Mitch Marner

DryKing

Power Forward
TEAM LGK
The rumor is that it is likely Mitch will test free agency this summer. I wasn't a huge fan and Leafs fan tend to be very critical of him, but recently I have really started to like his game (and his is a right shot). He also stepped up big in the USA vs Canada game.

Does anyone think the Kings will have any interest at making a run at him this summer?

The odds of him wanting to come here (or Ranta) are minimal but Blake should kick the tires. The Kovalchuk push may have been madness, but it did serve a purpose (the DL one, not the Blake one).

Hopefully this management group wont be here to be able to make that decision 😉

I was initially very high on getting Rantanen, and I still am. But maybe getting Marner would be a better fit since he’s a right shot. Either way I hope the Kings take a serious swing at one of these guys.

It certainly kept us entertained in the summer of 2010. :) I was disappointed the Kings didn’t get Kovy that summer, as I felt he could have helped the Kings offense (somethings don’t change). Instead, DL signed Willie Mitchell. Under the radar, but in retrospect, the prize signing of the summer.

Indeed it did.
I still recall the thread from a poster here I can’t remember about humorously attempting to get a Kovy jersey and all the issues. Classic.

I’m admittedly not a guy who has watched Marner all that closely. But I have seen him enough to have a qualified opinion.

I’m really hesitant on Leafs players. Lots of them are overrated for obvious reasons. And more importantly I just see the Leafs as underachievers. That’s clearly painting with a broad brush.

I am not entirely sold on Marner, and that’s likely do to my unfamiliarity. But he’s gonna want a lot, and you don’t want to miss on those top tier guys.
However, this guy puts up some big numbers. And he does it when it matters.

I think he’s definitely a guy who should be a target. I’ve been hoping for guys like Necas or Tuch. Marner is better. So yeah, you gotta think about it.

Twice a 30+ goal scorer and many times a 20+ goal scorer. He averages over a point a game on a line with Nylander and Matthews. Could he replicate that here? Who would be his line mates that'd bolster that point production? Kings/scouts/GMs really need to look hard to see who'd be a fit.

Lots of teams are going to make a run for him, whether or not they can make cap room is another story. He's 27. He's coming off a 6 year deal at 10M AAV. He'll probably want a similar year deal in length and a raise.

LA has Gavy and Laffy to think about as well (this offseason). Year after that is even trickier with Kopi and Juice coming UFAs. Good news is we have Proverov's $2,025,000 coming off the books at the end of the season.

Dont think he'd succeed with this team and especially with cost

Bennett is the guy Blake should be targeting. He’s going to get so much interest he’s bound to be overpaid, but Kings are going to need another proper center sooner than later. Blake wasn’t wrong in theory with PLD.

Fair points. The knock on Marner has been his size, the fact he is playing with other top forwards (Tavares, Nylander, Matthews) and that the Leafs disappear in the playoffs. I used to be of the opinion that he was overrated, but lately I actually feel he's a bit underrated. He steps up in big games, and seems to be a player who both makes any line he is on better and can thrive with multiple styles of teammates.

I agree with you regarding Necas - I think he should be the Kings top target based on value to cost. Interesting he had told Carolina he would not be re-signing him, which likely partially led to his trade. I wonder if he already has a team/destination in mind. Tuch would also be a great addition via trade.

Agreed - the biggest negative I could see, besides cost, is that he is more of a playmaker than goal scorer and we direly need goal scorers. Paired up with Byfield and Kempe he could do some big things, though. To your point, his production would likely drop if not with tier 1 players like Matthews or Nylander.

I'm still not sold that Gav really wants to come back, but we definitely need to lock up Laf as a priority. Laf has the potential to be a key player on this team for a long time.

Yeah, I really am intrigued with Necas. I believe he has another year on his contract tho. But still someone to keep an eye on.
I think we all read that Necas was not thrilled with how the Canes used him and it was pretty clear he wanted a trade. I guess we will see if COL want to retain him.

Laf is a keeper. We still don’t know exactly what he is but talk about a key player for at least a decade. I am hopeful the org locks him up this summer for a long while at a smart cap hit, something like they have done with Mikey. He’s well worth it.

Re Gavy, no idea what he wants this off-season. I think he does want to explore FA, and that’s when the contract gets pricey, probably overly so.

I live in Toronto and watched Marner since he came into the league. Marner is a great player who makes everyone around him better. Hes also a very good 200ft player and plays in every situatuon. The knock on Marner is that when the playoffs come and the time and space get harder, Marner disappears. His playoff numbers will show different (he has decent playoff numbers with 50pts in 57 games) but thats why numbers dont always tell the story. Marners numbers from game 4 and beyond in previous series would seem to be non existed with his play during those crucial later games . Marner been the whipping boy for Toronto loses in the last few years,

Interesting about the playoff points breakdown. Very helpful.
Some players just can’t play and produce in the playoffs. I think of Thornton and Marleau. And while I did check on Marners playoff performance which looked productive this extra info was interesting.
