I find it funny that I left to escape The Rinks at Anaheim to go to Glacial and it has caught right back up with me and the same issues over there have crept over here. I should've known than to trust something run by the Ducks (j/k... kind of).

I agree that the stick times are usually a gong show. They don't plan it well..sometimes you'll have the whole ice to yourself, and other times you won't have a place to skate, which defeats the purpose of stick time. When I went yesterday from one blue line to the goal was taken up by a goalie getting a lesson, and the rest was Parros and the gang running drills. Parros felt bad that I didn't have any ice which is when he invited me to run with them, but I can see how people can easily get shafted. Toyota's not as bad with leaving ice for those who pay for ST and not personal lessons.
Wow that was empty compared to Monday. Our group (with two coaches) had one side from the blueline to the goal, another group (another coach) had the middle of the ice between the blue lines, and it looked like another group (looked like a goalie lesson) had the hash marks to the goal on the other side. I saw two guys passing a puck back and forth between the hash marks and blue line (w/o a goal) and was wondering what was going on there. They were the only players without a coach, so I'm guessing those are the people who came for stick time that didn't come for a lesson.
I finally got to play with @eddieshack23 on Monday night and had a blast. I hadn't played roller in 2 years or so and I was eased back into with with a double-header, lol! We were up 4-1 in the first game, then lost 8-6, but in our second game we took the lead from the get-go and won 9-4. @eddieshack23 did some serious work putting in at least 4 goals I think in each game? I had 3 assists in the first game, and one goal in the second on a beautiful bang-bang play and pass from @eddieshack23 . The downside, I got some serious blisters, as my inline skates are too big. I stopped by GoalieMonkey today to visit my buddy Wyatt and picked up some Stable26 socks, I read great reviews about them and hope they help out with keeping my heels locked in. http://stable26.com
Nothing good to report other than I now have a reason to hate NAS, they had a show at the fox theater on sunday night and I drove around for 25 minutes looking for parking. Nothing, bupkis except for that street that was one street too far over (seriously when it goes from no parking spots to nobody parks there) so I actually drove home without playing. ****ing sucked.
Our roller team keeps rollin' through the competition, we had a nice 10-4 win last night. I lost track of how many goals @eddieshack23 had, but him and I had a nice two on 1 that resulted in some bang-bang passing and I netted a goal out of it. We moved the puck pretty well last night and I think I literally had 10-12 SOG (with 3 or 4 assists), I was aiming for the corners and just missed on most of them, changing it up from low to high.
I finally felt like I played up to my potential last night, my new Alkali RPD Team+ skates are feeling better and better each game, they are a dream to skate on! The transition from ice to roller took a little longer than I expected, but now I feel like I am where I should be in terms of my stick handling, passing, shooting, angles, etc.
I can't imagine going back to roller... Ice is just too much fun
btw been shelved for last week plus do to groin pull. Thought it was going to be better last weekend and I aggravated it getting out of the damnned car. Really hard to rehab these damn things when you're old.
I usually don't say this, but our goalie **** the bed on our playoff game. 3 softies man... I was shaking my head over them. Like I just said, I don't say this suff, but man oh man, it was a mess. I played in goal for soccer and water polo, so I would know when my game was off, and our netminder was way off. Our guy was slow on the low coverage to the opposite pipe on a wrap around, and that started off the scoring for the other team with 30 seconds in. To boot the other goalie was on top of his game and flashed the leather a couple times. We lost 6-5 in a heartbreaker.
Bummer... moving on to this Sunday. My other team starts the playoffs and hopefully we'll be able to gut it out.
No Fish, I'd tend to disagree with you about the groin pull. No to one-up you, but playing in the first game of the season last night I broke my right ankle in the last 40 seconds of the game. I sheared off the inside ankle bumps of both the tib and fib, dislocated my ankle in the process and tore a few ligaments. I'll take the groin pull any day of the week over this mess.
I'm out indefinitely boys. I'll have to live vicariously through your stories.
D
I hurt my-self two weeks ago not in the game. But pulling my bag out of my trunk afterwards at home. I think I tore or pulled my bicep pretty good. Almost back to normal maybe a few more days. Ugg sucks.
I played my first beer league game last night. It was also my first ice hockey game ever. We won 7-3. I scored an assist, drew a crosschecking penalty in front of the crease, and finished +4.
Congrats man! I hope you had a blast out there and didn't take it too seriously.
the team we played last night decided they had to get our goalie out of the game. He ended up in a fight and there was general chaos. Single ref who didn't really care about anything didn't help. I hope they were happy firing long distance shots into our empty net.
Tonight our new Rollerdaddy season kicks off, we won last season pretty convincingly. We moved up a level, so hopefully we don't get smoked! I'm looking forward to skating with @eddieshack23 and working some magic up front.
Man, that was brutal. 4-1 lead turns into an 8-7 OT loss.
That shouldn't have happened.
Hey man I may be the worst skater but damn I look good! It's a total blast playing on a fun team again. I was about to post a few weeks ago how down I was on league hockey and how pickup became my thing. On a side note, been playing a lot with that beauty Homer Simpson lately. Good times. Anyway, go Dead Deer!
Well our new season is two weeks old and so far so good in the upper division that we got moved up to. Last week we lost in overtime, and last night we edged out a team of dickheads that aren't used to losing, 4-3. Our regular goalie was out sick and a few guys were too pickled to play because they were watching the college football championship. The roster was looking slim with initially only 4 guys, I almost didn't play because only having 4 guys really sucks, especially for a 9:45pm game. We ended up with 6 skaters, game on! Our sniper @eddieshack23 rang the post at least 3 times last night and almost had a nice wrap around, banking it off the goalie. I ended up with 2 goals and one of them was the goal of my life, no joke, even two guys on their bench said, "wow, that was nice man" as I skated by back to our bench. (I hope that didn't sound arrogant, but I was really stoked on the goal!)
In case you are wondering about why this goal was the goal of my life, it went something like this. (as far as I can remember)
I received a pass coming out of our end, right around center rink. Skated it up the right wing side, but not necessarily along the boards, more towards the center area of the surface. I had one d'man in front of me and I forget who on our team was coming up the left side. Usually in those situations I will gain entry and snap a quick snapper through the D'man's leg on net. Well this time was no different except that as I looked towards our left winger (as if i was going to pass) I backhand toe-dragged the puck to my right (i'm a lefty) around the d'man and turned him inside out, I was then in alone on the goalie and I came in at an angle, fading to my left and as he started to open up to move to his right, I slid it in 5-hole. I couldn't believe I pulled it off!
we're a little over halfway through our winter season. Finally got back on the scoreboard this past sunday for what felt like the first time in forever. It was a strange goal which might be worth a share, not so much for the goal but the interaction.
I jumped up into the rush from D, took a pass at the blue line and from the right side dumped it straight at the boards. I jumped past the defender collected the puck at the right side of the net (it was dead, not rimmed) hit the brakes and popped back in front of the net. The goalie was standing straight up in front of me and I still don't know what he was looking at but I stuffed it home and got cleaned out by the D. As I was getting up I noticed the goalie just staring at me and I said to him "Dude I thought you were gonna drop down" he said back to me "I have no idea where you came from". He must have lost the puck completely on the dump or something but he was still utterly confused how I magically appeared in front of the net with it. We won the game and he made some great stops along the way but it was one of those fun moments.
I play at TSC. They decided to take a 7-year hiatus (or like 4 weeks, somewhere in between there) for the holidays so I don't get to play again until next weekend.
It's been so long I can barely remember what the ice smells like...
What division and what nights are worth playing over there now? I'm toying with the idea again of playing, after being bashed to death by my 9 year old to do it, but I'm tentative. The 40 and over seems to be stacked with former NHLers, and the lower levels look like they would frustrate the piss outta me. I'm not going to go end to end at any point, I just want to be able to pass someone the puck that's not going to eat it.
We won again last night against a team that we lost to in week one, and were ahead 4-1 and eventually lost.
Overall we played alright but there was an abundance of no-look, backhand passes into la-la land committed by our team that luckily did not bite us in the ass.
@eddieshack23 , any chance we can change up the lines a bit up front, maybe rotate forward partners each period? what i'm getting at is that i need more time with you out there! it would be fun to connect out there with some good scoring opportunities. last night i set larry a few times that should have at least resulted in a SOG but nothing developed. :(
No to Bay Harbor. Back in the day, I was comfortable at any level, I just played in different role the higher up I went. Now? I'd probably be fine at Bronze and could probably handle it in Silver after a few games of sucking. Sounds like I want where you are playing now.
Then you should see a certain fellow Mod , who captains my team. I know we've had problems in the past getting guys to show, so maybe you could start out as a sub to get back into the swing of things. Things seem to have improved with guys showing up, though, so you'd have to talk to him.
It is mid-season. Not sure if you could jump on full-time at this point. New Season starts May/June.
Another OT loss for us last night. The game started off decent enough, we were up 2-0 and then let them back in. It eventually was tied up, then we traded goals and ended up in a 3-3 tie I believe. We switched up the forward lines a bit which I felt helped out, it allowed some of us to play together and get some SOG. In the 2nd period I had a goal disallowed. Basically their goalie went to dive to cover the puck and one of our players had poked it right before the goalies glove completely covered it, so it squirted out to me and I shoveled it in, right after it crossed the goal line the ref blew the whistle. Imho it should have counted, but no biggie, it is just mens 40+ roller hockey, so I wasn't going to argue. Later in the 3rd I had picked up a lost puck by their d'man about 8 feet out in the slot, as I drifted to my right, and leaned into a backhand shot (I'm a lefty) and was going 5-hole. The goaltender dropped and as I crashed the net to follow my shot I saw it was sitting on the goal line, literally straddling it. Due to the goalie's positioning and their d'man pushing me away from the net (towards the end boards, as he should) I was unable to get my stick on it and tap it in, it was the most helpless feeling everrrrr.
Their goalie played great, and was fairly aggressive, came out to challenge shooters and handled the puck very well. He robbed me at least two or three times when I was ripping top shelf snappers, I did manage to net one though when our d'man carried the puck in the zone, circled behind the net and found me at the mid slot all alone, he passed it and I zapped it.
All in all it was a great game. They had fantastic passing and I thought we were in trouble at the beginning of the game due to this. It led to a lot of chasing the puck by us. But then we took the early lead and I was feeling better. @eddieshack23 and I never got to play a full period together up front, hopefully next game we can. We did get a shift or two together in which we had a couple SOG.
So far our team is doing just fine in the upper division, we have two regulation wins, and two overtime losses.
Played back to back games for the first time since I don't know when Sunday. First game (lower level playing D for both) I picked up a puck at the blue line that squirted back. Looked at the net and the goalie came out as there was no screen but one of my guys was to the right of the net (tangled up) so I figured I'd fire it that way and see if he could get a stick on it. Well the puck kinda stuck to my blade a bit (not sure if it rolled or something) so I ended up lifting it waist high on accident smacking the defenseman in the ass and getting a goal out of it. Wasn't exactly the way I planned it but the concept was sound right?
Only bad news was my groin got gimpy by the end of the first game so in the second game I was trying to nurse it a bit. Got a puck wide on a bad line change for the other team but I knew I didn't want to try and rush the puck in. I saw the goalie charging out to set himself for the break so I said **** it and just fired a slapper about a foot off the ice short side. Caught the goalie totally off guard and he whiffed badly trying to butterfly and get his blocker down.
Hopefully I can keep this thing stretched and keep strengthening it over the next few weeks. Nagging groins are the worst.
****VENTING*****
So we played the second place team last night, a real solid group no ringers. Lost the game 4-2. The refs though had a call that just boggled the mind (there were several but this took the cake). Our team had a standard regroup, swung D passes and then caught the center flying up the middle on a curl. He cut to split the D at the blue line but one of their D men stands him up (this is a non checking league). Our center is a big boy and their D was not and as a result the D got knocked down but he did knock our center off the puck. Our winger cuts behind the play to grab the loose puck whistle blows. Everyone is confused thinking maybe there's an offsides call..... Nope elbowing on our center.
I missed my last two games because I was sick, but finally got back on the ice yesterday.
After being down 1 or 2 goals for the entire game, we rallied in the 3rd to tie the game 3-3 only to lose in the ensuing shootout. This marks our second overtime loss this season giving us a 2-0-2 record so far.
Overall, I felt like I played like crap. Still being on the tail end of the cold that won't go away, I had no lungs and no legs. I felt like I was constantly out of position and nothing but a liability when I was out on the ice. On the upside though, they recorded an assist for me, even though I don't remember touching the puck at all before the goal in question. At least it made up for the actual assist they didn't give me in game one when we were still waiting for our team jerseys with numbers to be ready.
