NHL technology

Will the NHL ever get the technology to make difnitive decisions. We can see stars that are a million light years away but the NHL can’t figure out how to implement technology to see if a stick is above a players shoulders. Come on man.

Dude, it’s the HNIC game on Saturday night against the biggest market in Canada. What do you think really happened?

They’ll claim they didn’t have the camera angle that was obvious, or that him touching the puck was inconclusive.

I’m done with moving our start times up to 4pm to give them theToronto game in Prime Time. Play it at 1pm then.

There is reason to be skeptical about Toronto, and we can see examples of how it works in real time. Last night was yet another example. The excuse I think Jim Fox relayed was that Toronto thought the camera angle was not correct?? Wow. That’s is a real reach, and pretty damn close to an admission of saying “We just don’t want to rule against the Leafs”.

Hiller was clearly angry in his post game. And it seemed like it wasn’t just objecting to the ruling. It was more like “Toronto gave the Leafs a call and we know that’s how it works”.

It was a bad decision by Toronto. We can’t say it determined the outcome. But it was a bad call. And it’s a bad look for the NHL.

I was going to comment this exact thing the day of the game. Total bullshit that the Kings start a Saturday game at 4 PM, just so Toronto viewers can get a prime time 7 PM start, for an AWAY game. I fully agree, the game should have started at 1 PM Pacific time, or 6 PM Pacific time at the absolute earliest. It’s not the 4 PM local area start time that bothers me, since it actually still affords people the opportunity to see a hockey game, and then still do some thing with their Saturday evening after the game. What irks me is that the start time has nothing to do with that, and everything to do with pandering to Toronto viewers’ schedule. It’s our home game, let them deal with a bullshit start time, just like we have to regularly deal with 4pm start times during weekdays..

Fully agree, the fact that they can track skaters speeds, puck speeds etc., and they still can’t tell if the f***ing puck is above cross bar or at shoulder level? Give me a break..

You’re correct about this. But it’s the part of professional sports that really gripes me, where the business side dictates schedules etc. I get that the NHL wants/needs more money (not that I do), and the “grow the game” mentality is an unfortunate reality. But it leads to stupid decisions that seem silly.
I know there is friction between the Kings and Lakers at times over the facility (where the Lakers get what they want) but the start times for Kings Saturday games is just ridiculous. I’m not thrilled with 1pm start times but I guess I can understand it. But seems pretty simple that Saturday games should start at 1 or 7.

So far I’ve liked every single post on this thread. And pretty much agree with everything. That call on the Matthews goal was a complete joke. We all could see it was above his shoulders. If one of the criteria for disallowing goals is the puck can’t be hit above the shoulders, then you should have cameras positioned at shoulder height, or a similar height & figure it out. But the NHL needs to explain why the camera angle we got on the broadcast wasn’t accurate. And great job on calling that one back in the Ducks game. How they could say one was good & the other wasn’t I don’t know.

About the start time, it wasn’t just this game. We’ve had all kinds of crazy start times this season. Just keep it at 7:30 on weekdays so people can get from work. Maybe Saturdays they can start at 7:00, with a few games at 1:00. But not all this sometimes at 6 or 4 or 6:30 or whatever.

It is funny because I was talking to a buddy in Chicago a few days ago (before the TO game) about how soccer has amazing using of technology. Even though I am not a huge fan, I love their offsides cameras and the zooms. I was suggesting the NHL set up a bunch of cameras to triangulate high sticks against the cross bar. I could envision a sweet replay where they show a blast from the point and then it deflects off of the stick of a forward in front of the net and they show if it is above/below the crossbar. Use CGI/AI to rotate things in 3-dimensions and the NHL could have proof that they are in the 21st century.

The bad call against the Leafs would be a little different because it is the shoulder and not the crossbar but a suite of cameras at that end of the ice should still be able to provide a decent estimate if the puck was played too high or not. Enough to take parallax or whatever bogus excuse TO used to explain away this GDT - ***Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Los Angeles Kings GDT 3/29/25 >>4:00pm<< on FanDuel*** not being a high stick.

The solution is simple actually. Laser technology.

Laser isn't too far off.
Players already have trackers on their shoulder why not put a chip in the puck to determine if which is higher? The chip could also used on the goal and blue lines.
