QB in play?

Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos speculates that the Kings could use Byfield as a trade chip to get over the playoff hump against Edmonton.

I understand Kyrpreos is just trying to do his job (I stress trying). But, I think it'd be Blake's final nail in the coffin if he did this, especially after the PLD debacle.

I don't think it will happen but if it did, it would have to be for a big, big name and we'd have to give up more than QB.

And I think it will take a lot more than one player to get this team over the hump. If you think QB is part of the future, finish the rest of the season and go hard for UFAs in the offseason.

If Blake did this you'd have to expect an extension soon after, no way a GM without a contract could be allowed to make that kind of move. I'm not opposed to it for the right return, hell if it was Blake that leaked it to get the last two games out of Q totally worth it. Kyper has proven to have real sources in the past though so there's probably some smoke around that fire, just a question of the fuel.

I like how the author clowns Kypreos for this ridiculous idea. The tweet he included in the article was a nice touch:

Look at the roster. QB is now the #1 Center. Kopi and Danault are trending down as players. Trading a 22 year old #1 C on a good contract seems like a bad idea.
My thoughts exactly. He's the future at center. Kings really need to look hard at that position in the drafts to come. Lots of wingers that could make the jump ... not centers tho.

Next year Kings have a number one center in Q who will hopefully resemble the player of the last few games on a consistent basis. First year back at center was always going to be an adjustment this season.

But yeah, there two 3C’s after that. This is why the PLD trade made sense in theory. And since it didn’t work the aim of that trade is still unresolved.

I don’t mind overpaying for Sam Bennett in free agency, even if Blake had to trade Danault. But Bennett is going to be popular.

QB is untouchable at this point. Blake would have to be completely out of his mind to trade away QB for a bunch of peanuts. He better have learned his lesson after trading for PLD last offseason; if he doesn't, then he is legitimately asking himself to lose his job.

Sounds like Nick Kypreos was having a slow day. His quote is intentionally misleading as he indicates he's heard Byfield's name come up in trade rumors - which could mean anything. Sounds like he is just trying to generate clicks.

"Staying in the West, I hear the Kings are desperate to shake things up to give themselves the best shot of getting out of the first round of the playoffs and not suffer another defeat against Edmonton. Quinton Byfield isn't a name we've heard come up in trade rumours until this week, but suddenly he could be in play. Perhaps he is the player Los Angeles can move to change their look for an opening playoff round."

Right. Just when he’s coming into his own as a #1 go to Center, they’re going to trade him away. For who? This is ridiculous & Kypreos is an idiot.

I love Q, but he is not in the same tier as the players you cited.
No he’s not. Not now at least. But we don’t know what he could become. We’ve seen flashes of brilliance but until recently haven’t seen the consistency. If the Q we see right now is the Q we get in the playoffs, I’ll take that.

What exactly from these numbers says number 1 center?

Regular Season
GP G A PTS +/- PIM S PPG PPA SHG SHA GWG TOI/G PROD

While I applaud your optimism, I believe we have seen enough to know he won't be in the top tier of NHL centers. The kid is very good, but his present skillset does not lift him to superstar status.

IF a trade with Edmonton happens you know Corey Perry will be part of the deal!

Sure but I don't think that is what he meant exactly. QB would have be PART of a trade for players of that caliber. I mean, Jimmy Carson wasn't in the same league as Gretzky but he was traded nonetheless.

Whatever the case, Blake would have to be out of his mind to move QB at this point. As noted, it would have to be part of a larger deal and those really don't happen at the deadline. I like Kypreos a lot but he can do better than this non-sense....
