In one of the crazier things we’ve seen in quite some time, Kings forward Trevor Lewis was injured during the second period of Saturday’s contest vs. Ottawa. It wasn’t the injury itself that left many in disbelief — it’s hockey, things happen — but the timing was beyond unfortunate. Lewis was playing in NHL game No. 999. Wednesday would have been a career milestone; something the team planned to celebrate this coming Saturday. Now, everything will have to wait.

According to several sources, the 37-old-forward is likely to be sidelined for four to six weeks. The news comes after an MRI and other tests were performed. It comes at a time when Lewis was perhaps playing some of his best hockey of the season, flowing regularly between playing center and wing on the coach Jim Hiller’s fourth line.

Through 25 games played this season, he had posted seven points (3G, 4A). As always, though, his primary responsibility was more of a defensive approach to games, helping shutdown potential offensive opportunities for opponents.

With 781 of his 999 career games coming in Los Angeles, Lewis currently sits eighth all-time on the Kings list of games played. He should pass Rob Blake (805 GP) later this season. Next on the list would be Marcel Dionne. However, with 921 GP in LA, that’s a number most likely out of reach for Lewis.
