First off, there is no rumor of this happening, simply a suggestion by one of the Athletic writers. Just wondering would you do Rielly for Kempe and I assume some picks? I wouldn't without an extension, which I would say is unlikely, but it's summer so might as well put it out there.

Rielly is a class below some other recent players in that role, such as Victor Hedman and Alex Pietrangelo. But with Jake Muzzin and T.J. Brodie signed for the foreseeable future, perhaps the Leafs can have a strong enough group with their top three D, with Rielly leading the pack as Kris Letang Lite?

Or could the Leafs have interest in 24-year-old Adrian Kempe, a top-six forward with a $2 million cap hit next season, as part of a package from the Kings?

With an extension I would do it. However it depends on how much is added w/ Kempe..

Agreed, Rielly would be an awesome addition provided he is willing to sign a reasonable extension - just depends on the cost it takes to acquire him.

Kempe is so hot and cold. I would not mind him in any trade package.

Leafs couldn't take on much more than Kempe for him. Maybe Kempe and Durzi (or MacDermid) They need a RD and also toughness. Kempe would make good sense cuz he's affordable and they fear they will lose Kerfoot in expansion.
If we could talk to Reilly about an extension, I would do this because of the abundance of forwards we have.

Definitely consider.
Would they like a half priced, heavily used, former Conn Smythe winner along with Kempe?

For starters i wouldn't do it without an extension. Kings are in no position to trade assets for rentals. Two, this doesn't strike me as the way you reward your team. We have a stockpile of assets and were going to trade away one of our top forwards after he's had his best season to date? If you want to build a culture, this isn't how you do it.

Also, Kempe's Hot and Cold I can live with because he is still 24 years old. And on a nice contract. Last year he wasn't as cold as he's been. His numbers translated to a career high pace.
I'd like to see what he can do with Arvidsson

I'd offer Kempe and Helga Grans, plus a low draft pick (5th-7th round), at maximum.

Actually, if needed to close the deal, I'd add Jet Jaguar.

Hurts to give up Grans as he projects to fill a need and Kempe as he has progressed every season and likely will keep getting better over the next few seasons, but this seems like a steal for the Kings.

Kempe has played 300 nhl games. Don't think he has another level in him. 20-20-40 guys have value, but I wouldn't expect multiple 30-30-60 seasons in his future.

Yeah he's going to have to suddenly start shooting a whole lot more if he wants to hit 30. IMO its not his hands that hold him back from being a 30 goal scorer. It's his lack of shot attempts. The good news is his shots per game have gone up the last two seasons. So maybe giving him a more skilled 5-on-5 Center like Byfield will inspire him to shoot more.

Shots per game:
17-18 1.47
18-19 1.47
19-20 2.14
20-21 2.27

It's hard to teach vision/hockey sense, which are Grans' weak areas (as pointed out by multiple scouts).

I suppose those were also Jake Muzzin's weak areas as well (and the reason he flopped with Pittsburgh),
and the Kings were able to fix those, so perhaps there is hope.

But I'll tell you right now,
Brock Faber>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Grans.

IMO, I doubt that will ever change.

Kempe is a fast, 35-40-pt guy who plays a nice 2-way game and has some size.

That's enough for me.

Ya' gotta' accept reality.

Kempe is TWENTY-FOUR!! Not exactly peaked yet.

Grans is the guy I'd be offering up in packages for an established Dman. He looks absolutely braindead in transition. Who was the L.A. Raiders' cornerback in the early 90's they used to call "toast" bc he got beat on nearly every play?

Ok, I looked it up, Elvis "toast" Patterson. That's Helge Grans.

Faber will be 100x the player.

People always underestimate just how early NHL players hit their peak. The average NHL player's absolute peak performance is at age 23, although the decline from 23 to 25 is usually minimal. Odds are that we have already seen the best Kempe will ever be.

With Muzzin...it was more of a back injury sidelining him more than anything...
