New season, new thread, why not?

Mike Magee's chip was one of the nominees (http://www.lagalaxy.com/post/2016/03/07/mike-magee-nominated-att-mls-goal-week) for Week 1 MLS Goal of the Week, but didn't make it in the new bracket voting format. Unfortunately, the voting page (http://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2016/03/07/att-mls-goal-week-week-1-voting) does not load for me, so I can't vote.

Next up: Colorado Rapids?

I'll be out of town for the Clasico this weekend, but I'll be one of the few people in the sports book watching soccer instead of basketball.

Considering how long they were up a man I still wasn't overly impressed. and the defensive breakdowns late in games need to stop.

I still think the back 4 should be Cole - Van Damme - De La Garza - Rogers at almost all times.

I got tickets for that game. Mostly because a good friend's dad is a lifelong Leicester fan (imagine him this year). Ibrahimovic will probably already be gone and not play.

But it'd be a nice game for a send-off and for the galaxy to introduce him!

So much for Zlatan to G's. Oh, well.

Went to the the US Open Cup game last night. It ended up as expected, but the amateur opponent, La Maquina showed a lot of hustle, grit and tenacity to take it to extra time. The Galaxy performance was somewhat embarrassing, all things considered. Some of the players looked like they didn't want to be there. At least, it seemed like they did not take La Maquina seriously at all, but a red card for Rafael Garcia and a rare botch from AJ DeLaGarza led to La Maquina knotting the game. Playing 10 against 11 for most of the game certainly made the game closer, but being forced into extra time by an amateur side is not what you want if you're the Galaxy.

To top it off, the game-winner was on a trick quick restart while Villareal was on the floor that somewhat reeked of desperation. It was abundantly clear at the end of regulation (and then throughout extra time) that La Maquina was out of whatever gas they had, and the Galaxy were going to have their way late in the match. The trick play was unnecessary. On the plus side, Raul Mendiola was running like a demon for the full 120 minutes. I was amazed how much energy he showed at the end of the match. Jose Villareal looked great also, and also played hard through the whole 120 even after a really hard knock. Husidic and Lletget came in as subs, and they showed the energy you expect from them, with Lleget the star and scoring a brace. On the minus side, Arena's love affair with Leonardo continues, and, of course, the biggest minus is that the Galaxy, even in victory, came up with another sub-par performance in a US Open Cup match.

Here's a link to the game highlights, including the trick restart. I must admit, as annoyed as I was at the gimmick play, it's a little fun to watch even though the announcers (and even the written game recap) fail to mention what a cheap stunt it was, or that it was a quick restart at all. If it happened against better competition, it would have been more entertaining, but against a bunch of amateurs, it's unnecessary.

Totally unnecessary, but high comedy.

Galaxy pulled off a 4-2 victory after being down 1-2 with about 15 minutes to play. Dos Santos and Zardes subbed in for Magee and Gordon and really sparked the offense. It helped that Sigi didn't even bring many from the first squad. Neither did the Galaxy, really, but they are very, very deep this season, which is great.

They advance to the US Open Cup semi-finals, which is great. What was not great was Leonardo, who was brutally awful in this game. I think it was just the previous round of the Open Cup where he had what I thought was his best performance ever for the Galaxy. I thought maybe he had turned a corner, but tonight seemed like he kept turning that corner until it was a u-turn.

Regardless, Gio, Zardes, Lletget, De Jong, Husidic all looked great, and it's nice to see the Galaxy make a deep run in this tournament for a change.

Ema Boateng showed some impressive speed yesterday in the Galaxy victory over RSL.

Also was surprised to see Landon get the start after going the full 90 on Sunday.

I guess when Keane, Gerrard et al are injured, you can rely on someone like Donovan.

Boateng surely made up for the soft penalty. Very nice goals.

But ain't no way he's going to have space like that against Colorado.
