All Things: Directors

Warcraft looks...different. May be able to finally be a true videogame movie, also could turn into a ridiculous cgi mess. Was very stylized. Almost feels like a more aware Flash Gordon(Sam Jones version) and I mean that in a good way. WAAAAAAAAY too early to tell. (Duncan) Jones is either gonna be able to make what he wants, or get sentenced to director jail for a while.

#SDCC14: Kevin Smith to Channel Spielberg with Upcoming Film Moose Jaws - Dread Central

The fine folks over on /Film picked up on the announcement at Comic-Con, where Smith revealed the first trailer for Tusk. On his panel, he said that the crazy film about a dude who turns a podcaster into a walrus will be the first in his 'True North Trilogy,' followed up by the previously announced Yoga Hosers and a movie called Moose Jaws.

Smith describes the latter film as being "Jaws, with a moose," and says it will feature much the same cast as Tusk. The only thing he really said about the movie is that there will be a scene in it of a killer moose eating a little girl, which is enough to pique my interest.

So awesome to see Smith stepping outside of his comedy comfort zone and delving deep into the horror genre. As someone who loved Red State, I welcome all these whacky upcoming projects with open arms!

A LOT of weed.

Watch: 10 Minute Video Essay 'Eyes Wide Open' Explores Ph | The Playlist

The Bank Austria Kunstforum recently had a showing of Kubrick's work as a photographer before he became a filmmaker, and the folks at Cast Your Art put together a pretty nice ten minute video essay on the exhibit. It's overview of what's on display but also an informative guide through the details of Kubrick's shutterbug efforts. It goes into the various styles he utilized and the breadth of coverage he provided to newspapers and magazines, ranging from street life to sports to current events and more.

Interview: William Friedkin on ‘Sorcerer,’ The ‘Killer Joe’ TV Show And Life Beyond “Macho Bull***** Stories” | The Playlist

You are, however, involved in the possible reworking of “To Live and Die in LA” into a TV show. What’s the status on that project?
I've turned down every proposal for it. I don't want to replicate the movie but I'm not uninterested in having something that has the same vibe, the same feel, but not the same characters. Recently there was a TV version of the film "Fargo"—different characters, a different plot but with vague echoes of the old film, and it's wonderful.

And I'm trying, with a very good writer named Bobby Moresco who wrote "Crash" and produced "Million Dollar Baby," I'm trying to come up with something new that would justify that title.

...

Hence the possibility of a "Killer Joe" TV series too?
We're trying to develop that too, but I'm being very cagey about it in that I won't just put it out there.

TIFF Trailer: Hal Hartley's 'Ned Rifle' Starring Aubrey Plaza | The Playlist

Heres the official synopsis: At once a saga concerning the Grim family of Queens and how their lives are turned upside down by the arrival of the self- proclaimed genius Henry Fool, the trilogy is also an illustration of America's grappling with ideas, art, politics, and religion over the course of 20 years. In this swiftly paced and expansive conclusion, Henry and Fay's son Ned sets out to find and kill his father for destroying his mother's life. But his aims are frustrated by the troublesome, sexy and hilarious Susan, whose connection to Henry predates even his arrival in the lives of the Grim family.

I don't know if this is going to be any good, but I'm really glad to see Aubrey Plaza getting cast in stuff.

Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Judd Apatow & J.J. Abrams Team Up To Save Film Stock | The Playlist

The Wall Street Journal reveals that behind-the-scenes, Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, Judd Apatow, and J.J. Abrams went to the heads of studios to make the case for film, and to have them invest in the format. How? The studios have agreed to buy an unspecified amount of film stock each year from Kodak, even if they don't know how many movies will be shot using it. It guarantees Kodak a consistent flow of money, and a reason to keep making celluloid, even though the photo company initially tried to get the studios to invest in a manufacturing plant. And the feedback, as you might expect, is a bit mixed, but mostly supportive.

"It's a financial commitment, no doubt about it. But I don't think we could look some of our filmmakers in the eyes if we didn't do it," said Bob Weinstein, likely referring to longtime pal, and film enthusiast, Quentin Tarantino.

Meanwhile, Apatow just wants the option available. "[Digital and film] are valid choices, but it would be a tragedy if suddenly directors didn't have the opportunity to shoot on film," he said. "There's a magic to the grain and the color quality that you get with film."

But as you might expect, there are practical considerations to make too. "I'm a huge fan of film, but it's so much more convenient digitally," "Transformers: Age Of Extinction" producer Ian Bryce stated.
