Okay so this is a Stephen King thread. I'm a huge fan. The Dark Tower series of novels and how it's going to be brought to either the big screen, the small screen, or a combination of the two. Last I heard, Ron Howard has the go on doing something with it, but what I'd really love to see is how Peter Jackson would do it. His epic Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit movies are just awesome. Either Peter Jackson, or bring The Dark Tower to HBO like Game of Thrones. That would be sweet.

Hulu Gives Bad Robot's 11/22/63 a Direct-to-Series Order (http://collider.com/11-22-63-hulu/)

Hulu made the announcement today, making this Hulu and WBTV’s very first original programming collaboration. Abrams, King, Carpenter and Bryan Burk will all executive produce. Here’s what Abrams had to say about the project:
“I’ve been a fan of Stephen King since I was in junior high school. The chance to work with him at all, let alone on a story so compelling, emotional and imaginative, is a dream. We are thrilled to be working with Hulu on this very special project.”
And here’s what King added:
“If I ever wrote a book that cries out for long-form, event TV programming, 11/22/63 is it. I’m excited that it’s going to happen, and am looking forward to working with J.J. Abrams and the whole Bad Robot team.”
There’s no word on when the series will go into production or when it will be released, but Hulu will handle domestic distribution while Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution unleashes it overseas.
Here’s the synopsis of 11/22/63:
Based upon the best-selling 2011 novel written by King and published by Scribner, 11/22/63 is a thriller in which high school English teacher Jake Epping travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. But his mission is threatened by Lee Harvey Oswald, his falling in love and the past itself … which doesn’t want to be changed.

Ok Roenick and all who read this...they BETTER get the chick from Game of Thrones for the female lead. PERIOD.

As brilliant as the first 95% of The Stand is, people would just looooove to spend years watching eight hours of movies only to get to that ending. Hopefully they can get Stephen King to come up with something else, but the most recent book of his I read was Under The Dome, which has an even worse ending.

http://collider.com/james-franco-stephen-king-hulu-11-22-63/

OOOF. Nothing against Franco...I don't say this based on his qualifications...but this is about as miscast as possible. When I read the book I saw someone much older. And a little less looks friendly. Timothy Olyphant is gonna be out of work soon. He is still too pretty but would have been much more in line with the character. And the chick from Game of Thrones(Gwendolyne Christie?) would have been right for the female lead, but not opposite either one of those. MISCAST.

s we previously reported, Ron Howard, who was long attached to the adaptation, decided to drop out, and now Deadline is reporting that The Dark Tower is looking to hire A Royal Affair director Nikolaj Arcel for the gig. Per Deadline, “taught himself to speak and read English in order to consume Stephen King’s books in the writer’s native tongue. Arcel is a huge fan of The Dark Tower and knows the series well. That impressed the studio, and he showed with the [Swedish version] Dragon Tattoo that he could go dark, which is important in this series, a mix of horror and fantasy.”

Stephen King’s ‘It’ Remake Has Found A New Director
http://uproxx.com/movies/2015/07/stephen-king-it-andy-muschietti-remake-director/

After Cary Fukunaga dropped out of helming the remake of Stephen King’s IT, fans of the book — and that cheesy (yet creepy) TV mini-series from the ’90s — began once again speculating about the possible future of the project. Today, THR reported on Fukunaga’s replacement being lined up by New Line Cinema and it looks like the production will move forward with Andy Muschietti behind the camera.

Muschietti made his directorial debut with 2013’s horror hit Mama, which starred Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. The two-part movie adaptation of Stephen King’s classic was supposed to begin production in late June but due to this shakeup, a new start date is unknown as of yet. Now that a new director is in place, New Line will begin looking for a new writer to come in and overhaul the script to fit Muschietti’s vision.

Hurm. I wish the new guy the best. No offense. But it's a solid dropoff. Looked like Mama was visually solid but the majority of the complaining was story telling(I didn't see it). Maybe he's well rounded...but the resume don't say that. It says he is a horror director. And Fukanaga was everything but. It had the chance to be more than just the horror part of the story. Man, the studios cheaping out is costing us good movies.

The 'Pet Sematary' remake is sounding a lot better than the original movie
http://www.hitfix.com/the-dartboard/will-the-pet-sematary-remake-finally-give-fans-the-adaptation-they-deserve

While I agree there is room for improvement, I like the original. Fred Gwynne "sometimes dead is betteh" f'rinstance.

And yet for fans of the original novel there is hope for a more satisfying adaption of the story looming on the horizon, courtesy of director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (who helmed the shockingly excellent 2007 sequel "28 Weeks Later") and screenwriter Jeff Buhler ("Midnight Meat Train"). In a recent interview with horror blog Dread Central, Buhler took a few minutes out to discuss the upcoming re-adaptation, during which the scribe echoed a lot of my sentiments in discussing their more humanistic approach to the story:

“This is pretty far from the 1980’s film, which I adore for certain things that are very intrinsic to that time period in terms of the genre, like a truck driver smoking a joint to a Ramones song. But when a little kid comes back with a scalpel and is like, ‘I want to play with you,’ it kind of becomes Chucky. With this one, we really wanted to get into the emotional aspects of it. There’s still plenty of visceral horror that’s explored, but I’ve always felt that if you lean more into the characters and into their emotional lives, when the visceral **** hits the fan, it’s ten times more scary.”

I really wish I could be optimistic about this, but Franco, no fault of his, is just not what I envisioned for the character. That was the last book I have read in a while where I visually pegged the characters so explicitly in my mind. I will try to get past that when this finally comes out.

More Details On Why Fukunaga Exited ‘It’ Remake Emerge
http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3359996/details-fukunaga-exited-remake-emerge/

Now, Fukunaga explains to Variety in greater detail precisely why he no longer wanted to be a part of the remake:

I was trying to make an unconventional horror film. It didn’t fit into the algorithm of what they knew they could spend and make money back on based on not offending their standard genre audience. Our budget was perfectly fine. …It was the creative that we were really battling. It was two movies. They didn’t care about that. In the first movie, what I was trying to do was an elevated horror film with actual characters. They didn’t want any characters. They wanted archetypes and scares. I wrote the script. They wanted me to make a much more inoffensive, conventional script. But I don’t think you can do proper Stephen King and make it inoffensive.

The main difference was making Pennywise more than just the clown. After 30 years of villains that could read the emotional minds of characters and scare them, trying to find really sadistic and intelligent ways he scares children, and also the children had real lives prior to being scared. And all that character work takes time. It’s a slow build, but it’s worth it, especially by the second film. But definitely even in the first film, it pays off.

We invested years and so much anecdotal storytelling in it. Chase and I both put our childhood in that story. So our biggest fear was they were going to take our script and bastardize it. So I’m actually thankful that they are going to rewrite the script. I wouldn’t want them to stealing our childhood memories and using that. I mean, I’m not sure if the fans would have liked what I would had done. I was honoring King’s spirit of it, but I needed to update it. King saw an earlier draft and liked it.

It would appear Chris Cooper's character(the guy who owns the diner) is beefed up some too. Probably to supply exposition that they needed to transfer over from the book. I still am not on board with the casting. I think not getting Gwendolyn Christie for the female lead was a borderline tragedy. And Franco skews WAYYYYYY younger than the character in the book reads. Jon Hamm maybe??? But the reviews seem to support their choices. I have a feeling, like most King adaptations, it's gonna go off the page a bit. Not necessarily bad, just different.

Read more at http://www.hitfix.com/harpy/the-dark-tower-may-have-found-its-female-lead-but-there-might-be-a-problem#s6Co3JfByJyKFjF2.99

The Deadline report states Lee is in talks to play “Tirana.” That name may be familiar to book readers as a MINOR character from the last novel. Definitely not someone who would be the lead. So why that name? Perhaps because “Susan” sounds suspiciously like “Susannah” and if there’s anything Hollywood hates, it’s characters with similar sounding names. Case in point? Game of Thrones Asha became Yara for the HBO show because her original name was too close to Osha.

If The Dark Tower plays out in chronological order, the film may begin not with a desert chase but with Roland in happier times, with his wife Susan. It is a traditional — if tired — trope to inflict pain on a woman to kickstart a man’s journey. Susan is even described as having blonde hair…which Lee has in spades.

I watched the first two episodes last night. It's fine. If you liked the book, it'll feel familiar. I've got a couple of issues with things, but like I said to jd yesterday about it, with only 8 episodes they're going to have to leave some things out. So, I'm just taking it for what it is, rather than what I want it to be. They should have done it over two seasons (pre and post Dallas), but that doesn't seem to be what they're going to do.

I will agree with this sentiment. The wife and I watched the first episode and we will watch the second tonight. We agreed there was something off in the first episode but we want to see how the show ends up. We both thought that some changes would be needed from the original text due to time constraints but some changes have just done away with good parts of the book. But King is an Executive Producer so he was agreeable. And talking about Jame Franco - he is a good Jake.

I just hate it. I have nothing against Franco...but the male lead should have been older, and Gwendolyn Christie should have been the female lead. I mean, for f's sake...King's description of her is so visually obvious. I can't get past that.
That being said, Chris Cooper is in it. And that can't be a bad thing.

We have watched three episodes so far. Fair to say they have completely changed much of the basic tenet. And not always for the best but I understand that this is sometimes necessary to get our favorite stories onto the visual medium. The problems as you note are accurate though. King's narrative is so strong. As an example Sadie's actress, while as beautiful as I imagined, is probably 5'2". That isn't Sadie. Regarding Franco I actually like him in the role. Josh Duhamel as Frank Dunning was spot on also but they changed that story dramatically.

I guess it is like David Lynch's Dune, we just had to be as happy as possible to at least see on the screen what we had always only imagined.

Starring Idris Elba as The Gunslinger, a.k.a. Roland Deschain, and Matthew McConaughey as The Man in Black, The Dark Tower has had a tumultuous development process, but things are finally coming together. Sony recently moved the film from January 2017 to February 2017, and recently added Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) is one of the latest to join the cast as Sayre, the menacing vampire leader, but today brings word of the addition of newcomer Fran Kranz. According to THR, the Cabin in the Woods actor will take the role of Pimli, The Man in Black’s righthand man.

New Line’s Adaptation Of Stephen King’s ‘It’ Has Found Its Clown
http://uproxx.com/movies/stephen-kings-it-pennywise-bill-skarsgard/

Hemlock Grove‘s Bill Skarsg?rd (yes he’s one of those Skarsg?rds) has been tapped to play the iconic character in the upcoming big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s It. It’s not the first time this role has been cast, mind you. Will Poulter, who you may know best as the lovable doofus Kenny in We’re The Millers, was originally given the role back in May 2015, but would exit the project after creative differences prompted original director Cary Fukunaga to leave and there needed to be a search for someone new to helm It. The studio was said to be pushing for young talent to play Pennywise, so Skarsg?rd has this film continuing to tick that box.

Mama director Andy Muschietti was installed as Fukunaga’s replacement last summer, and just like the 1990 miniseries, It will be split into two parts. In February, producer Roy Lee confirmed the films will be rated R and will respect facets of King’s novel.

If you have watched Stranger Things, you know how tragic this is...

There Wouldn’t Be A ‘Stranger Things’ Without Pennywise The Clown From ‘It’
http://uproxx.com/tv/stranger-things-it-stephen-king/

Co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer told the Hollywood Reporter they requested to direct the It remake, long before director Andr?s Muschietti was attached. “We asked, and that’s why we ended up doing [Stranger Things], because we’d asked Warner Brothers,” Matt said. “I was like, ‘Please,’ and they were like, ‘No.’ This was before Cary Fukunaga. This was a long time ago.” As Ross explains it:

When we asked to do it was before, then he got on it afterwards because he’s established. So, he got on it and we were excited just because we’re huge fans of what he does, and one of the few people who hasn’t made a bad movie. So, that was exciting to us, but also, we were seeing trailers for True Detective, we’re like, “I kind of want to see. How do you do It in two hours? Even if you’re separating the kids, how do you do that right?” You don’t really fall in love with them the same way you’re going to when I read that book. So, how much more excited would I be if Cary Fukunaga was doing that for HBO or he was doing that for Netflix? (Via)

‘It’: New Image Released along with Details from Director Andr?s Muschietti
http://collider.com/it-remake-image-pennywise/#bill-skarsgard

That’s Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) sticking his head out of a sewer pipe. It looks silly. That seems to be the dynamic that It is operating under at the moment: the scarier it tries to look, the more ridiculous it appears. To be fair, so much of horror cinema’s power comes from the moving image rather than stills. There can be safety in a still image, and also, when dealing with promotional material, you don’t want to give away any of your big scares.

Of course, according to Muschietti, what makes Pennywise a powerful villain is that he has nothing to hide. “Pennywise shows up, he’s front and center, and he does his show. He has an act,” Muschietti says. “So it’s weird all the time, and every little thing implies a further threat.” I’m not exactly sure what to expect from It, but if his act includes “Poking my head out of sewer pipes,” that doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

Kinda how I am feeling so far about it. The frilly costume is seriously deriding any attempts to be scary.

It's an interesting trailer. The source material, from what I have read, is being approached from a very unique point. It's kinda an alternate take, which is conceivable if you have read the books. Maybe that was the only way to approach, since so much emphasis was put on how the rest of the story would be told. This way they open the door, anchored by two charismatic leads, and if it works...they can go a bunch of different ways with it. I have a bit of a 'purist' streak, and I LOVE The DT books and King very much...but I am open to this interpretation.

Then word broke that the film is a breezy hour and a half long. For a saga that has bested would-be directors from J.J. Abrams to Howard, that’s not a lot of time to cram in Stephen King’s decades-long saga. Lastly, the studio has not allowed any press screenings for critics … which is never a good sign.

IT is a great book. Dark Tower Series is great. Originally read the series starting on book two. I am rereading the series currently as I haven't read some of these in over 20-25 years so forgot a lot of detail specially from books 2-4 and 1 was new to me. Was one of those really pissed off at SK when he wrote the afterword about not continuing after book 3. Originally didn't like book 4 as it did not progress the storyline. However rereading I thinking it might be the best. This series also got me to read Salems Lot and Insomnia so I could understand the backstory to those characters more. Again hope that somehow they do right by the DT series when they put it on screen.

If you haven't read The Stand - do yourself a favor and read it. I think it is his best story and I very much like It, The Shining, 11/24/63 and the Dark Tower. The Stand has it all but as with most of his books the ending is somewhat lacking as he usually struggles there ...

Definitely have read The Stand. One of my all time favorite books from any author. 11/24/63 was another good read. Have never read the shining. Sometimes it's hard to have interest in a book after I have seen the movie specially as iconic as the movie The Shining.

I haven't been paying attention to many of King's latest works (think: the last ten years), but I really like the premise of 11/24/63 and I want to read it.

You should read The Shining. It gives an insight into why King doesn't like the film. It's not so much changes in plot points, but the overall tone of the book and how Torrance is characterized. But yeah, I like the ending of the movie more. Endings are an issue for King, huh? ;)

I am one of those weirdos who reads about town. So during the last two weeks, people have seen me reading IT at the park, mall, what have you, and several have started conversations about the upcoming movie. WARNING SPOILERS

Saw IT last night and as an avid fan of the book was very satisfied with the movie. As anyone who read the book knows it is very, very detailed and I would imagine extremely difficult to adapt to a 2-hour movie so in that sense I think they did a magnificent job of adapting the story and making a great movie. I loved that they found such a strong Beverly actress and stuck so closely with her story line from the book. The sorrow I felt with Georgie's death in the opening sequence of the book was expertly adapted in the movie and they captured Pennywise's charm and persuasiveness so well - and Bill Skaarsgard did this role great - so the movie was a success. The dread that Derry led every reader, the general sorrow and fright in that city was adapted well and established as well. I also liked how they teased Pennywise's true form at the end when he was trying to attack Mike on the ground and did anyone else think he was dying to show them his true form when his forehead was coming apart? Downsides - Mike's reduction as a character and Ben not being the engineer but librarian - didn't like this at all. Still very interested in seeing how they adapt Chapter 2.

Overall an amazing effort for those of us fans of the book with this film. As a reader if you were not satisfied with how your imagined vision came through I think your expectations are too high.

So excited to see that they have stuck closely as possible to the source material. The casting has been outstanding and the teases they have given us in trailers makes this straight up a very optimistic view of this!

This was such an odd, melancholy book. It's only a sequel to the Shining in the most tenuous of ways. Looking forward to see how they translate the solitude and closed world feel that I remember the book had. Not exactly cinematic.

Actually, yes, I think I want to see Lizzie Caplan as Annie Wilkes.
