I never really alter my pics in PS or LR. I've experimented a bit, but my opinion is if you alter the pic much it goes from photography to graphic design. Plus I also think if you need to touch it up in PS, then you ain't got it. That said, there are cool things you can do aside from just simple cropping and adjusting. Maybe someday I'll figure out how to do those things.

Just came back from a trip to Ireland.

With either of those programs you could get all the intricate detail of those stone objects without having to blow the blue sky out. If you don't want to "cheat" a strong flash and a polarizer can do the same thing in camera. This might even make a good multi-exposure HDR.

Well, haven't had much time to go through my photos from Mono Lake and the area around it but here's one that came out nice (I thought). For some reason though, the colors are off on the upload. It's less purpley and more blue sky and the clouds actually have more orange in there. Not sure why that happens but I seem to see it on occasion.

I'll post some more as I get a chance to go through them some more.

This is most likely due to color management. What color space are you saving out at? Anything other than sRGB and chances are it will render incorrectly in your browser.

The issue is this, for 8 bit spaces, each channel can contain a value of 0 through 255. So if for a given pixel the red channel is 255, and the green and blue channels are 0, that pixel is red. No problem so far. The question is, how red is that red? 255,0,0 in sRGB is a different red that 255,0,0 in Adobe RGB. The sRGB gamut is pretty small, it was designed do that the vast majority of monitors and printers could reliably reproduce the whole range of colors in the sRGB gamut. So sRGB's pure red, 255,0,0, is not as red as say Adobe RGB's red. There are more colors in the Adobe RGB color space, so the most red you can have in sRGB space (255,0,0) is mapped to 245,0,0 in Adobe RGB space, leaving room for more red reds.

In color managed images, they carry a little tag which tells a color managed application which color space it use to render the image. If you were working in something like Lightroom or Photoshop, their default behavior is to work in a color space which is not sRGB. If you export out of a color managed application without setting the output to sRGB, you will see it render incorrectly in a non color managed application (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.), while looking OK in a color managed app.

Couldn't find the resource that I wanted about color management, but this one isn't bad:

That's an excellent explanation that you gave there. I'm like 100% sure that's what is happening. You learn something new every day. I'll have to check on that. I guess that if I'm working in LR and want to post it somewhere that I just have to accept that or is there a way to get it working appropriately?

I have a question, I don't know much about DSLRs, but my wife has a simple Canon Rebel T3 and she would like a lens that zooms further than the lens the camera comes with.

Is the Cannon 75-300 a good buy? How much more would it zoom?

Amazon.com: Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras: CANON: Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-75-300mm-4-5-6-Telephoto-Cameras/dp/B00004THCZ/ref=pd_cp_p_0)

The usual kit lens (the one that would have come with the camera) would be the EF-S 18-55mm. If this is the case, the 75-300 is a great deal longer. Here is a site that has a little tool that lets you slide though zoom ranges to get an idea of what the look like: Focal length comparison tool, Tamron USA (http://www.tamron-usa.com/lenses/learning_center/tools/focal-length-comparison.php)

As for if it is a good buy, is she is happy with the quality of the kit lens, the build of the 75-300 is about the same.

Had to take some pics of my house for a listing, so I wanted very natural looking HDRs so windows / sky wouldn't be blown, but I could still see in shadows. I have never really been a fan of HDR software, but then starting looking into doing it in Lightroom. Turns out, if you also have Photoshop, it is pretty kick ass. I was amazed at how natural they looked, and still retained contrast to make an interesting image. Highly, highly recommend this combo if you need HDRs that don't jump out and punch you in the face:

Hey guys, looking for a little advice from the crew.

I'm wanting to diversify a little and get more well rounded and into taking portrait type photos for people. I've lined up a few friends to let me practice on them and learn what to do, but I wanted to ask you guys if you've had any trial and error tips for me. Focal ranges, styles, settings, etc. Just some things that could help me not keep missing and getting them right from the start. I mean, I know a lot of it is trial and error, but just some general guidelines or things to look out for would be great. At the moment I'm trying to find my footing so, any and all tips are welcome.

We're staying in Burbank, just looking for a little bit more room and, well, to avoid your friendly 7:00am wake-up calls (although I am grateful that I can discern between a 737-700 and 300, mostly by sound, however I don't yet have the 800s down yet ;) )

As for the portraits, the "standard" setup is usually 85-135mm on a full frame camera. For lighting, a very common recipe is short side lighting (especially for female subjects as it can be a slimming trick). If you have a model who is standing square to camera, then you rotate them a bit, the side of the model that is away from camera is the short side (because the nose is making the side of the face away from camera appear shorter than the broad side, which is the side of the model now facing camera). So you place your key light on that side of the model: Broad and Short Lighting in Portrait Photography - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYUYTizW6Ag) So, key on short side, fill on the other, sometimes a hair light to separate them from the background.

This of course is all just the plain pasta with red sauce recipe. The real trick is finding what you like and what you find interesting. I think that even before you get to your models, doing the same thing on a doll can be helpful, because then you can shoot thousands of frames and the doll could care less. People tend to get board, but do make for much more interesting photos. If you are going to keep them for a while, might not be a bad idea to have wine or other things to keep them jovial.

The other tip I would add is, start with one light, make sure you know what it is doing and it is pleasing before you add another. When you add another, turn of your first light until you see exactly what your second light is doing. When you have it looking the way you want, turn the first light back on, see how they look together. I think adding light very slowly in this manner makes it a bit easier to understand what each one is doing. Play with diffusers, distance between light and subject to see what it does, and of course angle and power.

Good luck with it. Post what you take :) Have fun.

Glad to hear you're staying local, Sam. You don't have to worry about figuring out which of our 737's are -800s, because you won't ever see one in regularly scheduled service through Burbank. They're too long for the parking spaces!

Taxiway Alpha: Imperial Hill (http://taxiwayalpha.blogspot.com/2008/04/imperial-hill.html)

Seriously, though...I've wanted to take a late, late evening/early morning photo trip downtown lately...primarily to try and capture some interesting night architecturals. The problem is that I don't care to do it solo due to the potential for having all my gear stolen at gunpoint. A big group of us could have a fine time, though.

Yeah, I'm not sure there's any bigger danger of having your gear stolen there than on any city street. Any time I've been down there shooting, I see multiple people on every street doing the same.

Which one did you get?? I have been looking at the G12 or G15. B&H has deals on both right now. I had the opportunity to use the G1x recently and was not that impressed. It has very poor macro ability (because of the larger sensor) and it seemed slow. Th new G15 is supposed to be faster focusing and smaller.

Great post VF. You can get instruction on just about anything these days on YouTube. A friend of mine who does commercial work uses that set up a lot but with a reflector on the opposite (dark) side for a little fill. He comes up with some dramatic looking stuff. I tried a 3-light set up recently just for some family portraits. With the D800 I have been obsessed with detail and sharpness. The lesson I learned is that detail is not always a good thing with portraits--every skin blemish and imperfetion my kids have showed up crisp and clear. Plus with the aperature I was using, I had too much depth of field. The background needed to be much softer. Oh well. That's why we practice these things (and post process in Photoshop!).

I think the G1x was a step outside the regular G series line--not a true replacement for the G12. It was a response to the mirrorless camera craze and the push toward larger sensors. It has great image quality, but it doesn't do some of the stuff the the G's were known for. It's bigger and it can't focus close. Now with the G15 they have moved in a different direction. It's more of a G12 replacement, however the fold-out LCD screen is gone in order to slim it to a more pocket-friendly size. They also dumped the handy ISO wheel. It's funny, how whenever a new camera comes out it's a give and take. They make improvements, but then take away some good features too.

Sorry if this has been asked a million times before. I couldn't find anything more recent than this post in 2008 (http://letsgokings.com/f15/recommend_good_telephoto_lens_shooting_hockey-84264.html#post1245884) regarding bringing DSLRs to Staples. The official policy seems to be different now. It states "no flash/professional photography, tripods or monopods". My body and lenses are hardly professional, and I could swear I saw people with DSLRs during the playoffs last year.

Has the policy changed since that post? Are we allowed to bring them? Are there still lens restrictions?

Thanks.

Has the policy changed since that post? Are we allowed to bring them? Are there still lens restrictions?

Thanks.

From what I understand, the policy hasn't changed...but it can depend on who you get at the door when you go in. I've had no problems bringing my camera in at any time. I'd suggest the smallest zoom lens you can put on the camera though. Shorter than a credit card if you can. Also, suggestion to drape it over your arm instead of carrying it in a camera bag as that seems to look more casual. Also doesn't seem like you're hiding anything. The folks have never hassled me about anything with my camera when I've done it that way.

Thanks, guys. I only have a Canon 17-85 (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-17-85mm-f-4-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx) right now. Detached from the body it's longer than a credit card. Attached, it's the same length. Think that would pass if it was strung over my shoulder? Sadly, it's my only option. My 50mm broke not too long ago and I can't afford to buy another lens now.

I would think you'll be fine. I usually bring in my 18-250mm and it's a little longer than a credit card as well. Have a smile on your face and be friendly and that will get you further than anything else.

It now appears that Staples Center has changed its camera policy. In the past it said you could bring cameras with interchangeable lenses as long at the lens was less than 3.5 inches. Now it says NO cameras with interchangeable lenses. Lets see what happens Saturday and share experiences here.

Lateley I have been taking a newer high-end point and shoot. It does a pretty good job while looking non-professional. I wonder how they classify the new mirrorless cameras? They are not DSLRs but have interchangeable lenses.

How are they going to know they have interchangeable lenses? They look like a largish compact.

Mostly I took my wife's Nikon P7100. That's was our concert camera last year. It's nothing special, but it gives you manual control for tough lighting situations, has reasonable low light capability and good battery life. It's not a DSLR but I like it for concerts and hockey games--easy to carry, good pics and no hassels with security. I would love to take game shots down on the glass sometime, but you need a pass for that anyway (or really expensive seats!). Mostly I'm taking shots of family and friends at the game, or just the overall atmosphere and it works fine for that.

The new mirrorless cameras do look a lot like compacts, but some can take really great pictures and video. The Sony NX series is especially impressive. I think you'll probably be able to get those through the door with no problems.

So, a couple pages back I mentioned that I wanted to start doing some portrait stuff. Still starting out, but I've gotten a couple shoots done through word of mouth of friends and all that. Figured I'd post and share some after the advice you guys have given me over the years. Feel free to give me feedback and suggestions. I have some in my head already and I'd like to see if it matches up with what you think. The people I did them for love them, but I want to keep getting better.

Anybody have any recommendations for a home lighting kit? I need to photograph some artwork. Definitely not looking to break the bank. Strobes seem to be the more popular choice but I don't see why I couldn't use a continuous lighting kit.

I've tried that and just can't seem to get the results I want. End up having to adjust colors and such. I think I just need a consistent set up that I have a little more control over.

You do take a lot of great photos though, so maybe I'll play around with it a little bit more.

She led the pack the entire second race. Fearless!!! Love it!!!

By the way, these are all at ISO 5000, 200mm, f4, and about 1/125th. The D3 may be five years old now, but it ain't no slouch. In fact, I can't think of a reason to replace it since nothing else is really leaps-and-bounds ahead of it, rather only small incremental sensor improvements and feature additions that I don't need.

Silly Question about Fickr.

So a few years ago I had flicker Pro but didn't renew and was just gonna do it again at some point but now it's free storage is so much larger I don't need to do it. I think it's showing all of my files but not 100% sure. Does anyone here know for if it just reopened the storage I was using and all of my files are there from the Pro account?

Found this article and thought some of you might enjoy it as much as I did. Seems like it would be a fun project to do, but obviously it's not within everyone's budget.

I know some time ago people were toying with the idea of doing Photo "Assignments" in this thread. Whatever happened with that idea?

We did a bunch of photo challenges (what, five years ago??) where we had a month of a certain theme or key component. The first two ran well, but interest waned for the last couple.

I just don't have time these days to run that sort of thing, but it might be nice to participate again!!

I'd be happy to start one up. Maybe do it every two months to spark ideas and discussions? I've learned a lot from you guys over the years and I know I could use more tips. I'd think of them less as contests and more like themes that we can group think about and come up with new ideas and teach.

If you guys want to give some advice on how to "run" it, I'd be all ears.

The contests were cool it was just hard finding time to get out there and do it. Of course part of it was getting us off our behinds and out shooting pics. I failed miserably at that part. A few times I had a great idea in my head but by the time I got around to photographing it someone else had already thought of it and posted.

I think if we were to go with a theme instead of an object, that might prevent that sort of premature rejectulation. Instead of Santa Monica Pier or whatever, go with Summertime or Solemn. Pitch out some examples and go to work. Not to mention, having two months to do it might give a little more time. We're all working or have families or other obligations so, the more time the better.

They are in desperate need. Holy crap, I feel bad for the guy after hearing that he paid a photographer for the images he put up. Just horrid!!!

I got the contract! BAM!!!

I'll be starting with 70 pieces of silver and coral jewelry around the 8th of November for the initial contract. They have over 500 pieces of other jewelry to shoot after the holidays, so if they like what they get from me, I will continue to image their collection for the remainder of their website.

At a rate of $35/piece imaged, this is a BIG deal for me!!

Anyone have any lighting tips? HAAHAHAH!!!! I've gotta order a CFL soft-box on stand, a 5" CFL reflector spot on a stand, a translucent screen and holder, and a couple sheets of black and white plexiglass. Going to be shooting right here in my living room, I think.

I've seen a lot of guys use museum putty to keep certain parts of the jewelery in the right places and to keep bracelets and whatnot looking round, then just shop it out after. My biggest recommendation is to shoot tethered if you aren't already, helps you see where to adjust lights and make other moves before you've already shot a ton of stuff(and end up having to reshoot it)

My stuff is the black background stuff.

I know this is nothing ground-breaking, as technique goes. But they're happy enough with my work that they want me to shoot every piece they have for their entire site over the next few months, as well as when they have new design arrivals. Also, they work with a marketing company in NY who told them they were very impressed with the way it's turning out. It looks as if my work for them will not only be on their website, but in trade pamphlets and show materials.

This is a GIANT learning process. I'm picking many, many tricks just by trying to streamline the process. It's a ****-ton of work, but I'm having a great time.

Guys,

I've been shooting tethered to my iMac for the past two weeks. Today, when I started working, I couldn't get Lightroom to find the camera. I couldn't get the Mac to find the camera at all. I tried three different USB cables and three different USB ports on the back of the iMac, as well as an attempted attachment to my old PC. Nothing. The iMac and the PC see my old D200 just fine, but not my D3.

I think my USB port on the camera body is FUXXORD.

I am literally dead in the water with deadlines looming.

Any thoughts?

I'm thinking I'll head over the hill to their Wilshire Blvd repair facility tomorrow morning. They open at 0700. Maybe I can get a quick diagnosis...

The Nikon USA repair facility is part museum, part customer service center. The guy behind the counter was very nice and definitely sympathetic to my plight. He ran the camera back to their diagnostic bench and came back with the news about five minutes later. The I/O board that handles the USB, audio, and HDMI connections is shot.

Out of commission 7-10 days and the repair will cost $435. They're "throwing in" a full function check and sensor cleaning as well as free overnight shipping to my house when it's done.

Danged near $100 a day. I can't justify that. The cost of this repair is already eating far enough into the money I'm making from this gig. Fortunately, the client is being very understanding.

Besides, of that 7-10 business days, I'll be spending at least six of it at work where I can't shoot images of jewelry, anyhow.

Nikon called earlier and told me my camera was ready!! YEEHAW!!! I went and picked it up. It's SUPER CLEAN. They not only replaced the image control board (the faulty part), but they cleaned and adjusted the autofocus sensor, they cleaned the image sensor, they adjusted the mirror, and they upgraded the firmware to the most recent version. Nicely done in FIVE BUSINESS DAYS (they said 7-10).

Just gotta set the studio back up and start shooting again!!

Sometimes you go back and realize the shot you liked looks like crap. Sometimes it is the other way around. I took this a couple of years ago and just ran across it today. Cropped differently than I had it, I think it ain't bad.

Grumble…

There are several pieces in the ring collection that contain large polished corals, lapis, onyx, malachites, etc. that have significant curvature to them. Consequently they tend to reflect the soft box. The lighting setup is DESIGNED to do this to a certain degree, as it makes the piece look three-dimensional and highly-polished, rather than flat and plastic-looking. With each piece I put down, I fiddle with the position of the light to the extent necessary to make the shine mark on the stone as inconspicuous as possible while still allowing it to play the role it's meant to play. Some of these pieces I've shot a dozen times with the soft box in a different position in each shot in order to minimize the shine mark without totally changing the lighting and making that one piece look totally different than the rest. The interaction between the spot, the plexi, the soft box, and the reflector are pretty intricate, and if I'm not careful, the image just doesn't have the same look as everything else I've put out.

So the client calls me today and tells me the shine mark is unacceptable…that it takes away from the stone and the quality of the image. Yet I can't get rid of it in a way that allows all the images I'm creating to have a uniform look.

Grumble...

My first Nikons were the FE2 and the F3 and both are still on my shelf. They still have a place in my heart. The Df brings that nostalgia for my film days. It really is cool and if I was rich I would probably buy one as a walking around camera. But I'm not and so I have to choose my gear wisely. Last year I bought the D800 for the same money, and while it "looks" like nothing special, it is by far the best camera I have ever owned. It has a lot more to offer as a photographer's tool than the Df for the same price. That said, the Df looks cool and would be a lot of fun to play with.

VF: The so-called faux aperture ring is a misleading criticism. That ring he is talking about is really part of the retro-look special edition 50mm kit lens they created to go with the camera. It's really a modern G series lens in disguise. My understanding is that the Df can use every Nikon lens ever made. So if you are like me and still have some manual focus Ai lenses with aperture rings, they'll work just fine.

FINALLY done with this product shoot!!

I've learned a few things about lighting, staging and styling. But above all, I've learned that I have absolutely no desire to be a product photographer for a living.

A couple positives: They're having a "look book" published with large color images of all their jewelry…sort of like a catalog. Nice. They're also having an article done for a magazine that circulates about 100,000 every quarter in NY City with a few images from my work with them.
I've basically entered into an ongoing partnership with the owners of the jewelry company to shoot any additional images in the same style when they give them to me.

But I'm really glad to have this out from over my head. Now I can get back to doing what I want on my days off from my real career.

I can't say it didn't pay well. I basically shot for the moon when I quoted the original 75 piece trial (it worked out to about $35/piece) and they basically said, "Oh, is that all?? Okay!" Maybe I should have doubled my asking price?

Ah well. Considering each piece took me an average of fifteen minutes of actual imaging and post-processing, then my hourly rate was pretty freakin' good. It just took SO MUCH TIME away from my family, whom I already miss time with being away half the week for the real job.

OK, I have to ask...do you just sneak up on people and take their pictures? Do you ask them first? I know some are obviously friends/family, but many of them seem completely random. I always get caught trying to take candid photos and then feel like a creeper afterwards!

yes!

jk

This shot was a girl from work who wanted a new profile pic, so i suggested she walk with me to the post office and i get a couple pics of her against a brick wall over there. I was just getting shots of her during the walk. I know what you mean about the creeper thing. When I was starting out I would keep telling myself "shoot as if it were your job". The more confident you are when you shoot, the less creeperish you feel. Works for me at least. The times I ask people for a shot are usually when they got a sweet shirt I want a pic of. Not really my style but it's better than chasing someone around for the shot cause that would make me feel super creepy.
