Revisiting the Fiala Trade

DryKing

Power Forward
The more I look at this deal, the more I think the Kings won this trade. Fiala has averaged over a point per game with the Kings during the playoffs, and has put up 0.88 points per game during the regular season despite not typically playing on the top line.

Faber got off to a great start, but his offense continues to diminish. That said, he logs big minutes and is an excellent defensive defenseman. I really don't see his offensive numbers improving much as his career progresses - likely topping out around 40 points per season.

The other piece included, the #19 overall in 22, resulted in drafted LW Liam Ohgren who looks very promising and is working on establishing himself in the NHL. He was able to put up 37 points in 41 AHL games last season and really looks like he will turn into a solid NHL player with high potential So far he has 5 points in 29 NHL games.

In the end this trade will likely end up as an even exchange but there is little doubt that 4 seasons into this trade the Kings have, so far, come out on top.

One note on Fabers first year up with Minny, he got a lot of PP1 time with all the injuries. Definitely improved the offensive numbers but as noted they aren't giving him those keys now that they have their vets back.
In any case I still think it was a hockey deal that made sense at the time even if I loved the kid.

Good points on this subject DryKing.

I was a little sour on the trade when it happened, and still am today even though I may be in the minority here. I was REALLY hoping Guerin would have taken Grans instead of Faber (I believe that was the rumor) but Guerin obviously wanted the local boy. Fiala still makes head-scratching decisions but can't deny what he's brought offensively.

Having Clarke and Faber on RHD for the next decade would have been nice...

Totally agree, I was really excited when we drafted Faber and was actively watching his progression looking forward to when he suited up for the Kings. I think a lot of us were initially sad (maybe even a bit angry) when we heard about the trade.

Fiala will always leave us scratching our heads from time to time but what he does well, he does at an elite level.

People complain we sold low on Spence (and they have some merit for sure), imagine if we traded Faber for a mid 1st and a 3rd instead of Spence for a 3rd and a 6th...

I agree with the thought that this was a good hockey trade for the Kings. It for sure made more sense before Blake continued the trend of trading away all the RHD.

If I had to vote today, I would still say make that deal.
