Gracias, yeah the family pics are good. I like the way the lighting turned out for the dinosaur pictures and that was on the full auto mode with the standard pop up flash

Okay here is a pic of some Geraniums I took at my parents and then used iPhoto to edit. Would like to do more, but you can't with iPhoto, and I am not ready to make the jump to Aperture (nor do I have the time to learn it). Also, from what I have heard, Photoshop Elements is not that good for a Mac

Yeah I always use a flash whenever I can. It fills the shadows. The highlights are blown out in this one but I think it adds to the overall look. I agree, the look she is giving is dynamite. It WAS a lot of fun, although my goal is to make things look more fun than they actually are. ;)

Also used a polarizer to saturate the colors. The noon direct overhead sun is brutal so you have to use a few tricks.

See how the flash prevents the harsh shadow from his hat.

Fill flash and good color saturation from the polarizer.

I like it for the most part, but his face is a little dark and the light-colored blanket (or whatever it is behind his head on the back of the couch) and book in the background is the first thing to grab and hold my attention. A tighter crop might take care of that, though.

Glenn for the butterfly images are you using a Macro lens or a standard telephoto? I have been playing around with using the telephoto on the close up setting of my wife's camera hoping to get that effect. (Also I would like to save the 5-600 and not buy a macro lens with a little one around...too much glass)

FBJ

Spuhjon:

I used a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with a 12mm extension tube behind it to decrease its minimum focusing distance.

A set of extension tubes (mine are from Promaster (http://promaster.com/products/products.asp?CatName=Lenses&CatSM=C_Lenses&SubCatName=Extension%20Tubes&Page=SubCat&CatID=230&SubCatID=4&sm=sm2_2304)) are a comparatively inexpensive way to turn any lens into a macro. Check your local camera shop or try any number of online camera supply sites (http://www.samys.com/product_detail.php?item=5281) and you should be able to find a set for around $175. Mount one between the camera body and your lens and you can get right up on top of any subject to fill the frame and still be able to focus.

Just don't do that with poisonous snakes!

Also, those images are crops of the full frame.

Are you talkin' to me?

I don't have a macro lens. I like the way my extension tubes work. The 50mm lens is tack-sharp at f8 with extension tubes behind it, and so is the 24-70mm. No need to spend that kinda dough.

I wouldn't mind having a reversing ring like Puckmonkey talked about during the photo challenges, though.

Speaking of tubes... that's a hell of a scary shot. Nice one.

BTW, a good macro lens doesn't have to cost a fortune. Tamron 90mm/2.8 is superb, and you can find it in great used condition for around $300 or less. The "plastic fantastic" can be had for I think around $150 new, or definitely around $100 used.

So, looking to get into this whole scene. Been messing around for some time with your standard digital camera and I figure it's time to upgrade. No better time than when paycuts and layoffs are going on after all right?

Anyway, I'm looking for some entry level stuff to get started with and I've been seeing a lot (in this thread and others) about the XSi being a good starter. So, looking around and saw this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-EOS-Digital-REBEL-XSi-450D-Camera-4-LENS-8GB-NEW_W0QQitemZ120436333928QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDigita l_Cameras?hash=item1c0a909d68&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1234%7C 293%3A1%7C294%3A50) on ebay and I wanted to see if you guys thought it was a good deal for a "starter package". Any feedback or suggestions would be welcome.

I know very little about Nikon, but I would guess that while two of the lenses are OK, the rest of the stuff is utter crap and/or crap you don't need. As someone new to DSLR's, keep this in mind: lenses are a FAR more important part of the photography equation than the camera body. There's no point in getting a good body without good lenses, you might as well stay with a point and shoot. The body may last you a couple of years, good glass may last a couple of decades - or more.

Food for thought...

Appreciate the link. I'm not a slave to any brand really. I've used Canon's all my life, but that's just because there are so many and they're the most popular. I've heard great things about the Nikon's as well.

Having said that, a couple other questions.

1. What is the better technology giving me in that camera? Or, in the alternative, where is a solid review/information page that I can read up on for myself?
2. This would be an even better deal (http://cgi.ebay.com/Nikon-D5000-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body-5-Lens-Kit-NEW_W0QQitemZ110414871468QQcmdZViewItemQQptZDigita l_Cameras?hash=item19b53d3bac&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1234|293%3A1| 294%3A50) on the same camera/lenses then yes? Digital Cameras Side-by-Side, 2 cameras: Digital Photography Review (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos450d%2Cnikon_d5000&show=all)

that being said... the D5000 is packed with a few more features, such as the HD video, and the swivel screen. I'd go that route, just for that, (besides the fact that I shoot with Nikon....).

Also, +1 on the 18-55 lens included in the kit. That lens is money.

Oh... and the Nikon is a year newer... so that is why it has more features.

I read the review for the D5000 in the American Photo Mag. I have a subscription to both Pop and AP. The July/August issue that I'm talking about is on the stands now. Go grab a copy. It has a "Best of the Best" review in it from P&S's to High end Pro set ups.

What lens set you buy is pretty much up to what type of photography you want to do. I prefer having a set of lenses that go from 17mm to 400mm. That requires me to have 5 lenses. Then you get into specific task lenses like Macro's, Micro's, fisheyes, and Supertelephotos. If you do mostly landscape and portrait photos, keep in the mid focal lengths like that 18-55mm. If you do mid distance shooting, like a bird 40' from you, the 55-200. Its all personal preference.

Like I mentioned, both these specific lenses listed at that auction are PHENOMINAL lenses for the price.

edit: The first few sets of pics I posted on the first couple of pages of this thread are with that same 18-55mm.

Also it might not be a bad idea to actually lay your hands on the brands that you are looking at. Quite literally, absolutely everything on a Canon is the reverse on the Nikon and vise versa, aperture and shutter speed controls are in the opposite spots, zooms twist the opposite way, lenses mount with opposite twists. So holding them you might find one just feels better.

As for the "nice-ities," I think Nikon is leading the field. They have some really nice little things, such as grid lines projecting in the viewfinder on demand. They also offer a pro level auto focus in many of their non pro bodies. Currently, Canon doesn't have a full frame camera with pro auto focus for less then $8000, which is highly annoying. The flash system on Nikon is also a LOT better. Fake Chuck Westfall (http://fakechuckwestfall.wordpress.com/) (the real Chuck WestFall is the Technical Information Advisory for Canon) is a humorous read on the less than stellar happenings at Canon

With that said though, the lens thing is very true. If you see lenses in one manufacturer's lineup that are absent in the others, that should be a consideration. I know many won't agree with me, and it is highly subjective so my opinion may mean nothing, but I find there are few in the Canon lineup that don't have competition (the 135mm f/2.0L, the 85mm f/1.2L II, and the ef 35mm f/1.4 are all just stunning) Not to say Nikon doesn't have very, very drool worthy lenses (Nikkor 14-24 comes to mind, Canon doesn't really have a zoom that can touch it)

It he's aware of what he's getting in that package, and that's what he's looking for, great. But as a DSLR newbie, SK may or may not know what he is actually looking for, or should be looking for. Some of what he is paying for in that kit is likely to be virtually unusable, such as those two other lenses. The kit is back down to $962, by the way.

BTW, the 2 lenses are more than "OK". They're killer.

Again, I know nothing about these particular lenses, but I can make a reasonable guess as to the overall quality of a zoom lens costing well under $200. I assume you mean good value for the price; I have no reason to doubt you on that.

Appreciate all the advice. As far as the lenses go, yeah. I've heard the same thing so I was taking it all with that in mind.

Basically looking for something to get my foot in the door really. One, budget doesn't permit me to go out and get half a dozen lenses for a couple grand. Two, I'm still a little unfamiliar with all the bells and whistles that a DSLR is going to provide me with.

I'd like something that will do well until I get the idea of what I'm doing (and looking to do). After I get a feel for that, I'll start looking to get more of a variety in a lens to accomplish all of that. So, a kit (even one with stuff that is useless basically) that has some lenses and a case and some accessories is a good start for me. Especially if those two "main" lenses are going to give me a little different exposure to different ways of taking photos. I'll upgrade later as I grow into it.

Having said all of that, I'm leaning towards the Nikon now after having checked them both out at a local camera store. The counter guy also suggested the Nikon. . .for what it's worth. Disclaimer: This is after I told him I'd be purchasing elsewhere.

So, I buckled down and got the Nikon. I ended up getting it with the three lenses below to start.

Amazon.com: Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo

Amazon.com: Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens: Camera & Photo (came with it)

Amazon.com: Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens (Black): Camera & Photo

Got a decent deal on it I guess. A little over $850 for everything.

To answer the (sorta) question about what I like to photograph, it's mostly been structures and landscapes. I'd like to get a little into portraits and sports too. Like I said earlier, I need to figure out all the stuff on the camera and go from there. Here's some stuff I've taken just on my little Canon point and shoot.

Congrats on (correctly ;) ) choosing a Nikon product! Which model?

Next thing I'd suggest you pick up is a copy of Adobe Lightroom. Then, shoot in RAW and have a blast!

I would suggest you immediately pick up a decent set of "clear protection" or "digital clear protection" filters to protect the glass on the lenses. This is probably the most important item you can buy after the main purchase. Put them on as soon as you open the lens boxes up.

Also, after shooting landscapes for a bit, pick up a Polarizing and Neutral Density filter...remember you get what you pay for with effect filters. I use Hoya or Heliopan.

Congrads and look forward to seeing your work.

This is one of the shows I set up remote lighting for, in fact it might have been the first one, which shows how easy it is to get it right.

Yea, I like the lens also, but to be honest, it doesn't give me the "umph" i look for on landscapes, which is what I originally bought it for. Those cars were the first time I've gotten results I liked from it. For example, from a recent trip to Mexico, I took some pictures at the ruins at Tulum, which overlook the beach & ocean from a cliff. This should be ideal for wide angle IMO, but most of the shots looked like this:

10mm f/4.5

The only one I got that I like and thought was effective at wide angle (13mm f/4.5) was this one:

If you didn't have one already on, which it looks like you didn't, try a polarizing filter. The blues, greens, and grays seem to be washed out a bit from the sun especially in the first shot. That sun is in a tough place in shot 1.

The composition looks fine to me.

Yeah. That's a five-shot HDR. The D3 makes it really easy to shoot RAW for HDR conversion. Since it can give me nine frames per second in Continuous High mode, I can shoot them hand-held (as that one was) if I've got enough light.

I don't do much HDR stuff anymore. I think it was sort of a phase I was going through (along with everyone else here at the time).

Yippeekayaay mini sirloin burgers!!

I like this shot a lot. The shallow DOF and the shiny countertop are what do it for me. But it might be a wee bit harsh on the highlights, I think. Maybe taking Lightroom and dialing back the exposure 1/3 of a stop or so and checking your highlight recovery to take the wicked bright spot off that right-hand burger's top bun and the onion underneath the front burger would make this one into a total winner?

I'm in the market for a flash. I will be going on my honeymoon in about 3 months and would like something practical to use on the trip. We plan on taking a cruise, so I imagine I would be taking quite a few indoor shots and some outdoor shots while in Mexico.

I own a Canon Digital Rebel Xsi. I am by no means, a "professional." Just an amateur photographer who is looking to get better. Right now I am tossing between two flashes. Keep in mind that I am looking to spend as little as possible...but don't want to be cheap just for a short term solution. The two I have been looking at are:

Canon Speedlite 430EX II

and

Canon Speedlite 270EX

Also, what exactly does a hood for your lens do? Does it block out the harsh rays during mid-day? Do they make a hood for the Canon Xsi kit lens or the Canon 55-250 telephoto lens?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or comment.

I have the 430 EX II and it works great and gives great light. I use it even if it's bright sun to fill in the shadows (see pool party shots). Look at any of my shots and you will se it's effect. I use the little piece of tupperware as a diffuser to spread the light and make the shadows not so harsh. It makes a huge difference, I don't remember the last time I saw red eye on my pics. I use rechargable batteries and rarely have to switch to back up baterries. With a quality flash like this you can go nearly anywhere and get great pics.

The lens hood prevents stray light from getting into the lens and is worth getting and using. The only time I don't use this $50 piece of plastic over the lens is when I'm shooting hockey.

Both of these items are VITAL pieces to the puzzle that will make your pics better than the next guy's, it's all about the little things.

Yes, you can do it with a cheap cord right from the sync jack or a more expensive coil cord from the base (that will preserve auto exposure) or use a remote radio device like a Pocket Wizard (more expensive).

They probably wouldn't let me in with it, though.

And a fixed f/8 means I'd have to shoot ISO2000 to get anything half-way decent indoors.

Fact is, this is a bright daylight lens. That's what I bought it for.

Come to think of it, you might want to take it to Huntington Beach Pier. You can shoot the surfers from the Pier and get some excellent shots from there, near the lifeguard tower right on the pier. I'll bet you could get some cool stuiff with that lens at dawn or dusk. Id suggest dusk and shooting off the right side of the pier toward the sunset.

I'm tempted to clamp a remote flash onto the railing of the pier for some nice fill lighting on the opposite side of their faces as the sunset. They are that close that you could probably pull it off.

A dismal attempt at catching the Perseid shower (there are two visible). I set the exposure for what I thought it would be at around 10:00pm, set the camera up at 8:00, 30 sec exposure with the shutter locked down. Unfortunately the camera ran out of battery at 9:30. When I look through the single shots though I think I caught a few satellites (to dim to show up in the composite)

Overcoming camera-shake blur is a challenge, primarily because of the single stop (f/8). On the D3, it isn't a big deal, but to get a decent shutter speed when properly exposed, I found I was having to shoot at least ISO 500 in bright daylight. ISO 1000 gave me the sharpest images with it, since the shutter speeds were in the 1/2000th range with that setting.

Lots of people bitch about this lens's lack of contrast and soft-focus. I say that's crap (click here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/glenn_calvin/sets/72157621939952723/) if you want to look at full-sized images to get an idea of how sharp it can be). It's a non CPU lens, so you have to simply be careful about the exposures you use in Manual mode. It's definitely a bright daylight lens or high ISO lens, though...especially when hand-held. Put it on a tripod, and it still suffers from a bit of camera-shake blur because it's just flat-out too light. I found that adding a little weight to the tripod helped a lot.

The ring-shaped bokeh is either a bonus or a problem, depending upon who you are and what you're shooting. Personally, I think it adds an interesting feel to the backgrounds of these images.

All in all, though, I think this will be a nice little addition to my bag of tricks. It's very light and very small compared to even my 70-200mm f/2.8 (it's about the same size as my 24-70 and about half its weight).

Fun stuff.

Hey RR, what lens are you using on this shot as well as speeds and ap setting?

It's the 17-55 and i get it as close as I can to the feeder and focus a few inches away to get them just as they are buzzing around checking things out. ISO 200 at 250th/sec exp (fastest sync speed on a Canon) at 2.8. The fun usually begins aroiund 6 PM when they get hungry enough to challenge the keeper of the feeder who is vigilent on defending the food. I set the vivitar flash at lowest power about 5 ft away from the shot and throw an orange gel on there sometimes to warm it up a bit. Look at his eye and you can see my flash. (I flipped the one above by 90 degrees so my flash is coming from the top when it actually was from the side but it works well. the hard side lighting brings out the texture of the feathers) There's a white piece of cardboard to reflect the light back and light the other side just a touch.

I have dozens of pics where he is peeking in the side of the frame, he seems to never be centered so I have to crop creatively without leaving too much grain. These pics are very popular on Flickr but not a lot of use for anything else. THey are pretty fun to do because it's kind of like fishing, you sit around waiting for them to get hungry and then there is about 30 sec of clicking and then another 1/2 to 1 hr of waiting.

The camera gets his attention so he will buzz right up to it and check it out as it clicks away. I can't tell you how many shots I have that are out of focus or empty with a wing or whatever in them but if you can get two or three that are just right it makes it all worthwhile. It's tempting to zoom out and get more area but then when you crop it can be too grainy. If I had a pro camera with better resolution I could crop smaller regions (I see the pros do it with hockey shots and it amazes me how small of a portion they can use and still have it be fine).

Okay... time for some advice.... for me that is.

What is the best way to deal with a workflow? Any software ideas? Tips, tricks? Something for dealing with large volumes of shots that I want to process a little quicker... Any way to get from RAW format to jpeg, with the corrections in between faster?

I have a copy of lightroom somewhere but have NO idea how to use it to process.

B,

You don't go from a fresh install of Lightroom to an efficient workflow overnight. It takes a couple days of using the software to get things down.

Install it, first.

And here are my tips:

Cull the rejects. Get rid of the images you know are horrible. Only work on the best 50% or so.

Group the pictures into similar exposure and white balance settings, then make those corrections in bulk by copying and pasting the settings from the first photo you work on to the remainder in the group. You can add sharpening and noise reduction to this step, as most will be about the same if you've shot the same ISO.

Go back through and fine-tune, then export to jpeg.

I've got a more detailed workflow that I wrote up for rinkrat when he first started using lightroom. I'll dig it out and send it to you.

Static airplanes are MUCH harder to take good pictures of than they'd seem...especially indoor ones because of poor lighting and being surrounded by LOTS of things that will end up distracting the viewer from the intended subject. My suggestion for next time would be to maybe forget trying to get the whole bird and go for interesting detail, close-up style.

Like so.

It still says, "I'm an airplane," and can even be identified by the savvy enthusiast, but the extraneous BS in the background (that hangar was CLUTTERED) is left out.

I've been meaning to get out to POF Chino and take a look around. I haven't been there in AGES. Another GREAT one (if you want to drive the extra hour) is the Palm Springs Air Museum on the East end of the Palm Springs Airport.

That's a good idea. I did some that were more "area specific" on the plane, but I was meh about them. I think the biggest problem for me was being there when the place had opened. They were getting ready it seemed like so the hangars were sort of opened, sort of closed so the sunlight was everywhere. Not to mention that the roped off areas made it somewhat difficult to get a decent angle sometimes.

I'll take all that in to consideration for the next time I head out to a hangar. My first time shooting subjects rather than landscapes too so it's a little bit of a transition for me.

Yeah I got the first three songs in the photo pit. Festivals are cool because you can shoot about a dozen bands in a day. They said "No Flash" but the lighting was brutal so I snuck a few in, then a few more, and when nobody said anything I just flashed my brains out. The security was too busy with the crowd surfers to worry about a flash in the daytime.

Personally, I would be a little wary of superzooms. You have to give up something somewhere as there are no free lunches, and 18-250mm is a huge range to cover. It is a bit of a slow lens on the long end, but depending on what you are after that might not be a bad thing. If it were me, I might look at which end of that zoom I am most interested in and focus on lenses that might deliver that portion at a similar price but better quality. All that said, I have never seen images from it, so it might be the best thing since sliced bread, and I am more of a prime lens guy so I'm the last one you want advice from ;)

I would go for it but it's only a jump from 15 to 18mp. I'd rather get a used 5DmkII and get 24 mp (and full frame) I think if I was to do anything. I'm trying to control myself right now although 24 mp would be sweet.

Don't you lose some frames per second with the 5DmkII? Not a good thing if you're shooting sports or other fast-moving stuff, I'd think.

And the autofocus on the 5DmkII is the exact same as it is one the 5D, which is to say only 1 cross type sensor right in the middle, the others I don't trust at all. The 7D has a totally new AF, with some really nice features which Canon has been lacking for a long, long time. I am sure will be what the 1D(s) MkIVs will have but they want to make sure they get it right before putting it in an $8k camera.

Here are a handful of shots that I got today at the North American Reptile Breeder's Conference and Trade Show in Anaheim.

I'm not a breeder, or even an owner. Just figured that the 4-year old would get a kick out of having extreme reptile overload. There were about a billion snakes, lizards, spiders, frogs, bugs, and other multi-legged creatures.

My wife has decided that we're buying a Bearded Dragon, and some variety of corn snake. Maybe we shouldn't have gone. Each one of those will need a habitat, and food, and lights, and a heater, and, and, and.

Anyhow, these were shot with available light, and most at f5.6 and 800 ISO if I recall. The lizards were in tubs with more light available, the snakes were through glass. (I did a bit of Photoshop cleanup on dust and particulates for those.) And all of the shots were tweaked from the RAW to fix white balance, contrast and for purely aesthetic reasons.

Mr. Zampelli,
My name is Bill Barber and I am a a Reservist in the U.S. Navy. I was recently selected to be promoted to Chief Petty Officer. Part of the process of being promoted is to build a box to hold a special book. My box is part of a set of 10 - the other 9 being those going through the process with me. We are trying to select a picture to adorn the back of our boxes that can only be seen when all 10 boxes are together and lined up.

Your image on your site of the Lone Sailor was chosen amongst us for this purpose. We are unable to purchase the size of picture needed to cover all the boxes. We have access to a plotter that will print a picture for us that is large enough to fit. For this, we would need a high-res digital version of the photo.

We hope you would be able to allow us to use the photo in this manner. We understand Intellectual Property rights etc. and would have no problem giving you credit for this wonderful piece of art you created. This photo is not nor every will be used by us for commercial purposes.

Please let me know if this is possible.

Regards,
Bill Barber

So I've been thinking of upgrading to a pro camera from the 50d.

I looked at the 5D Mark II which is 21 mpx and full frame but it is billed as a portrait camera and has issues such as slow frames per second and some focussing problems with fast moving objects. The only other alternative that is above 10 mpx is the $6,000 camera. something Mark III which is out of my league. Just can't spend that much for something that will be out of date in two years like every other camera.

The 7D came out this week but it's just a slight upgrade from 15 mpx to 18 mpx and I'm not sure it would even be much of an improvement.

I guess I'll have to sit and wait for a mid-ranged and fast camera for sports/action shooting. Am I missing something here?

Yes. You are.

http://nikonusa.com/Assets/Digital-SLR/25444-Nikon-D700/Views/353_25444_D700_front.jpg

Full frame, 12.1mpx, low noise to 6400 ISO, 5fps (8fps with the battery grip), etc. All at $2700 suggested.

Your Canon stuff should sell pretty well on eBay. ;)

Seriously, though. Sports photogs are switching in droves to Nikon's full-frame cameras. There's gotta be a reason!

I know its probably not cost-effective to completely re-kit, of course.

So why not the Canon EOS 1D Mark III? 10.1 mpx and 10 fps for about $4000?

Canon EOS 1D Mark III sounds great but going down in mpx to 10 is scary.

I'd like to be able to crop pics without seeing grain.

Also, with the crop-frame my 70-200 is a little too long for hockey shots and I think without the 1.6 factor it would be perfect.

I might have to wait for the Mark IV.

Yeah I guess I'll sit tight with the 50D for now.

My 30D is still taking great pics too (most of the super wide shots at the games) like this one

I think you would be fine with a 1dmkIII (better than fine, they are awesome cameras). The pixels are close to twice as large as the 50D, so there is going to be less noise, and 10mp isn't shabby at all, and the intangible picture quality is fantastic. It is a 1.3x crop, so I don't know if that works with the length of your 70-200 or not. Rent it, see if you like it. Be forewarned, once you pick up a 1D series, it is hard to shoot on your other bodies.

As for the mkIV, look for a possible announcement end of January (after the Olympics where supposedly it is being tested), which would mean another half a year or so before you can get your hands on one.

Saw that. Some good software upgrades, but it looks as if the primary hardware difference is the size of the memory buffer (an upgrade to which is available for the standard D3).

The sensor cleaning function is a plus, though. That and the movie mode (though I'm not sure I'd use the movie mode much).

For just $200 more than the standard D3, I imagine that's a jump most people who go to a shop to buy the D3 will make. Because of that, I'll be looking to find the standard D3 discontinued shortly.

Nice! Love the ultra soft lighting.

Thanks! It was a real quick and dirty (trying to get it done during nap time). Lighting was strip boxes (10" x 3' soft box) pretty much straight left and right, low angle, with about a 2:1 ratio. I actually started with the thought that I wanted really hard lighting (like 20 degree grids) to accentuate all the little details, but was having a hard time getting decent fill, so I said "f it" and went with the rather unimaginative soft box route, which works but isn't fantastically interesting.

I like the colors and styles it brings to the table, but I also feel like I'm "cheating" a bit because it can make an ordinary photo look better than it should because of the wow factor. Having said that, I still like to play around with it and use it. Makes for unique imagery.

Is HDR dead?

Like most things, it's a tool. And the more tools you have, the more options you have. More options, more opportunities at creating a great image.

The Luddites who piss and whine about digital enhancement are just as clueless as those that think anything shot in HDR equals superior imagery. The process is only interesting if the image is compelling, and if it is something that can be achieved with a Photoshop filter, than it won't be compelling for very long. The most important filter that should be applied to an image is the filter in your head. After that, who gives a **** how it was achieved.

According to Laforet, forget shooting anything producing good results hand-held. He used $20K worth of equipment for the movie (not counting the camera). Problems:

1 - focus control - extremely hard to control/set/change in a way that looks natural. There are third party modules that will do that, but they cost big bucks (from $5K to $20K)
2 - camera motion control - vibration/movement smoothing and reduction. You need to use shoulder mounts, jibs (cranes), dollies, rails, steady-cam, gyro's, etc.

3 - accessories - monitors for video output, HDMI to SDI interface converters, dedicated microphones with a separate sound recording equipment , audio/video timing synch units, and ton of other stuff.

That is really true for any motion picture camera system. The Canon 1D mkIV, Nikon D3s, Red One, Arri Arricam, Panavision Millennium. I wouldn't call them "problems," I would call them "realities." People like looking at a stable picture that is in focus.

I'm of the same line of thinking. I don't see a need, personally, for a vid cam as part of my still camera.

SOOOO...

:P

That being said, I am thinking very very (very) hard about a new body. I've been doing a little side-work and requests for bigger things requiring more time-commitment (and more moola) are starting to trickle in, so my wife and I are talking about formally launching an event photog and portraiture biz (it's either that or start flipping houses...and honestly, I'd rather take pictures). If we decide to dive into this together, I'll need a second pro-level camera body. Because of its high-resolution, a new D3x may end up becoming my primary camera body for that purpose, backed-up by the "old" D3. I've also been thinking very hard about the 85mm f/1.4 and the 105 f/2 with defocus control for portrait lenses. The only other thing I'll need is a real lighting setup and some PocketWizards.

It's still sort of up in the air right now, and if we decide to do it, the investment won't occur until after the first of the year, as that's when we'll be able to do it without using credit. Not looking to fill up every weekend with photog jobs, but this would be something wife and I could do together to earn a little extra coin.

If thats the case, let me know if you're willing to part with your D200 body for a good price.... I'll take it off your hands...

Probably won't be losing the -200. Wife likes using it, and it's a good light body.

And wow...I can't believe used D200s are still pulling in $700+!!

I just saw this on Adorama, too:

Nikon USA-refurbished D3 for about $700 less than a new one!?!? Wow...

Tamron 90mm/f2.8 macro. I was thinking about selling it, since I rarely use it, but the ability to take shots like that with minimal effort make me rethink it. I posted a couple more on the LGK Flickr stream.

Dude, those are SICK. I love the first one. Composition is very dramatic...happy, yet lonely. The high contrast is nice, and this is an example where sharpness throughout the entire frame is really something useful. One vertical line (the lamp post), but nothing perpendicular to it adds another characteristic of interestingness. The vignette is also a nice touch (post-prod?). I really really like that one.

The full-color sign is just a tad too green to me. If that was the effect you were after, alrighty then.

Nice work, bro! I thought you were looking for a D200? Looks to me like you've got one already!

Man, oh, man...

I've been looking through a set of about 500 images I took of one of my best buddy's wedding five years back. When he found out he was getting deployed to Germany, they put the wedding together in a span of about two weeks and had to do it on-the-cheap. Since I'd just bought my D100, they asked me to photograph it for them. I did the absolute best I could back then, but all I could think of while sifting through all the technically horrific images was, "Man, I wish I'd been a better photographer for them."

So I selected about a dozen of the best images and ran them through Lightroom (fortunately, I had them in .tiff format rather than plain old jpeg). I really turned some icky pictures into some rather keepsake-quality photographs!

I've been itchy for a PRO camera as you guys know but when I looked around there really wasn't one that meets my needs. Some like the 5D aren't fast enough FPS and some like the 1D have only 10mpx. Technology hasn't reached the point where a (Canon) camera has what I need. Well not till December when the EOS 1D Marl IV comes out. 16mpx with 10fps and incredible ISO ratings that are off the charts. It's still not FF but I consider that a bonus for sports because the 1.3 magnification actually would be perfect for a 70-200 at a hockey game (1.6x is a little too close).

I NEED A 1DMKIV!!!!

Now to find $5000 to buy it. hmm..

I still say you should take a serious look at a D3. I'm sure you can still get good money via eBay for your Canon gear. That would offset the additional cost greatly.

I'm biased, I know, but looking at it objectively, that's what I'd do were I you. And if you look on the sidelines of major sporting events these days, you'll find that's what a lot of pro sports photogs have done as well.

I just can't buy a D3 or any camera named after a Mighty Ducks movie.

I'm thinking a lot of people will be dumping their 1dmk3's to get the mk4.

It's only 10mpx but I'm hearing that is plenty when you have the IQ these have.

My guess is that he has or is on the verge of pulling the trigger on a 1D, which can't mount EF-S lenses (the lenses protrude to far into the mirror box and only work on 1.6x crop cameras).

Congrats on the 1D! EF 16-35 f/2.8 to replace?

rinkrat
November 12th, 2009, 10:04 AM
I was thinking of the 24-70 2.8 first as a walk around lens then the 16-35 added later if I really miss the wide since I am keeping the 11-22 for the 50D for now.

I'm gonna miss the 17-55 for the IS. This lens has created some amazing images and does magical things with stage light.

First I was going to get a 1D Mark IV (coming out in a few weeks) but after looking at all of the trouble people have had with Canon high end cameras for a year after they are first released, the fact I would have to upgrade to Adobe CS4 and the fact that I really don't need a lot of the new features like video mode, ultra high ISO etc., plus the fact that I could get a 1d Mark III for half the price, I decided to go with the Mark III. I was kind of worried about it having only 10 mpx but the photos I have seen are incredible and show that high megapixels are not as important as I suspected. I also talked to a photog at the Kings game that has 2 of them and he confirmed that the quality is fine on the Mark III.

I'm keeping the 50D as my second camera and have an extra 30D now if anyone is interested in getting a quality pro-sumer camera cheap.

I love the 24-70, definitely one of my favorite zooms. Really good flare control, nice and sharp with good contrast, there is a little barreling on the wide end, but it isn't bad. I think you will find it a worthy brethren to the 17-55.

Sold! Wow, lenses are a good investment. I had that one for two years and got thousands of awesome pics from it and then sold it for just a few hundred less than I paid. Way better return than a two year old camera body. ;) 24-70 arrives tomorrow! I'll miss that 17-55 IS, best lens evar. (sniff)

The 24-70 f/2.8 with the Big Gold N on the barrel that I bought when I bought my D3 has been the everyday walkaround lens that is more often on that body than not since the day I bought it. Fabulous lens.

20mm prime coming soon!! Also, perhaps, a 105mm f/2.0DC for portraits. Gotta love retroactive pay raises!

rinkrat
November 12th, 2009, 08:25 PM
I was thinking that the next would be some ultra wide prime because even when I have a wide zoom I always make it as wide as possible so might as well have a fixed width. For now I'll stick with the 11-22 on the 50D as the wide option, the 24-70 on either camera from there and then the 70-200 after that. All bases covered.

I'm getting the 20mm for event candids and as a light-weight lens for a backpacking trip I hope to take next Summer (I want to hike Mt. Whitney again). It's nice and wide with little distortion compared to my 14mm, and it weighs like half of what the 14 does.

Yeah I was looking at used ones and decided the 1 year warranty on a new one would be worth it since it's right here in Irvine. I've been wanting a pro vamera for awhile, can't wait to get acquainted with it. The custom functions are incredible, everything is configurable.

It's got the latest firmware. What is blue dot? I'm pretty sure it's up to date because it was bought from a busy online dealer. That's another reason why I didn't want a used one, I don't want to start off by having to take it in for the latest hardware tweaks. This should have everything fixed and working (crossing fingers).

Okay guys/gals. Need some help here. Making my wish list for x-mas. I'm really in the market for a new camera lens for my Canon Xsi. Currently, I am just using the kit lens but would like to finally make an upgrade. Looking for something in the $500 range...maybe less. I mainly like to shoot outdoor shots and some close up (indoor shots). Been playing with the flash quite a bit as well. Any suggestions? I am looking at this one currently:

You will thank me later. Everyone (http://gcalvin.com/blog/?p=275) should have one of these (or Nikon's equiv) in their kit bags.

Put a stack of extension tubes behind this lens and find some good lighting, and you've got a pretty kick ass little macro setup, as well.

I can vouch for the 1.8 being a blast to have on the camera. It certainly takes some time to get used to because of there being no zoom, but it really makes for some nice photos.

I s'pose it depends on the mount. I've compared the 1.4/1.7 in the Sony/Minolta mount before and the law of diminishing returns was very much in evidence IMHO. The 1.7 is already razor sharp. The 1.4 was slightly sharper wide open, had slightly better bokeh, and that's about it.
