In Game 2 of their series with the Avalanche, coach DJ Smith and his Kings desperately needed a win to give themselves a realistic hope of pulling off an upset in Round 1.
The storyline coming in was well-known, Colorado is the big dog, this season’s Presidents’ Trophy winner. Meanwhile, LA hasn’t been able to score enough goals all season, yet they played better down the stretch after making a coaching change and adding Artemi Panarin at the Trade Deadline.
Game 1 went to the Avs, which meant Game 2 was the much talked about must-win. If Smith & Co. fell behind 0-2 in the series, the thought of them beating Colorado four of the next five games is nearly unfathomable.
Things started out much like their last contest, scoreless after 20 minutes at Ball Arena. Another power-play goal by Panarin gave them life — and the Kings were even leading late in regulation. Then, it happened. After a brilliant performance by Anton Forsberg all game, things were tied 1-1.
LA had their chances all night — including five opportunities with the mad advantage, plus a penalty shot — but just couldn’t find another goal. Colorado won in overtime. Check out the game highlights for more:
Things now return to LA, with Games 3 and 4 scheduled to take place at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday and Sunday.
