However bad you thought the Coyotes are, it's actually worse

"Within the Coyotes offices at Gila River Arena, the new ownership?s methods raised eyebrows. Several employees felt there was a lack of understanding about what makes running an NHL team, which operates as a community asset and relies on long-standing partnerships and relationships, different from a private business. The cost-cutting measures that may have cushioned the bottom line of the Meruelo Group?s other business ventures ? the group?s CFO once bragged about drilling down on the cost of napkins ? have different implications within an NHL franchise."

"In July, after prospect Tyler Steenbergen did not receive his bonus on time, his agent, Rick Valette, sent a strongly worded email (the contents of which were shared with The Athletic) to the team over what he called a ?serious breach? of contract."

?They basically took how they managed radio stations, pizza chains and casinos and used that same playbook for a hockey team,? said one former employee.

?They default on a bill and then chisel you down to what you accept and then they pay you,? said one vendor.

"After delivering a lecture on journalism ethics, Armstrong [Arizona's GM] asked this reporter what she thought would happen if he were to tell general managers around the league how she did her job.

It's amazing how so many people believe business has to be a gathering of *******s for success...

NHL should have done the right thing and folded that franchise. Bettman kept beating the drum. City has no money, and it's not a money making franchise. Fanbase is limited at best.

I really think their biggest mistake was moving out to Glendale. They've missed out on every other city centers boost over the last twenty years.

I never bought that. I think that's an excuse. 20 miles from downtown Phoenix is not the issue. Westgate Entertainment District is pretty much LA Live right next to the Arena.

Arizona Cardinals do fine across the street in their stadium. MLB spring training at camel back ranch brings in a ton of people.

The real story is that there is and never was a significant market for hockey in Arizona. Period. End of Story.....IMHO.

Cardinal games are 8 per year and can largely be seen as an all day event. That experience is nothing akin to 42 home games

Spring training is a tourist driven event that might be unique in sports.

The issue with that 20 miles is simply that it gives a large portion of the metro area an excuse not to go. Winning cures alot, but making money while you lose needs several factors in your favor and that location isn't one of them.

In any case they have their hands full without shooting themselves in the dick by bleeding every nickel out of their own vendors. Companies like that get a PITA charge from me.

If you can't get people to go a measly 20 miles to see your sport, they don't want to see your sport.
20 miles is not much of an ask. The Phoenix Metro Area is massive urban sprawl. Once city bleeds into the other with no visible boundaries.
They could draw fans from 0-35 miles, but they don't. Why? Arizona is not a hockey hot bed. Never was. Never will be.

The league tried for 25 years to force a square peg in a round hole.
At some point they will admit defeat and move/fold the franchise.

Remember, Phoenix/Arizona was never the first choice for the Jets move; it was Minneapolis-St. Paul.

Moving the Yotes to the Central next season may be the death knell for the franchise.

The raiders couldnt fill the LA coliseum with 5 million people within 20 miles. LA is clearly not an NFL market

Comparing why Al Davis and the Raiders left LA to the Yotes situation for the last 25 years?
[scratches head]
I’m not sure if you are joking.

If you want to talk NFL and LA, then yes, LA is not a football town.
When both teams left LA nobody really cared.
Rams come back...meh. No rabid fan base, but they have an amazing stadium for corporate season seats and Lux boxes.
LA for football is a great corporate market. Casual fan base in LA is filled with transplants that will attend the games.

NFL and NHL don’t operate even remotely on the same level.
NHL needs local fan base for game day revenue. NFL does not.
TV revenue ranks supreme for the NFL.

NHL has a joke of a TV contract. They need the local fan base desperately for game day revenue.

Oh and the Chargers come to LA....crickets.

For some reason I bought into the idea that driving to the Coyotes arena was a lot to ask until I compared it to how far we have to drive to Staples Center. Anyone driving from Long Beach, or the San Fernando Valley, or the City Of Industry is driving as far to Staples as someone driving from downtown Phoenix to Gila River Arena. And if someone from a more eastern city like Mesa or Chandler goes to the arena, it’s like someone from Thousand Oaks, Ontario, or Irvine going to Staples. A long drive sure but it can be done even on a weeknight. Locating the arena in downtown might have helped. So would having financial stability. So would having a winning franchise. But they’ve had none of these. Even though I think it’s stupid to have fans at the arena right now, it’s pretty sad on their part to have that many Kings fans there when they’re only selling 3000 tickets. When does the league cut it’s losses & relocate this franchise?
