All Things:AMC television

No...you were right the first time. No need to apologize.

I think we're all a little jaded right now on this show. KFIT pretty much hit the nail on the head I think for a lot of us who started at S1:E1 and feel a certain way about it. It's sort of like when your kid excels at something early on and then just stops trying after everyone tells him or her how great they are.

The writers have more or less followed a different formula since the first season and it just feels soooooooooo dragged out. Here we are at a car waiting for a girl for five episodes, hey look we're at a barn milling about while Carl recovers for five episodes, oh hey there are two episodes left so let's do some good stuff. Then the third season was more or less the same thing but with interchangable parts. Instead of Shane and Laurie and Rick fighting we have Glen and Maggie fighting. Instead of T-Dog being the outcast and looked down on we have Andrea and Michonne playing that role. Instead of them worrying about being overrun at the farm by zombies we have them fearing being overrun at the prison by Woodbury. It's just a lazy cycle is all and, instead of a fear that there is dread around every corner and it being hopeless (like in S1), we just are left with, "well, who is going to confront Rick and try and be the alpha-male in this new group?" "I wonder who is going to create headaches and make bad decisions next year?" "When the Governor comes back with his Mad Max bunch, will any of them be wearing a hockey mask?"

I'm just hoping that next season they start to give us more logic in the storytelling and less repetition. Give us characters that matter and have something interesting to tell. ****, it took them almost all season for them to make Michonne an actual character that you became interested in. I mean, up until she was walking around with Carl did anyone even have any concern or interest in her?

I think everyone's stated how I feel about the finale already, so I'll save my breath. It felt like a mid-season episode more than a finale. Frustrating.

Thanks Smythe - what a spot on analysis.

It is interesting you mention S1:E1. My oldest and I have started watching it as she is now interested in the show/story. We watched Epi 2 last night. I had forgotten how good this show was. The tension/story as well as the pacing was all even and well done. The acting was super and it all made sense.

Wow - the difference of a great and good show runner. The new runner needs to sit on their writers for Season 4.

Well, Vince Gilligan will be free in a few months, but no way in hell he'd hitch his wagon to AMC again! ;)

BUT...NOT...CAROL!!!!!!!!!! F'u walking dead. She is 50% of the reason I still watch, yeah I like her that much. So kill her, and take away Darryl's humanity so i can be done with the turgid rancid poop of a show. I have given up on Arrow/Revolution already this week, and Bates Motel(which is awful...really awful...but I keep hoping it will fully embrace that and be darkly funny) and Grimm(wessen/rinse/repeat) are teetering on the brink. I could devote the spare time to well, nothing good, but still.

Oh, and btw, you do realize that the other guy with the governor...DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A NAME. They were carefully tiptoeing around saying 'the black guy' on Talking Dead, and in a behind the scenes clip when he showed up they had something like random henchman under his face. You can't even NAME the guy????? WTF, you weren't too busy WRITING were you? Christ I need an antacid.

More on the gripe/rant regarding TWD. GO BACK AND WATCH SEASON 1 - you know the season run by the REAL show runner of this hit - Frank Darabont! The daughter and I just watched episodes 3 and 4 of Season 1 and all I can say is I now remember why I so loved this show back then. Episode 4 was some of the most griping single hours in all of TV. In that episode you got:

- Darryl/Rick leading the group back to ATL to find Merle and Darryl's favorite weapon in action
- Amy and Andrea's backstory while on the lake catching fish
- Merle's stump
- A run in with the Vatos, the hostage taking of Glen, and it all ending up being an old folks home and some Hispanic guys doing the right thing for those left behind
- Merle stealing the van forcing the ATL group to run back to the mountain camp
- The zombie attack on camp resulting in Amy's death
- Ed digging a lot of holes
- Rick, T-Dog, Glenn and Merle saving the day with lots of guns

Phew! Darabont knows how to make a show! When is his '40/50's crime noir coming to TBS!

I told my daughter after she was gushing about this episode "it never gets better then what you just saw ..." Damn AMC!! You had this show and then you let it get away ...

I think, at times, s2 was better. It's at least as good. Glad you liked it. Not to spoil, but I think part of why everyone left is the show was painted into a corner, almost as if they planned on not coming back. I think the main reason is due to AMC's poor treatment of creative types. Should be interesting to see what happens.
