‘Tigtone’ Review: Adult Swim’s Animated Fantasy Insanity Series Is Visually Hypnotic

The quest begins January 13th at Midnight ET/PT on adult swim.
So now you have a good idea of the visuals at play in Tigtone. The bizarre effect of 2D painted characters and faces coupled with facial performance capture makes it seem as if something just under the skin of the characters themselves is forcing their faces to stretch, swell, and grimace with every line of dialogue. It’s fantastic. It fits in perfectly with Adult Swim’s particular brand of weirdness and is a clever use of animation technology that Koehler has been honing and shaping over the last seven years or so. The rest of the animation is both gorgeous and grotesque as well, as if a Rococo painting has come to life only to carve a bloody path through a fantasy landscape. All things in service of the Quest.

Lovecraft in current Anime/Manga


Recently over the last few years I have come across a few several references to the works of H. P. Lovecraft appearing in either Light Novels or Manga that have then been adapted and produced into a Japanese Anime.

1st would be the forgettable 這いよれ! ニャル&#2 3376;さん Haiyore! Nyaruko-san https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyaruko:_Crawling_with_Love in which Nyarlthotep is envisioned in the form of a Highschool Girl and the series is purely a comedy.

From the wikipedia:
“The story of Haiyore! Nyaruko-san centers around Nyaruko, a formless Lovecraftian-deity of chaos (Nyarlathotep) who can take on the shape of a seemingly ordinary silver-haired girl. Mahiro Yasaka is a normal high school boy who is being chased by a fearsome Nightgaunt one night, until Nyaruko saves him. She explains that the creatures from H. P. Lovecraft's works are actually races of aliens, and that she has been sent to Earth by the Space Defense Agency to protect him from being kidnapped by an alien trafficker. Aliens find Mahiro and the Earth strangely attractive, for entertainment, auction or resources. One by one, the Great Old Ones enter Earth illegally. Eventually, Nyaruko and two other Lovecraft-creatures, Cthugha and Hastur, end up being freeloaders at Mahiro's place.[4] Mahiro has become accustomed to his protection detail of Nyarlathotep (Nyaruko), Cthugha, and Hastur making his life fascinating.”

The next 2 series treat the Lovecraft source material with much more respect.

(魔&#2 7861;&#2 0351;いの&#2 3233; &#2 6143;&#2 4453;つひと Mahō Tsukai no Yome / The Ancient Magus Bride Mana written & illustrated by Kore Yamazaki has an story arc in which the characters Chise a human girl who has magical powers that will drastically shorten her life & Elias a Fae/human crossbreed also known as the “Thorn Mage” are requested to visit Ulthar and meet with the “King of the cats” . This story is covered in volume #2 chapter 6 Curiosity killed the cat & chapter 7 Love conquers all. And the anime chapters #4 Everything must have a beginning and #5 Love conquers all.

Kore Yamazaki's treatment of Lovecraft's story “The Cats of Ulthar” dwells more into the reasons why the man took to killing cats that resulted in the “King of the Cats” killing him. In this story the man “Matthew” whose wife “Mina” is deathly ill. He asks a sorcerer to cure Mina. The sorcerer teaches Matthew how to make a potion that steals cats’ nine lives to make Mina healthy. It does not work and after his death “Mathew's soul” is trapped on an Island in a river and Chise and Elias are requested to purify it.

This series I can highly recommend for the story and artwork are top notch and the anime faithfully brings to life Kore Yamazaki's art almost scene by scene page by page.






The last series is (オーバーロード Ōb&#2 57;rōdo Overlord. Light novels by Kugane Maruyama and is currently having a manga and 3 seasons so far as an anime.

The story follows the ending of an online Virtual Reality game Yggdrasil which like the “World of Warcraft” in which Momonga who is the Guildmaster of the guild Ainz Ooal Gown stays logged in till the game shuts down. Instead of being logged out he finds himself still in the game except it has now become real.

In this new world Momonga is a world level undead magic caster in charge of the entire guild/nation which has now been transported to a new reality with powerful underlings at his command.

In the 9th book chapter #4 Anime season#3 chapter 12 Momonga (now going by the name of his guild Ainz Ooal Gown) is about to go into battle against the Re-Estize Kingdom whose troops on the plains outnumber his 240,000 to 60,000. Ainz opens the battle by casting the spell “Tribute to the Black Beauty (La Shub-Niggurath)”A black wind blew, racing past the kingdom's army. There were 70,000 men in the left wing of the Kingdom's army. Everyone of them was slain in an instant. After the horror of what just happened sank in, Ainz said that this was just the beginning for when one makes an offering to the black Goddess of the bountiful harvest, she will reciprocate with a gift of her offspring. Those cute adorable children. The Baby Goats.
Out of the 240,000 less than 60,000 survived.
