So I started the "F'ed up and sick" thread and I don't always want to be a Debbie Downer so here is a thread at the other end of the spectrum: Good people doing good things along with cool and good things.

I'll start with Sir Nicholas Winton a 105 year old Brit who saved 669 children in WWII. Saw this story the other night on 60 Minutes and it was amazing. This guy took it it upon himself to save Jewish children from certain death.

Nicholas Winton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Winton)

Here is the 60 Minutes clip, pretty moving.

Dog is a-ok. Awesome going neighbor dude. Dude deserves a reward. Or, maybe a couple of tickets to a Kings game.... If anyone knows him.

What?
Do you know for a fact that the owner had fault in that? Have you ever owned dogs?
Have your dogs ever gone crazy because of a lot of noise and commotion? Maybe like several helicopters circling your nehighborhood for the better part of an hour ... maybe a little bit of police sirens, flashing lights, police helicopter light... How do you know the dog just didnt freak out, and escape... Or like a lot of dogs do, when there is so much commotion, try to protect their territory.

Oh for Christ sakes, thru the years i've raised 4 dogs from pups to old age and 5 cats the same. Don't go preaching to me on how to take care of animals. I always made damned sure my dogs were never let loose to roam around the ouside. Too many sickos out there. Done same with my cats. My pets have always meant way too much to me to take chances. Now, buzz off

Also, while doing all of that, raised 2 kids same time and I raised them to realize the importance of safety of our pets. So, yes, I would kick the crap out of those kids, had they been mine. One time our dog bit my son because he was messing with the dog while eating. Guess which one got in trouble, and it sure wasn't my dog.

Malawi teenager built windmills out of junk to bring electricity and water to his village. He never saw a windmill but learned about them from library books.

"Mr Kamkwamba, who is now 22 years old, knocked together a turbine from spare bicycle parts, a tractor fan blade and an old shock absorber, and fashioned blades from plastic pipes, flattened by being held over a fire."

"Meanwhile, he installed a solar-powered mechanical pump, donated by well-wishers, above a borehole, adding water storage tanks and bringing the first potable water source to the entire region around his village. He upgraded his original windmill to 48-volts and anchored it in concrete after its wooden base was chewed away by termites. Then he built a new windmill, dubbed the Green Machine, which turned a water pump to irrigate his family's field. "

"He is now on a scholarship at the elite African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Mr Kamkwamba - who has been flown to conferences around the globe to recount his life-story - has the world at his feet, but is determined to return home after his studies.
The home-grown hero aims to finish bringing power, not just to the rest of his village, but to all Malawians, only 2% of whom have electricity.
"I want to help my country and apply the knowledge I've learned," he says. "I feel there's lots of work to be done."

When the SS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS) prepared to launch their first large-scale “resettlement” (liquidation) action against the Jews (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jew) of Przemyśl on July 26, 1942, Battel, in consort with his superior, ordered the bridge over the River San (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_River), the only access into theJewish ghetto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghetto), to be blocked. As the SS commando (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totenkopfverbande) attempted to cross to the other side, the sergeant-major (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hauptfeldwebel) in charge of the bridge threatened to open fire unless they withdrew. All this happened in broad daylight, to the amazement of the local inhabitants. Still later that same afternoon, an army detachment under the command of Oberleutnant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oberleutnant) Battel broke into the cordoned-off area of the ghetto and used army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Army_(Wehrmacht)) trucks to evacuate up to 100 Jews and their families to the barracks of the local military command. These Jews were placed under the protection of the Wehrmacht (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wehrmacht) and were thus sheltered from deportation to the Belzec extermination camp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belzec_extermination_camp).
....
Battel’s stand against the SS came to be recognised only a long time after his death; most notably, through the tenacious efforts of the Israeli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel) researcher and lawyer Dr. Zeev Goshen. On January 22, 1981, almost 30 years after his death, Yad Vashem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yad_Vashem) recognised Albert Battel as Righteous among the Nations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Righteous_among_the_Nations).

On 24 June 1993 Yad Vashem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yad_Vashem) officially recognized Max Liedtke as one of the Righteous Among the Nations.

Last I heard the kid who stepped in to defend the blind kid got suspended and booted off the football team because of the school's "zero tolerance" policy on fighting.

That is profoundly stupid. Don't get me started................

Actually, this is worth a discussion. Beerman, perhaps start a thread on this incident.

Shame on Huntington Beach High School, this kid stuck his neck out to defend one of their handicapped students that was repeatedly getting punched in the face and this hero loses his right to play football for his high school. Sad times in California. 20 years ago, the kid would have been honored.

last I heard the blind (actually nearsighted) kid was/is friends with the "bully". they were messing around when the kid, who happened to be autistic, went off on the "friend". the "friend" fought back, obviously went too far. I'd like to think that it is BS.

mind you, I don't know where you guys have been in the last 20 years but the Zero Tolerance policy has been around for that long. the question is why haven't they revised the policy to make it less lame?

maybe I should have started a new thread, but this story revolved around the Good Samaritan who stepped in for the seemingly helpless blind kid. so, here resurrected this thread lies.

Glad to hear that the guy who stepped in was not suspended.

But you can understand why it went viral. Because things things like that have been happening for years, "zero tolerance" is just ****ing lazy. Do your damn job and have a little backbone. "Zero tolerance" allows people to throw hands up And abdicate responsibility. I sort if get it actually, because dealing with a hole and loser parents sort of sucks but hey, that is your job.

It is the same **** as "minimum sentencing" and "three strikes your out": with that you get kids who get suspended for having Tylenol and guys getting a life sentence for shoplifting.

(Ok so the the Tylenol and the shoplifting thing may have changed by now but they did happen)

It was well recognized that Martha Raye endured more discomfort than any other Vietnam entertainer.

I did not know this, I bet you didn't either. Don't let the sun go down
without reading this about Martha Raye.

The most unforgivable oversight of TV is that her shows were not taped.

I was unaware of her credentials or where she is buried.

Most of the old time entertainers were made of a lot sterner stuff than
today's crop of activist bland whiners.

The following is from an Army Aviator who takes a trip down memory lane:
"It was just before Thanksgiving '67 and we were ferrying dead and wounded from a large GRF west of Pleiku.

We had run out of body bags by noon, so the Hook (CH-47 CHINOOK) was
pretty rough in the back.

All of a sudden, we heard a 'take-charge' woman's voice in the rear.

There was the singer and actress, Martha Raye, with a Special Forces beret and jungle fatigues, with subdued markings, helping the wounded into the Chinook, and carrying the dead aboard. Maggie' had been visiting her Special Forces (SF) 'heroes' out 'west'.

We took off, short of fuel, and headed to the USAF hospital pad at Pleiku.

As we all started unloading our sad pax's, a USAF Captain said to
Martha.... "Ms Raye, with all these dead and wounded to process, there
would not be time for your show!"

To all of our surprise, she pulled on her right collar and said "Captain, see this eagle? I am a full 'Bird' in the US Army Reserve, and on this is a 'Caduceus' which means I am a Nurse, with a surgical specialty.... now, take me to your wounded!"

He said, "Yes ma'am.... follow me."

Several times at the Army Field Hospital in Pleiku, she would 'cover' a
surgical shift, giving a nurse a well-deserved break.
Martha is the only woman buried in the SF (Special Forces) cemetery at
Ft Bragg.

From her memorial.

Entertainer, Actress. Born Margaret Yvonne Teresa Reed, she joined her parents? vaudeville act at three years old. The singer, dancer, actress, comedienne performed on Broadway, in movies and on television. Beginning in 1942, she entertained American troops through World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. For nine years she made trips to Viet Nam, sometimes staying up to six months at a time and often using her training as a nurse to help with the wounded. She was made an honorary member of the Special Forces units that she often assisted and received her Green Beret and title of Lieutenant Colonel from President Lyndon Johnson. Nicknamed ?Colonel Maggie? by the troops, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest commendation for civilians, in 1993. In honor of her service to the military special exception was made to policy so that she could be buried in the military cemetery at Fort Bragg. (bio by: Melanie)

Let me start by stating: I am not a fan of Nickleback, don't own any of their music.

But what did they do to deserve all this? There are tons of crappy bands out there, what makes these guys get all the heat? Are they d-bags as well as being in a crappy band? Did they offend a bunch of folks somehow?

What gives?

ChilledAgua

It seems to be a rather amorphous "phenomenon," helped along by some of the band's own doings.

Here is some background info, including the infamous furniture ad - listening to the featured song says a lot about the derision they receive.

Ok, so I just had the time to fully read this and it hit pretty hard.

I have meet Mohamed Bzeek several times over the years, through my work, and have been to his house. I have seen some of those terminally ill kids

He is great guy, his wife Dawn was awesome, did not know she had passed, very sad. His son Adam is a cool kid, even with his condition he seems always happy. I have not seen him in a while but every time I saw him here is this kid with brittle bone disease and dwarfism, a twisted tiny body, he always had a smile. Always said a cheerful "hello!" and chatted while either sitting in his motorized wheelchair or scooting around on his homemade skateboard. And you can tell very quickly that Adam is smart as hell. Guys on my crew dubbed him the next Steven Hawking. Good to read he is following his dreams.

Every time I , or the guys on my crew, visit Mohamed Bzeek you leave his place both encouraged and depressed as hell. Encouraged because Mohamed and Dawn were so giving and courageous for doing what they did and because Adam is so cool and friendly. Depressed as hell because usually when you went in it was a different sick child and you know the one you saw last time had died and at times the child you saw at the time looked so sick you know they did not have long to live. One time there was this girl, who had very serous issues and while I was there had breathing problems, gasped for breath all of sudden and screamed. Dawn jumped into action like pro and took care of everything. like an Army medic on the battle field. I have to admit I was rattled but I did my best not to let it show.

Me and the guys are always amazed with him, we don't how is he able to do all this for so long.

Mohamed Bzeek is a true hero.

^ So I just recalled a chat I had with Adam years ago. We talked Star Wars and he loved it. He said that one day he was going to build a real lightsaber. I asked if I could have one when he did. "Of course!" but he added I probably not get the first one, that would either go to the Smithsonian or the Defense Department. But I would get one soon after that.

I am looking forward to getting my lightsaber!

Nano, was rescued from a feral colony along with his 4 other brothers. He was only a 1/4 of the size of the other kittens. It was found out that he was born with fatal defect. He lasted 10 days before passing over the rainbow bridge.

His short life inspired a rescue organization TinyKittens.org in Vancouver as well as a local animal hospital Canada West Veterinary Specialists to team up and have a feral-a-thon last October in which they were able to trap and fix 40 feral cats from Nano's colony as well 15 kittens. These were treated free of charge most returned to their home while all the kittens and 6 adult cats were able to be adopted.

Starting this Friday 2/17 they will go out and trap the remaining 30+ cats of that colony then start on another colony in the next township.
the hashtag #TheNanoEffect (http://letsgokings.com/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=TheNanoEffect) has spread world wide and inspired many groups to form to help with feline overpopulation in the hometowns.

A short life but a big impact.

They trapped 34 of 52 feral cats. All have been fixed.
7 are being held for additional treatment. Several have dental issues or upper respiratory infections which need to be treated before being return to the colony though a couple are candidates for potential adoption.

Lifeguards testing out new drone technology in Australia have saved two people stranded off the coast of New South Wales state, as spotted by Quartz. The drone footage shows a birds-eye view of the ocean before the drone ejects the yellow floatation device, which inflates when it hits the water. The two teenage boys were caught about 700 meters (0.4 miles) offshore at Lennox Head in a swell of around three meters (9.8 feet). They were able to grab onto the floatation device and swim to shore.

The Los Angeles County coroner's office identified the slain policeman as Greggory Casillas, 30, of Upland.

Thoughts and prayers to Officer Casillas, his family & friends and to all my brothers and sisters at Pomona PD. :popo:

Tributes are pouring in for a French police officer who died saving the lives of hostages in a supermarket siege by an Islamist gunman on Friday.

Lt-Col Arnaud Beltrame, 44, was shot and stabbed after he traded places with one of the captives following a shooting spree in southern France

French Police spokesman Mr Collomb told reporters on Friday that police officers had managed to get some people out of the supermarket but the gunman had held one woman back as a human shield.

It was at this point, he said, that Col Beltrame had volunteered to swap himself for her.

As he did so, he left his mobile phone on a table with an open line so that police outside could monitor the situation.

When police heard gunshots, a tactical team stormed the supermarket. The gunman was killed and Col Beltrame was mortally wounded.

After the announcement of his death early on Saturday, France's Gendarmerie Nationale - a police force part of the military - honoured its fallen "comrade", saying Col Beltrame "gave his life for the freedom of the hostages"

Sandy Hook parents hit Alex Jones with defamation lawsuits (https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/sandy-hook-parents-just-hit-094656840.html)

Alex Jones has spent years claiming the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School ― where a shooter killed 20 small children and six adults ― was faked. He has claimed the parents of these dead children are liars and “crisis actors.”

Now, those parents are coming after him.

In a pair of lawsuits filed late Monday, the parents of two children who died in the December 2012 shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, say Jones’ repeated lies and conspiratorial ravings have led to death threats. The suits join at least two other recent cases accusing the Infowars host of defamation.

I hope Jones gets destroyed!

Toronto police officer hailed as hero for arresting suspect in the murder of 10 people without firing shot

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/apr/24/toronto-cananda-van-suspect-arrest

I am about to upset a lot of people right now but here goes,

No doubt this Toronto Police officer is a hero for capturing the suspect in the murder of 10 people but..........IMHO he is not a hero for capturing the suspect in the murder of 10 without firing a shot. You ask any police officer with at least 10 years on the job to watch the video in Santi's post and I guarantee you they will **** their pants and become sick to their stomach. Again far be it for me to MMQ this officers actions since I wasn't there, but yes I almost shat myself after watching this.

As far as I'm concerned this suspect should be dead and we should be calling the officer a hero for killing the suspect. This officer's actions are so tactically wrong I can't believe that this officer is still alive. The suspect has just killed 10 people so you already know his state of mind. This suspect is now pointing a dark object at the officer in a threatening manner all the while saying he has a gun in his pocket. (Suspect shot dead totally justified) The officer has now moved away from his cover to engage the potentially armed suspect almost at point blank range. The suspect continues to yell at the officer to kill him while making quick motions with his hand to his pocket 2 times both times returning his hand to a threatening position. (Again suspect shot dead totally justified) With no cover and the suspect still pointing the dark object at him (possibly a gun and even if the officer determined its not a gun the suspect still claims to have a gun in his pocket) the officer holsters his lethal weapon and grabs his ASP baton (non lethal) and verbally engages the suspect. Luckily the suspect gives up and the officer takes him into custody.

This officer took a huge gamble with his life and the lives of his partners and the public (which for some reason were walking around behind the possibly armed suspect) and won. We are not paid to take that big of a gamble with our lives or the lives of innocent citizens in that situation.

Unfortunately this officer will be and has been praised for his actions and this will be the standard used to judge all of the following possible deadly force encounters by police officers everywhere. His department has praised him for his "restraint and professionalism" and he will be the model that the younger officers will be encouraged to follow. One of these days this "model officer" is going be killed or be responsible for another officer being killed.

As far as I'm concerned this officer is playing Russian roulette with his life and one day he will "meet his maker" and then he will be praised again as a hero (a dead one) or maybe not.

Again this is a prime example of why I retired when I did. I knew I could not depend on the younger officers to protect and back me up in a life threatening situation because they will second guess themselves before acting. That second guess is the difference between me going home to Jr or being called a hero at my funeral.

I am so glad that I am retired but now I worry so much for my OG partners still working the beat in a very very different world.

The two men who died Friday in an accidental drowning in Wilbraham were each international students who jumped into the Chicopee River to rescue two young children having trouble with the currents, according to Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni.

The two men were identified Tuesday at Theeb Alyami, 27, and Jaser Daham Alrakah, 25. Both are natives of Saudi Arabia and were attending local colleges, he said. Alyami had been residing in Hartford, while Alrakah had been staying in Springfield.
