    Default Bjornfot ELC Decide soon

Foot is now at 4 games played. His ELC kicks in at 9 I think. Arguably this year is a throw away partial season. Giving the kids experience. Playoffs or not we don't have the rest of the tools to make it far. The kid has looked good during his cup of coffee last season and has fit right in this season. Only gaff I could see was 2/20 in Arizona on the boards where he got crunched by Pitlick. This is a rookie learning the speed. This can be learned with time at this level. The rest of his game looks good. Smart jumping into the O zone, tenacious defending in his own zone, clean outlet passes. But still learning and I understand you can only learn those things at this level. My eyes see the value of Willie Mitchel with a little O upside.
Questions are do we keep him up and burn the first year ELC? Cap him with 3-4 games left and bring him up late in the season or playoffs if we make it? Or shelf him in AHL and he is a stay in the NHL next year?

i thought it was less than 9, like 7. I think they send him back down. As soon as walker is back he's going back down id imagine.

By the time his ELC is complete, and barring any major free agent signing(s), the Kings will not be struggling with their salary cap. Bjornfot will become an RFA in '23-'24. By then, the Phaneuf hit will be done. Carter's and Brown's contracts ($11M) come off after this year. The Mike Richards hit drops from $900K to $700K in '23-'24.

There are a few Kings who will be unrestricted free agents prior to that year. Iafallo will be a UFA after next season. Cal Peterson, Brown, Carter, Frk, Maata, MacDermid are UFA in '22-'23. Jonathan Quick becomes a UFA the same year that Bjornfot's ELC is done. Kopitar becomes a UFA in '24-'25.

On the other hand, there are a number of RFA signings that will be required:

    '21-'22:
    Athansiou
    Lizotte
    Moore
    Amadio
    Luff
    Strand
    Roy
    Andersson, L
    Imama
    Rymsha

    '22-'23:
    Kempe
    Vilardi
    Anderson-Dolan
    Grundstrom
    Anderson, M

    '23-'24:
    Wagner
    Bjornfot
    Kupari

But all in all, I see no reason not to go ahead and keep Bjornfot on the big club. He's performing well, and as to his next contract, unless he becomes an undisputed #1 d-man, he's not likely to get more than $3.5M per. Keep him and let him learn the big league ropes . . . in my oh-so-humble opinion.

I say keep him. I'm not advocating bringing up all the kids but there are a couple that appear ready right now, Tobi being one of them.

    I’m on the keep-him side.

His fumble against AZ makes me want him to stay up even more. That was a problem with decision making. He has the NHL tools already, so keep him up to really learn the NHL speed.

If you can bring him up, and there's no issues with exposing somebody to the expansion draft, and there's no issues with exposing guys to waivers unnecessarily, then yeah sure. Keep him up. But i don't really see the need to keep him up in a shortened season like this, especially if he can continue to round out his game in the AHL free of charge.

I'd say keep him. The objective for this year is to see what we have in the pipeline. So play the guy and see if he's NHL ready or not. So far it looks like he is. If Blake thinks March Bjornfot will be the same as February Bjornfot, then keep him in LA.

One contrarian thought on the cap hit could be that maybe when you extend him in 2023 it would be 3.5x5 years but 2024 would be 4.7x5 years because he's establishing himself as a top pairing guy.

Who remembers the rules about first year players and the Kraken draft? I’ve forgotten since the Vegas thievery...

Players who have accrued two or fewer years of professional play at the end of '20-'21 will be exempt from the expansion draft. Bjornfot will be exempt.
