Per the Mayor, who had previously said Athanasiou wouldn't be qualified, but the Kings still wanted to re-sign him. Apparently close to a new deal so they decided to qualify him so other teams can't try to negotiate with him.

Andersson, Clague, Strand, Moverare and Burke (the AHL guy we traded for over the weekend) were also qualified.

That's great news! Glad to (hopefully soon) see AA, Andersson, Clague and Strand back. It would have been a shame to let AA walk.

So they gave up on finding something better? Right out of the gate- no the gate hasn't even opened yet, has it?

Ok then.

Wow, I didn't know both free agency ending and the trade deadline happened today.

Not yet. Rumors are they are in the hunt for Phillip Danault.

Qualifying him and the apparent impending signing of him, basically signals this ^^^ up here

Some of these posts on here are funny. Don?t ever change LGK boards. :yourock:

I genuinely don't understand this kind of thinking. Re-signing AA doesn't prevent them from going after Landeskog, Schwartz, Danault, or any other UFA. And it only makes them MORE able to trade for someone like Tarasenko or Wennberg.

Yep, his signing means nothing with regards to going after a big name. Only "The Plan" will keep them from doing that.

Meh. I'd rather roll w/ the centers we have then spend money on a 28 year old who hasn't scored more than 13 goals in a season.

Yeah, would be a bit of a head scratcher other than he plays the game like Kopi. May not score a ton but is up there in assists most seasons. I question whether we need another guy like Kopi though unless you are very confident he will generate a lot of scoring with his two wingers.

You guys remember this next year when they start to talk about re-signing Brown

and don't forget to tell Arty that he & his friends can stay home

A few things I've heard about this.

1. Kopi and Doughty and made it very clear that they want to compete sooner than later. In the next couple seasons the kids don't help with that. Sure, the Kings could say f-you to them and p*ss them off, but is that really how to treat them?
2. Bringing in an elite defensive center takes a ton pressure off Kopi as the only other top defensive center. That allows him to play less of those tough minutes so he can play better overall...and this worked great for Brown last season.
3. Signing him now is also a play for the future. If you sign him for 6 years and a kid proves he can take his spot, great! Trade one of them.

I'm too old to remember stuff like this.

That's understandable and all but, as Vegas just proved, you do what's best for the team not the player.
They chose the Big $ to stay knowing what was coming, or should have known.

Perhaps "knowing" what was coming was a quick turnaround. Perhaps Blake promised more help in a short time frame, and hasn't delivered. Suggesting that they should have known what was coming assumes we know anything about what was discussed during those extensions.

Based on Doughty's comments, I fully believe that the players felt the turnaround was coming sooner than later.

that would be my take as well.

My biggest fear is that Kopi and Doughty will be in the final year of their contracts before this team is overly competitive again. They, and the fanbase, deserve much more. As I've said in a previous post, this current lineup isn't going to put butts in seats unless guys like Byfield, Thomas, Kaliyev, Bjornfot, etc. somehow get a chance to play AND create excitement.

I agree, but what does Doughty expect him to do? He probably looked into Reinhart but didn't want to spend a 1st + for one year and/or didn't like the price Reinhart's camp is looking for in his next contract.

Stick w/ the plan Blake - DL had to wait until Summer 2011 to make the big splash.
