Legendary character actor - and former Mr. Freeze - Eli Wallach dies at 98 | Blastr (http://www.blastr.com/2014-6-25/legendary-character-actor-and-former-mr-freeze-eli-wallach-dies-98)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQIgIJWXxSU

For sci-fi fans of a certain age, however, Wallach will always be most remembered for his turn as Doctor Schivel, aka Mr. Freeze, in the Adam West-starring camp classic TV series Batman. Wallach was the third man to take up Freeze's icy mantle after George Sanders and Otto Preminger, but his work certainly made an impression -- the actor famously remarked that he got more fan mail for his two-episode ("Ice Spy"/"The Duo Defy") appearance in the show than for anything else he'd ever done.

I knew the name, face and movies but he wasn't really on my radar until I saw him in a chick flick (The Holiday). I really liked his story line. A screen writer from the golden era of movies (1930s/40s) talking about those days. I had to look him up because usually people are younger playing older characters. I was surprised to see that he was actually old enough to work during that era. I thought that was cool.

A conversation from the movie.

Eli: Did you know that Cary Grant was from Surrey (England)?
Her: Why yes I did. How did you know that?
Eli: He told me.

The look on her face was priceless.

RIP Eli.

Spanish Actor Alex Angulo Dead At 61 | Twitch (http://twitchfilm.com/2014/07/spanish-actor-alex-angulo-dead-at-61.html)

?lex Angulo, star of films such as The Day of the Beast, Live Flesh, and Pan's Labyrinth, has died in a traffic accident in his native Spain. Likely best known to film audiences through his work with ?lex de la Iglesia, this is a tremendous loss for Spanish cinema.

While mainly known as a comic actor, he will also be remembered for a dramatic and vital turn in Pan's Labyrinth, in which he plays the doctor who secretly aids the rebel fighters. Knowing it will likely mean his death, he kills with mercy one of the rebels who had been captured and tortured; as he walks away, about to be shot by Captain Vidal, Angulo maintained the character's dignity and moral fortitude. Only an actor such as he could have handled such a part without being overdramatic or indulgent.

Skye McCole Bartusiak, who portrayed Mel Gibson’s young daughter in the 2000 film “The Patriot,” was found dead in her Houston home on Saturday. She was 21.

Ms. Bartusiak was born in Houston on Sept. 28, 1992. She made her acting debut in the television mini-series “Storm of the Century” in 1999 and had a role on “24” in 2002-3.

Though largely a TV actor who guest-starred on dozens of shows, he appeared memorably in hit 1988 action film “Die Hard,” in which he played executive Joseph Takagi, who refuses to give up the security code to the skyscraper’s bank vault when a group of German terrorists seizes the building. He was shot in the head by the group’s leader, Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman.

In the big-budget WWII film “Midway” (1976), which told the story of the key battle from both American and Japanese points of view, Shigeta was featured prominently in the role of Vice Admiral Nagumo, whose despair at Japan’s loss in the battle is moving.

The actor had most recently appeared in the 2009 film “The People I’ve Slept With,” directed by Quentin Lee.

On TV, he appeared in staples including “Hawaii Five-O,” “Perry Mason,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Ironside,” “Kung Fu,” “Streets of San Francisco,” “The Love Boat” and “Beverly Hills, 90210.”

He also appeared in films such as Elvis Presley musical “Paradise, Hawaiian Style” and 1973’s “Lost Horizon.”

RIP Makeup Artist and Pioneer, Dick Smith (1922-2014) | FANGORIA? (http://www.fangoria.com/new/rip-makeup-artist-and-pioneer-dick-smith-1922-2014/)

Renowned Makeup FX Wizard Dick Smith has passed. His contribution to the genre and the world of Makeup FX, so integral to horror and cinema at large, is impossible to overstate… Smith’s filmography and influence extends farther than just THE EXORCIST. In 1965, Smith penned the essential DICK SMITH’S DO-IT-YOURSELF MONSTER MAKE-UP HANDBOOK and his entire career is an index of fantastic, otherworldly work including the likes of DARK SHADOWS, LITTLE BIG MAN, THE GODFATHER, TAXI DRIVER, BURNT OFFERINGS, ALTERED STATES, THE FURY, GHOST STORY and AMADEUS, for which he won an Oscar in 1984. Smith’s second Oscar came in 2011, when the technician of horror received an Academy Honorary Award for “for his unparalleled mastery of texture, shade, form and illusion.”

SINGER RALPH MORMAN PASSES AT AGE 66 (http://eddietrunk.com/singer-ralph-morman-passes-at-age-66/)

He is best known as lead vocalist for the Joe Perry Project from 1979 through 1980. The Project was formed shortly before Joe Perry left Aerosmith. They immediately signed a record deal with CBS Records and released their debut album Let The Music Do The Talking, produced by legendary producer Jack Douglas. The group toured extensively in the USA and the album peaked at #47 on Billboard selling over 250,000 copies. After the Joe Perry Project, he joined the English Blues Rock band Savoy Brown featuring guitarist Kim Simmonds. He recorded two albums with them. The first was 1981′s Rock ‘N Roll Warriors which included the single Run To Me and became the band’s highest-charting single in the USA. The band performed several major arena shows in the USA alongside Judas Priest. The second album was Greatest Hits-Live In Concert released in 1982.

Between 1972-1974 Ralph was in the band Bux which included future Angel members Punky Meadows and Mickie Jones as well as drummer Rocky Isaac (ex-Jimi Hendrix). Their album We Come To Play was released in 1976 (two years after they disbanded) on Capitol Records and was produced by Jack Douglas. His first “professional band” was The Outcasts who released the single Loving You Sometimes on Plato Records.

Didn't see as many times as you, but I saw them quite a lot...especially the 'classic' lineup. Very sad. He had a rough couple years due to financial problems and the fight over the name etc. but I thought he had turned it around. Wayne Static Death Brings Conflicting Reports

http://www.fmqb.com/article.asp?id=2857941&spid=783

hortly after the news broke, various Internet sources reported that Static died from a drug overdose. However, Loudwire reported that a publicist for the musician put out a statement saying that drugs played no part in his death. A press release from VQPR, which has repped Wayne Static in the past, explained that Static "passed away quietly in his sleep at his home," according to Loudwire.

The statement continues, "The couple [Wayne Static and wife Tera Wray] was getting ready to leave for a Fall/Winter tour this morning. They were to have left the night before on Halloween, but decided they would head out early in the morning November 1. The couple, known for partying heavy, had left hard drugs in 2009 and had not touched them since. Static's first solo album – Pighammer – was a tribute to his new non-drug life and hoped it would help others to get clean from hard chemical drugs. More official information about his passing will be released in the following days. This is not a drug related incident or an O.D."

Wayne Static Death Brings Conflicting Reports

http://www.fmqb.com/article.asp?id=2857941&spid=783

That statement needs to be taken with a grain (or three) of salt as it obviously came from the wife... even if he did die in his sleep with no drugs in his system, the wear and tear that his years on the dark side took on him no doubt caused whatever happened.

And yes, the wife was hated by just about everyone involved with the Static camp from the moment she arrived. That is straight from the source BTW. For me, it was a shame to see Wayne allow himself to get "Yoko'd" as bad as he did.

Leigh Chapman, Actress and Screenwriter, Dies at 75 (http://variety.com/2014/film/news/leigh-chapman-actress-and-screenwriter-dies-at-75-1201354159/)

Chapman was familiar to TV viewers as Sarah, Napoleon Solo’s efficient secretary in several 1965 episodes of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” She also did guest shots on several other mid-’60s series including “Combat,” “Dr. Kildare,” “McHale’s Navy” and “The Monkees.”

But she found her calling as a scriptwriter, starting in TV with “Burke’s Law,” “Mission: Impossible,” “It Takes a Thief,” “The Mod Squad” and “My Favorite Martian.” She penned six scripts for “The Wild Wild West,” one of which earned Agnes Moorehead her only acting Emmy.

Chapman soon graduated to feature-film work, mostly – and unusually for a female writer in the ’70s – in the action-adventure genre, notably with the Peter Fonda car-chase film “Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry.”

Subsequent writing credits included “Steel,” “Boardwalk,” “King of the Mountain,” “Impulse” and the Chuck Norris film “The Octagon.” She did uncredited work on “All the Marbles” and wrote the original treatment that eventually became the Isaac Hayes blaxploitation film “Truck Turner.”

Her final writing credits were the 1993 pilot for “Walker, Texas Ranger” and another first-season episode of the Chuck Norris series, although a creative dispute led her to substitute her mother’s name (Louise McCarn) in the credits for both.

Danny Lee, Special Effects Man on 'Bonnie and Clyde,' Dies at 95 (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/danny-lee-dead-bonnie-clyde-754369)

Danny Lee, a special-effects maestro who orchestrated the memorable bullet-ridden finale for Bonnie and Clyde and received an Oscar for his work on the Disney fantasy Bedknobs and Broomsticks, has died. He was 95.

Lee, who contributed to more than 50 Disney films during his career, died Nov. 28 at an assisted living facility in Prescott, Ariz., his family announced.

In an era before computer-generated effects, the Wisconsin native blew up houses and cars, created rain, flew people and beds in the air and helped create what was, at the time, one of the most shocking endings in cinema history.

A son of Carl Lee — an effects man who worked on Abbott & Costello comedies — Lee joined Disney Studios in 1969 as head of special effects. He worked on films in the Herbie, the Love Bug series as well as on The Shaggy D.A. (1976), Freaky Friday (1976) and The Black Hole (1979), for which he received another Oscar nomination.

Earlier, Lee was a freelancer who traveled around the world to work on-location for such films as The Ten Commandments (1956), Around the World in Eighty Days (1956), On the Beach (1959), Swiss Family Robinson (1960), It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), Mary Poppins (1964) and The Great Race (1965).

Oscar Double-Winner Luise Rainer Was 104 (http://variety.com/2014/film/news/double-oscar-winning-actress-luise-rainer-dies-at-104-1201389329/)

Hollywood actress Luise Rainer, who won back-to-back Oscars in the 1930s, has died at the age of 104. Until her death, she was the oldest living Oscar winner. Rainer died of pneumonia Tuesday at her London home, according to daughter Francesca.

Rainer won her twin best actress Oscars for 1936 biopic “The Great Ziegfeld,” drawing the nod despite a fairly small role as impresario Florenz Ziegfeld’s first wife, and 1937’s “The Good Earth,” an adaptation of the novel by Pearl S. Buck in which the heavily, if charmingly, accented Austrian-German actress played a humble Chinese peasant.

The high expectations generated by her Oscar achievements did not, however lead to much further success in Hollywood. Some say the death of her producer at MGM, Irving Thalberg, as well as bad advice from her husband, the playwright Clifford Odets, contributed to the precipitous decline in her career.

Richard Graydon, Stuntman for James Bond Films, Dies at 92
https://search.yahoo.com/search?p=james+bond+stuntman&ei=UTF-8&fr=moz35

British stuntman Richard Graydon, who performed in 10 James Bond films, died Dec. 22 at 92, The Telegraph reported in an obituary.

His first screen credit was in 1952, as one of Robin Hood's "merrie men" in the Disney film The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men.

His stunt career started in 1963 with From Russia With Love, according to The Telegraph. It was followed by Goldfinger (1964) and Thunderball (1965). Graydon became a staple in Bond films for decades, adding seven more to his movie roster: A View to a Kill, Octopussy, For Your Eyes Only, Moonraker, The Spy Who Loved Me, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and You Only Live Twice.

Graydon's work occasionally required performing death-defying feats, like getting shot out of a cannon in Octopussy's circus, sliding down a chain to an aerial tram dangling over an abyss in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and fighting Jaws atop an aerial tram hundreds of feet above Rio de Janeiro for Moonraker, according to The Telegraph.

Over the course of his career, Graydon performed or coordinated stunts in dozens of other films, including Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Batman, Willow, Pathfinder, Pirates, Ladyhawke, A Passage to India, Ordeal by Innocence, Champions, Raiders of the Lost Ark, International Velvet, Star Wars: Episode IV, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Royal Flash, Don’t Look Now, Where Eagles Dare and The Charge of the Light Brigade.

Akira Kurosawa’s longtime collaborator, cinematographer Takao Saito passed away on December 6 of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. He was 85.

Born in Kyoto on 5 March 1929, Saito joined Toho studios in 1946. His paths crossed with Kurosawa’s immediately, as he started working on One Wonderful Sunday, released in 1947, as his first assignment. The young cameraman became an indispensable Kurosawa regular from Ikiru (1952) onwards, from then on working on all of Kurosawa’s films, except for Dersu Uzala, which the director shot in the Soviet Union with a local crew. Saito also worked with other directors, although his main body of work can be said to have been with Kurosawa.

Rest in Peace: David Ryall
http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/83788/rest-peace-david-ryall/

Word of another highly regarded actor’s passing arrived today as we mourn the death of David Ryall, most well known as Elphias Doge in 2010’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, but who also appeared in the original 1989 British TV-movie “The Woman in Black.” He was 79.

Other horror projects in which Ryall was featured include The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse and the TV series “Crooked House” and “Witchcraft.” His other film roles included parts in 2004’s Around the World in 80 Days; 1990’s Truly, Madly, Deeply; and 1980’s The Elephant Man.

Per BBC News, the actor passed away on Christmas Day 2014. The cause of death was not given, but his daughter Charlie, also an actress, said via Twitter: “Please take a moment to remember his huge five-decade-spanning career outside of the more well-known TV & film. Not just Harry Potter.” She added, “Not that I don’t love Harry Potter. I do, I do. But there’s so much more.”

He drew the first commissioned Judge Dredd strip in 2000AD – though it was only published months later in Prog 19 as it was considered too violent and Coop had to tone it down. He drew many strips for the magazine, including Alan Moore‘s Future Shock Abelard Snazz.

Terry Pratchett?s death announced in Discworld-esque tweet

RIP :(

The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

Yoshihiro Tatsumi Passes Away, Aged 79 (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2015/03/08/yoshihiro-tatsumi-passes-away-aged-79/)

Yoshihiro Tatsumi is the ‘sensei’ or grand master of ‘gekiga’, a term he coined for the darker, more dramatic form of manga in Japan. His innovations were vitally important for Japanese comics and his lifetime’s work stands as some of the most psychologically powerful and humane narratives, not only in manga but in global comics culture.

Have not read any of his stuff yet, but have always wanted to.
