Why did John Hawkes turn down Walking Dead's Governor? Commercials! | Blastr

By now, most Walking Dead fans know that David Morrissey (Centurion, Nowhere Boy) has been cast as the iconic baddie the Governor, being the No. 2 choice after John Hawkes (American Gangster, Identity) turned down the role. But why did Hawkes decline to play one of the biggest characters on cable's biggest series?

In an interview with Movie Web, Hawkes opened up about his thought process and why he didn't think a stint on the zombie series was the right move for him, career-wise.

"They offered me the role, and I just felt there would be someone else who could do it better. I was flattered, and I took a look at the series. It held interest for me, but I just didn't feel like I was the guy for it," he said. "I have to be careful of what TV shows I choose, particularly ones that have commercials in them, because it's going to be a different kind of television show. There are going to be sponsors. No matter how good the show is, if there are commercials, it's going to be a different show, to me. That's just my personal feeling. Yeah, it was nice of them to ask, and it's a good show, but, again, I just didn't feel I was the guy. They came to me and sent me the graphic novel and the first two seasons. I took a look at them, and just didn't feel like it was for me."

So...The Killing...still continues to be a great show. I am enjoying it just as much as last season. Yet there is a troubling trend. I read yet another article(on EW) yesterday basically saying how the show had lost it's heat, etc. It's reached the point where it almost seems like these outlets are trying to submarine this show. It's a constant stream of negative press focused solely on the post finale' disappointment of PART of the audience. Very little is said regarding the current season which is 4 or 5 episodes in. At some point...move on. Either watch or don't, but really...stop trying to maliciously turn poeple who still enjoy the show away from it.

As much as I wanted Hawkes, the guy has spent a LOT of time working to get to where he is at this point in his career. He did a lot of character/tv work and is finally getting paid off with movie roles that, while indy-ish, are getting him Oscar chatter. I think 'the Governor', although it would have had geek cred, might have been a step backwards for him.
 
Don Draper is such a boss buying that Jaguar like it was nothing. That scene with Joan in the bar was needed for years.
 
Watched MM last night for the first time in a season or so, and it was good. Was a jag really just $5600 in the '60s? I know it wasn't much compared to today's inflated standards, but $5600?!

Although we also bumped into "the Pitch" show afterwards. Like that very much.
 
I'm still watching "The Killing," but it ain't the same show. Too many conspiracies, too much crap happening to the detectives on the case, and it strains credulity at this point. A police detective gets beaten half to death on the reservation by hoodlums working for the casino owner, can identify his assailants and... nothing happens????? This story would be the lead on the nightly local news every night. What happened to the writers?

I'm still in, but characters have really gone off the reservation. Love Holder but he is an abused wife at this point. Although, it was nice to see Linden brought low and humbled. I still like the show but yeah, it's a little dopey. Some of the good stuff is still good. All the Richmond stuff and characters are the best part of the show. Stan's story with him barely holding things together has been good too. When that sympathetic lady was talking to him only to hit him up for cash...that was a gutpunch. But Mitch on the road is distracting. All the stuff with her sister/the poilsh mobster appears to have been a bunch of busy work/red herrings. That's the problem with stretching the mystery...they have had to keep tossing us off the scent and now it's overly convoluted whereas the first season was just wonderfully simple. I want them to solve this case and see if they can take the existing characters and make it a great show again. I think it's entirely possible but they have to pare things down and do what works best.

Yeah, I'm still in too. Last few episodes before last nights were really prolonging things but now that Linden found the key card and it's pointing to the mayor -geez, anybody else they can connect the dots to? I'm starting to think we won't (AGAIN) find out by end of season who the Killer is. But at the same time that's the draw for me. I enjoy the character studies too even though some of them irritate me (Mitch). It's the one show I look forward to each week. Still
 
Oh you managed to focus my frustration really well.

But until they do the ScoobyDoo gang pulling the mask off, i am not falling for any of the obvious clues.
 
I am an addict with shows on AMC. For whatever reason, I still haven't latched onto Mad Men and I haven't checked out the Pitch.

I love Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and The Killing.


I know The Killing has gone in many directions but I can tell you that it is odd living near reservations. It also reminds me of that one movie with Val Kilmer where he and that other cop go on that reservation in one of the Dakota's to solve a murder.
