Anze Kopitar has always said he wanted to retire a King, and he and the organization moved one step closer to that goal Thursday with a two-year contract extension worth $7 million dollars annually.

“Los Angeles has become home for me and my family, and I’m excited to extend my career here,” Kopitar said in a statement. “I’ve been with this organization through it all and I know our group is close to achieving something special. I look forward to helping us reach that next level and achieving the ultimate goal of winning the Stanley Cup again.”

The deal represents a $3 million reduction in annual average value from his current pact, which expires after this season. His extension will keep him in Los Angeles through 2026. He has been the Kings’ perennial leader in scoring and top defensive player over the course of nearly two decades and last season won the Lady Byng Trophy for the second time in his 17-year career.

“We’re pleased to have reached an agreement that will keep Anze in Los Angeles as our group takes the next step in competing for a Stanley Cup,” said Rob Blake, vice president and general manager of the ings. “He is the heart and soul of this team as our captain and he will continue to play a major role on our club.”
