I'll forget about him when Fiala scores 80 points in a season haha.
We already have a Willie Mitchell type guy.. his name is Matt Roy. Why is everyone in such a hurry to trade that guy?

Aside from Clarke, any other glaring omissions from this tournament for the Kings? I realize Byfield likely wasn’t released by the organization otherwise he would’ve been playing for Canada. I think most of our other gems have aged out. Aside from Kirsanov not playing because of Russia’s exclusion, maybe Chromiak? Why’s he not playing for Slovakia?

On the other hand, I continue to be impressed by Simontaival in these tournaments. I hope the Kings make an effort to sign him to an ELC, and bring him over to the AHL. I feel he’s going to be one of those guys who always finds a way to contribute points, even at higher levels of play. Reminds me of a Donald Audette type.. smaller and scrappy, but he seems to have no qualms about going to the tough areas to score and distribute.

Not that I advocate for trading Roy, but Jammer is spot on on this one. Roy is no where near the level that Mitchell was during the cup victories, and likely never will be.

By what metric? Points? Plus/minus? Advanced stats? Or just the good old fashioned ‘eye test’?

Just my opinion, but the loss of Mitchell in 2013 was the difference between Cups in 2012 and 2014 and no Cup in 2013 - he excelled in key defensive situations and made the team around him, potentially including his goalie, better. Nothing against Roy, but Mitchell was a truly unique player that despite his shortcomings offensively remained a solid two way force deep into his career and someone you'd want out there when the game was on the line.

Below is an excerpt from an article written during his time, later, with the Panthers, but a good read all the same:

"It's also worth noting that the 39-year-old defenseman is something of a statistical outlier, in that Mitchell is the rare no-offense defender who has legitimately remained effective as a two-way force in the NHL into his late-30s.

The data, for example, would suggest that from 2007 through to 2012 Mitchell always faced the toughest matchups among blue-liners and started the highest proportion of his shifts in the defensive zone. He generally fared very well by the shot-based metrics despite battling through consistently tough circumstances.

One final data-based note: Mitchell arguably has a unique skill for disrupting the cycle and clearing loose pucks with his oft-commented-on long reach. Based on the Panthers' captain's persistent high on-ice save percentage, it's possible that he's among a very rare group of players (that really only includes him and Boston Bruins defender Zdeno Chara) who have a persistent impact on even-strength save percentage."

If you want they very short eye test look no further than the absence of Willie during the 2013 season, and the further departure after 2014. If you need a more convoluted eye test, the benefit of Willie to Slava and Ekblads performance.
I will allow that Roy is now finally of the age that Mitchell was when he suddenly became very important but not so important that a gm was going to pay him for it. But he is signing behind "the piece" and for all the jokes that entailed it was scuds that played with Doughty. All that said Roy is a footnote in that discussion. Mitchell had put up (10 goals in a single playoff, which is rarefied air) nope read that part drunk. But he had eaten **** loads of playoff minutes in deep runs. . Roy is unproven at best, or proven that in playoffs action he needs to have Doughty (or the idea of) to be worth his minutes
