Very clearly a response to Montreal giving Aho an offer sheet in 2019 , they gave KK a TWENTY dollar signing bonus. Aho's number.
a 1 year deal at $6,100,015, the 15 is kk's number. It will cost them a 1st and a 3rd if Montreal lets him go. He is 20 years old and a former 3rd overall pick. It will put Montreal over the cap by 8 million if they match.

They issued the EXACT same press release that Montreal did!

Context and a Reversed hand with middle finger extended to MTL. This is the SAME quote Bergevin issued when MTL signed Aho to an OS:
"Sebastian Aho accepted our offer. He wants to come to MTL. He sees our youngsters coming up in the org & he wants to be a part of that. We're proud, but there's still a waiting period."

Canes GM Waddell: "Jesperi Kotkaniemi accepted our offer. He wants to come to Carolina. He sees the core we?ve built here and he wants to be a part of that. We?re proud, but there?s still a waiting period. When you make an offer like that, we saw a vulnerable position.? (1/2)

Ha Ha. This is why LA WON'T offer sheet Sergachev, or anyone else. Soon our kids will be RFA's and teams remember.

Good, offer sheets are a dirty proposition and tarnishes a GM's reputation.

Blake should dust off his hipcheck on any GM that tries to poach one of our players. Even the crappy ones, lol.

If you want a player you sit at the table none of this underhanded shenanigans. :Dancing_mad:

I listened to Brian Burke talk about offer sheets and he had no problem with them. Didn't think they were underhanded or broke some unwritten code. He thought not calling the opposing GM before making the offer was bull**** but that they're all part of the game.

Burke was upset at Kevin Lowe for that very reason when Lowe signed Pancakes to that contract. I think Burke wanted fight him in a barn or some such. DL also threatened any GM who would come after his players...not in the same way....but still....it worked.

jom

I remember the Burke interviews differently. He came across as if he was fine with offer sheets. Not that he "liked" them, but it's not like it would cause him to stop dealing with another GM.

People used to fight over Penner?

And Montreal should let them choke on it. If KK were signed for 2 years $12M (then UFA), Montreal would be fortunate to get that 1st and 3rd.

The Aho offer sheet was a bargain for the Canes. The owner didn't like it because it cost $21M the 1st year.

I think you're missing the long term projection. Sign him away at an affordable overpayment for 1 year then sign him to a market value contract after this season.

I think it's a brilliant move.

And if the Habs don't want to lose their 21 yr old former 3rd overall they'll have to trade $6.1M in salary to keep him (or pull a Kucharev and hide that much).

How in the world is there any real downside to the Canes?

1st, his draft position is a sunk cost.

2nd, why would KK sign for $3M? He gets 6M or UFA.
(His actual market value is estimated at $2.5M)

The downside for Carolina is they gave up their 1st and 3rd for 2 years of a mediocre player at $6M per.
Their upside may be 5yrs x $5M of a decent 2nd line center for a 1st and 3rd. But recognize the downside.

So you seriously wouldn't trade a 1st + a 3rd for a 1 year risk of Kotkaniemi at $6.1M, with the very likely possibility that both picks will be very late in each round?

And who said anything about him signing for $3M? He'll play out the year, be an RFA, and they'll work out a new bridge deal.

And sure there's downside. He could be another Drouin. But he could just need a kick in the ass like Ehlers and blossom.

Seems like you've already decided he's a flop.

Next year, the tender STARTS at $6.1 million.

Sure, but there's almost no way in hell they tender him and let him walk into UFA. They either sign him long term or let him walk.

IMO it's a great risk for a 21 yr old with his upside.

Agree with this take. KK is getting ready to take the next step. I don't think Montreal lets Daneault walk unless they know one of the 2 kid centers will be 1C and the other will be 2C. I like the move because the #24 and a late 3rd is worth it for a roll of the dice. Carolina will still own 3 RFA years so they can negotiate and even trade him away. I think it is a gamble worth taking, especially to mess with Montreal. I also can't figure out if KK is a late bloomer and/or held down by the Carolina offensive system. But for where Carolina is contender-wise, plus KK's draft pedigree, plus the fact that he's been improving, I would make the offer too.

If I ever see Blake wasting his time with this petty revenge crap, I hope it's his last day as our GM. It seems pretty short-sighted too. Eventually, Carolina will be in this position again with a player like Aho and I guess Montreal does it again?

This was the owner's idea apparently, not the GM's.
