Confirmed with Link Alex Turcotte to three-year contract extension (AAV: $775,000)

Super Star

First year is a 2 way contract. Last two years are 1 way.

Excellent signing.
What does it mean that it is two way if his salary is the same?

In this case, I suspect it is a sweetener or a reward to the player for hanging in there and remaining in the minors for so many seasons to begin his career, even if they’re not certain there will be room for him on the NHL roster. Basically to encourage him that he’s now makign big league dollars regardless of whether they bounce him back and forth between the AHL and NHL.

When they do this for a guy like TJ Tynan, it serves as both a reward and also a bit of a safeguard against some other team randomly picking him up on waivers. Especially if other teams know that he’s a longshot to make their big club, and their ownership won’t give permission to the GM to blow 1 million bucks on a guy who’s likely going to remain in the minors anyways. So while it does not hurt their cap, it does hurt the owners wallet. Why they call it a two way contract for a guy like Tynan, yet still guarantee NHL level salary is unclear to me, but there must be some form of contractual loophole in terms of roster allotment. Otherwise, why not just call it a one-way contract and then send him to the minors anyways? I could not honestly say..

Good contract for someone who hasn't gotten a fair shot to prove himself yet. If he ends up producing on the big club, it's a steal of a contract. If he doesn't and is an AHL lifer.. then no big deal I suppose.

Turcotte and Thomas both need to clear waivers, so I interpret the 2-way contract each got in year 1 as more aesthetic than anything. Like they can’t just make the team guaranteed before camp as AHL’rs to this point, they have to earn it (wink), but unless they absolutely nosedive in September they’re already on the opening night roster.

Exactly. Neither one of those guys is going to spend a day on the Reign (outside of rehab). Just another carrot for them to put in the work this summer and come into training camp hungry. And if they don’t make it out of camp they’re going to get grabbed on waivers.

This is a VERY underrated move. The Kings DESPERATELY need some key contributors on cheap contracts. If Turcotte can have a breakout season, Clarke can come close to his ceiling and Akil or Laff can really step up it gives them a chance. It's a lot of "ifs" but it's the only way the Kings will be able to compete for the next 2-3 years.

Kings need some production from Turcotte. He was a 5th overall pick. I don't want to see him end up like Tukkonen, Hickey, or other high 1st round picks that "never made it" with the Kings. Could probably add Bjornfot to that list also.

Don’t forget Teubert…

If they can't make it onto the Kings out of training camp, then by all means grab them off waivers and enjoy.
