‘Edge’ Guys Tom Cruise, Doug Liman Eye Drug Pilot Tale ‘Mena’ (http://deadline.com/2015/01/tom-cruise-doug-liman-mena-universal-1201350391/)

Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are in talks to re-team on Mena, a Gary Spinelli scripted drama that Universal Pictures bought last year in a $1 million spec deal. The spec is a fact-based tale about Barry Seal, a pilot who, in the 1980s, was a gun runner, and drug trafficker who transported contraband for the CIA and the Medellin cartel. He was eventually shot to death by the latter in Baton Rouge. The title refers to Mena, Arkansas, where a lot of the illegal activity took place, under the noses of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton. Cruise is an accomplished pilot in his own right. If this all comes together, the film would shoot sometime this year. Cruise and Liman made Edge Of Tomorrow.

Look. Let's be careful here. My Facebook news feed is full of hatespeak right now between pro and con. I think the author of the second like kinda hits on a valid point that the discussion has turned into
It really has become “Chris Kyle is a hero” versus “Chris Kyle is a monster” and the whole thing has gotten disturbingly ugly. (Adding to this is that Kyle himself isn’t around anymore to defend himself.)
From the sound of it...and I have not seen it, the movie is presented very 'pro' and that seems to be what is provoking the reaction. So I dunno...I don't think Rogen's comments were that far out of line. But I'm a liberal...so that's not a surprise. I get that what Kyle did was a necessity of his circumstances, but it does seem like the pro people may be glorifying things a wee bit.
Keep it civil in your responses or this WILL get shut down.

Michael Moore: ‘Snipers Aren’t Heroes’
http://uproxx.com/movies/2015/01/american-sniper-clint-eastwood-michael-moore/

I don't think Rogen's comments were that bad. I felt the same way. Thought the movie was excellent too. There's just a few sequences where it shows him mowing down one person then moving on to another and it was very similar to that Nazi movie he was talking about. The great irony (that the people jumping down his throat are missing) is that the subject of that film didn't want that celebrity or notoriety either. At least, in the Tarantino movie. Much like Kyle, he was just doing his job to survive. Is he also a hero? I bet I know the answer to that one...

Moore's on the other hand, those were a little out of left field. On one side of the coin. On the other, he's got a point. If he presented it better, maybe it doesn't hit as hard. Being that it's him though....probably not going to fly. I mean, I don't think that just because you sign up to go to war, that you're automatically a hero. War isn't the good guys versus the bad guys. It's all about perspective right? I mean, if some big country came into the US and started killing civilians because bombs intended for the bad guys didn't hit the bad guys, wouldn't WE start some **** too? Would we look at their snipers who were picking off people fighting back as heroes? Of course not. Having said that, Moore came out swinging and gave no nuance. Just used it as an excuse to lay into American Foreign Policy on the back of a guy who (arguably) did more good at home with vets suffering from PTSD than he did on the front lines.

Anyway, the movie doesn't really go too pro (in terms of war), but it might sway a little in terms of who he was. I don't know much about the dude. The movie shows the toll his job likely takes on the people who do it. The unintended consequences of war and killing and all of that. I thought it was quite good and tragic all wrapped up in one.

Offical Bruce Lee Biopic in the Works From His Family
http://collider.com/bruce-lee-biopic/

BRUCE LEE ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES BIOPIC OF THE ICONIC ACTION HERO AND MARTIAL ARTIST

Daughter Shannon Lee Teams with Lawrence Grey and Janet Yang to Produce New Feature Film

LOS ANGELES (February 27, 2015) – Shannon Lee, daughter of legendary martial artist Bruce Lee, announced today that his legacy will be brought to the screen in a new feature film, the first to be made with his family’s full involvement in the production. Lee’s company Bruce Lee Entertainment has partnered with Lawrence Grey and Janet Yang to produce a definitive biopic of the iconic Hollywood and Chinese star.

“There have been projects out there involving my father, but they’ve lacked a complete understanding of his philosophies and artistry. They haven’t captured the essence of his beliefs in martial arts or storytelling. The only way to get audiences to understand the depth and uniqueness of my father is to generate our own material and find amazing, like-minded partners to work with,” said Lee.

Bruce Lee’s classic films shattered records with each successive release in the early ‘70s, and his legacy remains unparalleled to this day. With tens of millions of fans following his rise, Bruce Lee’s untimely death at age 32 at the height of his fame and success shocked audiences worldwide. The unprecedented feature on the icon, who was one of the most compelling entertainment personalities to ever grace the silver screen, will be produced by Shannon Lee with Lawrence Grey (Last Vegas, Hope Springs, and the upcoming Section Six) and Ben Everard of Grey Matter Productions, as well as Janet Yang (The Joy Luck Club, People vs. Larry Flynt, Documented).

“Many don’t know that Bruce Lee was also a prolific writer and a creator of his own unique art and philosophy. That’s what we want to show – not just his kick-ass physicality, but the depth of his character and beliefs,” said Lee.

“I have long been inspired by Bruce Lee and wanted to partner with Shannon in order to really delve into the depth of the icon in a way that has never before been seen on the screen,” said Grey. “It is really a dream project and the perfect partnership.”

Bruce Lee Entertainment officially opened its doors in 2014 to create compelling and authentic productions around the action hero and martial artist. In addition to this biopic, Bruce Lee Entertainment has a number of film and television projects in development, including a television series based on an original idea and materials by Bruce Lee with director Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6) as well as a reality-based show to launch in China with Keanu Reeves and Stephen Hamel of Company Films (John Wick). They are also working on a series of novels based on Bruce Lee writings along with a comic book series. Bruce Lee Entertainment already has one success with the remarkably popular mobile game, Bruce Lee: Enter the Game, created by its subsidiary Bruce Lee Interactive with Canadian developer, Hibernum Creations. The game saw over 5 million downloads in its first four weeks.

Janet Yang has been brought on to Bruce Lee Entertainment to help guide production as well as consult on the China market where interest in Bruce Lee remains extraordinarily high.

“It is a tremendous privilege to be working with Shannon on these exciting ventures about her father. In this age of an increasingly globalized culture, I can’t think of a more talented and innovative individual who embodies the best of East and West, and who can inspire future generations,” said Yang.

Bruce Lee Entertainment is represented at UTA and is a subsidiary of Bruce Lee Enterprises, the exclusive owner of all commercial merchandising, allied rights, and marks relating to the use of Bruce Lee’s name, image, and attributes worldwide.

Report: Sacha Baron Cohen to Write, Direct, and Star in Freddie Mercury Biopic
http://collider.com/freddie-mercury-biopic-sacha-baron-cohen-director/

A biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury has been in the works for many, many years, and throughout most of that time, Sacha Baron Cohen was to be the man to bring Mercury to life onscreen. He sure looked the part, and few doubted he could bring the goods in the dramatic department. But back in 2013, Cohen finally exited the project over creative differences with the remaining Queen band members, who wanted the film to be a more family-friendly movie instead of Cohen’s envisioned R-rated, unflinching look at Mercury’s life.

Great news, right?

Penned by Daniel Stiepleman it tells he story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg as she faced numerous obstacles to her fight for equal rights over the years. Making a nice jump from her Sundance buzz, "The Diary Of A Teenage Girl" helmer Marielle Heller will direct, with Focus Features throwing their might behind the picture too. Indeed, the wheels are moving fast, and the plan is to get this in front of cameras before the end of the year.

Rob Zombie to Direct Groucho Marx Pic Scripted by Oren Moverman
http://collider.com/rob-zombie-to-direct-groucho-marx-pic-scripted-by-oren-moverman/

If that headline makes no sense to you, don’t worry; I had the same reaction. Apparently Zombie and Miranda Bailey have gotten their hands on the rights to Steve Stoliar’s memoir, “Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House.” Deadline further reports that Zombie will direct the adaptation, which will be scripted by Oren Moverman (Love & Mercy).

Stoliar, a TV writer and devout Groucho fan, spent the last few years of the comedian’s life by his side as his personal secretary and archivist. During those short years, Stoliar found himself in the company of such names of renown as Groucho’s brothers Zeppo and Gummo, Mae West, George Burns, Bob Hope, Jack Lemmon, and Steve Allen. On the flipside of this trip into the lives of the rich and famous was dealing with Erin Fleming, the rather frustrating woman in charge of Groucho’s personal and professional life.

The story itself is odd enough to make a compelling watch, but Zombie’s involvement is the extra-strange cherry on top. Here’s how the rocker and horror-guru came to the project:

“I have been a huge Groucho Marx fan ever since I was a child and have read countless book on the comic legend, but after reading the book Raised Eyebrows, a totally new perspective on Groucho’s life emerged,” says Zombie. “I immediately saw this project as Groucho’s Sunset Boulevard and knew I had to bring it to the big screen. It is a sad, funny and very dark tale of a one of Hollywood’s greatest stars final years.”

Telluride Review: Aaron Sorkin’s ‘Steve Jobs’ Directed By Danny Boyle Starring Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet & Seth Rogen (http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/review-aaron-sorkins-steve-jobs-directed-by-danny-boyle-starring-michael-fassbender-kate-winslet-seth-rogen-20150906)

A surefire awards contender, “Steve Jobs” is largely breathtaking stuff, at the very least on an experiential level; it’s a rush of blood to the head. A electrifying portrayal of a relentlessly determined and dysfunctionally complicated figure, “Steve Jobs” is a buzzingly entertaining movie about an obdurate radical with a broken operating system who still managed to transform the world around us, how we communicate, and the course of technological history. There’s nothing wrong with taking a warts-and-all approach to a pop legend, but when it becomes mostly warts, the reason for making the movie in the first place gets lost. Did Abrahams just want to compose a lot of postcard-pretty pictures of a handsome man in a cowboy hat? Or perhaps he was trying to mimic what Williams says about his singing voice — that whenever he finds a note he likes, he sticks with it. [C]

‘The Walk’ Review: An Immersive Retelling of Petit’s Impossible Dream| NYFF 2015
http://collider.com/the-walk-movie-review-joseph-gordon-levitt-nyff-2015/

By the time he takes his first step out on that wire, you’re right there with him in every respect. Zemeckis’ use of IMAX 3D undoubtedly enhances the event, but it’s the strong performances, storytelling and shot selection that make the movie’s big moment especially immersive.

The Walk is a high quality crowdpleaser. It’s big, bold, beautiful and zips through the wildly inspiring narrative with a powerful amount of momentum. Zemeckis delivers big when it comes to the use of the IMAX 3D technology, but what makes The Walk far more than a quick thrill is Zemeckis’ respectful and heartfelt approach to telling Philippe’s story, and especially what the Twin Towers mean to him, an aspect of the film that will undoubtedly strike a chord with many.

Here’s the official synopsis for When We Rise:

“When We Rise” chronicles the personal and political struggles, set-backs and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today. The period piece tells the history of the gay rights movement, starting with the Stonewall Riots in 1969.

At first glance, When We Rise looks like a hugely promising gambit. The great Gus Van Sant, who is getting over a critical shellacking over the mediocre but by no means awful Sea of Trees, reteams with Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black for the story of how the LGBTQ (and, eventually, the LGBTQIA) community came to prominence in America. In a bit of a twist, the series is premiering on ABC, with a litany of audacious performers set to play prominent figures in the fight for equal rights, from Guy Pearce and Whoopi Goldberg to Mary Louise Parker and Michael Kenneth Williams. That’s not even mentioning Rachel Griffiths, Rosie O’Donnell, and David Hyde Pierce, and a host of newcomers. It’s a major event series on a network not known for ambition or audacity, and has the chance to be seen even by those who just have basic cable. This could be big.

Director Taika Waititi Moving from ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ to Michael Jackson’s Chimp’s Biopic, ‘Bubbles’
http://collider.com/taika-waititi-michael-jackson-movie-bubbles/

About a year ago, we reported that Dan Harmon was working on bringing Isaac Adamson’s Black List script Bubbles to the big screen. The bizarre, stop-motion animated project looks at Michael Jackson’s life through the eyes of his pet chimpanzee, Bubbles. Bubbles was adopted from an Austin, Texas research facility and given residence at the Neverland Ranch in 1983. He stayed with Jackson and was a constant companion until he became overly aggressive and was sent to a monkey sanctuary in Florida.

It’s a strange, unique story that will require a thoughtful director to tackle the material, but it looks like Harmon’s Starburns Industries has found the right man for the job. According to Screen Daily, Thor: Ragnarok helmer Taiki Waititi has signed on to direct alongside Fantastic Mr. Fox animation director Mark Gustafson.

michael-jackson-bubbles-1Waititi released the following statement about why he signed on to the project and how he envisions it:

“It’s an idea that fascinates me and one I want to develop further,” Waititi, who made Michael Jackson a central figure in his 2010 award-winning film Boy, said.

“Most people know I’m a huge Michael Jackson fan, so the main thing for me is to make sure it’s respectful of him and his legacy. I’m not interested in making a biopic; I want to focus on telling a story that blends fact and fantasy, about an animal trying to make sense of the world.

“This film is not about Michael Jackson because that’s not a story for me to tell – or a story I’d be comfortable telling – it’s about a chimpanzee’s fascinating journey through the complex jungle of human life.

“I think animation is the only way to approach a story like this. I really loved Anomalisa because it was beautiful and authentic in its meditation on loneliness. I’m really excited to be working with Dan Harmon and Starburns as we share similar sensibilities and want to tell human stories in unique and artistic ways.”

It will be interesting to see how Waititi approaches the material, which is sure to be controversial no matter what despite being an animated movie where the main point of view is from a chimpanzee.

Scarlett Johansson and Rupert Sanders to Reteam for Massage Parlor Drama ‘Rub & Tug’
http://collider.com/scarlett-johansson-rupert-sanders-rub-and-tug/#images

New Regency has won the rights for Rupert Sanders’ next movie, Rub & Tug. Deadline describes the film in the vein of American Hustle, and it will star Scarlett Johansson as a larger-than-life figure Jean Marie Gill, who flourished in the male-based illicit industries of massage parlors and prostitution by taking on the physical identity of a man.

Per Deadline, Gill “was a larger than life character who took on the mob and became the crime kingpin of 1970s Pittsburgh through her empire of illicit massage parlors and an anabolic steroids ring that helped fuel the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL dynasty, all the while cross-dressing and leaning on her allies in the gay community to help grow her empower. However, it is Jean’s fiery romance with her girlfriend Cynthia that truly defines her and forms the emotional core of the story.”

Weekend Box Office: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’s $50 Million Opening Is Guaranteed to Blow Your Mind
http://collider.com/bohemian-rhapsody-weekend-box-office/

https://i.imgur.com/5tRyETw.jpg

Nice to see people ignoring the unnecessarily harsh reviews...and, in my opinion, another attempt by the press to write the narrative for a movie's success. I saw it yesterday and I enjoyed it. Rami Malek was Oscar nomination worthy. I actually think he did a better job than Sascha Baron Cohen might have. He was subtle, and surprisingly emotionally vulnerable...presenting a side of Freddie Mercury that is hard to imagine. Did they take liberties and is it a little cleaned up? Well, yeah. But it's a movie, not a documentary, so it's easy to forgive. The other members of Queen come off well...I would imagine their involvement in the movie had a lot to do with that. The music selection is fantastic, as you would expect. And yes, the tragedy of losing this transcendent talent squeezed some well earned tears from my eyes. I think overall the movie pays tribute to a fascinating life without dwelling in the salacious aspects. If you are a Queen fan, I cannot see you walking away disappointed in this.

And I don't care how well they make fun of it...I'm in love with my car is a terrific song.

Interesting take. I’ve had two people this weekend tell me malek was really good but the movie as a whole was not anything to write home about. Reviews have been brutal but you know how those go. I’m going on with no preconceived notions and hope to enjoy it.

We saw it last night and very much enjoyed it. I loved how they stayed away from the controversial aspects of Freddie's life - I don't need or want to know about it, as I lived through it. Queen was the first band I ever saw live and I was amazed how the mannerisms as well as other things were done in the movie. As an example I had forgotten how John Deacon moved while playing the bass but the actor who portrayed him knew how he moved and I could remember it from seeing them live 40 years ago.

And jd I too love "I'm In Love With My Car," but will do you one better. My favorite song off that amazing album is the "Year of 39."
