Gavrikov extension rumors

Elliotte really drives a lot of chatter these days...

I liked the chatter on making a decision on Spence vs Clarke this summer. Blake (or replacement) will need to figure out his top 4 D.
A 7 year extension for Gavrikov is exactly the type of deal I can see Blake offering. Only question is will he go up to 7M AAV on 7 years term. I bet he will.

For a player who has been pretty ineffective in the playoffs (not to mention that signs him through the age of 36), that seems like a risky gamble. There are better defensemen out there who are currently signed for less so if Blake does 7/7 then it just seems desperate.

Maybe that contract would age well, but for a defenseman with size who can't play physical I just don't see it.

Mayor was estimating an AAV at $6.4 which also seems a bit on the high side but not too bad.

Will it matter? Signing Gavi to a long term extension will do nothing for the team. I would rather have young players play and learn the NHL game. Can't be any worse than it is now. A loss is a loss

The Benchrates tweet made it sound like 5.5-6 million. If Blake does 7x7, then he deserves to be fired (he does already). Either Gavrikov should get the extended term or fair market value, but not both. The Gaborik deal where we overpaid in years to get the AAV down ended up being a mess. I could see this doing the same thing in the latter years.

Yeah, I'd hope it was closer to 6. I feel like the Mayor is a mouthpiece for an org. They leak stuff to him and let him push it out to gauge the response in the hockey community and the fanbase.

Well, looks like I'm going to have to be one of the candidates to let Gavy go and leave the Kings. 7 mil for a stay-at-home D-man is asking a lot when he provides rather limited production in the O-zone. Plus, doing that will leave no room for other D-men to sign or make the roster on the blue line, especially in Clarke's case. Blake is trying to channel post-2014 era Lombardi with this type of signing and that's definitely a bad thing.

I like Gavrikov, but he just isn't the kind of player you need to give that kind of term. 4 years, sure. 7 would be a terrible decision.

This the right way to view Hoven. I don’t think he knows nearly as much as he thinks he does otherwise he wouldn’t attach “breaking news” to tweets about the new helmet sponsor. But it’s clear enough when it’s a legit team leak. Gavrikov shouldn’t make a dollar more than Matt Roy at 5.5M, but if it goes up to a low 6 I can stomach it.

More compelling part of that article is Hoven’s insistence that Clarke isn’t getting traded and next years lineup we’ll see Gavrikov back on the left side with Mo as the 7th D. Sounds right, but we could have exactly that situation right now and we don’t. I want to believe.

The main problem I have with Mayor's AAV assessment is in his own article he compares Gav to better defensemen who are currently in the 5-5.5 AAV range. The 5.75 he is currently on seems more than fair for an extension, as most of us feel he was signed at an overpriced rate to begin with.

Of course, I would be willing to change my mind if he has a strong showing the playoffs this year and demonstrates and ability to deliver physical play without ended up consistently out of position. Hi speed, and lack of offensive ability, still seems like an issue when it comes to wanting anything over 6.

All those deals were signed before the Cap increases were about to see over the next couple years. Add 10-15% to account for Cap inflation and 15% to make up for LA taxes and suddenly a 5.8M d-man has a 7+ AAV. Get ready for the sticker shock now because 7x7 is going to be the deal that gets him to stay.

I sure as hell wouldn’t pay him that but I wouldn’t have paid Joel Edmundson 4 x 3.85 either but Rob Blake knows best.

It's going to be interesting to see how quickly the NHL prices out their fans (many fans have already been priced out come playoff time). I really wonder what the long-term plan is.

At the start of the season I definitely would not have given that term and dollar amount to Edmundson either, but he’s been a pleasant surprise at that cost. We will see if the same can be said for years two through four of that contract.

I don’t think Gavrikov will ever live up to a 7 mill contract, by comparison, even if it is only a 2 year deal. That’s about the extent to which I would be comfortable with management giving him anything about 5.5-6 a season. Long term? No f***ing way.

Edmundson based on his play has been a steal at $3.85M

For a guy who panics with the puck in the o-zone and couldn't hit a soccer net?

Someone above Blake please open your eyes to what he is doing and stop it.

I don't think it's a Gavrikov hater thing, it's a GM that doesn't know how to handle a salary cap. Gavrikov most definitely deserves to be resigned, but how much more can you afford to give him? It becomes a decision between resigning him and not being able to improve or use the current salary to improve during the off season.

Doughty $11,000,000.00
Gavrikov $5,875,000.00 G 3 A 18 Pts 21
Anderson $4,100,000.00 G 6 A 11 Pts 17
Edmundson $3,850,000.00 G 5 A 9 Pts 19

Defensive minded defensemen don't warrant these types of salary
