If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.

That’s the saying, and that appears to be the approach Reign bench boss Marco Sturm will go with in goal Wednesday night. He’s expected to send veteran netminder Pheonix Copley back out to the crease after pulling him last night during first intermission.

Copley had given up three goals on 15 shots in the team’s opening frame at Texas. It was their first appearance in the building since 2018 and Sturm had seen enough after just 20 minutes. In came Jacob Ingham, who proceeded to stop all 11 shots he faced over the final 40 minutes of regulation. While the team tightened up defensively, the offense just couldn’t put enough pucks behind Texas’ goalie at the other end. It was Ingham’s fourth game in six days, as he had been playing quite a bit in ECHLL Greenville prior to his recall on Monday.

Reign drop Game 1 of a B2B set vs. the Texas Stars.

Final score won't really tell the story.

Copley gave up 3 goals in P1 (on 15 shots). Ingham came in to start P2 and stopped all 33 shots he faced over final two frames. Stars added two ENGs to make it 5-2.

Reign had 35 SOG.

Without a true morning skate, it will be difficult to accurately predict Strum’s projected lineup for tonight. Should he opt for any changes at forward, first-year pro Kaleb Lawrence would seem to be a good option. He had a goal and assist in a previous game vs. Texas back in November.

On defense, Jakub Dvorak is always a candidate to rotate out, as he’s often been used in a platoon-type situation for much of this season.

While we still await a potential return date for Kings prospect Angus Booth, there was a significant update on goaltender Erik Portillo earlier today — and it wasn’t a good one.
