TOSH.0 Director Scott Zabielski to Helm POLICE ACADEMY Remake

That long-awaited and highly anticipated Police Academy reboot that everyone’s been clamoring for finally has a director. Deadline reports that New Line Cinema has set Scott Zabielski to helm the remake of the 1984 film. The original comedy spawned six sequels that culminated with 1994’s Mission to Moscow (shudder). Zabielski will make his feature directorial debut with the project, having helmed a number of episodes of Comedy Central’s wildly popular series Tosh.0. Zabielski actually went through the police academy, becoming a reserve police officer in West Hollywood. I’m sure this will come in handy when staging R-rated sex comedy gags.

No plot details are known at this time regarding the reboot (though my fingers are cross for a Steve Guttenberg cameo), but we should hear more soon now that a director’s attached.

This could be fun if they keep in mind the raunchy nature of the original. It's not a classic by any stretch so relaunching the franchise isn't as annoying as most of these things.

Universal Planning BRUCE ALMIGHTY Sequel for Jim Carrey

Today in “Sequels No One Asked For” news, Universal is apparently keen on a follow-up to 2003’s Bruce Almighty. The original film, starring Jim Carrey, was a box office smash grossing almost $500 million worldwide. The studio unsuccessfully tried to spin off Steve Carell’s minor character from the first film in 2007 with the excruciatingly terrible Evan Almighty, and now Variety reports that the studio is developing a proper sequel as a starring vehicle for Carrey. They’ve already tapped Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (Hot Tub Time Machine, Yes Men) to pen a script (may I suggest Bruce Almightier for a title?).

Somebody is looking to jumpstart their career with an easy hit or two...

Beth McCarthy to Direct Road Trip Comedy TAMMY Starring Melissa McCarthy

After breaking out in a big way following the success of last year’s Bridesmaids, star Melissa McCarthy understandably has quite a bit on her plate at the moment. One of her projects that’s pretty far along is a road trip comedy called Tammy. The film centers on a woman who takes a roadtrip with her diabetic/alcoholic/foul-mouthed grandmother after she’s laid off from a fast food restaurant and discovers that her husband’s having an affair. The Help director Tate Taylor was previously in talks to helm the project, but subsequently dropped out. Variety now reports that TV helmer Beth McCarthy (SNL, 30 Rock) has come onboard to direct.

And let the overexposure of McCarthy begin.

'Bridesmaids' Co-Star Wendi McLendon-Covey A Bit More Optimistic About Kristen Wiig Returning For 'Bridesmaids 2' | The Playlist

Yes, it's the story that doesn't want to die. With word emerging that Universal was planning to move ahead with a "Bridsemaids" sequel without its co-writer and star Kristen Wiig, it seems everyone has an opinion. And most of that opinion is "it's a terrible idea." In fact, those were the words used by Melissa McCarthy when she was recently asked about making a followup without Wiig. But her co-star, Wendi McLendon-Covey -- who played the under-sexed, over-worked Rita -- is a bit more optimistic about things all working out.

"She never said that she didn't want to do it," McLendon-Covey pointed out to E!. "All she said was that she's not working on it right this minute because someone gave her the opportunity to write and direct her own film so, duh, she's going to do that first. So no. I think all she's waiting for is for her and Annie [Mumolo] to come up with an idea that's equally as good."

BURT WONDERSTONE Set Photos Featuring Jim Carrey

The dueling magician comedy Burt Wonderstone is currently filming in the magical land of mysticism that is Las Vegas, and some set photos from the pic have started to surface. Just the other day we brought you images that gave us our first look at stars Steve Carell, Olivia Wilde, and Steve Buscemi, and now we’ve got a glimpse of Jim Carrey’s very douchey-looking magician character. Carell stars as the titular Vegas magician who loses his partner and then has to compete with a hipper magician (Carrey). In the previous set photos, Carell’s character looked to be channeling David Blaine in a dangerous-looking trick. These images of Carrey evoke another popular mainstream “magician”: Criss Angel.

While the premise could easily be turned into a lame, cheap joke comedy, the cast involved here compounded with the ridiculous-looking set photos have me hopeful that we’re in for a really good time once Burt Wonderstone opens. Don Scardino (30 Rock) is directing, and Burt Wonderstone is set for release sometime in 2013. Hit the jump to see the set photos.

Ok, Carrey hasn't been funny in a loooooong time, and I am not a Carell fan...but I am already laughing just due to the costuming. If they give the movie some humor beyond that this could be fun.

I am not sure what I just watched...

New Trailer for SASSY PANTS Starring Haley Joel Osment and Ashley Rickards

There are two things you don’t hear us say very often on this site: one of them is “Haley Joel Osment” and the other is “Sassy Pants.” Tonight marks the exceedingly rare moment where we’ll say both of those things in one sentence, as in, we have a new trailer for you from the comedy Sassy Pants starring Haley Joel Osment. The film, by debut feature director Coley Sohn, stars Ashley Rickards (Awkward) as a teenage girl who attempts to get a job before going away to college. Complicating her plans of escape are an overbearing mom (Anna Gunn of Breaking Bad) and her gay father, played by Diedrich Bader (Napoleon Dynamite). The aforementioned Osment plays Chip Hardy, the father’s boyfriend. Hit the jump to watch the trailer and see Osment like you’ve never seen him before (and probably never wanted to).
