All Things:AMC television

Ok, so Preacher...

Lot to like here despite the clear deviations. Most importantly Cassidy. And even moreso, the connection between he and Jesse. The 'being hunted by religious vampire killers' is clearly to give more depth to the story. For all I know they will fold all the HUMPERDOO stuff into that storyline. Dominic Cooper would not have been my first choice. Doesn't have the lanky command of Custer. But...he is starting to grow on me. I need to see the ANGER that Jesse had in him though. Then we can really judge. I am trying really hard to accept Ruth Negga as Tulip. Not really offput by the race change, it's deeper than that. They are trying too hard to make her cutesy. Once again, not enough of the pain and rage. Granted, 2 episodes in...so I will be patient. I am a little concerned though at least as far as the development of the story so far. There is a TON of stuff being introduced with ZERO payoff. As a reader I know what all these things mean...but I have to imagine the noobs are very confused at this point. I have no doubt patience will pay off...but how patient is the audience going to be with this?

As far as comic book moments, although Quincannon is coming in way too soon, Jackie Earl Haley is PERFECT. And the open last night with the SPOILERS (s.o.k.) gave me the biggest nerd bonage of the show so far.

So far, I LIKE this adaptation. I don't love it, yet.

Oh...to add to Preacher: sign that show is in right hands...they were right about Arseface. Having him be a normal innocent face with a mess under his nose...was the right call.

T.K. =s Bill Mosely

I have liked it too although some of the deviations are sometimes confusing. Overall, though, I like it. Cooper and the actor portraying Cassidy are great. Tulip, not so much ...

Not the actress' fault as much as the writing. Trying too hard to make her likable/relatable. Tulip was more complicated in the comic. Like I said, they may get there...I am gonna give it time because when they hit...like the PREACHER graphic layover on a panorama scene...it gets really close.

In other related news, I just watched the first two eps of the Preacher instead of doing my chores, hee hee. Yeah, it is different (still not enough black humor!!!), but it is pretty dark and I shall continue to watch it. I still feel sad about Arseface's story. The series needs more John Wayne though. ;)

Anyone watch RIDE w/Norman Reedus? When I was in High School I read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. This had a bit of that...and a travelogue...and tried(mostly successfully) to use NR's good guy charisma to tie it all into a little bow. Not at all mandatory viewing...but if you want a nice relaxing bit of fluff, you could do a lot worse. Not really at home on AMC, would fit more on Discovery/Travel channel, but if you are into bikes and bike culture and/or Norman Reedus, it was an entertaining 40 some odd minutes.

Preacher. Hurm. I want to like you. Want to give you the benefit of a doubt. BUT......................

Tulip is terrible. Jesse only slightly less so. The story isn't taking liberties as much as being completely unrecognizable. Cassidy is holding the show together, as did the brief appearance of S.O.K. and Herr Starr. But, it's not enough. AND NOW, you are threatening to reinvent the completely untouchable story of Jesse's parents. That is Not Acceptable. It is the nexus of the origin of his righteous anger. I am gonna ride this out. I am a Catholic after all and am no stranger to self punishment...but, get your crap together!!!! And soon-ish!

I am confused as to where Preacher is going, but I still have faith.

It doesn't seem like we're getting the whole Jesse's parents met when the father returned from Vietnam and a woman call him a baby killer story.

We got a Q-bert cameo, so that's gotta count for something, eh?
