I am an unabashed Kevin Smith fan. If he wants to keep recycling his old flicks and making weird cautionary tales about the perils of going full walrus, then I say...TAKE MY MONEY. Don't care what anyone says, Clerks 2 still moves me to tears.

It is more the fault of the viewer than the man hisself. QT don't try to hide the fact that he cribs, and if you are gonna be 'influenced', there are worse directors to steal from. Hell, he wears his influences on his sleeve if you look at the lineup at The New Bev most nights.

I'm down for good dick jokes any day. I haven't seen Tusk yet, but even with something like Red State (which I thought was ok), I like seeing him step out of his comfort zone.

In other words, he's going to get my money no matter what, pretty much.

I wonder how many QT fans, or people who go to the New Beverly are even aware of what the French New Wave is?

I do agree that the fault lies largely with the viewer not being as educated about film as Tarantino is.

Without getting into a boring language of film explanation, someone who homages understands what made the original great in the first place, while someone who rips things off doesn't get it. That's why rip off artists always pander to people who don't get that they're ripping something off, while people who pay homage and are influenced by great films have no problems being very open about where their influences come from.

Everything Kevin Smith made up until Clerks 2 I thought was great, but then he made that cop movie. I actually don't mind when KS goes dark now because he's actually pretty good at it. Red State I thought was one of his best films. The problem people have with recent Kevin Smith is that he seems to have completely lost his ability to be funny. The convenient store scene in Tusk feels like someone is doing painfully bad job at ripping off Clerks. The humor in general in Tusk and Cop Out is teeth grinding bad.

I will give you that the Inspector Clouseau and convenience store scenes were awkward...but I think that's a case of him simply connecting with an idea and not really crafting it like he has done in the past. I think that Mallbrats and Clerks 3 are a little more important to him and he will spend some time to capture the groove other than the guerilla style of Tusk/Red State. And sorry, but I still watch Cop Out fondly. Even though it almost ended his career both in his own mind and in the eyes of Hollywood. If I am the only person who digs that film, so be it. It will be my albatross to bear.

I think if you're into movies enough to endure the seats at the New Beverly, you've probably at least heard the term and know the name Godard. :)

I enjoyed Cop Out, as well.
 
Dunno if it's coincidence or not but I haven't really enjoyed any of the movies he's made after he becaming a stoner. I thought Zach and Miri was pretty funny but Cop Out and Tusk are painful at times, Red State is passable only because Michael Parks' spellbinding performance.
