Sundance Review: Kevin Smith's 'Yoga Hosers' With Lily-Rose Depp, Harley Quinn Smith, Johnny Depp, And More (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/sundance-review-kevin-smiths-yoga-hosers-with-lily-rose-depp-harley-quinn-smith-johnny-depp-and-more-20160125)

Not positive at all.

Nope. Pretty much across the board. Seen it described as a cartoon mixed with female clerks for stoners. Somehow, I am not sure the Sundance crowd was the right audience for this. Rob Zombie's 31, didn't fare much better in the few reviews I have seen so far. Two directors making movies for themselves and their fans...**** the critics.

Kevin Smith Isn’t Making Movies for Audiences Anymore, Reveals Crazy Ending to ‘Moose Jaws’
http://www.slashfilm.com/new-details-on-the-kevin-smith-moose-jaws-movie-more/#more-336621

“I used to want to make movies for audiences. But if you’ve seen Tusk, and after you’ve seen Yoga Hosers, you’ll see that I really don’t give a **** about the audience anymore.”

After posting about this online, many people have taken it as something incendiary towards the people who go to see his movies. However, his position is really one that a lot of filmmakers should have. Smith isn’t saying that he doesn’t want the audience to enjoy the movie or that he’s purposely making movies that they won’t like (though some would disagree with the latter), but he’s simply making the movies that he wants to make...

...Anyway, kudos to Smith for simply making the kind of movies he wants. If his fans or other audiences like them, then that’s a bonus. But if he can make a living writing and directing the kind of movies he wants to see without any interference from a studio or second-guessing himself as to whether this is is something the audience will enjoy, then it sounds like he’s got it made.

Like I said.

Kevin Smith Talks Moose Jaws; Mr. Tusk Will Appear
http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/148530/148530/

At Sundance’s Deadline Hollywood panel (video below) this week, Smith spoke a bit about the upcoming film, spoiling a fun little scene that will connect Tusk to Moose Jaws.

“Justin [Long] returns as Tusk,” Smith revealed, “and he fights Moose Jaws.”

“I love Jaws, I love Canada, and I combined the two of them,” he elaborated. “So the whole thing is beat-for-beat Jaws, up until the third act. In the third act it becomes Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, and ends with Return of the Jedi. It’s pretty magical.”

Please don’t ever stop being a crazy sumbitch, sir.

New Pictures, Posters, And TV Spots For John Hillcoat's Star-Studded 'Triple 9' (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/new-pictures-posters-and-tv-spots-for-john-hillcoats-star-studded-triple-9-20160201)

Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Clifton Collins, Jr., Michael K. Williams, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, and Gal Gadot — those are some of the reasons why "Triple 9" landed on our 12 Films To See In February list. Not to mention that it's directed by John Hillcoat ("The Proposition," "The Road"). And today comes our biggest look yet at the movie.

Very nice.

Review: Coen Brothers' 'Hail, Caesar!' Starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton, And More (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/review-coen-brothers-hail-caesar-starring-josh-brolin-george-clooney-scarlett-johansson-tilda-swinton-and-more-20160203)

Working in a madcap vein most closely aligned with that of “The Hudsucker Proxy” and “Burn After Reading,” the Coens’ latest suffers from a narrative that, plot-wise, is so all over the place, it often feels like its operating on pure adrenalized instinct rather than following a carefully laid-out plan. Such impressions, however, are a byproduct of the frenzied pace at which this tale proceeds, as beneath the film's zippy tongue-in-cheek farce lurks a more incisive, self-conscious portrait of the industry as the producer of artful commodities which, at their finest, operate as make-believe entertainments with the power to thrill, amuse and inspire.[B]

Perhaps there’s a longer cut out there where all these people got fleshed out. And perhaps that cut led to a film that felt like it was actually about something. Instead, we get empty genre tropes going through motions without much of a theme to show for it. For hardcore fans of the cop-movie genre starved for material, maybe that’ll be enough. The rest of us will likely leave the movie feeling like an opportunity was missed somewhere. [C]

Well, that's disappointing. Currently 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Zack Snyder Wants to Make a Movie about George Washington in the Style of ‘300’
http://collider.com/zack-snyder-george-washington-movie-300/

He has a picture in his office of the Revolutionary War hero crossing the icy Delaware on his way to decimate the British in the Battle of Trenton. “We were talking about it,” Snyder says. “The first thing we asked was, well, how are we going to make it look? I pointed at this painting. It looks like 300. It’s not that hard.”

This is...HISTORY!!!!!!

And that’s Snyder in a nutshell: take the artistry of someone else and find a way to translate it to motion pictures. I sometimes honestly wonder if Sndyer would still have become a phenomenon and credited as a visual wunderkind if he wasn’t standing on the shoulders of Frank Miller or Dave Gibbons. What’s the line between inspiration for Snyder and wholesale using someone else’s framing, color palette, etc. and then translating it from a 2D to a 3D medium? Does it matter?

Wow. Collider with yet another unbiased reporting of the news. Hacks.

In Defense of Kevin Smith’s ‘Tusk’
http://bloody-disgusting.com/editorials/3378731/in-defense-of-tusk/

It’s no secret that hating on Kevin Smith seems to be the cool thing to do nowadays (even more cool than hating Eli Roth). Many of his “fans” claim he hasn’t made a legitimately good movie since Chasing Amy in 1997. I would argue that Dogma, Clerks II and Zack and Miri Make a Porno are all winners, but what do I know? Hell, I even like certain things about Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Jersey Girl (it’s really not that bad).

Michael Mann Plotting 'Heat' Prequel Novel (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/michael-mann-plotting-heat-prequel-novel-20160316)

Deadline reports that the director is launching Michael Mann Books, which, as the title suggests, will be a company dedicated to the printed word. And one of the first projects in the works is a prequel novel to "Heat," one that will focus on the early years of the characters in the film including Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), and Nate (Jon Voight), and presumably establish even more of their histories together.

There's no word yet on who will exactly write the book, but the idea is that Michael Mann Books will have a crew of scribes on hand who will both tackle novels and develop concepts for movies and television. So yes, a prequel film or TV series to "Heat" is certainly a possibility.

‘In Bruges’ Director Martin McDonagh Adds Peter Dinklage and More to His Next Film (http://www.slashfilm.com/martin-mcdonagh-casts-peter-dinklage/)

It’s no wonder, then, that top-notch stars seem to be lining up around the block to star in his next film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. But that doesn’t mean it’s not impressive. Frances McDormand was locked in at the lead last fall, and since then Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Abbie Cornish, and Caleb Landry Jones have also signed on. Now you can add Peter Dinklage, John Hawkes, and Lucas Hedges to the growing list of top-notch talents.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which McDonagh also wrote, follows a mother (McDormand) whose daughter has been murdered. Furious that the local police seem more interested in persecuting black people than in finding the killer, she sparks a public dispute with them, taking out three billboards criticizing them for their inaction.

Harrelson will play the sheriff, Cornish is his wife, and Rockwell is Harrelson’s hotheaded prot?g?. All three previously worked with McDormand on Seven Psychopaths. Jones plays the billboard salesman. Moving on to the new cast members, Hedges has been cast as McDormand’s son, Hawkes is her ex-husband, and Dinklage is a local man who has a crush on her.

James Cameron on ‘Avatar’ Sequels: Plans to Shoot All Four Sequels Concurrently
http://collider.com/james-cameron-avatar-2-sequels-star-wars/

“If I could do the Alien Queen today with the techniques we used on AVATAR, she’d be spectacular. She’d be much more dynamic. Now, where I would struggle is to make her as texturally real. But that’s all doable now. … On the new AVATAR films, I’m actually going to shoot more real-world stuff. It may only be there as an example from which we then generate CG, or we may actually integrate some of those photographic elements. But I want more photography. … Like, if I was doing the Alien Queen, I would want photography to show the exact way that the slime drools off the curl of a lip and caught the light in a certain type of very low-key lighting. I would want to see that so that I can talk to the CG artist and say, ‘All right. Do that.’ … It always usually boils down to the lighting and the conception of the shot.”

The 'depraved' 'Neon Demon' got booed at Cannes and now I want to see it more

"Totally off the boil"? "Completely cuckoo"? "Slick with blood and glitter paint"? "Descent into supermodel hell"? Count me in! The few formal reviews published so far have been similarly enticing, with Variety's Owen Gleiberman stating in his altogether mixed assessment: "Beauty mingles with mangled flesh, and each fastidiously slick image seems to have come out of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me or The Shining or a very sick version of a Calvin Klein commercial." Telegraph critic Robbie Collin, meanwhile, called it "depraved" (and not necessarily in a bad way).

For all I know, The Neon Demon will enrage me just as much as it did that Spanish heckler, but I'm all right with that. As much as Refn's last film Only God Forgives confounded me and occasionally tested my patience, there are moments and scenes (particularly one scene) that have burrowed themselves deeply into my psyche. Refn imbued that film with a dreamlike, often nightmarish, quality that I haven't managed to completely shake, and I'll take that feeling over the dispensable buzz of a serviceable-but-unimaginative crowd-pleaser like The Conjuring any day of the week. The horror genre is supposed to be transgressive, and we need more movies like The Neon Demon -- hecklers be damned.

Considering directors to put in the quiz thread started me wondering who are the notable auteurs of today? When considering an impressive directorial oeuvre, the same names from 20, 30, 40 or more years ago are still the ones that come first to mind. Maybe Fincher is the newest that comes to my mind, but there have to be also some even newer directors starting to put together an important body of work, yes?

Here's a brief article with an interesting perspective that eschews such a search…

Death of the auteur (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2007/apr/20/johnpatterson)

The "auteurs" are still out there, but most of them bore me. Don't get me wrong: directors all have their moments here and there. It's just that I can't be bothered to wait around for them any more.

Instead, I've been seeking out other ways to discern great bodies of work united by a single, non-directorial figure, but not necessarily dominated by them. I think of someone like Charlie Kaufman, who is far more the auteur than the relatively characterless directors who have so far brought his scripts to life on screen. Or the German cinematographer Robby M?ller, whose silvery palette unites films as diverse as Kings of the Road, Repo Man and Dead Man. Right now I'm keeping a weather eye out for anything shot by Emmanuel Lubezki, who lensed Ali, The New World and Children of Men, more than enough evidence of quasi-authorship for me.

well, haven't seen Following or Interstellar...so I can't judge. Memento would probably be 1. Insomnia might have fared a little better in my rankings. And Batman Begins would have dropped to the very bottom. That movie is intensely boring and overlong by at least half a movie. But that's his style ain't it? Might have flipped Prestige and Inception. Inception was solid until it became a James Bond flick. He almost had me on that one.

Memento

Inception
Insomnia

Batman Begins

J.J. Abrams & Meryl Streep Team Up for TV Adaptation of ‘The Nix’
http://collider.com/jj-abrams-meryl-streep-the-nix-tv-series/

Here’s the book synopsis for The Nix via Amazon:

A Nix can take many forms. In Norwegian folklore, it is a spirit who sometimes appears as a white horse that steals children away. In Nathan Hill’s remarkable first novel, a Nix is anything you love that one day disappears, taking with it a piece of your heart.

It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart. Which version of his mother is true? Two facts are certain: she’s facing some serious charges, and she needs Samuel’s help.

To save her, Samuel will have to embark on his own journey, uncovering long-buried secrets about the woman he thought he knew, secrets that stretch across generations and have their origin all the way back in Norway, home of the mysterious Nix. As he does so, Samuel will confront not only Faye’s losses but also his own lost love, and will relearn everything he thought he knew about his mother, and himself.

From the suburban Midwest to New York City to the 1968 riots that rocked Chicago and beyond, The Nix explores—with sharp humor and a fierce tenderness—the resilience of love and home, even in times of radical change.

Technology and visuals aside, the preview I saw felt like a Lifetime movie. I was very confused to see the name Ang Lee, that title, and the football game cheese. I immediately thought,"Total Flop". No comprendo.

http://collider.com/scarface-remake-coen-brothers/

That's actually got me interested.

Update: THR reports that Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie and Patriot’s Day director Peter Berg are in talks with Universal to helm Scarface. The write-up has some interesting backstory on Mackenzie and Berg’s relationship to the studio and to each other, but for me, the more interesting story is what we’re going to get from a Scarface retelling scripted by the Coens and directed by either Mackenzie, who made a big splash recently with his Neo-Western, or Berg, whose last outing our own Perri Nemiroff said “isn’t an easy watch, but it’s a necessary one – perhaps now more so than ever.” It’s unfortunate that we can’t get both versions!

what steaming pile of $%$^!

Around 12 minutes of dialogue in a 2-hr movie and the sound track is a constant hum from a cello or bass. - srsly -

My expectations really weren't that high, yet Dunkirk was much worse. After 45 minutes in, it was pure torture.

I was looking for something along the lines of Saving Private Ryan, but I got Stripes instead (which I should have just stayed at home and watched)

And the funny thing is I really didn't learn anything about Dunkirk that I didn't already know. No quick narrative / stats at the end of the movie.

Serious waste of time!

My two cents (Nolan fanboy)

Saw it tonight in IMAX. I've said before that I'm not much of a war movie buff and this was the least I've ever looked forward to a Nolan film. Overall, it's not my favorite movie of his but I think as far as the filmmaking craft goes, this was top notch. The lack of dialogue and character development was the intent of the movie and totally different from what he normally does. It's borderline a silent movie. We've seen dozens of war movies where characters' back stories are told and we see their loved ones waiting for them at home but in this, you really get a sense of the lack of identity in a group of 400,000 soldiers. They are not individuals anymore and what we see on screen happening to one person, could be happening to any one of them at any given time. Even a relatively mundane task has a sort of tension to it because not only do you not know when the next attack will be, but that mundane task could also kill you in those conditions. There's a randomness to it that I think was done very well. And not knowing all the details and strategies of the battle itself puts you in the shoes of the soldiers. They would have had very little knowledge themselves. They're not in the war room, strategizing. Nolan wanted to make this an immersive experience and I think he did that.

Easily the best IMAX film in years... or possibly even ever? Technical question though... why was the remaining ~5% of the movie not shot in IMAX?

Easily the best IMAX film in years... or possibly even ever? Technical question though... why was the remaining ~5% of the movie not shot in IMAX?

IMAX cameras are noisy so if there's a lot of dialogue in a scene, the camera noise will get in the way. With the exception of quick shouts and one or two word comments. Since there's so little dialogue in the movie, this is the first time Nolan was able to shoot nearly all of the movie that way.

July 24th, 2017, 06:21 PM
I think immersive is a great description for Dunkirk. And IMAX is definitely the way to go to see it. Beautiful and gripping movie, though I don't think all of Nolan's devices work.

It falls short of being the best movie of the year by a wide berth, but I liked it.

And for me, Pacific Rim is still the most "must see in IMAX" movie of recent years. Although, Pac Rim I will still watch in any format. I don't necessarily need to see Dunkirk again.

I may have to start using the term 'Dunkirk loud' now, because it was definitely the loudest movie I've ever seen. As silly as it sounds, I felt shell-shocked for an hour or two afterwards and that was sitting in the back row at IMAX.

‘mother!’ Review: Resting WTF Face | Venice 2017
http://collider.com/mother-review-jennifer-lawrence/#poster

mother! isn’t quite as fascinating as it thinks it is, and the hellish setting perhaps goes too far, but it is relentless and it sure is something that needs to be experienced. The camera work and sound work alone is revelatory. It’s extremely adventurous and is willingly open to both praise and snickers. What was fascinating, for me, was how the audience I saw it with reacted so primal, not too different from the freakish audience in the movie. I was surrounded by shrieks, yawns, laughter, smiles and a man who yelled “**** you” at the screen as soon as the credits started. You’ll either get something you want from mother! or you’ll feel like you were robbed. You’ll leave the theater spit out into the world with a spinning head and an itch to assemble the puzzle. And I think that’s pretty exciting for the current studio climate. Nothing is safe about mother! And that’s thrilling for an artist like Aronofsky.

David Lynch Teamed Up With Brewers To Make Some ‘Damn Good’ Beer
http://uproxx.com/life/david-lynch-twin-peaks-beer/

The collaboration went beyond brewing the beer — Lynch and Mikkeller also worked together on original art that Lynch drew himself and shared with the brewers along with a color palette and aesthetic lifted straight from Lynch’s now-legendary TV series, Twin Peaks.

According to Mikkeller’s press release, the beer is only going to be available for a very limited run in California. It will premiere at Lynch’s Festival of Disruption, which a press release says, “focuses on music, art, film and meditation.” And, now beer too. If you’re in Los Angeles this weekend, you can attend the festival and sample the beer (and collect the gorgeous cans) while listening to The Kills and TV On The Radio. The beer will then go on a limited run in a few markets around the state.

couldn't agree more. I was one of those video store 'salesmen', and I had a pretty good record when it came to knowing what to recommend to who.

Kevin Smith Has Suffered A ‘Massive Heart Attack’
https://uproxx.com/movies/kevin-smith-heart-attack/

After the first show this evening, I had a massive heart attack. The Doctor who saved my life told me I had 100% blockage of my LAD artery (aka “the Widow-Maker”). If I hadn’t canceled show 2 to go to the hospital, I would’ve died tonight. But for now, I’m still above ground! pic.twitter.com/M5gSnW9E5h

Kevin Smith Says He Is ‘Living on Borrowed Time’ Following His ‘Massive Heart Attack’
http://letsgokings.com/showthread.php/462404-All-Things-Directors/page74

The interview with Ralph Garman on his Ralph Report podcast is an eye-opener and offers a sobering take on Smith’s outlook on life.

As he tells the host, Smith says that his survival from the heart attack and the “100% blockage” of his LAD artery left him thinking about what happens next:

“I don’t want to say I feel like a dead man walking, but I do feel like I’m not supposed to be here anymore, and it doesn’t make me want to leave, but it makes me appreciate how … like, all right, let’s do everything,” Smith told Garman, a longtime friend of the director with whom he co-hosts the Hollywood Babble-On podcast.

He told a story about how his dad was close to death and then made a miraculous recovery and lived two months longer — “on borrowed time” — which he himself now feels like he’s living.

“I was supposed to be dead in that room, no doubt,” Smith said, noting how lucky he was that he wasn’t traveling at the time and able to get to a hospital quickly enough for doctors to save him.

You can't go through something like that and just shrug it off. :(

I am wishing him the best of luck.
