In other news, Karl Dorrell is still a joke.

Verner saved him from hearing all week about his 4th-and-1 call.

As you know... I am an old-school UCLA football fan, I LOVE when they win but this coach is KILLING ME with his decision making and lack of desire to strive for the big prize (a BCS Championship). And, what frustrates me beyond words is his Lavin-like ability to save his (own) ass every time the heat is on.... but yet the program and his players is/are still not where it/they should be. I KNEW we were headed back to the days of Donahue's gutty little Bruins the day this IDIOT was hired. This team has Donahue's stamp all over it.... use the non-conference schedule as practice time (we lose to 0-whatever Utah & Notre Dame), Beat SC (which is looking like a possibility more & more every day) and HOPE to have enough wins in the Pac-10 to somehow back into a Rose Bowl (with a little help from other teams). If this guy's luck finally runs out and he gets *****-canned... DO NOT let ANY of Donahue's former players (Like Wayne Cook, Matt Stevens Troy Aikman or the prince of mediocrity.. Donahue himself, who all pushed for this to be hired in the first place) have a say in the hiring of the next head coach!!

OH... a little birdy told me the other day that Bill Cowher's daughter is a student at UCLA... wouldn't that be nice! ...a little something to think about.

Attn all Bruin fans:

Saw this tidbit from Sam Farmer's NFL column today:

When Mike Holmgren steps down -- and I predict that will come this off-season -- Seattle will replace him with Jim Mora, its defensive coordinator. Unless the University of Washington or UCLA hires Mora first. . . .

Now that I live in the state of Washington I can almost guarantee that Holmgren is stepping down after this season to be the Hawks full-time GM. Mora has ties to the Pacific NW and I think he was brought on by Holmgren to take over. I think Willingham gets another year or two at UW which brings us to a very interesting point.

Would UCLA really look at Jim Mora, Jr. as their next coach? Considering Pete Carroll's success at 'SC I wouldn't be surprised if they went after a former NFL head coach. Personnally I think the next UCLA Head Coach will be Dwayne Walker but this really brings up some interesting ideas.

Anybody got a good read on who Guerrero will go after? I doubt the Bruins win either of their next two games but that is just me. The injuries alone are going to make it very hard to win these two games.

Who do you all want to see as the next head coach?

He was there for all of one year without any of his own recruits, so I think you are overvaluing that. Even Pete Carroll was a .500 coach in his first season and lost the Vegas Bowl to Utah.

The one thing the guy brings is instant credibility to the program. Recruits will buy what he's selling, and God knows we could definitely do better in that department. Dorrell's recruiting was unimpressive on both sides of the ball--undersized linemen, undersized linebackers, unimpressive running backs and quarterbacks, etc.

If he's the guy, I'm stoked. I'm really not sure what more you could want in a head coach.

JB. Clearly I don't follow UCLA football. They were talking about replacing Dorell and mentioned he had a great recruiting class coming in next year. Like one of the best in the nation.
Do they keep him to get those recruits in then fire him after next season? if they cut him no they can decommitt and UCLA could lose all those sought after players(4-6). Almost sounds like it would be worth keeping him and fire him mid season to get these kids in

Jbruin and I were talking about something similar to this situation and he made a ton of sense saying

"New head coach for the future>than one year of recruits"

If they do your plan who knows who they would hire, and it certainly doens't look good for next year's recruiting class. How many would transfer, how many of the next class wouldn't bother looking at UCLA because the program would certainly look at turmoil.

If they have a chance to bring in Marciucci now, you do it. You don't play games, and let Dorrell coach half a season and then fire him. Things don't work like that in the real world.

A bunch of those commits are now wavering (we already lost a stud WR to ASU who was a previous commit) anyway because of how poorly the team has played and the subsequent coaching uncertainty. Also, that recruiting class ranking is a bit specious because LOIs aren't signed until February I believe and there are still quite a few blue chippers out there.

A lot of these kids chose UCLA because they simply loved the school, and quite a few have said they would stay with their UCLA commitment regardless of who the new head coach is.

In simple terms, the longer you put it off "until next year" is just another year you're setting yourself back. Dorrell is not going to cut it anymore. I'd rather have five years with a good coach who will be a better recruiter than Dorrell than keep putting it off because we're scared about one season just for ~5 unproven freshmen. Next season is going to be rough anyway because we are losing 18-20 senior starters. Time to start fresh.

jb, I think I am now convinced on Mooch. I agree with your assessment on KD's recruits. No passion, no size, lots of speed but no ability to hit and hurt.

It is ironic. On Friday I was watching the replay of the 1993 game on ESPN Classic and I was watching our defense. Man was that a big team. Strong, hit like a ton, etc. Granted I think they lost that game to 'SC (I couldn't watch to the end of the replay) but I felt a lot better about the team then I do now.

Can KD, today, and go after Mooch. If you lose recruits, so be it. Live with one year (and it will be bad with all the graduating seniors, regardless). Give Mooch a four year deal and see what he can do with his own recruits. I just wonder if he would want the job. Seems more like a Bay-area guy. But he sure could develop the QB's!

I think that's complete BS, ESPN came out with some random report that Arkansas was interested in Lane Kiffin and that made everyone speculate.

I see no reason for Kiffin wanting out of Oakland. He's got the team playing some damn good football right now, and he's gone head to head with Davis over a few issues and he's won out(Gallery to guard, zone blocking scheme, using the shot gun).

Where are these rumors coming from?

I trust your opinion on these things:

Why the aversion to Neuheisel (sp?)? Correct me if I'm wrong, but he was a successful coach at two big programs. Is it just that the gambling thing at UW which makes UCLA is nervous about comparisons to Toledo's ethics violations? Is that all?

Gambling on college basketball? BFD. Yeah, bad idea, but there's no need to sew a scarlet letter onto this guy for it.

But is there something else to it? I just don't think UCLA's going to attract enough Grade A candidates to blow off a successful coach with ties to the University.

And from BRO...

As we leaked on the BRO Premium Football Message Board, Mike Bellotti, the Oregon Head Coach, interviewed for the UCLA head coaching job, sources have indicated.

Bellotti, too, from what we've learned, is the frontrunner for the job.

Some sources have indicated that the deal is actually in the stages of being finalized.

Bellotti is in his 13th year as the Oregon head man, and has led the Ducks to the most successful stint in their football history, with nine bowl appearances in 11 years, eight or more wins in seven of his seasons, finishing in the top 20 four times. In the 2000 season, he led the Ducks to a Fiesta Bowl win and a #2 final ranking. Bellotti, of course, is known for his creative offenses, averaging more than 400 yards per game in eight of his 11 seasons.

It's believed by sources close to the situation that Bellotti would want to keep defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker.

Hoya

I would be very satisfied.

I'm confused though. The Plaschke article says "Mike Bellotti is 5-3 against Pete Carroll." How is that even possible? Carroll's been at USC for seven years, and he sure as hell hasn't lost to ANYONE five times. He's only got nine conference losses. Seven of those are Harbaugh (Stanford) this year, Dorrell in '06, Mike Riley (OSU) in '06, Mike Price (WSU) in '01 and '02, Neuheisel (UW) in '01, and Tedford (Cal) in '03.

I was listening to Joe McDonnell a couple of days ago and he thinks Rick Neuheisel is about 3/4 of the way in as coach... and also, there could be a chance of Norm Chow coming in as Rick Offesnive Coordinator. And of course Dewayne Walker would have to stay.

Why would Chow go from being a very successful OC for SC, to a damn good OC for the Titans, to OCing for UCLA? Seems like it would be a demotion.

... but if the job comes with a caveat, that you have to retain Dewayne Walker as DC, aren't you sort of just a glorified OC anyway? :)

That brings up a question, is that one of the hang-ups in finding a coach? Or is it money Guerrero is offering? Or is this job that unattractive?

Doesn't matter to me how he did it but he did it. Skippy kept Dwayne Walker and that did everything to get this class in. I like that they addressed the need at RB and QB and that they pulled a JC QB for immediate need. I would like to see them get a WR from the JC ranks as a short term help as well. I know they don't like doing that but they will still need to compete next year and the year after and JC players are what that is for.

Norm Chow dislikes Mormon Quarterbacks and has outright said so, because they leave for missions.

He was OC at BYU for twenty years and consistently said that going on a Mormon mission hindered their ability to grow as a quarterback so much so that it made them incapable of playing the position at a high level required to compete at D-I upon return.

Ben Olson went on a Mormon mission, and his strengths are throwing the long ball. The Bruins haven't really excelled at that since Toledo was the coach - not ironically, the coach that recruited him. He definitely wasn't Karl Dorrell type of player, he doesn't have the quickness to keep the small ball short pass offensive scheme that he ran. I'm guessing it's the same with Neuheisel. I believe he's very much so Kerry Collins in every sense.

He makes some good comments in the article. It's true that USC is so loaded with players that he might or might not get a chance to play. We will probably see this trend to continue as players are not even starting to transfer from USC to school where they can crack the line up weekly.

Carson TE Presley commits to UCLA - LA Daily News (http://www.dailynews.com/sports/ci_11259280)

Scout.com's Tracy Pierson notes that this COULD represent a turning point in LA college football.

It's pretty rare this decade for an elite kid to verbal to USC early and switch to the lowly Bruins. Presley is legitimately the best player at his position in the nation, and a local. And because of uncertainties at USC (offensive scheme, recruiting violations, playing time) you're starting to see top recruits consider alternatives. It helps that you have Neuheisel/Chow when you're trying to recruit an offensive player to UCLA.

Furthermore, Presley and Brehaut may tag-team recruit other area players to UCLA. Presley's high profile will influence other kids' decisions, particularly locals.

The way I see it, as a USC fanboy......

Pete Carroll will not promise ANY recruit they will start or even play, they HAVE to earn the right. USC will some to UCLA and other school because of this. In the long run I think it builds a better program. WHy start some kid who hasn't earned it because you promised him even with a better player on the bench.

If it was my kid I would push him towards going somewhere where he will get to play significant minutes every week. Thats the only way to be seen if he hopes to make the jump to the NFL, though not very likely for 95% of cellege players.

As a fan I love the USC philosophy. Earn your way or you don't play. It creates competiton adn makes the whole team better. The question is is it better to play for a dynasty or get playing time, see Matt Cassells to further clouds the issue. Never played a down at USC and is arguably the MVP of the NFL this year

This, I had to share.

Remember I alluded to something Head Coach Rick Neuheisel was doing with his coaching staff to help in recruiting.

I said that, in holding off in hiring Carnell Lake, it would benefit recruiting.

At the time, I couldn't tell you what it was. But now I can.

When DeWayne Walker left the staff, UCLA had a spot open on the coaching staff. Instead of rushing out and hiring Lake, Neuheisel was clever to take advantage of the situation.

He hired Vae Tata, the former UCLA player, as an assistant. Tata, of course, has deep ties to the Hawaiian community, and Tata spent a great deal of time recruiting for UCLA in Hawaii over the last month or so, and his effort was highly influential.

It was critical in UCLA getting Stan Hasiak, and without Tata UCLA wouldn't have had near as good a chance with Manti Te'o as they did (I've heard it was between Notre Dame and UCLA).

Neuheisel hiring Tata temporarily was entirely within NCAA rules.

It's just another instance that shows how smart and aggressive Neuheisel is at his job, and has become in regard to recruiting.

Clever.

UCLA is ranked #4.... it's been a long time! Outstanding job by Neu, Chow & Bob Palcic. It looks like former player Vai Tata had a lot to do with them landing those Hawaiian recruits. If the recruiting turns into "W's" on the field, the program will begin to (as it does at SC) recruit itself. Great day to be a Bruin!

Most of that was because we had a terrible offensive line that couldn't pass block or run block, which made both our QB and RBs look terrible. O-line was by far our biggest weakness last year, and we picked up a lot in that area.

We brought in some RB studs in last year's class in Dean and Knox, and as mentioned Thigpen this year is another good get.

Next year I assume we'll be better but mediocre, but by 2010 with another strong class we should be the #2 program in the Pac-10.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2009/02/neuheisel-era.html

We have Ramirez penciled in as the starter, after talking to some sources close to the program. The coaches were really excited about him last off-season before he was suspended for the season. He’s expected to be the bigger, slasher type. We fully expect Knox to be right there, and even if he isn’t the official starter, get significant playing time next season. He was probably the best tailback on the roster last year, but had to redshirt due to academic and other considerations. It will be interesting to see Coleman after his first off-season; we still believe he’s a fullback, but we’ll see. There were rumors Dean could transfer, but he’s telling everyone he’s definitely staying and putting in the work to get better, and get on the field. Carter is really going to have to show something this spring and fall or get left out of the rotation. Franklin was very impressive on the scout team, and he looks quite a bit bigger physically; he could, though, end up in the defensive backfield. Hilliard, too, could end up a defensive back. Thigpen’s speed will get him on the field, it’s just uncertain whether that will be at tailback or perhaps at defensive back. He’ll definitely get a look at kick-off returner as a true freshman, and on special teams, like on punt block.

Spoken with all the class that your bandwagon, converted Raider fanbase is known for. Speaking of not putting up a fight, recent history shows that it is SC that somehow finds a way to lose to a team or two each recent year that they, considering their recruiting dominance, have absolutely no business losing to. Pretty much what Rocky said here. I'm a Trojans fan, and it's all fun and games this early in the season but if you're not worried about UCLA this year, you're not paying attention. UCLA is changing direction and it's good for the conference and the rivalry. And like he said, the last three years they've lost games that they had NO business losing. How do you dismantle just about everyone you play like then ranked #5 Ohio State, then ranked #23 Oregon, and eventually then ranked #8 Penn State, but lose to Oregon State? Not to mention the Freshman QB, who has looked good so far, but not good enough for a championship or even Rose Bowl run.

Talking trash the week of the game in a thread about that game is one thing. To come into a thread about UCLA football two and a half months and do it is bad form.

Good on the Bruins for the road win.

They looked worst in the 2nd half when the offense wasn't eating clock--that's to be expected of a defense that lacks depth like ours.

The recruitment of Malcolm Jones (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) could be coming to an end shortly. Jones is down to Stanford and UCLA and just visited the Cardinal over the weekend.

"I just talked to him and he said he still likes UCLA," Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell said. "He liked Stanford and has some family pushing him there for the academics, but UCLA is where he wants to go.

"He told me a week ago he would have his decision made before October and today is the last day of September, so I know he should be getting close. If there's a family struggle going on, obviously it could take longer but as of today, he wants to go to UCLA."

Jones is one of the top backs in the West and a very talented linebacker prospect as well. In fact, some feel he may project better on the defensive side of the ball, although he wants to play running back in college.

Scout.com has Jones as the #6 RB in the country.

Minnesota Vikings vs. Green Bay Packers - Recap - November 01, 2009 - ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=291101009)

Rodgers answered by driving the Packers for a field goal, then Green Bay turned a fumbled kickoff into a 16-yard touchdown pass from Rodgers to tight end Spencer Havner to cut Minnesota's lead to 24-13.

Green Bay forced a three-and-out, and Rodgers hit James Jones for a 42-yard gain to put the Packers in scoring position again. Facing third-and-4 at the Vikings 5, Rodgers rolled right and threw another touchdown to Havner -- a converted linebacker who made the transition to tight end in training camp.

Interesting.
