Anybody know what would happen if Carter retires at the end of the season? Is there a significant recapture penalty a la Luongo?

Wow, that's crazy! Whoever put this together did a great job. That's like tracing your family tree back to the stone age.

    Thanks for posting that!

With the Kings retaining 50% of Carter's salary, if he retires after this year, the recapture penalty would be $3.1 million next year (still less than the $5.27 million AAV cap hit).:

Still better than a buyout, because the Kings won't be hurting for cap space next year, and after next season, Carter will be off the books in any event.

semi related, but per mayors manor...

As we understand things, the current plan is to call Quinton Byfield up for one of those spots early next week when the Kings return home from Colorado. He will taxi with the team during the week and then is roughly targeted for his NHL debut on April 26.
Its an interesting article too, explaining some of the restrictions now in effect on calling players up and sending players down to the AHL. TLDR: Kings only have 3 more call ups this season (some special cases apply).

The inability now to send down Wolanin, Luff, Bjornfot, etc., might have been an issue, but given that the Reign will almost certainly miss the playoffs, it doesn't really matter.

i think the real issue, as it pertains to the Kings, is that they won't be able to give guys maybe as many opportunities as they could have to start the season. Obviously the context is different now with them all but out of the playoff picture, but there are going to be prospects that probably deserve a bit of time with the team that may not get it.

Carter has said numerous time, including this week that he has no intention of retiring before his contract is up.
