Saturday’s rematch in San Jose didn’t go quite as well as Friday’s kickoff of a back-to-back weekend set for the Ontario Reign. After coach Andrew Lord watched several of his young players have a memorable night in the series opener, it was the home team who jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when the Pacific Division clubs hit the ice 24 hours later.
After some adjustments during first intermission, the Reign settled things down in the early part of the middle frame. When Martin Chromiak scored midway through, cutting the score to 2-1, momentum appeared to be swinging in Ontario’s direction.
However, when San Jose’s Quentin Musty converted on the power play early in the final frame of regulation, he restored the home team’s two-goal cushion.
Lord pulled his goalie early, creating a six-on-four advantage for the Reign and Taylor Ward found the back of the net. He’s been red hot on the road trip, scoring five goals (and adding three assists) since the team left SoCal.
It wasn’t enough, though. About a minute later, the Barracuda beat Pheonix Copley again and held on for a 4-2 victory.
The same two teams will play once more this week, meeting up on Tuesday night back at Toyota Arena in Ontario.
