    Default The Big Question about Tyler Madden

    Tyler Madden is a very interesting prospect:

    Son of a successful, champion NHLer;
    Great pair of hands;
    Dangerous shot;
    Good overall hockey sense.
    Excellent NCAA stats.

    But there is 1 HUGE question-mark that could loom large over his career aspirations:

    At 5'11" tall, he weighs only about 155 lbs.

    I can find absolutely NO LISTING that has him above 155.

    Also, it needs to be mentioned, that while he does have good quickness/agility and some shiftiness
    with the puck, he definitely does not possess breakaway speed, that I have seen.

    I've watched tons of highlight videos of him, many impressive, but have yet to find even ONE
    where he shows breakaway speed.

    In the spirit of full disclosure:
    (NOTE: If anybody finds such a video, PLEASE post the link here on this thread)

    In comparison, guys like Lizotte and Iafallo are MUCH faster skaters, from what I have seen.

    Also, Madden is 20 and turns 21 in November, so (relative to his size) he's got some physical maturity.
    And yet he's still 155 lbs.

    It''s not like he's 18 anymore----Hard to believe he'll ever be more than 160 lbs, at this point.

    The big question:
    Can a player of that weight make it in the NHL without breakaway speed?

    Guys like Johhny Gaudreau (165 lbs) are super-small, but can skate like the wind.
    I haven't seen Madden doing that.

    Can he make it?
    Or is he just too darn skinny and light, without enough speed to compensate?

    He is a liability and, well you know the rest!

    Have to be able to laugh at times like these. In all seriousness, you raise very good points about him. The upcoming season (however it happens) will be very important for him to establish himself.

    Yeah, yeah! And also, his uncle Steve made shoes and was in that movie with Margot Robbie and the kid from The Aviator.
