Guess the last one got deleted eh?
Anyway today I played 2 games in 12 hours... Won the first won 7-0 and got a hatty and an apple, the. For my normal team we were down 3-1 all game and I got 2 late ones to tie it at 3 all. I going to sleep for 4 hours now and head up to the rally. Wish me luck?
How's the summer league treating you boys?

Ok something I just noticed but never seemed strange til now. In the final Hank went last, but quick went first in the handshake line. After our games the goalie is pretty much always first in our lines. Not sure if thats specific to norcal or everywhere. Just curious if you guys usually have the same.
Also won 5-1 on the night the Kings won, lost 4-1 on Sunday. Blocked 3 shots in that game and somehow not a one of them got me in the pads. I look like a red headed stepchild.

Everyone is different. But for the team I sub for the order is pretty random.

I post in the rink on hf about beer league play but I thought I would start posting here too. Anyone else deal with the guy on your team who won't stop trying to coach you and is yelling the entire game trying to get people to do this and that? I don't mind if the guy is better than me and/or is legitimately trying to help because I'm always open for advice, but he has no points in 3 games while I have 5 and it's just getting annoying at this point. This is my first beer league since playing junior all of my life so I wanted to hear some of you out and see if this is something that's pretty common around these parts.

I learned as an adult so the levels I play in don't have guys that got a lot of reps as a kid. My higher level team has some guys that played as a kid and there's a lot less yelling for sure. On my lower level team people often ask me for advice only because I've been there so long. I will say using points is a poor barometer though, one of the highest scoring players on the lower level team used to get his points purely through puck hogging and 2-3 minute shifts. He's a good enough skater to play higher levels, but nobody wants to play with him due to the rep he built. He's better now but just an example.

Ya I agree with what you're saying. To clarify I didn't mean to sound like a dbag when comparing point totals, what I was trying to get at was the guy is the weakest on the team yet the whole game he's ripping guys apart and chewing them out for making the slightest mistake and I can tell the rest of the team isn't having it. If someone wants advice I have no problem helping them out or having someone else explain something to them. This guy is new to the team like myself, not a team rep or anything, so he's just getting on the nerves of the guys who have been on the team for a while. I was too vague in my initial post, but basically I wanted to know if you dealt with these kinds of guys who don't try to help via constructive criticism, rather yell the whole game and just get under everyone's skin. I mean it's beer league not the show I figured everyone would just want to have fun while still being competitive, but I guess these kinds of guys are in all walks of life.

Yeah man it seems every team I play on has that guy. The one I just left, the guy who ran the team was that guy. We even had PP, PK, overtime lines and Shootout line ups. It was cool but also waaaay overboard. We had a locker room sign and scouting reports... A little overboard

Ive seen that guy, they tend to go to their next best opportunity.
As an aside I had the opposite kind of thing. Played a horrible first game last night. We are 6th but were playing the 2nd place team (out of 12) and these guys just ate our lunch. Perfect cycling and dropping D down. I was playing D and at least 5 times a goal happened because of a complete brainfart I had in coverage or attempting to get the puck around the boards. One of our guys lit into me and I had nothing for him other than I was playing a **** game. He backed off with, "cmon man work on it out there". It wasn't any kind of happy moment but completely acceptable.
2nd game was a little better, played wing, scored a couple goals and assits, shoulda had a couple more and even though I was dog ass tired I think I ended up a plus 2. They had a couple speed demons that were cherry picking something fierce.

I hate it when that happens. Sure sucks the fun out of the game.
I enjoy Pickups and free play more then games now days simply because the lack of over competitive guys who think they know everything during game play.

I took this season off but still check the stat sheets and talk to my friends that are playing (Lakewood Ice, "The Rinks"). The league has been the same 5 teams more or less over the last 3 years, and with 3 seasons a year, some bad blood has developed with most teams. The scoresheets have shown a fight in nearly every game on my old team, countless misconduct and roughing penalties. It kind of makes me not miss playing there at all.

I almost exclusively play roller (only because it's cheaper) and my rink doesn't have any AC. In fact you could probably cook a chicken on the bench for some summer games. I decided this year to take the summer off and enjoy a bit of rest. Also I don't like being dehydrated after one shift. It gets really hot in West Covina. So I don't have any stories about games other than some pickup stuff. No biggie though.
Regarding the player/coach teammate, I used to play on a team where there was a guy that would constantly do this. I became irritated by him and actively mocked him while he was out on the rink. He never got the clue and I stopped playing on that team after one season.

I hear ya. Old goalie here. One of the last teams I played on out in my area I joined them about 3/4's into a season. They were a real close knit bunch but I did notice they had an aggressive edge to their game....and I guess a reputation from another rink. As luck would have it, I pulled my groin a bit in my very first game and it became increasingly worse because...as a dummy, I couldn't say no to another team that needed help in their playoff run. I never said anything to my new guys just fearing that they'd quickly think that I was damaged goods. Playoffs now. I didn't have a very good game. One of the more over-competitive/aggressive/game 7 of the Final guys is standing over me after I froze the puck and says, "You have to find the rebounds better." Pissed me off! I'm not the type that calls people out infront of others but got my chance afterwards walking out of the dressing room and told him that I'd gladly hand over my equipment to him so he can play the position. His eyes had that big, surprised look and he started to back peddle saying he didn't mean it, yadda yadda....and that was that. I sort of miss league play but pickups with a couple of private groups is more refreshing these days. I find myself not wanting to commit to a team...if I do, it will be with a bunch of guys that just enjoy playing win or lose.....and I don't think they're really out there.

I started playing roller again last month in Huntington Beach. So far so good. Played the first place team last week and they destroyed us. Typically, their worst player had the biggest mouth. It's an over 40 league.
My last game of my 40s tonight. I'll be 50 tomorrow.

Thought I would post this here since I think a few of you play at the rink in Lakewood.. I had some free time earlier today so I went to stick time there since I work nearby and there were a few players running drills, one dressed in Shark gear from head to toe. They let me join and I realized the guy in the sharks gear was Matt Nieto, which made sense as he is from Long Beach (I just started going to the rink this last year since starting to work nearby so I don't know how common it is to see him there). It was so insane to see how good and fast he was up close, it's literally hard to fathom how they can be that good. His skating, stick-handling, shooting were all out of this world. Pretty random but it was a sweet experience and thought you guys would enjoy hearing about it.

I agree about how astonishing it is to see a guy with talent up close like that. I remember I went to the old Glacial rink in Anaheim about 10 years ago(now KHS I believe), and there was this russian prospect that was right around 12 years old and had boat loads of talent. I saw the kid running drills on the other end of the rink and was in awe at how fast and sharp he was... AT 12!!! Anyway, I never got the kid's name and I'm sure he's playing in the K right now.

Bad news on our playoff front. Their goalie was hot and ours wasn't. On the plus side I scored a goal off a faceoff slapper. Still a disappointing end to the season even if the game was very well contested.

Well that wasn't exactly a beer league check, it sounds like it was a pretty flagrant attempt to injure.
I mean I've checked people when I thought a game was getting out of hand and I needed the refs to get involved before, but only with something that is an obvious bodycheck in a non checking league. I will admit to targeting the players that I think deserve it but it requires things to come together. I make sure it's going to be a clean hit or I skip it.
Generally speaking though you can't stop asshats from being asshats, but at least usually they're obvious. The scary stuff comes from the guy that just snaps and you have no idea what he's doing.

I do the same, Jammer. After receiving what I felt was a bit too much contact more than once by the same player, more times than not I will line him up along the boards and throw the hip. I've done it a few times over my beer league career.

NEW SEASON BOYS AND GIRLS!!!
I have finally played my last game as an easy rider. Bittersweet HOWEVER, moved rinks (closer to home) and I am on a new team called the Hooligans out of escondido. They're playing the championship game here tomorrow so I will be in attendance, with the season starting the next week. Anyone move teams this season? And good summer league stories? Also, I've been doing the yoga for hockey players on YouTube 3 times a week for the last 2 weeks, I feel more loose but I haven't played a game yet so I'll let you guys know!

Sounds like some new fun awaits for ya Diddy! The team I played with at Lakewood for a few years just wrapped up their season last week, new season starts tomorrow, but the team is full (i didn't play last season), so I won't be playing with them, no biggie, I'm ready to switch teams as well. Most likely will be playing out of Anaheim "The Rinks" with a print vendor of ours at work, I believe their season is half way done, so when it ends I will jump on their team. Looking forward to playing at a new place, with new team mates. The only down side is that the rink is a bit further than Lakewood for me, that was only a 10 minute drive, this one is about 25 minutes.

Played pickup on saturday morning with the usual guys, but this game annoyed me. The players on the other other side were better than the side I was on. Now I get the idea of playing against better people makes you better, but when the scoring ratio is 5:1 in their favor it becomes discouraging. I asked if one of the guys would switch to the other side to even things out and he laughed. So I started heckling them about how fun it must be to just score until continue to outplay the other team in a non league game. I left early because I was annoyed and also I knew that if the guys on my team got tired they'd stop playing too. It takes two sides to play a game, and if they didn't want to switch then they'd have a full bench playing against no one.

Douchy pickups are just as douchy as league play at times.
I'm thinking about dropping in for a third team as there's a gap between divisions for my teams. Whole lotta new teams and some realignment but by far I can't wait to play against the "Soft dump in the corner" These guys will either be awesome or A class *******s. Hoping for awesome though.

Well tonight was one of those really unsatisfying events. Scored a couple goals and we were up 5-3 with a minute to go. From the bench I watched us give up both goals on just real bad decisions and breakdowns. Shoulda had it but I couldn't really complain since I was too gassed to go out there and help. We skated 9 and the D hung tough for 44 minutes.

Took a break from work again today and hit the 11 AM ST at Lakewood. This time around I got to run drills with Parros and some prospects that I didn't get the names of. I've met Parros a few times before, the dude's funny as hell and legitimately a nice guy. I grew up going to stick times at Bay Harbor and Health South and pros would always have the ice to themselves it seemed so it's cool they practice right beside you at Lakewood (granted it is summer) and even let you join. So I just tried to keep up but the pace they go at is just insane. Figured I would keep letting you guys know about the encounters I have with NHL'ers haha.

Just wanted to post a rant about The Rinks. I played at Anaheim Ice for a while and I left that place because the schedule was so inconsistent. I finally had enough when my "Sunday" summer league had ONE out of twelve games on a Sunday. I went to Glacial Gardens in Lakewood and had relatively consistent games. I was playing in the Wednesday leagues for about 5 years and had maybe 2-3 games on Thursdays (which I can't play because of work) a season. Not a huge deal, I understand that this is So. Cal and we are short on teams and the rinks need to cater to teams so they can collect cash to run the business. I get it.
Ever since the Ducks bought out Glacial and it became The Rinks at Lakewood Ice, it's been as bad as Anaheim Ice. My "Wednesday" league now has 3 out of 14 games on Wednesday night. I pretty much had to drop out from that team (still subbing since I actually enjoy playing with them) and joined another team on Sunday nights. Surprsingly, all of the games are all on Sunday. But all of a sudden a team drops out and our division gets restructured and now my team is playing in Gold. I understand that they don't want higher skilled teams that are in the lower divisions, but I thought they'd just let us finish out the season since 20% of the season is gone and our games haven't been that bad.
Went to Stick Time on Monday and it was ridiculous. The rink was full of different coaches that took up the majority of the ice. If you didn't pay for a coach, you'd be stuck in a corner shooting against a wall. I wound up with a coach (on accident) and didn't find out until the end that it was a semi-private lesson. I'm not mad that I had to pay the coach because he actually did help, but that's not really stick time in my opinion. If they're going to have coaches doing private lessons on the majority of the ice, the rink should allocate some time for them during another session. This was supposed to be a public stick time. Stick time everywhere else (including when it was Glacial) is where you get to skate around the ice, get to work on your handling, shooting and just get some practice time in. I can't get any practice time when I'm stuck in a corner without a goal to shoot on. This place is such a **** show now. I've been playing for years and The Rinks just seem to run their rinks like a circus. It's the Wild Wild West and anything goes there. I'm going to look at some teams at El Segundo next season. Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to share my experiences with you guys.

I agree that the stick times are usually a gong show. They don't plan it well..sometimes you'll have the whole ice to yourself, and other times you won't have a place to skate, which defeats the purpose of stick time. When I went yesterday from one blue line to the goal was taken up by a goalie getting a lesson, and the rest was Parros and the gang running drills. Parros felt bad that I didn't have any ice which is when he invited me to run with them, but I can see how people can easily get shafted. Toyota's not as bad with leaving ice for those who pay for ST and not personal lessons.

Wow that was empty compared to Monday. Our group (with two coaches) had one side from the blueline to the goal, another group (another coach) had the middle of the ice between the blue lines, and it looked like another group (looked like a goalie lesson) had the hash marks to the goal on the other side. I saw two guys passing a puck back and forth between the hash marks and blue line (w/o a goal) and was wondering what was going on there. They were the only players without a coach, so I'm guessing those are the people who came for stick time that didn't come for a lesson.

I finally got to play with eddieshack23 on Monday night and had a blast. I hadn't played roller in 2 years or so and I was eased back into with with a double-header, lol! We were up 4-1 in the first game, then lost 8-6, but in our second game we took the lead from the get-go and won 9-4. eddieshack23 did some serious work putting in at least 4 goals I think in each game? I had 3 assists in the first game, and one goal in the second on a beautiful bang-bang play and pass from eddieshack23 . The downside, I got some serious blisters, as my inline skates are too big. I stopped by GoalieMonkey today to visit my buddy Wyatt and picked up some Stable26 socks, I read great reviews about them and hope they help out with keeping my heels locked in. http://stable26.com

Nothing good to report other than I now have a reason to hate NAS, they had a show at the fox theater on sunday night and I drove around for 25 minutes looking for parking. Our roller team keeps rollin' through the competition, we had a nice 10-4 win last night. I lost track of how many goals eddieshack23 had, but him and I had a nice two on 1 that resulted in some bang-bang passing and I netted a goal out of it. We moved the puck pretty well last night and I think I literally had 10-12 SOG (with 3 or 4 assists), I was aiming for the corners and just missed on most of them, changing it up from low to high.
I finally felt like I played up to my potential last night, my new Alkali RPD Team+ skates are feeling better and better each game, they are a dream to skate on! The transition from ice to roller took a little longer than I expected, but now I feel like I am where I should be in terms of my stick handling, passing, shooting, angles, etc.

I can't imagine going back to roller... Ice is just too much fun
btw been shelved for last week plus do to groin pull. Thought it was going to be better last weekend and I aggravated it getting out of the damnned car. Really hard to rehab these damn things when you're old.

Groin pulls are the worst. Think you're good to go, then do something seemingly innocuous and bam, back to limping.

I usually don't say this, but our goalie **** the bed on our playoff game. 3 softies man... I was shaking my head over them. Like I just said, I don't say this suff, but man oh man, it was a mess. I played in goal for soccer and water polo, so I would know when my game was off, and our netminder was way off. Our guy was slow on the low coverage to the opposite pipe on a wrap around, and that started off the scoring for the other team with 30 seconds in. To boot the other goalie was on top of his game and flashed the leather a couple times. We lost 6-5 in a heartbreaker.
Bummer... moving on to this Sunday. My other team starts the playoffs and hopefully we'll be able to gut it out.

No Fish, I'd tend to disagree with you about the groin pull. No to one-up you, but playing in the first game of the season last night I broke my right ankle in the last 40 seconds of the game. I sheared off the inside ankle bumps of both the tib and fib, dislocated my ankle in the process and tore a few ligaments. I'll take the groin pull any day of the week over this mess.
I'm out indefinitely boys. I'll have to live vicariously through your stories.

FWIW I made it back on the ice a week ago and 4 games through no recurrence of injury but holy hell are all those muscles tired and weak now.

Damn that sucks! I've heard of similar things happening to other players. Our gear is heavy and when you're tired after playing and a 40-minute drive home your body is cold as ice. It's really easy to pull a muscle. Hope you heal soon Mudz.

the team we played last night decided they had to get our goalie out of the game. He ended up in a fight and there was general chaos. Single ref who didn't really care about anything didn't help. I hope they were happy firing long distance shots into our empty net.

Well our new season is two weeks old and so far so good in the upper division that we got moved up to. Last week we lost in overtime, and last night we edged out a team of dickheads that aren't used to losing, 4-3. Our regular goalie was out sick and a few guys were too pickled to play because they were watching the college football championship. The roster was looking slim with initially only 4 guys, I almost didn't play because only having 4 guys really sucks, especially for a 9:45pm game. We ended up with 6 skaters, game on! Our sniper eddieshack23 rang the post at least 3 times last night and almost had a nice wrap around, banking it off the goalie. I ended up with 2 goals and one of them was the goal of my life, no joke, even two guys on their bench said, "wow, that was nice man" as I skated by back to our bench. (I hope that didn't sound arrogant, but I was really stoked on the goal!)
In case you are wondering about why this goal was the goal of my life, it went something like this. (as far as I can remember)
I received a pass coming out of our end, right around center rink. Skated it up the right wing side, but not necessarily along the boards, more towards the center area of the surface. I had one d'man in front of me and I forget who on our team was coming up the left side. Usually in those situations I will gain entry and snap a quick snapper through the D'man's leg on net. Well this time was no different except that as I looked towards our left winger (as if i was going to pass) I backhand toe-dragged the puck to my right (i'm a lefty) around the d'man and turned him inside out, I was then in alone on the goalie and I came in at an angle, fading to my left and as he started to open up to move to his right, I slid it in 5-hole. I couldn't believe I pulled it off!

we're a little over halfway through our winter season. Finally got back on the scoreboard this past sunday for what felt like the first time in forever. It was a strange goal which might be worth a share, not so much for the goal but the interaction.
I jumped up into the rush from D, took a pass at the blue line and from the right side dumped it straight at the boards. I jumped past the defender collected the puck at the right side of the net (it was dead, not rimmed) hit the brakes and popped back in front of the net. The goalie was standing straight up in front of me and I still don't know what he was looking at but I stuffed it home and got cleaned out by the D. As I was getting up I noticed the goalie just staring at me and I said to him "Dude I thought you were gonna drop down" he said back to me "I have no idea where you came from". He must have lost the puck completely on the dump or something but he was still utterly confused how I magically appeared in front of the net with it. We won the game and he made some great stops along the way but it was one of those fun moments.

What division and what nights are worth playing over there now? I'm toying with the idea again of playing, after being bashed to death by my 9 year old to do it, but I'm tentative. The 40 and over seems to be stacked with former NHLers, and the lower levels look like they would frustrate the piss outta me. I'm not going to go end to end at any point, I just want to be able to pass someone the puck that's not going to eat it.

We won again last night against a team that we lost to in week one, and were ahead 4-1 and eventually lost.
Overall we played alright but there was an abundance of no-look, backhand passes into la-la land committed by our team that luckily did not bite us in the ass.
eddieshack23 , any chance we can change up the lines a bit up front, maybe rotate forward partners each period? what i'm getting at is that i need more time with you out there! it would be fun to connect out there with some good scoring opportunities. last night i set larry a few times that should have at least resulted in a SOG but nothing developed. :(

No to Bay Harbor. Back in the day, I was comfortable at any level, I just played in different role the higher up I went. Now? I'd probably be fine at Bronze and could probably handle it in Silver after a few games of sucking. Sounds like I want where you are playing now.

Then you should see a certain fellow Mod , who captains my team. I know we've had problems in the past getting guys to show, so maybe you could start out as a sub to get back into the swing of things. Things seem to have improved with guys showing up, though, so you'd have to talk to him.

Another OT loss for us last night. The game started off decent enough, we were up 2-0 and then let them back in. It eventually was tied up, then we traded goals and ended up in a 3-3 tie I believe. We switched up the forward lines a bit which I felt helped out, it allowed some of us to play together and get some SOG. In the 2nd period I had a goal disallowed. Basically their goalie went to dive to cover the puck and one of our players had poked it right before the goalies glove completely covered it, so it squirted out to me and I shoveled it in, right after it crossed the goal line the ref blew the whistle. Imho it should have counted, but no biggie, it is just mens 40+ roller hockey, so I wasn't going to argue. Later in the 3rd I had picked up a lost puck by their d'man about 8 feet out in the slot, as I drifted to my right, and leaned into a backhand shot (I'm a lefty) and was going 5-hole. The goaltender dropped and as I crashed the net to follow my shot I saw it was sitting on the goal line, literally straddling it. Due to the goalie's positioning and their d'man pushing me away from the net (towards the end boards, as he should) I was unable to get my stick on it and tap it in, it was the most helpless feeling everrrrr.
Their goalie played great, and was fairly aggressive, came out to challenge shooters and handled the puck very well. He robbed me at least two or three times when I was ripping top shelf snappers, I did manage to net one though when our d'man carried the puck in the zone, circled behind the net and found me at the mid slot all alone, he passed it and I zapped it.
All in all it was a great game. They had fantastic passing and I thought we were in trouble at the beginning of the game due to this. It led to a lot of chasing the puck by us. But then we took the early lead and I was feeling better. eddieshack23 and I never got to play a full period together up front, hopefully next game we can. We did get a shift or two together in which we had a couple SOG.
So far our team is doing just fine in the upper division, we have two regulation wins, and two overtime losses.

Played back to back games for the first time since I don't know when Sunday. First game (lower level playing D for both) I picked up a puck at the blue line that squirted back. Looked at the net and the goalie came out as there was no screen but one of my guys was to the right of the net (tangled up) so I figured I'd fire it that way and see if he could get a stick on it. Well the puck kinda stuck to my blade a bit (not sure if it rolled or something) so I ended up lifting it waist high on accident smacking the defenseman in the ass and getting a goal out of it. Wasn't exactly the way I planned it but the concept was sound right?
Only bad news was my groin got gimpy by the end of the first game so in the second game I was trying to nurse it a bit. Got a puck wide on a bad line change for the other team but I knew I didn't want to try and rush the puck in. I saw the goalie charging out to set himself for the break so I said **** it and just fired a slapper about a foot off the ice short side. Caught the goalie totally off guard and he whiffed badly trying to butterfly and get his blocker down.
Hopefully I can keep this thing stretched and keep strengthening it over the next few weeks. Nagging groins are the worst.

****VENTING*****
So we played the second place team last night, a real solid group no ringers. Lost the game 4-2. The refs though had a call that just boggled the mind (there were several but this took the cake). Our team had a standard regroup, swung D passes and then caught the center flying up the middle on a curl. He cut to split the D at the blue line but one of their D men stands him up (this is a non checking league). Our center is a big boy and their D was not and as a result the D got knocked down but he did knock our center off the puck. Our winger cuts behind the play to grab the loose puck whistle blows. Everyone is confused thinking maybe there's an offsides call..... Nope elbowing on our center.

I missed my last two games because I was sick, but finally got back on the ice yesterday.
After being down 1 or 2 goals for the entire game, we rallied in the 3rd to tie the game 3-3 only to lose in the ensuing shootout. This marks our second overtime loss this season giving us a 2-0-2 record so far.
Overall, I felt like I played like crap. Still being on the tail end of the cold that won't go away, I had no lungs and no legs. I felt like I was constantly out of position and nothing but a liability when I was out on the ice. On the upside though, they recorded an assist for me, even though I don't remember touching the puck at all before the goal in question. At least it made up for the actual assist they didn't give me in game one when we were still waiting for our team jerseys with numbers to be ready.

Thanks, man. I felt like I was always behind the play and giving away the puck almost as soon as it hit my stick. Maybe it wasn't as bad as it seemed in my head.
Pretty sure I was on the bench when you tied it up. Cody got credit for the assist on your goal. The assist they gave me was on Aaron's goal which I was on the ice for, but I don't think I touched the puck.

Sunday night we had a sub goalie that I'd recognized from my higher level games. Good part was he was telling the guys in the room he'd been playing higher levels so they were getting their confidence up. Bad part is I'd played against him and lit him up a bunch of times before. Kinda sucks playing when you know your goalie is a bit of a headcase, sure enough as soon as that first one went in he totally lost all his confidence. I spent the rest of the night trying to prevent shots instead of just forcing bad angles cuz the keeper was directing them in. I'd warned the rest of my D mates about him but after he'd left the locker room some of the forwards started with the what the hell man I thought he was gonna be good stuff. To his credit there were 2 legit snipes he had no hope on, but 4 others were the kind where everyone just kinda skates away quickly. Anyway point it that I'd forgotten what it was like to have a bad goalie when you're playing D.

We won our game tonight, 2-1. It was scoreless til the third period. Both teams had a few golden opportunities during the first two periods but failed to put the bisquit in the basket.
eddieshack23 does Tim play forward? I might see if he wants to switch with me. I dont want to break up you and Glen up front, at the same time I am not really finding any magic with you know who up front with me.
He does. Hit him up, he should go for it. I was looking for you to make that move again, you had it set up a couple of times.

Thanks man! I pretty much gave up on receiving any sort of quality pass from him so I started to try to make stuff happen on my own (not the best "team" thing to do, but it was all I felt I could really do at that point). It felt like almost every time there was a breakout and he had the puck I would head down rink to open space only to see the puck was stolen or coughed up.
Like you said I did have a couple opportunities to make that inside/out move but I got stuffed on two of the 3 I tried. I did have one semi coast-to-coast where I was able to dangle one or two guys then get a snapper off, but the goalie ate the shot and no rebound was given up. Then there was that one when I was behind the goal line and stepped up and out and tried to bank a backhander off the inside of his left leg, it worked, but then he squeezed the pads and it was stopped about 4" from the goal line. :(
Enough about me though, we still managed to get the W!

I didn't play this week, but the other team has a ringer that I'm starting to get really tired of. Dude should be playing at least one, if not two or more divisions higher. Wish there were more than two teams in our division so we didn't have to play this asshat every week.

We got waxed last night by a clearly superior team, 8-1 I think? They actually played as a team and moved the puck like crazy, the time of possession was insanely lopsided, as it felt like we where shorthanded all night. They passed well, they moved well, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous.
I finally got to play a bit up front with eddieshack23 but it was tough to get anything going for us. Our team has a couple players on it that are guaranteed to dish anywhere between 3-7 no-look, backhanded passes either up the middle in our zone, or just anywhere. Each week it is the same thing, I will skate to an open area to give that person with the puck a lane to pass to and it never fails, they don't look where they are passing and just fling it forward, usually to an opposing player.
I know it is just Monday night roller hockey, but that ish is growing more and more frustrating. :(

Regarding the problem guys, I don't want to be a dick and be "that guy" that gives pointers or what not during a game, but maybe a general statement in between periods can be said? I dunno. I know Brucey mentioned it to one of them after the game.

This speaks volumes! That is the thing I think I can't stand about the current state of indoor roller hockey (and some outdoor rinks too), is the use of the roller hockey puck. There is too much friction, the puck is too light and it all just feels way too unnatural to me. The ball had a nice weight to it, it rolled smoothly and it just added a nice overall fluidness to the game being played. Part of my overall distaste for roller hockey is how flat out awkward the game feels to me. Constantly having to push the puck along the way instead of having it just move along easily with you (as the ball did, and as a puck does on ice) sucks.

I agree on all counts. It sucks that in round 2 of playing hockey for me (until a few years ago, I hadn't played any sort of hockey since maybe 1992) I got used to the roller puck first. I mainly focused on roller hockey this time because parks don't close, and ice time is expensive and poorly timed for a 9-5'er. Now that I'm in an ice league though, I almost wish I'd just focused on ice and never got inline skates this time around.

My first puck I learned to play with was an orange sand filled plastic puck with metal bolt in the middle that held it together.
The puck was awesome.
1) When the plastic finally wore down and broke open you would see a spiral of sand flying out as it flew through the air.
2) Or, when you got a beauty of a slapper off or hit the post and the bolt flew out it was a short burst of joy and then a bummer because your puck is soon to be done.
3) Street wise, It worked pretty well with a few bounces but it helped our hands improve..
I hated the ball just never could get use to it. The curving of the ball on the shot sucked. I did use golf balls to learn to stick handle. I recommend those the best.
Once I moved to indoor roller and club team we were using the orange jofa pucks or mach 1s.
Best surface to play roller on is wood. Whittier Skateland had one of the best wood surfaces when it was kept up and the Jofa/Mach1s would fly like ice.
Going to ice was a little different due to puck weight but overall pretty good.

Well I guess I'm the lone voice of reason here (just kidding...). I almost exclusively play roller WITH a puck on sport court. I've found that I like the game play and for the most part the guys I play with and against. Also, it is much much less expensive. So from an economic perspective roller > ice. I'm sure that I'll be given a ration of poo-poo for ^^^ this, but in my mind hockey is hockey.
As most know I broke my leg on the first game of the season (I'm healing nicely by the way, see the Deadpool image above), and I got to "coach" both of my teams that I played on in the finals. We lost both, but I really gained a respect for my teammates and for how I play defense. So to say that roller sucks because the puck is too light, well... you're just not playing with/against/for the same guys I am.
In the end, talent wins out.

I don't think we were saying roller sucks because the puck is too light. At least for me, all I was saying is that the pucks suck. I would rather use something that moves more like an ice puck. I still enjoy roller, but my main goal is to play ice. Familiarity with roller pucks has impeded my progress on ice.

Our roller season came to an end last night. We did alright considering they bumped us up to the "Upper 40+" division. Two of the teams there should be in an advanced league imho, even tho they are 40+, these guys are ringers and play excellent hockey together, exemplifying teamwork.
I think we played for the "lower" of the "upper" 3rd place position last night? I don't know, it was confusing. I think the final score was 9-4? We were being shutout until the third period. @eddieschack23 had a nice shot where he was trying to snipe a top corner, it hit off the goalies shoulder and then literally plopped down flat and stopped like half a puck length from the goal line!!! I was too far away to tap it in, those are the worst! I ended up netting our first goal of the night with a Top Titty type of wrester from a steep angle off to the goalies left, from inside the face-off circle, between the dot and goal line. Our d'man was coming down the middle, crossed center and hit me down low with a nice pass. I scooped it, cupped it, and weighted my bottom hand as I let it fly...zoooom, over the goalies shoulder and into the back of the net! :) After that we gave up a flurry of goals in a matter of minutes, but then we scored 3 more back in another matter of minutes. The team we played is half full of stick-work hacks and guys that think they are NHL defensemen with chops to your lower back followed up by punches to your upper body. Last night wasn't too bad overall though, although I feel like I got slashed a couple times (a la shin pad echoing throughout the rink) but no calls were made. No biggie, it didn't hurt my leg.

Just curious, have you ever played ice hockey? The entire fluidity of the game trumps roller in every aspect. That is what I was getting at. Roller is fun but imho ice is so much more fun.
I agree with you completely regarding the cost of the two, roller is much easier on the pocket book. That alone is what has kept me from getting back on my Sunday night ice team, the value just isn't there (for me). As a winger, we always get screwed when it comes to ice time, we always skate 4 D, 2, C and then rotate wingers through. When we have a full bench (of 13 or more) sometimes we only get 3 shifts a period, that is ridiculous and not worth the money at all.
Like RoyalSubject said, the puck and sportcourt itself does make it less fluid, you have to really push/babysit it along the floor, where as on ice, the puck moves with you, less friction. Last night I proved my point by trying to clap one around the boards from behind our own net. I got a lot of stick on it, just over the dashers and into the glass and on ice that thing would have flung out of the zone in a hurry....last night the roller puck pretty much died when it hit the glass and it barely made it out to the top of the face-off circle. I don't have an answer as to how to make a better puck, but in the end hockey is hockey, perhaps. I suppose that debate could be like wave-riding is wave-riding (surfers v.s boogies), in the end, it is still wave riding. So yes, I do agree there too. If ice leagues pricing came down and were next to the the same as roller leagues I'd be playing ice over roller hands down.
I'm not too sure what you meant by "your'e just not playing with/against/for the same guys I am" means. I have played on too many beer league teams to count (more ice than roller), and grew up playing ice hockey (bantams through juniors). I have played with some great guys, both skill wise and personality wise. My current roller team is full of great guys, guys that don't take it too serious which at this stage of life is perfect. To clear up any confusion for you, I do have fun playing hockey, whether it is ice or roller.
Hopefully I didn't come off as a meanie-head, I know stuff gets misconstrued on forums. eddieshack23 and @pdiddy know me and can probably hear my tone as they read this, its a happy tone. :)

Our winter seasons finally closed out. Due to the split divisions I play in I'm not eligible to play for both my teams in the playoffs. I went for the higher level team even though it was last place and playing the first place team. First place team all the sudden had a bench of 15 guys when normally they roll 10 every game, it showed. Their talent was way more spread out and we hung tough. Was a winnable game but we went down 3-1. Turns out the first place team was not as good as their record, they went down in the next round to a team that has some seriously good guys when they show up.
I did cheer on my lower level team and they took home the championship. Good for those guys even though it sucked not being out there with them I respect the rule that helps keep the guys in the right divisions when the games "count".
Summer league starts for us next week, will be interesting to see which teams I end up on.

TSC is probably one of the most expensive places to play adult league. Not sure what area you moved to, there are a few other rinks within 20 miles or so of TSC that are probably cheaper. Draft skates work just as you described. Teams that need players have their captains there usually and will check out the skate and see what player(s) they think would fit their team best.

AnaheimIce Anaheim is more expensive then TSC.
A few years back I paid 590 for 25 games @ TSC where AnaheimIce wanted 650 for 25 games.
However, TSC does have some of the nicest facilities for Hockey compared to the other options. However, I am basing my opinion on rinks I have played at.
Rinks I have played at in so cal.
* AnaheimICE

* Westminster Rinks
* Lakewood Glacial(now Rinks)

Had a couple of exhibition games on Sunday 15 minutes apart. Nothing like starting the season on a B2B.
Game one we had 9 skaters so we rolled 3 D. I was one of them but I was concerned because one of the guys never ****ing changes unless there's a whistle. Thankfully he got with the program quickly and we were usually only out there for about 90 seconds at a time, two minutes tops which is really good for a beer league. There was one shift with the long change where I got pinned out there for almost 3 minutes but my partner said **** it and just changed. He turned out to be the right call as I was completely toast and needed the new partner to cover my non moving ass at that point.
Good news was our forwards were rocking it, some teams are just so aggressive you have to cherry pick and thats what we did. Of course our ref's weren't handing out assists but the 8-3 win mostly came from well placed chips and lofts from the back end over pinching D to wide open wingers. I did manage to rush up into one play and get my own breakaway goal too which was nice.
Second game was my lower division team and thankfully they had 15 skaters. Got on the ice with them and it was good to be back since they were all celebrating their championship. The game started and I simply forgot how much slower the division was. I was making retarded moves along the boards anticipating their player to be moving, and I'd just put it right back where they were cuz they hadn't moved at all. I also had to apologize to the ref cuz these guys were so much more unsteady on their feet. So after that adjustment it was nice that the boys on our side were really good together, making passes and lots of changes. 6 D and it seemed like the longest we sat for was 2 minutes tops. Only took one rush up the ice on the right wing side which earned a nice assist, three of their players came over hell bent on stopping me and I just flicked a backhand to our man coming right down the middle unmarked. We won 7-0 and while it wasn't the greatest experience for the other team I'm pretty sure we weren't super douchey considering most of them were smiles after the game and genuinely thanking us for the skate.
Hope the rest of the season goes as well.

Double header last night. Won the first game easily 5-3, game was not as close as the score. Our goalie just had a bad night. A small thing but I'm gonna bitch about it anyway. The refs in the game are notorious for not giving assists if the pass doesn't happen in the offensive zone. Not to toot my own horn too much but I popped three guys streaking through center ice from our goal line who went straight in to score. Not a single assist was given.
Game 2 however was as hard fought 9-2 loss as you could have. It was still 0's halfway through the second when I experienced my first in game stanchion goal. Our goalie jumped behind the net on the dump and sure as **** it came off the glass right in (I was in the box for clearing the crease after a late whistle caused our goalie grief). Skating only 9 guys (one in rental skates) it was a bit of a demoralizer. Right after that they got a breakaway and scored a legit goal. Following that they had a cross corner dump that one of our D stuck a leg out on and deflected back into our net. We came back to 3-1 but the wheels were coming off. By the third they were just overwhelming us. To the refs credit he did toss a guy for celebrating their 6-2 goal with an unsportsmanlike (it was his 4th penalty of the game).

Is this still about the average rule of thumb?
Season of Ice $500-600
Season of Roller $150
Yes, however Roller leagues I've played in required 3-4 seasons per year (12-15 games) where Ice seasons were always half the year (20-25 games), so something to consider as well.
I should also note that I have not played in a roller leave in about 5 years, but I feel this hasn't changed.

Excellent point. The one at HB Inline is like that, 10 regular season games, with up to 2 or 3 playoff games, depending where ya get seeded. They usually start the next season the following week, no down time at all.
At Lakewood Ice, we play 14 games, plus 2 or 3 playoff games. I believe there are 3 seasons a year? It all depends on the holidays and what not.

I believe all of the Anaheim Rinks-affiliated leagues are 3 seasons per year (Spring, Summer, and Fall/Winter), 16 game seasons.
Unrelated question: I see a fair number of adults playing with a full face shield on their helmet. Is this pretty common?

I also wear a cage. I used to wear a half shield but after too many close calls (getting hit in the face with errant sticks) and luckily not losing any teeth I went back to a cage. One time on a fore-check I got nailed hard with a puck in the cheek bone area of my cage as their defenseman was trying to clear it on a penalty kill, it actually dented the cage. If I had my visor on, it for sure would have shattered my face.

Interesting...thanks for the input!! I was kind of reluctant to use a full cage but it sounds like it's the prudent way to go, especially if I'm playing with other inexperienced players who may be swinging their sticks around all over the place...

Full shield a must in lower leagues where players don't have the full control of their sticks.
I have had some close calls though that give me a hint to change.

Starting my first league in net this coming Sunday! It is "rookie league", but hey, you gotta start somewhere when trying a new position. I have subbed in the Copper Division (league above rookie and felt like I could hang) This should be interesting, I hear it is tough as a goalie to play down too far as it will throw your timing off as newer skaters don't really have smooth mechanics and their shots are often very wonky. Oh well, my buddy is on my team and it is his very first season of ice hockey (he played roller before) so it should be really fun!

In my other post I talked about the LTP program I just wrapped up at Anaheime Ice. For those programs we had a couple of the rookie league goalies practice with us. I talked to one, little Asian kid, he (or she, I honestly can't tell, had mask on the whole time) was there getting in some work. Decent goalie, although in the one rookie league game I watch a bit of a few weeks ago, (s)he got lit up. The other one was our goalie in the scrimmage we had and was honestly, not good at all. Like I said we lost 8-1, probably had a save % of .500, if that. Both seemed very young (and small). I've also talked to another rookie league goalie who is an excellent skater and probably a Bronze or maybe Silver leaguer but he was a beginner goalie so they had him in the rookie league. He was a bit better.
Anyway from what I've seen the level of competition for goalies in the rookie league isn't that great so you should probably do fine. Best of luck, until we meet in the fall!!!

Played a team that I hadn't seen in a couple of years who used to be major douches. I warned the guys in the room before hand that one of their guys was just an angry person and that I thought he'd been banned from the league. Game goes along and sure enough he's out there and sure enough he throws a shoulder into one of our guys way after a whistle just completely wiping him out. Ref took him quick but wasn't too long after that that guys were coming up to me on the bench "you're right, that is one angry dude". We won the game 6-3 but I'm really hoping the league tosses this guy quick. He just has trouble written all over him.

My buddy has only played roller up until a month ago. He finally bought hockey skates and started to learn how to skate on the ice. I took him to a clinic at Lakewood maybe a month back, then i brought him out to his next experience on ice, an LGK Midnight pick up game. After that we did a clinic at KHS (where I played goalie). So he has a total of 3 sessions of being geared up on the ice before he joined the Lakewood Ice Rookie League. Lakewood would be closer for you than Anaheim Ice, all games are Sunday afternoons between 4 and 6pm I believe.

I can barely skate. Getting better slowly, but I'm also getting older quickly, so I'm probably (maybe even hopefully) never going to play hockey above the lowest tier. That hasn't prevented me from playing beer league hockey. Believe it or not, I am not always the worst skater on my team. Other poor skaters come in, and they also improve, just like me.
I started playing hockey about 20 years ago, when one of my college mates (from Providence) invited me to play pick-up roller hockey with a group that used to play in a school yard. Eventually, the two of us started playing in some casual, friendly ice hockey pick-up games as well. Fortunately, for me, I seemed to be in with a good crowd who were far more amused than annoyed by my lack of skill. I've known plenty of short fuses, but really bad people have been few and far between. Shortly, another college friend (this one from Toronto), encouraged me to join a league at Pickwick, not at the same level as him, mind you; obviously, I was in Division 5, their lowest tier. I also played on a roller hockey team around that time. After a couple of seasons, work dried up for me for a long time, and I had to hang up the skates entirely.
Last year, I started playing again, and, of course, I was still terrible, and also older, but I'm having a blast. I like being part of a team as I'm improving my game. We won a championship in my first season, lost in the finals in the second season, and then won maybe one game in the third season. This season, we are back to being very good again. My skating is still pretty poor, but I try to make up for that by keeping my legs moving the whole time, and playing smart, good position. Also, I am consigned to wing.
We play at a level below Copper, if you can imagine, and that's one of the reason why it's a great situation, if you're looking for a relatively chill situation. True, everyone is competitive, and the will to win can cause tempers to flare at times, but mostly it's friendly competition. So, as you'd expect, at this level, there's a mix of complete beginners looking to improve their game, and experienced players who are either getting older or just maybe burned out from the extra tension that higher levels of competition can bring.
Initially, I thought the pressure to be useful would make me work harder, but that aspect is a mixed bag. One thing is sure, however, and that is skating against better players with something on the line has helped me get better quickly. While my game has improved, I've hit a plateau, and I need to put in more ice time to get to the next level, so that's the next thing on my agenda. Seems like many of you are putting in the work before even jumping into a league, which I commend.
But I thought I'd share my story to let you know that you don't have to be among the strongest skaters on your team to jump into the lowest tiers of beer league, unless you only want to play D.

Update on my broken leg: it feels much better now, and I'm planning on meeting with the doctor to see if I can skate. If I get the OK, I'm going to just do some drills and not play for a bit until the muscles come back. I only watched about 10 minutes of the game. Some decent skaters, some not so much. From what you described, it sounds like you could probably use a bit more ice time, but others are saying go for it, so what do I know? I'm basically right where you are as far as ability, to be honest. As I said in other post, for me I'd rather wait a bit and get some skill before jumping into the league, but at the same time I don't want to be doing drills forever either trying to perfect my skating, at some point I have to get into a game and just learn that way as well.

We ain't getting any younger, thats for sure. You can do drills til you are blue in the face, but I'd take the rookie league plunge sooner than later. You will surprise yourself most likely and I think you or someone else mentioned in another post, when in a game situation, you just get stuff done. You don't worry about what body part is doing what, you see the puck over there, you skate to it, you get a stick on it, and make a play. You won't really have time to over think stuff in a game, on the other hand, I see a lot of rookie players not taking that extra split second to look at where they are passing the puck. So, to contradict myself, you actually do have a little more time to think than you might think you do. Did that make sense?
Anyhow, I am loving all the action these threads are getting lately!

LOL yeah that made sense. When we had our scrimmage for the LTP clinic, I felt real good out there. Maybe it's just from years and years of watching but it just felt like I had a good grasp of what was going on. But realize the competition was as about as low as it gets, and we were all moving at a slug's pace, so in a real game that would likely change. My GF shot some video and watching later it was like, "are we really skating that slow?!" I did have a couple of real grade A scoring chances. And I totally agree about the over-thinking thing. This is why I'm not following the suggested path, which if I were I wouldn't be playing until next year. Get some skating in, some stick work, and jump into the league in the fall. I know I won't be horrible. Maybe do some pick ups in between now and then to get my feet wet. I'm OK with that.
And I also think its great and refreshing that I'm not the only one in this boat. I remember posting in the learning to skate thread that hadn't had a new post in 2 years thinking, why bother? Turns out there's at least a few of us out there and maybe more lurkers.

Anyone who does the LGK/MHC pickups at TSC who want pointers please feel free to ask. I'm generally there. One of the taller players who generally has Boston Socks and white Boston jersey without the crest on.
Try to get in a rookie league. Doing drills is fine and pickups are great. But a league will get you use to game speed of play.
Anaheimice pickups on Friday night(10pm) have been little advanced recently so that probably is not the best option at the moment for beginners.

Just had our first Rookie League game yesterday afternoon…well that was brutal! I must have faced at least 30 shots, gave up one in the 2nd, and two in the third. First goal went 7-hole, felt it go off my left bicep. Second goal I was completely screened on, saw it right as it went through the D's legs and over my left pad. Third goal was blocker side and I was so exhausted at that point that I couldnt get it in front of the shot. Our team only had 10 shots, and was shutout.
So about this team, literally 8 of the 10 skaters seriously looked like they have never skated before. My buddy whom is also brand new looked like a super star compared to them. I cant even tell you how many breakaways I stopped, 2 on 0's, men left all alone wide open in the slot. The refs were giving me propps, and said this game would be so out of hand if I wasnt standing on my head. I even had two sprawling saves that I surprised myself with.
My buddy joked that it was like keystone cops on ice! Our team was clearly outmatched, meaning the other team had people that knew what they were doing, had hockey sense, and ability. Our team, not so much. People were literally falling down as they tried to play the puck. I finally had to use our timeout halfway through the 3rd when it was only 2-0. I calmly told the team what I was seeing and was asking for help because I was gassed...I almost puked, thats how many shots I was facing.
I guess thats what you get when you sign up for Rookie League. I was just hoping that we had more players with more hockey sense, and even margianally better skills (hopefully those will develop). I was also helping them with their positioning on lining up for faceoffs in our zone. The plus side of all this is that I will learn very quickly, I have no choice.
Overall I felt strong but my endurance declined fast as the 3rd period wound down. I focused on keeping my stick down and my butt down as well. My stance felt good, I pushed it a bit wider than last time out and that helped with my b-fly. During warmups I actually did some b-fly slides and it was fun!
A gal was taking pix at the game tonight from our bench, I will post some when she uploads them. Tomorrow I am doing that StickTime with my goalie buddy whom is going to give me instruction. I will be bringing my GoPro, so I will put together another video to watch and learn from.

Thanks for this update BD. I was real curious as to the ability of the skaters. After the LTP clinic I took a few weeks ago they were pushing people to sign up for the rookie league despite the fact that, out of say 40 people, maybe 7 or 8 had any business playing any kind of organized game at that point. I don't want to sound cynical but it really seems like they just want to get people signed up and get the money, and then they sort of throw them out to the wolves with little to no direction or coaching. I know when you join the rookie league they also include a couple of coaching clinics, but there needs to be some basic instruction too, stuff you pointed out like positioning, etc. One of the big reasons I just want to get a little bit of clinic time under my belt.
Speaking of, did the first session of the LTP/Be a Player Clinic at TSC yesterday. Definitely a step up from the Anaheim LTP which was for true beginners. They combined the classes which I thought might happen since pretty much everyone there had basic skating and stick-handling ability. There were more than few guys right at my level, just starting out but could at least get up and down OK, but also quite a few experienced players who were much better than us too. We did several game drills which for me, highlighted the fact that I still need a lot of work in those situations, just moving around, transitioning, getting in position, that sort of thing. Fortunately have 6 more of these clinics to work on it.
I really wish I could just watch a bit of your rookie league game just to see how the action is but Lakewood is a bit out of the way for me just to drive out. Not sure how it works out there but I'm pretty sure they have a draft for the Anaheim league, meaning you won't get a team full of n00bs vs. a team full of ringers, it should be evenly matched up...theoretically anyway.

Two games yesterday. First one was a blast, had a couple of assists and even nailed a lob pass over the d's head to a streaking winger who caught it out of the air. Also got a PPG off a beautiful screen, goalie had no chance. We were up 4-1, blew the lead and then slowly drew away to win 4-7.
Second game was not as good, about 3 minutes in my skate kinda stuck in a rut when I was trying to move out of the way from a shot. Pulled/aggravated my abs/hip flexor. I could skate kinda ok after but a couple of times I tried to open up for a pass or a shot and my body was having none of that. Should have stopped playing because today not only is the original side injured but my other hip is letting me know it didn't appreciate all the compensation. Seems like I'm constantly dealing with a nagging groin now. Guess I get to keep doing my PT for even longer. Thankfully we won the game.

Isn't getting old just a blast? Hell even after skating I'm home with an ice pack on my knee and another on my shoulder. I don't dare skate without my knee brace now.

Played the first place team in my roller league last night. They beat us 12-5 first time we played them.
Down 2-1 at the end of one.
We scored six in the second, I had five of them. Up 7-2.
So of course we blew the lead. 7-7. Overtime. 3 minutes of 3 on 3.
I get the draw, the other team is just looking at me to give it up. They're just standing there.
I skate around the left D, he doesn't even touch me, goalie misses the poke check. Game over 15 seconds in. 8-7.
A great deal of puck luck involved.

I finally skated for the first time on Saturday since I broke my leg in December. I had a little sensitivity on the skin, but the leg didn't hurt at all. I skated for a bit myself and decided to take a few shifts in the pickup game on the other rink. The only pain I have is from when I fell on my hip. The damn ER doctor cut off my cup and my girdle, so I was a little under protected. Oh well... I talked with the guy who runs the league and he's made me eligible for the playoffs, which start next week. It's going to be an interesting weekend.

Just a side note question. The eyelet protectors in my graff skates came loose on a couple of my skate holes. Going to try and get to a shop in the next couple weeks. So far it's not bothering me but anyone have a feel for how many times might tear the boot? I don't care if I cut a lace but I definitely don't want to have to buy new skates.

Welp, got waxed last night...8-1 (we are now 0-2). Once again, the other team had 3 or 4 players that clearly were not "Rookie" level, and again I faced countless 2 on 0, 2 on 1 and at one point, a freaking 4 on 0!!! I'd honestly say I was responsible for 4 goals, 3 were bad 5-holes, where I didn't keep my stick down on the ice. The 4th one beat me low blocker side, was a tough one to try to get. The other goals were results of out numbered attacks where I made the first save, but then one of their players was left unattended to knock in the rebound on my far side. It got to the point where the non-rookie player would dangle through our entire team, enter the zone then wait for his teammate to enter and pass it to them. Overall though I felt I played much better, these clinics are really paying off. My wife even said I looked almost 100% better than I did the first time she watched me, which was only my 3rd time on the ice in my goalie gear...last night marked my 9th I believe.
My stance felt much better, I was lower in my butt squat, my hands were in the right spot, my back was straighter and my legs were wider. I have really been working on my lateral slides to the post from the top of the crease and made a few saves last night using those when faced with 2 on 1 or 2 on 0. There were a few times when I was lazy and got up on the wrong foot when recovering, luckily it didn't cost us a goal. All in all, I felt like I played much better this game than our first game. I'm trying not to worry about the score, but it does get frustrating when time after time a 2 on 0 is coming my way or when no one is there to pick up a rebound or an opponent after I make the initial save. And again, the refs told me that I did a great job on keeping my team in the game. I faced at least 25 shots this time, our team only had 10...I don't even think their goalie broke a sweat!

Those nights can be rough BD. Just stick with it and remember it's ice time. Also remember it's way better than being on the other side of it as a goalie when you're standing around for 40 of the 45 minutes and start getting bored.
Not sure if I'm happy or sad I had a stomach bug yesterday. Our team iced 5 skaters and then had to forfeit when one of them got tossed for having too many penalties.

If you are going lose because of not having enough players to fill normal positions then forfeit. Unless you absolutely know the game will be close.
Let the other teams ringers whine and cry about not being able to pad their stats.

We lost 3-1 yesterday but it felt like a victory to us! The team we played is full of 4th season "rookies", yeah, pretty comedy huh! First goal I gave up went off my blocker, then off the crossbar and landed in the crease behind me, I wasn't able to get to it before there guy who tapped it in. That was all for the first period, 2nd period was a 2 on 0, i got over in time but got beat 5-hole, 3rd goal was through traffic, I should have been further out, dropped down to butterfly, saw the puck come through the forest of legs, made a right pad save but was too deep and it bounced off my pad, then off the inside of the right post and in. 3rd period, no goals were given up.
Our team had a couple new players on it, both of which had experience and it made a WORLD of difference! For the first time (in 3 games) it actually felt like a game. The guys had some decent offensive zone possession and played their positions well. I didn't even care that we lost at all, I was more impressed with how well everyone played and the team morale was high as well.

We lost 3-2 last night in a shootout. First goal I gave up was a result of a bad line change and then the puck was on its own between the blue line and myself, an opponent was rushing in, i did the "should i go, should i not go" for about 2 seconds, i decided to go and try to poke check it and the guy barely beat me to it and shot it in. :( The next goal was again a bad line change, led to a 2 on 0, guy beat me glove side, I did get a piece of it though. The same guy that scored on me was the first shooter in the SO, I tracked the puck well as he tried to dangle me to my right, got my right pad down and pushed with my left foot, blocker was down too, somehow the puck rolled on its side around my toe and in. :( I stuffed their next shooter and none of our players managed to get one in, all 3 shot it right at their goalie.
Our team did much better this time around, last time we lost 8-1 to them, but we only had 7 skaters. Playing goalie has been eye opening and has brought the frustration level to a new high. If you play beer league, please thank your goalie many times throughout the game, I'm finding it to be a thankless position. Unless you have played it, you have no idea how hard they bust their asses to keep the team in the game.

no game this weekend but we had a really lame "practice" with a "coach" and shared the ice with another team in our league. me and the other goalie didnt do squat for the first 25 minutes or so with the drills. we just worked on stuff together and then eventually got some action in drills. we then scrimmaged for 10 minutes and then did shootouts for another 10 minutes. as a goalie shootouts suck after about the 5th consecutive person goes. it is just non stop rookies coming in on you. i began to not care and was half assing it after 5 minutes.
on a lighter note i got new leg pads last week and today was my second time using them. Reebok P4 pro pad. i also put on a cheater cage a few days ago, i love it! the pads are dope but are much different than my old Vaughn V3 Velocity 7500's. these are 33+2 and have a double internal break with no outer break, a stiffer pad for sure! they have more thigh rise than my Vaughns did so that is going to take a few more sessions to get used to. i have a ccm500 glove and blocker on the way to match the pads. ccm and reebok are the same co. so in my eyes they match!

Jeebuz christos Beedee new pads already? I'm thinking the wife is gonna rethink this stance.
Couple of updates on the hockey front. Played for the first time in over a month last week due to travel and had a nice little low level game to get back into things. The next day half way through a bottle of wine one of my hockey buds called me about doing an iron man tourney. 6 skater rosters, 3 v 3 (cross ice) 20 minute run time with penalty shots for infractions at the end. 7 games (min) starting at 9pm with the championship scheduled for 530am. The bottle was a bad influence so I said sure why not.
First time I ever tried one of these tourneys and after a week of reflection I've decided you either show up kinda drunk and hydrate-dehydrate yourself through it or you take the thing way too seriously. There were two levels Beginner and Advanced. We played advanced and there were 5 other teams. The beginner level had 12 and I'd say 4 of the teams looked beginner level. The only bummer we had was one of our teams was Gold B level and was taking this thing way too seriously (our area goes to gold a). They were 2 of our 4 losses. The rest of the teams were even enough, one group of really good skaters brought a really rough goalie to even things out and it did. They were also having a lot of fun.
The operation wasn't super professional but it wasn't a complete **** show. By 3am nobody was going back to their lockers and everyone was hanging out on the 2 sheets and chatting up everyone between games. Our last game I hit the absolute hockey wall. I had seen other players kinda stop playing and all the sudden I knew why. The difference was I was willing to go sit on the bench where the other guys wanted their ice time and were just absolute pylons out there. Amazing job by all the goalies to put up with a night like this considering we had at least two one hour breaks between games. We got knocked out in the semi (where we would have had to play the same gold B team for championship) in what may have been a strategic 7-6 loss, or we were all just ****ing tired.
In all I think its definitely one of those things to put on a hockey bucket list, not so sure I'll do another but if I was invited I'd probably do it again.

Haha Jammer, the deal on these pads was way too good to pass up. Clearance, plus an additional 20% off made them a no-brainer. Most of the new model year gear is rolling in so I had to act fast as these were selling quickly! They are a pro level pad so they will last a looooong time, especially since I play 1-2 times a week tops.
That is rad about the ironman tourney! I have always wanted to do one as as skater, but now as a goalie it seems extra brutal! I know Lakewood does one, but not sure when. I couldn't begin to imagine how beat I would be the following day or two. Did they have temporary boards set up for the cross-ice orientation? What were the scores of some of the games? I know it is virtually possible to score from anywhere in the cross ice configuration if the goalie is caught off guard.

The scores were surprisingly not as high as you'd imagine. There's a little bit of etiquette or at least there was to ours. There's no face offs or whistles so most players don't crash the net too hard and passing plays drive the majority of play. If a puck was near the goalie most guys would take a single poke if at all. They used soft boards to cordon off the 2 end zones of the nhl sized rink and ran 2 games simultaneously on that one while the olympic rink they encroached on the end zones a tad and ran 3 games at a time. That was actually worse because teams had to change from the bench so one team had a long change. On the NHL side we were all just hopping over the soft boards and standing in the middle so you could change from everywhere.
We won 3 games 5-4, lost 7-4, 7-1 (gold team), ????-0 (gold team again) and then 7-6. I think 4 of our games had to have the penalties shot at the end to confirm a winner. I will add that roughs/checks/boards were all auto ejection penalties. Only hooks and whatnot counted for PS's at the end. This was meant to be a shinny style tournament so there was not a lot of grit going on. The strategy is clearly just the ability to make in tight 5 foot passes, there's no breakways here. Also because of where the boards are you can't cycle so its all tape to tape for the most part.
As a goalie I'm not sure what you'd want to do if you got caught in a bad game. The one where the gold team wouldn't let up it was in part because our goalie wouldn't quit. They wanted to break him. The shots that were going in were ridiculous 5 foot out roofed to the corner backhands, not that they weren't getting little chip and chop plays on us cuz we couldn't keep up, but they were picking corners to score.

I think I came in yesterday during the shootout. That was a little odd, but I had a game on that rink right after and didn't have time to watch.
Also, I don't feel comfortable constantly looking at Marty St. Louis' quads laugh:

Woo we didn't get mercy'd last night! One of our goals for the season was to actually finish a game. So even though we still lost 5-8, we made it to the end and didn't feel like ****heads after. Woo!
(some ******* teams will finish us in like the first period... not cool!)

I was playing pickup last night and my right thigh pad from my pants fell out during play. Although it was funny and I got a good ribbing out of it. Skating the rest of the night without a thigh pad felt weird. I just didn't feel right. Also, I was hoping I didn't get tagged there with any crazy shots.

didnt sub today, forgot we had a practice at 3:50 today. it was a combo with another team, ran drills for 45 minutes or so then had a 20 minute scrimmage. our team has come a loooong way, im very proud of them. we had more offensive zone pressure than ever before today. i didnt give up any goals in tbe scrimmage and we scored two or three.

Sumbitch, pulled my other groin. We won the game so that was nice but this getting old **** sucks.
Game was a good one, were second place playing the first place tean. Very even, had the winning assist on a 2-1 where dman played me well so i tried to shoot off the goalies pad. Must have knuckled because the puck climbed over the goalies shoulder and my partner cleaned it up before the goalie could sweep it away

yeah getting old sucks... I played the game of my life last week hitting everything in sight. Tends to happen when the wife brings the kids to the game. But now my ankle hurts like hell and I jammed my finger somehow too.

There is something about when the kids come to the games that makes you try a lot harder.

Sorry to hear about all of the ailments. I can relate. Was sore all over yesterday after getting accidentally submarined by my own teammate, and flipping over. Good thing I'm so used to that.
Heal quickly, all!

we were up 1-0 somehow from the 2nd period until 6 minutes to go in the 3rd. i couldnt stop a 2 on 0 and they tied it up. 2 minutes later i made another save and the rebound squirted out to our defenseman who fanned twice in clearing it...which resulted in one of their players knocking it in as i recovered back to the puck. then a couple minutes later another scramble in front, puck going off many skates and then in...weak!
our team maybe had 5 shots on goal...the other goalie told me he was getting bored. i had around 23 or so on me, i loved being busy. just frustrating losing yet again...

Good news is I made it through back to back games and the groin appears to be just tired.
I hate to say I was going half speed but I was, didn't want to anger it. The result was 2 less than stellar games by me since mentally I was making decisions based on full speed abilities, which resulted in a lot of me being in the really wrong place.
Had a nice goal from the point wrist shot top corner disallowed due to an in the crease call in my first game. Refs had a hard time of it all game due to multiple extra curricular activities. They almost threw one of our players out for going into the other teams penalty box, thankfully cooler heads prevailed when they realized the players had just mixed up sticks post altercation. Once again, had the ref decided to actually call a couple of boards, or possibly give a 10 minute misconduct when a goalie got run....
In the second game at the higher level we avoided all the ****show thankfully. Other team scored a goal right off the opening faceoff in one of the clearest "we need a mulligan" episodes I'd ever scene. I think officially the scorekeeper got it at 8 seconds but that was at least 4 seconds after he realized there had been a goal. We battled back to take a 2-1 lead until they tied it on a complete crash bang chaos goal with 5 seconds to go. This was one of those ties that definitely felt like a loss. I was still happy to have played it though, after the first game I was questioning why I was in league play.
