I was just looking up comparisons between this team and the 05-06 team as I feel there are some similarities. That was the end of the Taylor era that produced so little (though more than this one)

Anyway turns out that 20 years ago today, fhe Kings got blown out by the Sabres 10-1 and it is thought this was a turning point where ownership started to see the failure of the Taylor era rebuild. The year ended with a house cleaning and the hiring of Dean Lombardi.

Are we seeing something similar? Are we going
to have the epic collapse that team had and hire someone to build this thing properly?

That team was actually better at this point, but the collapse was imminent.

Short sighted me wants them to win but long term… hard to want this to continue.

I would rather see them rebuild with a good GM. Fiala, Kempe, QB, and Kuemper could get some nice high first round picks. Kempe alone is probably worth a top 3 1st rounder at his age and cap friendly contract. I haven’t looked to see if he has a NMC though.

Culture is number one. Lombardi preached that but then hurt it himself, in my opinion with the Richards and Voynov debacles.

I’ve liked this team since 1988 and I can’t tell you what it means to be an LA King, other than - you’re going to lose… a lot.

This season feels like a cross between the 05-06 and 14-15 seasons. Why I brought up the 14-15 season comparison is due to the maddeningly frustrating OT losses the Kings often suffered, especially in the SO. Though the Kings had the excuse of Voynov being suspended for his DV incident the start of that season; this season, there's no excuse other than Luc, Blake, and Hiller sabotaging this team's culture and it shows in this current iteration's Kings. This is looking to be even worse than the 05-06 and 14-15 seasons combined.

Not sure I'd go that far with the fire sale. Kuemper and potentially Fiala are worth quite a lot, Moore, Perry, Kuzmenko, Edmundson are also worth at least a 2nd rounder for a playoff team, with salary retained and a 3rd rounder maybe the Kings can even get a 1st rounder in return.

Selling low on QB and trading the only bonafide top player in Kempe would IMO be a mistake.

The problem is that the decision that this year the Kings won't compete for playoffs needs to be made before the deadline. IMO that decision won't be made. Thus they probably maybe only trade Kuzmenko and Perry since their contracts are up, and look to replace them from within (Lee, Chromiak).

Lombardi not only got hosed by bad luck (Voynov, Mike) and his own mistakes (not buying out Mike, Lucic trade was very bad), but his relatively poor drafting record where prioritizing character over skill too much left the prospect pool barren.

What I remember about that blowout in Buffalo is that it completely changed the course of the Kings season. Until then, the Kings were near the top of the Western Conference and had the illusions of a Cup contender. That blowout shattered that into a million pieces, and ultimately led to a house cleaning (and eventually, ironically, 2 cups). This year the Kings don't even have such illusions as being a contender. The 2015 team finished with 95 points, and missed the playoffs. How absurd does that sound? Shootouts and OT failures did them in, along with other issues already noted. The loser points the Kings have been getting this year is the worst of both worlds. More regulation losses would position them better for a lottery pick. More OT wins would put them at the top of the division.

The only King that was kept from the end of that terrible era was Brown. Everyone else was traded, retired or not re-signed. I could see this current squad ending up similarly with Kings org keeping only Kempe, Anderson, Clarke and Laffy or Turc. At this point everyone else seems expendable.

It's a sellers market this year. There will be many teams knocking on Ken's door if he considers selling.

A top 5 first rounder sounds great on surface. But what can you get with that top 5 first rounder if you don't get at least the 2nd overall (to draft either McKenna or Stenberg)? QB, Turcotte, Lafreniere, Kakko, Dach...would you trade Kempe straight up for any one of them?

I'd be more inclined to trade him (if trade was to happen regardless) for multiple high ceiling and borderline/untested NHL ready young players, who are unproven due to lack of opportunity.

Besides, it's not going to happen anyways. Ken isn't trading Kempe.

If we're very lucky, Ken will sell a few players. If we're VERY lucky.

The pipeline CAN be restocked very well even by only trading Kuemper, Perry, Kuzmenko, Edmundson, maybe Moore...if slumping Danault netted a mid-2nd rounder you can definitely combine all these players for three 1st and multiple 2nd and 3rd round picks, or the value equivalent in prospects. A haul the Kings have not had for years...


Getting a 1st rounder of the following years from a team that wants to make a push this season but is likely going to disintegrate in the coming years (like Nashville, Penguins, Maple Leafs, Capitals, TBL, Oilers) could also mean it could become a high chance lottery 1st rounder.

You need to play this smart, not just trade everyone worth a dime in a single season...

I thought going into the season we'd make a final push to the playoffs while at the same time seeing what we had with Byfield & Turcotte. Now I'm pretty sure we need to go into a rebuild soon. And with the way the seasons going, it might start at the end of this season. We still have no idea what we have with those two thanks to Hiller's incompetence. Beyond those 2, we have nobody in the pipeline who might be a 1 or 2C. We need an NHL center right now just to get through the season. After this we need to get some skilled centers & puck moving defensemen. If we're lucky we can do it in 1 draft, like Dallas did in 2017 when they got Heiskanen, Oettinger, & Robertson. If not it'll take a few more years. We also have to realize not every drafted player is going to play with the Kings. And we have to manage those assets & not lose them for nothing, which is what we did when we had that great prospect pipeline a few years ago.
