body is so small that adapting lenses on it is kind of silly. focusing with the holga is kinda hit or miss. makes some really cool shots sometimes tho.

It has indeed been quiet. I haven't hardly had my stuff out of the safe lately, aside from a trip to Disneyland where I took my daughter's eighth birthday portraits. The itch has been nagging at me, lately. I've been thinking of renting one of Nikon's DC prime lenses and walking around Hollywood Blvd with it for an afternoon. Maybe soon.

I've also got a trip planned to Napa in early October with MotherPuck for our fifteenth anniversary. The gear will go with me for that for certain. LOTS of interesting landscapes up there.

Did have some nice luck today, though. A lady named Sarah Hall from Soho Myriad Art Consulting emailed me about purchasing the rights to print one of my b&w HDR aviation-related images on a WALL-SIZED sheet of aircraft-grade aluminum for a decorating job her firm is doing for an executive meeting room at the Hilton Newark Airport. I replied, "INTERESTED!" and am waiting for her opening offer.

Do any of you know what a realistic and fair price would be for me to charge for a single-use, print-only license for this company to fulfill their clients requirements? She says she wants to have it printed on like a wall-sized 3:2 ratio (original aspect ratio)...like a 5'x8' or something like that.

So...I've got that going for me...gungagallunga.

You know how you have those days where your friends will say stuff like, "oh man, you're such a good photographer" or "wow how did you learn to do such great stuff" and you start to feel good about the effort and time you've put in? I figured somebody would have posted a Space Shuttle shot by now! Everybody in LA was out there taking pictures--albeit mostly with iPhones and Droids. Unfortunately where I was, it was flying kind of high and there was a lot of haze. But with lots of pixels to work with and the processing power of Photoshop, I was able to pull something out.

That night I happened to be driving by LAX and saw a bunch of TV trucks and people standing on an overlook in El Segundo. I stopped and took a shot of Shuttle as they were preparing to remove it from the 747. You can see the cranes and fixture they use to lift it. The original is a 36mp image so you can zoom in and see the people working. This shot was taken from about a mile away with at 400mm on the D800.

I've been busy scanning old 35mm slides. I came across some fairly decent stuff that I shot during a two-week backpacking trip I took in the Sierras while I was in the Scouts back in 1987. I shot this with my old Nikon F1, and if I recall correctly a 28mm f/2.8 lens. I REALLY miss that camera...it was stolen from my pickup truck while I was in junior college.

Check it:

Yeah...these were scanned as raw files and processed in LR4. They'd be merde without that little trick.

sweet shots! what software are you using for scanning? i've been using silverfast cause it came with my plustek scanner, but i've been reading that a lot of people use vuescan.

This is a borrowed Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 slide scanner. I've had it for like six weeks, but couldn't get it running because Nikon no longer supports updates to Nikonscan software, so it wouldn't work with either my 64-bit Windows 7 Pro PC or my new iMac (which is also 64 bit).

I'm using VueScan's software. It works really great, especially the automatic dust-spot cleanup feature. The downside is that VueScan doesn't support the batch-feeder, so I have to sit here in my spare time and feed it one slide at a time.

Great shots FBJ! I didn't make it past cub scouts, but I did do summer camps in the Sierra and took some nice B&W photos on backpacking adventures. Who knows where those negatives went tho. At least you kept track of yours. I would love to see what I could bring out of some of my old shots with modern image processing.

Like you I'm still nostalgic over my first Nikon. It was the first camera I bought myself and fortunately I still have it. It's an FE2. I was taking a photojournalism class in college and the instructor (who was a working photog for a major daily paper) recommended that I not get the traditional 50mm lens with it. He told me to start with a 28mm 2.8. Then get a 100mm 2.8. He said learn to use those two lenses first and my pictures will be a lot more interesting... and it was true. Those were the days. If you tried to shoot sports in a gym or at night, you were pushing Tri-X to 1600 and beyond with custom chemical baths and crossing your fingers that you got something good. Plus we were bulk loading film so we could get more than 36 frames on a roll. Nowadays these kids have just got it too easy. Shoot a thousand pictures on one card. If the light is bad, just switch your ISO to 3200. No crossing fingers, just take the shot and look at the screen and see if you got the shot. And if that's not enough, you can always fix everything in Photoshop. Now I feel old.

BTW, FBJ, as a pilot, how would you like to fly that 747 with the space shuttle on it's back? That must be something.

Man I'm horrible at post-production. Are most of you self taught on PhotoShop and LightRoom?

I never really alter my pics in PS or LR. I've experimented a bit, but my opinion is if you alter the pic much it goes from photography to graphic design. Plus I also think if you need to touch it up in PS, then you ain't got it. That said, there are cool things you can do aside from just simple cropping and adjusting. Maybe someday I'll figure out how to do those things.

Just came back from a trip to Ireland.
