All Things:AMC television

there was no proof he was in NH all those months, and everyone but the Nazis was completely in the dark about their underground meth lab so Walt disappearing down there while making a trip to NH and maybe getting a little sloppy covering his tracks as the cancer progresses doesn't seem like an implausible front.

Walt's finger prints are no where in that lab except on the mask and his blood smear on the tank. Jesse's are every where. Both are known meth cooks. It wouldn't hold up to the scrutiny of a police investigation any more than Walt's last call to Skylar in Ozymandias was able to get her off the hook.

I know it seems like a feel good little piece of wrap up, but the evidence Gilligan provided us with just doesn't support it.

Did Pinkman ever get fingerprinted during the series? I can't recall him ever being more than just questioned and released. If he doesn't have a record or prints on file then he's safe"er". It also helps that Hank did much of his investigation outside of the department.

Not that we see, but even if I'm completely wrong about the prints, I'd say it's safe to assume that Jesse is on the run based on the fact that Marie would no doubt have told the DEA that Hank and Gomie were with him when they disappeared. It's reasonable to assume the police have been looking for him since then.

As to Walt's reason for going into the meth lab at the end, Gilligan gave us a huge clue with his choice of music.

Guess I got what I deserve
Kept you waiting there, too long my love
All that time, without a word
Didn't know you'd think, that I'd forget, or I'd regret

The special love I have for you
My baby blue

The FBI had Jesse in that interrogation room in regards to the $5M he was throwing out his car window.

I don't know if he was charged with anything, but I think they still wonder how Jesse got that $5M.

Now that I think about it, is there any hard evidence connecting Jesse to Walt? Huell, Kuby, Skylar and Marie can all link Pinkman to Walt and Jesse was a known client of Saul Goodman so maybe the FBI could make a drug trafficking RICO case against Jesse? This, of course, assumes that anyone finds out Jesse is still alive and not in Alaska.

Jesse was known for being a slinger, not so much a cook. Word on the street (according to Skinny Pete and Badger) was that Walt was still cooking. And the confession tape of him that aired on TV probably made it safe to assume Jesse was capped for being a rat. Besides he wasn't the big fish the DEA were after. He's pretty much free, but as we've seen he tends to get himself in trouble and without Walt there to bail him out like he did every season, well, who knows what happens.

I was just flipping channels and stumbled across one of the early episodes on Sundance or IFC. They were in the RV and Walt was bitching at Jesse for bringing Funions for food and leaving the key in the ignition. That was their big problem - Funions and a dead battery. I was just watching and thinking about how much darkness was to come. ****ing Funions.

Man, that was some great television.

For those who say it was too much of a "happy ending" .... consider that perspective might be caused by timing.

Had Hank and Gomez been killed in the final episode and not three episodes to go... the pall that cast over the show might have been more present in your mind. What if the knife fight had happened in the final episode?

Part of why I enjoyed the ending of Breaking Bad so much was that it got to the truly bad and let us dwell in the aftermath.

Perspective can transform even the darkest moment into one at least slightly brighter and I'm happy with a Walter White who has gained perspective if not redemption.

There is no redemption for Walt. Only self awareness and through that, a peace that everyone deserves. Even the truly horrible.

Or whatever.

It was a very sad ending.

Just think of all those poor meth heads who won't be getting their Heisenberg-level fixes anymore.

:(

So Jesse Pinkman, the guy who was caught chucking $5 million in cash out of a car window right before he started working with two DEA agents that were murdered by the great Heisenberg, suddenly shows back up in society and the DEA/police don't bother with him at all? I just don't see it happening that way. He's a person of interest, plain and simple. Even if the authorities aren't actively looking for him, there's no way he just goes back to life as normal without the authorities being all over his ass at some point. The best we can hope for Jesse is that he lams it, gets a new identity, and manages to lead a quiet, law abiding life. The idea that he's totally scott free is just a fandom fantasy.

Vince Gilligan shares discusssed alternate endings and other storyline possibilities that never occurred... some interesting stuff:

'Breaking Bad': Vince Gilligan shares five alternate endings - MSN TV News

Holy crap
5. Jesse Dies, Then Walt Jr. Dies: This wasn't necessarily a finale ending, but it was an idea Gilligan kicked around before Season 1 even began. He says he considered a sequence in which a very ruthless drug dealer he would include elements of Gus Fring, Krazy 8 and Tuco Salamanca would kill Jesse. Walt, "filled with rage," shackles him in a basement. He rigs a tripwire with a shotgun, so that the dealer can kill himself by pulling it. Walt wants the dealer to do it, so he begins torturing him from the ground up. He starts at the toes and begins "lopping off bits of this guy and cauterizing it with a blowtorch or something." This goes on for weeks, but the dealer won't kill himself. Eventually Walt Jr. discovers him and tries to give him some water. When the dealer realizes Walt Jr. is Walt's son, he trips the wire and kills them both.Gilligan said no one at AMC was wild about the idea, and eventually his team of writers "people with more sense," he joked — reined him in.
"And you'll notice we never actually did that scene," he said.

You know, I actually hated Jesse's character for the first couple seasons but as time went on he very clearly became my favorite. So much so that when Uncle Jack was ready to kill him in the desert I audibly yelled "No!" at the TV screen.

I personally loved the final episode because my favorite character made it out alive, finally, after all the mental and physical torture he endured. It just felt so damn good to see him drive through that fence.

Walt was prepared to kill himself AND Jesse in that hail storm of bullets, but his hatred for Jack and one last gasp of sympathy for what they had done to Jesse had saved his life.

I had no problems with the ending, save for the fact that Badfinger sucks. It was soothing to see Walt go out under full control, which was always the main and relatable point - an "everyman" with no control of his own life longing to seize ownership of his destiny. He got what he wanted, at full cost. Its the only way the show could have ended.

When JD and I watched the finale, I didn't "see" this, but when I came home and watched again, it immediately came to mind... :)
